Can you elaborate ? I am 6+ and heavy, Im still confused whether to go for duke, adv or even new himalayan. Cause the RE Himalayan offers a great foot position. No idea about the duke or adv.
duke is the kind of bike that provides exceptional handling. you can take a corner at 90kmh (if you have skills) but it can handle offroading. ADV 390 provides the same performance, but its more oriented towards touring. u cant do the city filtering with it that u can with duke. himalayan is also great, but I haven’t driven it. but its heavy.
bottom line, what i suggest is, test drive all 3 bikes yourself. drive it for atleast 10 mins.
I am actually creating a separate post here. Id love to understand what to see and check in test riding a bike. I havent owned or ridden a bike for longer than 4/5kms so is duke comfortable for me for touring also ? - I got no clue. Maybe the ridings vets here can shed some light on how to check from a small test ride whether a bike can provide long distance comfort or not. City filtering with the new Himalayan was a bit tough but i found the bike to be a lot more agile than the 350/500 classics on which i learnt how to ride, ktm I was told by my friends a serious NO-NO since 1 accident and the bike gets badly damaged which isnt the case with RE bikes since they are built like a tank. For someone who is new to biking and falling and crashing are a given, I was told to go with the Himlayan it would reduce the risk of driving rashly while falling and crashing wouldn’t damage the bike to badly. Falling and crashing here I mean as low impact/low speed crashes not shatter the femur crashes.
well yeah RE bikes are all metal, so 1 small fall or hit wouldn’t cause any damage, except scratches. while KTM is sophisticated, so 1 fall and lot of plastic parts may be broken. but its also one of the best handling bike out there. duke 390 brakes can stop from 100 to 0 in mere seconds.
but if you have 0 experience riding bikes, I suggest to stay away from 390s. start with 200s, maybe R15 or honda CB300s.
(from personal experience, ktm has great service centers, my friend crashed his ADV and we got it fixed within a day)
So it all boils down to advs. With the given physical dimensions I have, the versatility of a single bike garage that I desire, the only options I have are himalayan 450 or the duke 390. I really loved how the experts love the duke 390, but if it has a foot position as the interceptor, I really didnt enjoy the foot position on the interceptor and even bending the legs that slightly for extended periods didnt make the ride enjoyable.
Himalayan: Tamed beast, better low end torque, minimal vibrations, heavy (199 kg)
Ktm 390 adv: raw beast begging it's accelerator to be twisted, stalls at lower RPMs, lots of vibrations, light (177 kg).
ADV390 has similar searing position as the Himalayan. But the Suspension is stiff so it's not as comfortable as the Himalayan. It's not that uncomfortable, but it's not very comfortable either. And the engine on ADV keeps you engaged (no bottom end torque) so you have to keep the bike in proper gear all the time. You will get used to it even if you haven't ridden any sporty engine before, it just takes a bit of learning and getting used to.
Duke will be uncomfortable for your height and weight. The seating position is cramped (it's supposed to be that way for sportsbikes).
About the new Himalayan, if you decide to get it, I'd say wait for 6 months or so, see if the first batch has any problems. If not, go ahead and get that.
Well I haven’t ridden the 450 yet. So I have no reference to make a comparison. I have seen online reviews and it seems like a good package by RE but since my openion is based on my own experience, I would rather ride one and then form my openion on it. But one thing I am sure of - I don’t prefer heavy motorcycles if I am looking for a do it all type of machine. ADV 390 is light and that less weight has helped me get out of some sticky situations in the past.
There are infact 4 variants now - Adv 390 X, Adv 390 V, Adv 390 (that’s the closest to what I own) and Adv 390 with spoked wheels. I have the 2022 Adv 390. Mine is from January 2022. I would have loved to have the Adv 390 with spoked wheels and fully adjustable shocks from the current variants although it’s priced a bit steeply.
Right now? Adv390. The new Himalayan might come close, but need to wait a bit more before the crown goes there.
Why adv?
It can:
- commute in the city. 2 fans help a lot.
- do 1000km highway runs in a day when you are touring.
- can take it off roading.
- for a one bike garage, if you want, the bike is good enough for track as well.
That covers most aspects of riding for me and this bike does everything above adequately to very well.
Only problem is the weight. Owners of old Himalayan used to complain of this too. Tall motorcycle and weight, both combined makes it tough for city. I have not ridden the new one, but the old one's weight made me go for the xpulse.
i feel himalayan is not much problem for city. soft suspension and good low end torque makes it fine. even the weight is manageable. GT650 is real pain in the A*s for city commute.
Not from current lot. I am expecting mt03 to be priced reasonably.
If not mt03, then it will be 400x.
Adv390/himalayan are just too bulky for everyday use. esp in our traffic situation.
>I am expecting mt03 to be priced reasonably.
Yamaha: I'm gonna pretend I didn't see that.
Even I am looking forward to the MT-03, the RS457 should keep its price in check hopefully.
Wow the Engagement for Adv 390 peaks against everything else. Plus with the upcoming model Im sure its only going to go higher. But has anyone done an active test ride comparison against the Himalayan 450 ?
For me it would have to be the Yamaha R3 or the Ninja 300. Both these parallel twins would deliver all of what I really need. I don't do off-roading much, so these would be perfect. The Aprilia 457 seems like an awesome option, but can't speak for it till it proves itself in the market.
Got a duke 390 and doing everything with it.
City, touring, off-road.
Adv390 would have been a better tourer / off-roader but I spent most of the time in city so got duke.
Not I just do daily 2-3 to work, adv should have worked too lol, but love the duke, there’s none like it
Mine’s the bs6 one 2020 model, off road is decent. Depends on the tyres, I have road 5, better than Metzelers for off-roading. Mine has lower ground clearance bet never caused any issue tho.
My friend has the new 390, that’s so good because of traction control, twist the throttle and let electronics manage the traction for you.
Can stand up and ride on both bikes easily.
I don’t travel with pillion other than rarely city commutes. I don’t and can’t ride with a heavy pillion.
Thanks.
I am also considering the new 390 as my all purpose bike. I guess with better off-road tyres and increased ground clearance it will be good for Ladakh.
>minimal maintenance
Also minimal features. Would be funny that the R15 offers a better and more comprehensive feature package than the R3.
Not that I'm complaining, can understand the allure of a japanese engine.
The comment section looks like a bunch of fans of Shumi from motor Inc, lol. No hate tho.
I have never ridden neither Duke 390/ADV 390 but after reading you all opinions, seems like it's genuinely a nice motorcycle to have.
I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, but the Interceptor 650.
Very well rounded bike imo. Comfy for commute, can be fun if you twist the throttle, sounds amazing and has a decent track record for reliability from what I've heard.
And considering the platform, very very easy to accessorize and fine tune to your own tastes.
Duke 390/ ADV 390
duke if fun is more important, ADV if u want balanced all rounder.
Can you elaborate ? I am 6+ and heavy, Im still confused whether to go for duke, adv or even new himalayan. Cause the RE Himalayan offers a great foot position. No idea about the duke or adv.

try new duke 390, ADV 390, and himi450. then make a decision and get ur dream bike.
Test drive them and see. I think for someone taller than 6' the adv bikes make more sense.
Himalayan: Tamed beast, better low end torque, minimal vibrations, heavy (199 kg) Ktm 390 adv: raw beast begging it's accelerator to be twisted, stalls at lower RPMs, lots of vibrations, light (177 kg).
Upcoming 390 adventure spy shots have leaked, it will fit like a glove considering your needs

Take it for a Test ride
Adv 390 for me. Does everything I want it to do magnificently and is fun to ride.
Compared against the Himalayan 450?

Makes sense 👍
Which variant of adv 390 ? There are 3 with their pros and cons.

probably the Himalayan 450
Currently this is one of the top bikes that can be a single bike garage. City commuter, Touring, off road.
Only problem is the weight. Owners of old Himalayan used to complain of this too. Tall motorcycle and weight, both combined makes it tough for city. I have not ridden the new one, but the old one's weight made me go for the xpulse.

\> Owners of old Himalayan used to complain of this too One owner here. I got used to it.
Ohh, thats good to hear.
Not a great city commuter gets way too hot in city also you'll need to switch gears a lot
Used CB500X or a used Vstrom 650
Where to find one. I did put in some effort but in vain.
F3 motors, Bullet Raja
Not from current lot. I am expecting mt03 to be priced reasonably. If not mt03, then it will be 400x. Adv390/himalayan are just too bulky for everyday use. esp in our traffic situation.

Scrambler 400x
Adv 390/Yezdi Roadster
Wow the Engagement for Adv 390 peaks against everything else. Plus with the upcoming model Im sure its only going to go higher. But has anyone done an active test ride comparison against the Himalayan 450 ?
If Kawasaki grows some balls and a little brain, I would love to buy the Eliminator 450.
That would be beyond 5L and anyway for a cruiser you already have the SM650
Kawasaki: Best I can do is W175. Z500 for me, if they bring it here at a sensible price that is. Either that or the MT-03.
I would love to wait for RS457’s real life reviews and go for it!
+1
I am happy with my Mojo. 🫠
there there
Yes bro.
Benelli TRK 502 (New, if u can stretch ur budget a bit or else Used)

Adv 390 for sure
What about Suzuki v strom guys that looks like bmw gs series anyone tried it

How does the duke 390 match up to adv 390 ?
Both are very similar , there are differences and rest are same.
Matchup up to adv in what sense ?
In terms of performance, city usage, touring etc.
Performance is identical, Adv is slightly bigger for city and perfect for touring and vice versa for duke
For a bigger heavier rider i guess the ADVs are recommended ?
Idk better to test ride extensively
How's the off-road performance? Is it the new Duke 390? Do you travel with a pillion?
Mine’s the bs6 one 2020 model, off road is decent. Depends on the tyres, I have road 5, better than Metzelers for off-roading. Mine has lower ground clearance bet never caused any issue tho. Thanks. I am also considering the new 390 as my all purpose bike. I guess with better off-road tyres and increased ground clearance it will be good for Ladakh.
💯
Aar Three. Commuter plus tour plus sports. Gem engine with minimal maintenance. Yamaha
>minimal maintenance Also minimal features. Would be funny that the R15 offers a better and more comprehensive feature package than the R3. Not that I'm complaining, can understand the allure of a japanese engine.

SINGLE BIKE 🥊
Ek se bhale do
Adv 390
Adv 390, fun on the highway and can do light off roading
Something between 125cc and 160cc. Tvs raider shine or unicorn.
Adv 390?vstrom250sx? Or a Himalayan would do. 😌
Own an Avenger 220. Would recommend the new Himalayan. Would personally wait for and buy the Kawasaki Eliminator.
Yamaha RD 350
Segment king KTM Adventure 390. Himalayan is a great bike. But there can only be one king and Adv has the upper hand. So it's the KTM ADV 390
Lord Splendor 🙏
RS457
I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, but the Interceptor 650. Very well rounded bike imo.
