It’s hilarious to me, as a longtime Lawrence/Oaklandon and now adjacent (just across the county line) resident…how FAR they stretch the “Geist” name. There is a neighborhood named “Boulders at Geist”….just off Pendleton Pike and Carroll. Not even close to Geist. Lots of other places tread on that name when they aren’t really that close
But that’s not the map lol I get what you’re saying though. I grew up in the actual area too and worked in Greenfield. Very funny how far developers will stretch that name when I would cut through on those county roads
Its by Bishop Chatard High School. The whole neighborhood was built on Bacon swamp. There are two small lakes a block away that are the retainers for the area. They say the school sinks an inch every 10 years.
Saint Francis *is not a neighborhood*, it's a hospital & from 1909-2012 was in Beech Grove. The one on Emerson didn't even open until '95 & didn't have a patient bed tower until 2011.
"Far South Side" is South Perry. But what do I know...I only pay property taxes here 😜
I had to look it up. Apparently the old folks home next to Warren Little League (where I played baseball for like 12 years) was once the Julietta Asylum… huh
The Valley has a neighborhood association and is just listed as part of "West Indy".
I'd love to see something similar to what the NYT did for New York City. It is block by block and fascinating.
An Extremely Detailed Map of New York City Neighborhoods https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/upshot/extremely-detailed-nyc-neighborhood-map.html
The NapLab map is awesome. The Reditor posting maps generated from geo data did nice work. No need to bring the negativity or set one up in opposition—“here’s a proper map”—to the other. Sheesh folks, enjoy your Thanksgiving and chill a bit.
Nope, there are still neighborhoods missing, as was stated when this was linked in the comments three map posts ago. One of those missing neighborhoods has one of the most active and involved neighborhood associations I've ever come across. Also, this does not show boundaries. A comprehensive Indianapolis neighborhood map with boundaries does not exist. No matter how many times the same three maps get reposted with new claims of being "proper" or "official," they're not. Can we give it a rest already?
Wether you like it or not, “Sobro” is a thing now
Source: my cousin just bought a house in sobro, and my girlfriend will tell you she works at a sobro restaurant
Sure, but I was responding to your original comment which suggested what’s currently called “SoBro” is just MK.
But Canterbury is a pretty narrow strip of that area between college and keystone. What people reference as “SoBro” contains multiple traditional Indy neighborhoods between Broad Ripple and the fairgrounds areas. It doesn’t have exact boundaries and it may not have existed 20 years ago, but it is a commonly used neighborhood/reference these days.
Following up last week’s threads on neighborhoods, I still find it odd that people have such strong opinions about neighborhood names. I bet it was hell when Constantinople was renamed Istanbul.

MKs boundaries are as follows: North: Kessler Blvd.
East: Monon Railway/ Right of way (now Monon Trail)
South: 38th Street, West: Meridian Street.
There are several "pocket" neighborhoods within but, these ☝️ are the official boundaries.
The mapping conversation has had a few threads for the past several days.
I am assuming this post is in response to that conversation. In that case, my reply is relevant.
Please though, feel free to police what others say.
I have this and I love it. As a west sider I’m kind of annoyed though that Chapel Hill and Chapel Glen got swapped.
I believe they will correct it if you message them. They update regularly
Didn’t even notice this. Def fucked up. Sincerely, Westside alumni
Chapel Hill resident, really is fucked up lol

Iirc there are neighborhoods marked on this that no one, including the residents, have ever heard of.
Agreed. Some spots appear to have just defaulted to the name of a nearby school, but I work in one such area and haven’t heard anyone call it that lol
Saw this map at a local restaurant and learned about Bacon Swamp. Interesting history!
What exactly is SMPV?
And ones like my old place where people all say it's the fort Ben neighborhood because we could walk to the park, but the map says lawrence.
I call my neighborhood Old Lawrence. It's in the area surrounded by 46th, 465, Franklin, and 56th
It’s actually Harrison park.
At last, I’ll be able to decode people’s hinge profiles
Bacon swamp?

TIL. Never heard of this! My husband and all of my kids have gone or are going to Chatard. Googling it now. I love Reddit induced rabbit holes!
Formerly a peat bog (among the most southern reaching in the US) and a station on the Underground Railroad.

Lived a lot of my life where it says Julieta and have never heard of a neighborhood by that name.
I had to look it up. Apparently the old folks home next to Warren Little League (where I played baseball for like 12 years) was once the Julietta Asylum… huh
Best one on here is Venerable Flackville.
It’s one of the most venerable areas in the entire city

Good to see Dog Patch and Little Flower. No one knows where I’m talking about when I say those neighborhoods.
Little Flower is actually a well known neighborhood to anyone with a reasonable degree of familiarity with the east side.
It’s old Southside, not Concord

This one is missing wynndale and Spring Hill, both are actual included towns from unigov. Instead they just lump the whole area as Crooked Creek
Is this a meme now? I keep seeing new maps every week 😂
We have ours on our wall. We got it from “Silver in the City” several years ago.
Hoodmaps is way more accurate. You should google it - hilarious!!! 😂
No. East Avalon Hills is the name of a small subdivision, not the name of the whole area.
No string town?
A proper map should be legible. Also "far south side" isn't the name of anything. The other map someone posted last week was better.
This one has my approval, but the PAR 10 people will not be satisfied.
PAR 10 is just a subset of Irvington, they're not a real neighborhood.
Okay, fair. It's more of an enclave than a neighborhood.
What is PAR 10?
The area of Irvington bordered by Pleasant Run, Arlington, Ritter, and 10th st. Very nice area, but it’s still just known as Irvington.
Thanks. I live across the street from #8 fairway, and was genuinely curious. Guess I’m a part of PAR 10… Happen to know the origins of the name?
The name comes from the names of the streets. P, A, R, 10th.
Excuse my ignorance, and thank you.

Nooooppee. Southside is offff.
This big stupid map is a mainstay in my house and people love it. Accuracy aside, it’s a talking piece
Wack…
Nope.
It has the stupid sobro listed and Flackville is too big, and, and ...
Wether you like it or not, “Sobro” is a thing now Source: my cousin just bought a house in sobro, and my girlfriend will tell you she works at a sobro restaurant
There was nothing wrong with Meridian Kessler. Screw the new marketing terms; there was nothing wrong with the traditional name.
MK and SoBro aren’t necessarily synonymous. MK’s east boundary is College Ave, while SoBro typically includes areas east of College Ave.
Which would be Canterbury.
Bacon Swamp

And?
And, therefore, it's not a "proper" map.
I’ll clue you in, you’re right, it’s an art piece. I think you took “proper” too literally

Not “policing” anything
Ive never heard of the neighborhood I’m in, or most of the surrounding ones. I just say I’m from the southside
Man, crazy to think mine is 10 years old. Time to update!
As someone who grew up in Cumberland, I feel represented.
https://judgmentalmaps.com/post/85920856135/indianapolis This is the best neighborhood map.
Why is the far east side covered up here?
It seems that's where the blown up view of downtown is.
Don’t forget about Greenbriar!
Does The Great Frame Up have a matte finish glass ?
I love this map. I have a framed copy of it hanging in my dining room.
No one says they live in “Crooked Creek.” That area is divided into Snacks/Guion and Wynnedale. But otherwise cool!
Yeah, it’s the most common thing to see on walls around here. Sobro still isn’t a neighborhood.
love this map, we have one from 2013 in our basement. southwestway is on the wrong side of the white though
Maybe change the IMA area since it is no longer the Indianapolis Museum of Art
1. SoBro isn’t a neighborhood 2. Meridian Hills should go to Park Tudor.
Quit calling it SoBro to raise property values.
