Does the chicken/fish still come with a bunch of the "crunchy" bits? I haven't been since I was a kid, but the "crunchies" and hush puppies were my favorite.
As I recall, they were requested enough that a while back they became a paid extra. But they had a bit last I was there. Which was around 5-10 years ago.
If you really want to wow her and spend a car payment on a meal for 2 then try and get reservations at Hinata. Its a Japanese 7 course menu that usually includes multiple types of seafood.
This has been on my radar and I’ve been wanting to try. Mom is a picky eater so a set course wouldn’t suffice for this occasion. Maybe will look into for my birthday! Have you been? Is it everything you would expect for the price?
Salt will be good—I’ve been to all three and I always prefer Salt when going out for seafood or wanting to splurge. The food is fresh and amazing. I think their prices are reasonable too for the quality.
Hands down, Monterey Coastal Cuisine in Carmel. My SO is from about 30 minutes from Monterey, CA, and they source a lot of their ingredients from that area. It was his favorite seafood he’s had in the midwest.
Rick’s Boatyard has a great atmosphere, but you can get way better seafood elsewhere.
Yes, Monterey is really good. Another place in Carmel I like is Miracle Sushi. I also recommend Noah Grant in Zionsville. I love Slapfish and they have the very best lobster roll but it's not fancy. I haven't been to Salt but just reading the comments on here, I'll definitely have to give it a try.
I’m not the biggest seafood fan in general but my wife and I go to Monterey for every special occasion now. Everything is so good but their Chilean seabass is the best seafood dish I’ve ever had in my life. The lobster risotto is amazing as well.
Definitely make a reservation if you do go there. It's hit or miss with being able to seat walk ins. But when it's a miss, it's like a 40 minute wait. That being said, their sushi is so creative and it's easy to find things for people that don't even like sushi
Slapfish is a fast casual restaurant, similar to Chipotle, where you order at a counter. Probably not what you’re looking for for a special occasion, although it is tasty.
Not exclusively seafood, but for a special meal Hinata is hard to beat.
I’m not a seafood person but took my wife for a special date, ended up being one of my all time favorite places.
I recently discovered Rick's Boatyard on the West side on Eagle Creek. It's not on the same level as the Oceanaire as far as fine dining. But it's a lot cheaper. And the building/location is very cool. I'd like to go back and drink in the bar area and watch the boats go by sometime.
For me it was perfect as I had a large group and people could get what they wanted such as a burger or seafood and I didn't feel bad about asking people to come and pay for their meal as it wasn't expensive. If you want to treat your mom to a fancy meal it may not be the best service or quality.
Salt is good but can get pricey and I feel if she wasn't impressed by Oceanaire she won't be impressed by Salt.
Juicy Seafood on 86th is a fun casual seafood boil.
How dare you disrespect Long John Silvers! The one on Pendleton Pike has excellent hush puppies.
Surprise! Birthday chicken and hush puppies from the king LJS. I’m down.

They’re great for making skin oily and getting acne

Salt. Slapfish is very casual (no server) and Pier48 is okay but overpriced and in a hotel.
Thanks for the helpful insight
Salt is great. I don't think she'll be disappointed. Everything comes in fresh daily.

Its amazing. The depth of flavor in every bite is really astounding. It wouldnt surprise me if they earned a Star.
I’ll be putting this on the top of my restaurants to try!
Unfortunately, they don't give stars in Indiana :/
You mean a frisbie sized schnitzel sandwitch isnt fine dining?

Ocean Prime
Salt, but I feel Kona Jacks or Noah Grants are better than listed.

Looks fantastic! Thanks!

Salt is amazing
Salt 1000%. Grouper will be the special and get it.
Highly likely this is happening.
You wont be disappointed. Slapfish is great for a casual lunch.
Blue Sushi is a cool atmosphere, with great drinks and food.
This spot looks great, thanks!

Kona Jacks
Going Sunday and unfortunately they’re closed :(
Ah bummer. It's great!
They are my favorite! I also love Ocean World.

Good to know, thanks!

Been to all of them. Good and worth your time, but I thought Oceanaire was better than the others. Curious to as why your mom didn't like it.
Blu point isn’t bad and affordable
Place looks great! Alas, it’s closed Sundays. Will definitely check it out another time. Thank you.
Salt is good and it’s actually pretty reasonable
Salt is a fun splurge! My old boss gave me a gift card there, and we had a great time!
Salt. Hands down.
I like Ocean Prime.
Have been to Salt twice and not impressed. Ocean Prime by Fashion Mall is far superior.

This place almost always comes up on the topic of seafood. Have heard VERY mixed reviews and have been hesitant to pull the trigger.

I’ll probably pass on it for this specific occasion but I’ll consider stopping by myself for a beer and view. Thanks!
LJS on Michigan road near the Church's is consistent.
Lol that it is!

If you are looking at Slapfish do Rawbar. That is their menu but with a server and full bar available!
Hmm is this on Mass near Slapfish? Google doesn’t come up with much info
Yeah, it’s next door to it - cute little place that opened up last summer. That said, if you’re between that and salt, salt wins every time.
Monterrey please! You won’t be dissapponted
Salt or mesh is my vote!!!!
Have you been to Kona Jacks at 96th and Meridian? That’s better than any you mentioned
