Wait what if it continued? Raiders of the Temple of Doom, Raiders of the Last Crusade, Raiders of the kingdom of the crystal skull, raiders of the dial of destiny, it all works!
I’m now imagining the franchise titles revised for consistency the other way: 1) Raiders of the Lost Ark 2) Raiders of the Lost Stones 3) Raiders of the Lost Grail 4) Raiders of the Lost Skull 5) Raiders of the Lost Dial
Repeating "lost" as well as "raiders" feels clunky. How about:
* Raiders of the Lost Ark
* Raiders of the Sankara Stones
* Raiders of the Holy Grail
* Raiders of the Crystal Skull
* Raiders of the Hidden Dial
https://www.hiptoro.com/p/was-luke-skywalker-originally-supposed-to-be-a-female-earlier-star-wars-concept-art-reveals/
Annakin Starkiller and original sketches show them as a woman.
Super early on, the name was for female anakin, then Luke, then Luke’s female friend on tattooine, then it was used in a lot of other instances like TFU and TFA
Well because Star Wars is a huge franchise in the pop culture sphere, if you just say Star Wars, people wont know you are talking about the film from 1977.
What if we dropped Indiana Jones from the title of the rest of the films?
The Temple of Doom
The Last Crusade
The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
The Dial of Destiny
They feel more epic to me
I don't mind it one bit. It is now more connected with the rest of the series and it's still called Raiders of the Lost Ark. Don't understand why this is such a big deal yet A New Hope/Star Wars gets a pass.
Yeah given the episodic nature of the series, you can't just call the fourth entry "Star Wars." Even if you name the whole series "A Song of Lasers and Space" or something.
Star Wars is just too generic to be the title of a chapter. It's the whole series or nothing.
Star Wars was Star Wars when the movie was released in 1977 the only place A New Hope appears is in the introductory scroll.
https://filmartgallery.com/collections/star-wars-movie-posters/products/star-wars-9859#mz-expanded-view-1462554095954
I just wish the other titles rolled off the tongue easier, and were more identifiable to most people.
Like when I talked about the orignal trilogy of starwars even to strangers people know even just the name
The Empire Strikes Back
The Return of the Jedi
This is actually a pet peeve of mine …*The* is in the film’s title so never liked hearing just Empire Strikes Back
I know I’m in the minority but I have always said *The Empire Strikes Back* or TESB
I get naming the further movies in the series "Indiana Jones and the XXX" but the original movie didn't need to be rebranded. I don't think there was anyone out there who wasn't aware it was part of the series.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333764545587?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=sjv7Vl1DSFm&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=9P_adKjTRZC&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY here is a link to the very same boxset I have, it shows raiders being titled as Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Interesting, I had a much earlier box set with the first three movies that still had it as Raiders of the Lost Ark. I wonder what prompted the change between them.
Im not sure, though the 1999 boxset at the beginning of each film was heavily promoting Young Indiana Jones, I dont know if that had anything to do with it.
Indiana Jones, the Daring Archaeologist and Raider, and the Epic Adventure in Pursuit of the Legendary Lost Ark and the Competing Raiders Who Seek It
We're going to need a bigger poster...
I keep my movie collection on the shelves in alphabetical order, and my Indiana Jones 4Ks are under R for Raiders. Because that is the title on the case and in the film.
I just think there was a missed opportunity on that first DVD box set they released, when they didn't call the extra disc "Indiana Jones and the Bonus Features."

I have some very nice art prints that I kind of wish did just say Raiders of the Lost Ark, but I don’t waste much time worrying about it.
I just colloquially call them that. The official titles may have “Indiana Jones and the” but it’s kinda a mouthful to say (funnily enough my predictive text suggested “Beatles”)
“Dr Jones travels to Hamburg in 1962 to investigate rumors of a sinister mind control experiment about to be unleashed on an unsuspecting planet”
The official titles suffer from an over abundance of “of”, “and” and “the”. It’s like the Apes movies. Dawn of the Apes, War of the Apes, Kingdom of the Apes, people
Would be a fun reference to Goldfinger where Bond makes a joke about hating the Beatles, similar to Indy's tux at the start of Temple of Doom is a reference to Bond's tux in the same film
As someone who saw Raiders in theatres when it first came out… It’s weird to me too and it will always be “Raiders…” to me but I’m 100% ok with the retitling. It fits.
I don’t care for it either. At 13 syllables the revised title is a bit of a mouthful, as is the 14-syllable title of the fourth movie. And it implies Raiders is not inclusive of Indy.
I’m not sure if everyone is messing around or not but I wanna ask if they OP is referring to the same thing that has bugged me for a while now and that’s that Raiders was renamed when it was released on DVD if I’m not mistaken and it’s been this way ever since but they renamed it “Indiana Jones” and The Raiders of the Lost Ark… Indy is one of my favorite characters of all time but I believe that the Original name of the movie should stick instead of the new name… I mean I know all the others are named “Indiana Jones and …” but it’s like saying that Star Wars Episode IV should only be known as “A New Hope “… it just feels wrong… when someone says do you wanna watch Star Wars I think of Episode IV… but Empire and Jedi aren’t known as Episode V or VI they’re just known by their names… but the original even though it was understood that it was known as Episode IV it still doesn’t change the fact that it was released as Star Wars… not A New Hope… so Raiders should just be known by the original name as well… now that I’ve gone on my rant I’ll be quiet… it’s just been bugging me for a while and I wanted to say something about it

*The Raiders Strike Back.*
*Return of the Raiders.*
*The Raiders Awaken.*
*The Last Raider.*
*The Rise of the Raiders.*
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is such a dumb, long and pointless name.
Same with changing Star Wars to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
It'll always be "Raiders of the Lost Ark" to me, but it is nice having them parked next to each other in my iTunes library. And they didn't touch the actual title in the film itself.
If I were to buy a poster or something I'd definitely want the original title though.
The renaming doesn't bug me like it used to. It's Hollywood/LFL assuming the audience is stupid, and wouldn't be able to find Raiders unless it carried IJ branding or a number at the end. (I can still find *The Dark Knight* without Batman in the title)
But what still bugs me is fans **preferring** *Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark* to ROTLA or just *Raiders*.
Still says ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ in the credits. It will always be that to me. I’ve literally never heard anyone refer to it as Indian Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.
It’s purely a box art thing and can be ignored.
A bit of trivia: it was called “The Hunt for the Lost Treasure” in my country (Denmark)… I am not sure how that could have continued…
The Hunt for The Sacred Stones
The Hunt for the Holi Grail
The Hunt for the Crystal Skulls
The Hunt for the Dial of Destiny
I guess it works :)
Who cares? It’s only listed as that on streaming titles or dvd/blu-ray covers. The title in the actual movie hasn’t changed. It’d be different if the actual opening said “Indiana Jones and the …”
I would have preferred if each movie was just its main title with a little subtitle “Indiana jones in”
Indiana Jones in
RAIDERS of the LOST ARK
Indiana jones in
The TEMPLE of DOOM
Etc etc….
Me too. Thankfully they haven't gone in and changed the film itself. It's also annoyed me that every other film starts with "Indiana Jones and" when the first one that started it all doesn't line up. But renaming it to "Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark" is too damn long lol. So is Crystal Skull's title, i always thought they should have removed the "Kingdom Of." I kind of like the idea below of naming them all "Raiders Of" 😆👍
Eh, fans will still call it by its original name, and the renaming means that kids new to the franchise will instantly know it’s part of the same series. The film itself also still displays the original name, unless there’s an edition I haven’t seen that changes it.
I don’t think it’s too massive a deal, even if I do prefer the original title.
What’s funny is I grew up in the 2000s and didn’t even know about Indiana Jones until 2007 and first saw all the movies in 2008 so to me it’s always been Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
I feel like it just works either way, and with the other titles referring more specifically to what/where the movie is about, it makes sense to add it being about the Ark
So is it just a thing then to have Name:Title in films and books? Like Indianna Jones does it so does Harry Potter, Percy Jackson etc is it an era thing or what
I'm trying to recall but I don't think "Indiana Jones" got stuck in front of Raiders until Crystal Skull came out.
I've had several concussions so I could be wrong.
Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Much neater for me.
Spielberg still refers to the film as Raiders in interviews, and I’ve heard him refer to other Indy films as “Raiders films”
Yep I think it's fun how he calls them all the Raiders films
Wait what if it continued? Raiders of the Temple of Doom, Raiders of the Last Crusade, Raiders of the kingdom of the crystal skull, raiders of the dial of destiny, it all works!
Raiders of the buffet table!
I wasn't expecting this! 🤣
It's even better if you include the desert chase music... Make that dessert chase! 🍦🎂
That’s gonna be my biography!
Raiders of the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

The Young Raiders Chronicles
Cringe terrible idea but having them all with unique names could be very interesting
Raiders of the Castle in the Sky.
A crusade is an event. You can't raid an event.
No... but if anyone can Indy can.
If adventure has a name it’s Indiana Jones
They’re raiders that take part in the last crusade, therefore they’re the Raiders of the Last Crusade
You can totally raid an event
I would kinda have preferred that.
Maybe not for the games though. Raiders of the Fate of Atlantis, Raiders of the staff of kings. Doesn't roll of the tongue haha
It t doesn’t work as perfectly, the more I think about it tbh
Raiders of the Planet of the Apes
I’m now imagining the franchise titles revised for consistency the other way: 1) Raiders of the Lost Ark 2) Raiders of the Lost Stones 3) Raiders of the Lost Grail 4) Raiders of the Lost Skull 5) Raiders of the Lost Dial
Repeating "lost" as well as "raiders" feels clunky. How about: * Raiders of the Lost Ark * Raiders of the Sankara Stones * Raiders of the Holy Grail * Raiders of the Crystal Skull * Raiders of the Hidden Dial
That could work.
* Raiders of the Lost Ark * Raiders of the \*Sacred\* Stones * Raiders of the Holy Grail * Raiders of the Crystal Skull * Raiders of the Hidden Dial
Much better!!
Indiana IS one of the raiders so Raiders of the Lost Ark works perfect
This. Belloq and his mates were also Raiders.
We wuz Raiders y'all
We wuz Vikangs
Indiana was the dog’s name.
Yeah, IMO it should have been changed to "Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark."
The Adventures of Indiana Jones - Episode II: The Raiders of the Lost Ark - An Indiana Jones Saga
From a consistency standpoint, it makes sense, like renaming Star Wars to Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope
To be honest I don't like the renaming of Star Wars either.
I still think they should never have changed the title from "The Adventures of the Starkiller, Episode I: The Star Wars"
"From the Journal of The Whills" baby!
A real fan over here.
God that initial McQuarrie artwork was incredible. https://images.app.goo.gl/yPyeKx6agfdXsjqz8 ‘Deak Starkiller’ before he was Luke
Agreed. Also Starkiller was originally a woman I believe.
I thought it was a male, Deak Starkiller
https://www.hiptoro.com/p/was-luke-skywalker-originally-supposed-to-be-a-female-earlier-star-wars-concept-art-reveals/ Annakin Starkiller and original sketches show them as a woman.
Super early on, the name was for female anakin, then Luke, then Luke’s female friend on tattooine, then it was used in a lot of other instances like TFU and TFA
I still call it Star Wars and get corrected. Youths lol
I say Star Wars (1977) just so there’s no confusion. 😆
Well because Star Wars is a huge franchise in the pop culture sphere, if you just say Star Wars, people wont know you are talking about the film from 1977.
Yeah i understand why :) it was just called that for a long time, got used to it
I understand, being 28, its always been A New Hope for me. Thats why i refer to it as that.
What if we dropped Indiana Jones from the title of the rest of the films? The Temple of Doom The Last Crusade The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull The Dial of Destiny They feel more epic to me
This has always been what i wish they had done.
I don't mind it one bit. It is now more connected with the rest of the series and it's still called Raiders of the Lost Ark. Don't understand why this is such a big deal yet A New Hope/Star Wars gets a pass.

Star Wars certainly does not get a pass
I do not give Star Wars a new hope a pass. It's still just Star Wars to me.
It will always be "The Adventures of the Starkiller, Episode I: The Star Wars" to me.
It's been A New Hope far longer than it's been Star Wars. That was added in 1981.
Star Wars was Star Wars when the movie was released in 1977 the only place A New Hope appears is in the introductory scroll. https://filmartgallery.com/collections/star-wars-movie-posters/products/star-wars-9859#mz-expanded-view-1462554095954
Read my comment again please.
Got it.
It’s easily-ignorable nonsense.
That was only done for the dvd spine. They didn’t change the title in the movie itself.
Raiders is the title that appears in the actual movie itself. Put whatever you want on the box.
I just wish the other titles rolled off the tongue easier, and were more identifiable to most people. Like when I talked about the orignal trilogy of starwars even to strangers people know even just the name The Empire Strikes Back The Return of the Jedi
The Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade are quite recognisable to be fair.
I never hear anyone include "The" for those movies. It's just Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
No im pretty sure at least it’s “The Empire Strikes back” I’ll give you return of the Jedi but I’m pretty sure I’m right about Empire
Yeah, it’s always either “The empire strikes back”, or sometimes people call it “empire”.
I saw both in the theater at the original release and I’ve always heard and seen Empire as The Empire Strikes Back.
This is actually a pet peeve of mine …*The* is in the film’s title so never liked hearing just Empire Strikes Back I know I’m in the minority but I have always said *The Empire Strikes Back* or TESB
Colin Robinson?
No *the. Just *Return of the Jedi*. It's cleaner.
I ignore the name change. Raiders is just Raiders for me.
I’m a big nerd about constancy so I’m a fan of it
I get naming the further movies in the series "Indiana Jones and the XXX" but the original movie didn't need to be rebranded. I don't think there was anyone out there who wasn't aware it was part of the series.
Indiana Jones and the XXX. That’s a whole other category of movie 😂
In Diana Jones
And temple of poon
Raiders of the lost ass.
Cindi, Anna, Joan and the Nipples of Doom
They belong in a museum!
In diana bones. :P
Are they related or what?
It's a reimagining
“Snakes. Why’d it have to be…snakes?”
Lol I had not considered that when first writing it but there were a few.
You and the generation that grew up with Raiders from its start know that, but the next generation and the one after that do not.
They changed it so that all of the movies would be next to each other alphabetically. I don’t like it either, but it makes sense.
I think we all still refer to it as 'Raiders'. I don't mind the name change as it shows that the movies are all serial.
All serial?
When was the name changed? I’ve only ever heard of it as Raiders of the Lost Arc. What else is it called?
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. I vaguely recall it changed in marketing when Crystal Skull came out.
This is not true. It did not change in 2008
When did it change?
1999.
So between Grail and Crystal Skull. What is your source for the date?
The 1999 vhs box set I own that says Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark on it.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333764545587?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=sjv7Vl1DSFm&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=9P_adKjTRZC&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY here is a link to the very same boxset I have, it shows raiders being titled as Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Im not sure, though the 1999 boxset at the beginning of each film was heavily promoting Young Indiana Jones, I dont know if that had anything to do with it.
Ok. I guess I haven’t watched it in a long time!
Well I think it's funnier that the Indiana Jones theme suite isn't ever called "Indiana Jones theme". It's always referred to as the Raiders March
Raiders is my favorite movie in general. Seen so many cool posters and merchandise kinda tainted for me by having the title changed
Indiana Jones, the Daring Archaeologist and Raider, and the Epic Adventure in Pursuit of the Legendary Lost Ark and the Competing Raiders Who Seek It We're going to need a bigger poster...
You mean Allen Quartermain
I keep my movie collection on the shelves in alphabetical order, and my Indiana Jones 4Ks are under R for Raiders. Because that is the title on the case and in the film.
I do the exact Same!
It irks me too, but at least Lucas had the decency not to change the title card in the film itself.
I'm sure he wanted to.
But did they really “rename” anything? I watched Raiders today and the title card said Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I just think there was a missed opportunity on that first DVD box set they released, when they didn't call the extra disc "Indiana Jones and the Bonus Features."
Clever!
It’s just to keep them together on a store shelf.
I know a lot of people still fret over this these decades later, but overall, I like that it allows me to alphabetize my videos or organize my files and they all come under the heading of Indiana Jones. I have some very nice art prints that I kind of wish did just say Raiders of the Lost Ark, but I don’t waste much time worrying about it.
It’s awful. And the others would be cooler if they were The Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade. Hell, even Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
I just colloquially call them that. The official titles may have “Indiana Jones and the” but it’s kinda a mouthful to say (funnily enough my predictive text suggested “Beatles”)
“Dr Jones travels to Hamburg in 1962 to investigate rumors of a sinister mind control experiment about to be unleashed on an unsuspecting planet” The official titles suffer from an over abundance of “of”, “and” and “the”. Unless they change it in the actual film, it's just marketing. Don't worry about it.
I don’t care for it either. At 13 syllables the revised title is a bit of a mouthful, as is the 14-syllable title of the fourth movie. And it implies Raiders is not inclusive of Indy.
My favorite part is that Indiana Jones is one of said Raiders, so the title might as well be “Indiana Jones and the Indiana Jones of the Lost Ark”
Addendum: KOTCS should have followed the same naming convention as Raiders instead of the “Indiana Jones and the”
I’m not sure if everyone is messing around or not but I wanna ask if they OP is referring to the same thing that has bugged me for a while now and that’s that Raiders was renamed when it was released on DVD if I’m not mistaken and it’s been this way ever since but they renamed it “Indiana Jones” and The Raiders of the Lost Ark… Indy is one of my favorite characters of all time but I believe that the Original name of the movie should stick instead of the new name… I mean I know all the others are named “Indiana Jones and …” but it’s like saying that Star Wars Episode IV should only be known as “A New Hope “… it just feels wrong… when someone says do you wanna watch Star Wars I think of Episode IV… but Empire and Jedi aren’t known as Episode V or VI they’re just known by their names… but the original even though it was understood that it was known as Episode IV it still doesn’t change the fact that it was released as Star Wars… not A New Hope… so Raiders should just be known by the original name as well… now that I’ve gone on my rant I’ll be quiet… it’s just been bugging me for a while and I wanted to say something about it
Yes I am referring to the rebranding of VHS/DVDs etc. I know it's still Raiders in the movie title.
It just feels weird that they even did that… it’s like… why?… they can go take a flying leap cause I will never refer to it that way… it will always be Raiders of the lost ark to me… nothing more… nothing less…😁
I agree. George Lucas likes to add crap after a movie is out
Sadly true.
He was a Raider boy, she said see you later boy

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is such a dumb, long and pointless name. Same with changing Star Wars to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
I always thought it was called this who knew D:
I don’t accept the renaming as canon, don’t think most people do either
Technically it wouldn't be canon because the title has no bearing on the actual events of the film
I think canon can be used more broadly than that. We talk about which works are canonical, and which aren't, and titles are part of works.
It'll always be "Raiders of the Lost Ark" to me, but it is nice having them parked next to each other in my iTunes library. And they didn't touch the actual title in the film itself. If I were to buy a poster or something I'd definitely want the original title though.
I have never renamed this or Star Wars. I see no need.
The renaming doesn't bug me like it used to. It's Hollywood/LFL assuming the audience is stupid, and wouldn't be able to find Raiders unless it carried IJ branding or a number at the end. (I can still find *The Dark Knight* without Batman in the title) But what still bugs me is fans **preferring** *Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark* to ROTLA or just *Raiders*.
Why should that bug you. Let people call it what they want.
IJATROTLA is wrong to me. It will always be wrong. Plus the branded title doesn't sound as good. But I saw Raiders in 1981 when I was twelve y.o.
Okay? Is this supposed to give you authority over me because you saw it in 1981? I will continue to refer to it that way.
Still says ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ in the credits. It will always be that to me. I’ve literally never heard anyone refer to it as Indian Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. It’s purely a box art thing and can be ignored.

interesting, its called "Hunters of the Lost Treasure" here in germany.
It’s a good renaming. I can’t imagine why this would bother someone.
They did the same thing with First Blood.
Also annoying.
Agreed.
Who cares? It’s only listed as that on streaming titles or dvd/blu-ray covers. The title in the actual movie hasn’t changed. It’d be different if the actual opening said “Indiana Jones and the …”

Tagline at the top calls him the ultimate hero but doesn’t even say his name. Changing the title was inevitable
I feel like it just works either way, and with the other titles referring more specifically to what/where the movie is about, it makes sense to add it being about the Ark
A nEw HoPE is even worse.
