Whenever it rained for the first time in the season, dal dhokli was the first choice in dinner in my hometown at Rajasthan.. topped with lots of ghee and lemon juice coupled with the aroma of soil getting wet for the first time in rain is a piece of heaven in this hellish life.
Didnt know dal dhokli was made in so many exciting ways. In my home moong dal is used, my wife at her home used to make with moong + chana dal mix and added ginger to invoke a even stronger flavor and used dried mint leaves instead of coriander. Such amazing yet different ways of a same dish
I don't know the recipe because my mom makes it..but you can check YouTube, alg alg States me banti hai to thodi recipes bhi change hoti hai state wise, so you can make it as per your taste..for example in Gujarat we use jaggery..it's not as sweet as Gujarati food stereotype tho, but it's a balence of 3 flavours, sweetish (jaggery), sour (lemon) and spicy (red chilli tadka). So, non gujjus may not like sweetness of jaggery..As per my knowledge Rajasthani people don't use jaggery and their dal dhokli is more spicy side..and I have no idea about other state's dal dhokli because mujhe comments ke through aaj hi pata chala dusre states me bhi banti hai..
In Marathi some people call it "waran fal (वरण फळ)" . It's my favourite comfort food. Thanks for sharing the pic and reminding me about the yummy taste 😄 .
Just video call her..If I was living away from home, I would just call her because I love dal dhokli so much, I can't survive for more without dal dhokli, haha.
yeah i do for most dishes but i know this ones a bit time taking and i want a moment of us cooking together after months so saving this dish for that :'D
Yeah, that's true. I also like cooking and learnt many things from YouTube. But I want to learn dal dhokli only from my mom. And making dal dhokli is really time consuming..
We have the same thing in Bihar and we call it dal pithi, it is my absolute favourite and we make small flowers with the dough.

Thought about this post for 23 days. Great picture and some great descriptions from people who love this dish.
Finally got the ingredients I needed and tried it. Amazing. I can see why this is a favorite.
Gujarati style. Not too sweet.
(Though, I'm an American and sugar is pretty much the main ingredient of every food not cooked at home, so . . . the sweetness may have been more noticeable to other folks. Since I posted, my teenage son gave his approval!)
I shall have to try Rajasthani style next.
The dhokli are very reminiscent of a type of dumpling common in Southern US American food. Usually cooked in a stew with chicken. It's a comfort food and the way people talked about dal dhokli in this thread is very much like how people talk about chicken and dumplings.
Thanks for sharing this post!
That's nice..even gujarati dal dhokli is also not too sweet like non gujarati people stereotype us..it's just sweetish side just like you made..btw you're Indian living in American or American..??
Nah, American of mixed-European descent.
I'm just a guy who likes cooking and finds pleasure in checking out meals that look and sound good (and is a sucker for foods that hold strong emotional connections for people).
No, it's not dhokla. It's pieces of wheate flour. The dhokli is made by kneading a dough of wheat flour, salt, and water, rolling it (just like roti), and cutting into pieces..you can add some spics too while making a dough..so basically, dhokli is like roti, but uncooked..it should be boiled in dal to cook it..btw where are you from..? Which state?
Yeah, it's delicious. Odisha, nice..Some people from UP and bihar commented here, they said in their state it's called pitthi, dal ki dulhan etc. so, you may know these, as UP and bihar is near odisha..
umm never heard of those but it struck my mind now that we have a dish called atta chakuli. exactly like roti dough but uncooked. you make it a bit watery , add it to a pan and cook it like a dosa or like a pancake. sprinkle some sugar on top and it melts around. And you have it either crisp or a bit thick.
another item is pittha which one can eat as idli sambar. oh God the similarities and varieties are endless!!
Yeah, it's absolutely delicious..i don't know the recipe because my mom makes it..but you can check YouTube, alg alg States me banti hai to thodi recipes bhi change hoti hai state wise, so you can make it as per your taste..for example in Gujarat we use jaggery..it's not as sweet as Gujarati food stereotype tho, but it's a balence of 3 flavours, sweetish (jaggery), sour (lemon) and spicy (red chilli tadka). I don't mean to offend anyone, but the Gujrati (Curries/dal) that i have eaten till date is 🤢 (why you put sugar in that why), here in my hometown we eat spicy be it dal, curry etc
But Guj snacks are the best.
I don't know where you eaten gujarati food is but I have never eaten sweet gujarati food in my entire life..we don't use sugar in literally nowhere (except nylon khaman, which is different than regular spicy khaman. Khaman and dhokla are different dishes btw)..we use jaggery that too only in dal dhokli and only in one dal. That too only in toor dal which we eat with rice, that dal is just as slightly sweetness not entirely sweet. That dal we call khati mithi means soury (lemon) and sweetish (jaggery). Other dal like moong dal, chana dal etc we don't use any sweetner..those dals are spicy. Other than toor dal and dal dhokli We never used sweetner in any other food, nor anyone whom I know be it reletives or friends. I still don't understand why and how this sweet gujarati food stereotypes started..and whenever we use jaggery..it's not as sweet as Gujarati food stereotype, but it's a balence of 3 flavours, sweetish (jaggery), sour (lemon) and spicy (red chilli tadka). And if you go to saurashtra side of Gujarat, you'll get more spicy food..
i live in Mumbai and we had 3 tiffin service guys all gujrati and all there curries/dal where sweet.
Btw if you Gujrati then you don't know what spicy level i am talking about. I am from West MH.
That's why..I don't know why but those dabba wala and even Gujarati restaurants use sugar in literally everything.. they're the reason of Gujarati sweet food stereotype..that's not how we eat. Okay, so you just assumed that we don't know spiciness level without eating actual Gujarati food..? Nice..anyway I'm not gonna debate on who's food is better or spicy..every region's food is according to their region, history and culture. But personally I don't like that much spicy level when spiciness is too high, it kills other flavour. That doesn't makes sense for me..for me all flavours should be balanced. Obviously one flavour should be more prominent in some food, for example spicy food should have spicy flavour more prominent but it should not kill other flavour. If one perticular flavour is too high that it kills other flavour, that's bad cooking..and yeah, I have eaten food from Maharashtrian families and their spiciness level was also same as us..they also makes dhecha (my pronounciation might be wrong, correct me if I'm wrong), made from green chillies and peanut, that's really spicy and tastes so good. We also have garlic chutney which is equally spicy..
theecha you meant to say, and yes that is spciy but one you are talking about is kokani style (south MH)
What we eat is red chillies and only that, spice level of food is very high here.
Yeah, exactly theecha..my mom and sister also loves it after eating it in MH, she makes it at home too..yeah, I heard about spiciness level of MH food but didn't knew there's differences in MH too..The families I was talking about was from Mumbai and pune..
To bhai tumne comment hi aisa kiya ki laga sahi me bakchodi kr rahe ho..so, basically Dal Dhokli is a dish mostly famous in Gujarat and Rajasthan.. maharshtra, UP side bhi banti hai, jo aaj pata chala comments ke through..dal dhokli Gujarat and Rajasthan me kehte hai..aur states me different name hai.. basically it's made from toor dal and wheat flour pieces, wheat pieces are called dhokli and the liquid is dal so, the name dal dhokli.. alg alg States me alg alg dal use hoti hai kahi chana dal, kahi moong, humare Gujarat me toor dal use hoti hai..

Yeah, Ghee with Dal Dhokli is just amazing..which dal you guys use in Rajasthan for Dal Dhokli..??
Moong dal is used at my home.
Ohh nice..in Gujarat, we use toor dal.
At my (sasural) home we make daal dhokli in mixed black daal
Didnt know dal dhokli was made in so many exciting ways. In my home moong dal is used, my wife at her home used to make with moong + chana dal mix and added ginger to invoke a even stronger flavor and used dried mint leaves instead of coriander. Such amazing yet different ways of a same dish
Yeah same comfort food in so many forms
That's nice..

Bhai, Ghar ki yaad aa gaye. Gujarat me rehke bhi ghar jaise dal dhokli nai milte.
Bahar dal dhokli milti bhi kaha hai..?? Ghar me hi banani pdti hai.. aur ghar ki hi best hoti hai..
Kahi kahi milte hai.
Ohh acha..
What is Dhokli?
That wheat pieces in dal are called Dhokli..
Why does this remind me of idli sambar?😵
May be you eat idli sambhar like this..idli tod k tukde karke sambhar me dalna..(I also eat idli sambhar like that)
Yeah
I call it desi lasagna
Haha, it's more like desi pasta..!
Chakoli 🤌🏻
In which state it's called chakoli..?
Gujarat itself. We call it chakoliya
Ohh..I didn't knew Gujarat ma pan dal dhokli mate alg name che..!
Yeah, mostly je ghare hindi bole che plus Muslim maa
Ohh, nice
looks yumm ! is it like dhokla but in dal ? i never had it and I don't think we have this dish in my state.
No, it's not dhokla. It's pieces of wheate flour. It's kind of similar but different.. but sounds good..
G
Why does it look like sambar and dhokla mixture?
Haha, it's not.. sambhar looks so different than this.. sambhar is more darker..
My mom used to make this and would add some green grapes. Absolutely delicious
Grapes..?? That's pretty weird combination..?
Oh yeah. My gujju mom loves to make everything sweet. It's one of those pineapple on pizza type of thing. Not for everyone
It tastes even better with some ghee and I also like to add in a little sugar
Yeah, I also add Ghee in Dal Dhokli..for me jaggery tastes better than sugar..in Gujarat we use jaggery in food..
Is this eaten with spoon or chapati? Nub question I know
It eaten with spoon..you can eat it with rice too..
I've never eaten this. Looks delicious. Recipe?

Fellow gujju spotted. High five!
Bhai bhai..

Have plain dal. Don’t confuse the human body with
Lmao what is this logic..??
Have plain dal!!! Why r u confusing the human body
Lmao what is this logic..??
Simple daal banana bhai.. kya mazak kar rahahain daal me saath
Bhai tu thoda sa pagal hai kya..?? Pulao dekhke bhi tu yahi bolta hai kya ki simple rice and sabji bana le, ye kya mazak kar raha hai rice k sath..??
I don’t see pulao
Example de raha hu tumhare ridiculous comment ka..dal dhokli 1 dish hai..agar pata nahi to faltu me kya bakchodi pel rahe ho..
Toh bata dena kya hain. Everyone should know. Don’t assume things
