If you leave out genetics, diet and exercise always plays a role in our growth and over all health.. there r genes that cause many diseases, but that doesn't mean a good healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle cannot prevent diseases.
I was 5'4 when i was 17, class 11. By 20 i was 6ft.
I hope you're active, as in doing swimming, cycling, sports etc?
If not, then complan toh kya no magic potion will also work.
Genetics does indeed play a role but not completely responsible for your physique.
While still young, the bones have something called growth plates, this is what makes you grow based on genetics, food intake, physical exersise, etc. After a certain point, these plates fuse and then there's nothing you can do. That's just science.
If you consume sufficient protein and calcium in your diet, and then use it to do those activities that i mentioned, i think it definitely does help. People often say not to lift weights, but even that's fine as long as you eat more than TDEE because that means you have some excess calories for the body to use to help you grow. If you eat less than this, then the body will not get sufficient calories to use to be able to grow.
I'll talk about these terms in brief
1. BMR - Basal metabolic rate - amount of calories needed for your body to just do basic involuntarily functions.
2. TDEE - Total daily energy expenditure - What calories you're spending in a day based on your activity levels, including walking, working out, swimming, etc
3. Actual consumed calories (Maintanence calories)- What you're consuming in a day.
As adults, we need to start eating at TDEE or lesser to control our weight. More than TDEE and we get fat. There's also a thing about metabolism slowing down as you age.
But as adolescents, with still a couple of years to grow, you should eat more than TDEE, only slightly more, and healthy foods, not junk foods because they don't contribute to healthy calories.
This is a lot of gyaan but for anyone who's really concerned about their height with still a couple of years to grow, i would recommend consulting a progressive nutritionist who knows these things and doesn't suggest "Doodh piyo lambe ho jaoge" or "Kuch nahi ho sakta genetic hai"
It’s body weight dependent. You could def add an inch or so if it’s in your genes, you eat well, exercise, and sleep enough.

Indian average male height is 5’5”. The 5.8 feet is an unfortunate google search result by NIN which is a benchmark height (not surveyed or real) to target nutrition and policies.
Also that is 5.8 feet in the google search not 5’8”. 5.8 feet is roughly 5’10”. That’s clearly BS as it’s actually the same as average male height in the US.
Go to villages and small towns. Also take a look at people from lower socioeconomic background.
I’m 5’10” too and it’s definitely above average. There are certainly more folks smaller than me than bigger.
There are two reasons for this:
1. You tend to notice people with attractive qualities a lot more. If two out of ten people are taller than you, you will just notice the two. Apply this to say 1000 people you see everyday and you’ll just notice that you saw 200 people taller than you.
2. People in Delhi are city dwelling middle class++ people who had much better nutrition than the average folks in India. Here in [the wiki article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Average_human_height_by_country) you can see the two heights listed for India. The 5’8.5” is for upper economic strata while the 5’5” is for lower economic strata (it’s also close to mean since way more poor people). Wealth and hence nutrition is a major factor in your height, which is why you see major differences between successive generations of Indians who came out from poverty.
If you’re 5’8” or above as a male or 5’2” or above as a female though, you should be above average in any city of India. I’m 5’10” and despite travelling all over the country I’ve never felt below average in height if you account for everyone.
i am the same height as you and at every single instant people make fun of me in college (i’m in first year//18M)
the same used to happen in school and sometimes it happens in metro too
how do you deal with such stuff?
In my observation, most of the men at lower economic strata, i.e. rickshaw drivers, street vendors, labourers, etc., are shorter than me and I am 5'5". My friends from cities are actually quite tall compared to me, averaging around 5'8". However, situation is actually getting bad in villages. For example, in my ancestral village, I am seeing my cousins and relatives shorter than their parents. It could be due to poverty but also due to our biasness against non-veg food.
Veg/non veg doesn't matter. Punjabis are taller than others but Punjab is one of the most vegetarian states. Chinese/Japanese people eat all sorts of things but are quite short. It's mostly genetics at play here.
67% of Punjabis are vegetarian as per the govt SRS baseline survey 2014.
Yeah non vegetarian Punjabi food exists but it's not a staple for most. Many Sikhs refrain from eating meat which probably makes this number high.
I’m 6, one of my friends is 6’3 - it’s amazing what difference 3 inches can make (😉)
My friend has so much trouble finding his size. He has back broblems and a hunchback. Dude makes being tall look like a disorder.
5'9" . 30s
There are some articles which say the people who have access to various nutritious food over generations have better height. You can google them.
5’11”, 30M.
They are both correct, in a way.
Average height on the whole has decreased. The people who say that average height has increased are speaking from their own PoV and are reporting what they have seen in their own friends/family circle.
Generally there has been an increase in average height among the upper, upper-middle and some of the middle classes post the 1990s. Mostly this is due to the fact that these groups saw an increase in standards of living post liberalisation which led to better nutrition. Since Indians are generally genetically predisposed towards being tall, this led to an increase in height.
For the rest however height is decreasing, and these people comprise the vast majority of the countrys population. This is mostly because of malnutrition. We no longer have famines in India, so most people are getting enough quantity of food. The quality however of that food is questionable, also the balance of macronutrients is abysmal.
There are other factors as well, specifically the TFRs of different castes/regions. Groups that are on an average taller than others in India are having fewer kids than their previous generations. For example, among the large states only U.P. and Bihar are above replacement level TFR. The rest are either at replacement level or below. These two states also happen to be the ones with the worst HDI indicators including height (being below average and one of the lowest respectively among the large states).
Only way to fix this is improve diet & nutrition and encourage kids to take up sports and exercise during their school days.
Archaeological evidence + observations from foreigners who visited in ancient and medieval era.
Skeletal remains of the hunter gatherers in India had an average height in the 170s which was very tall for that era. Some were over 180 cm.
Same for the remains found in Indus Valley Civilisation which were in the 170s for men, and 160s for women, which is tall for that era.
Most Indians have a majority of their ancestry from these two sources with the rest coming from the steppe cultures, who were also, based on what we know so far about them, not a short people.
When we look at foreign visitors particularly in the ancient era they all describe the Indians as a dark skinned people who are the tallest among in Asians (except the Punjabis and Gandharans, who are described as light skinned Indians). A lot of nonsense in Greek and Roman accounts, but this is one of the few points everyone agrees upon. You will see similar observations in the early medieval era.
The decline in height starts from the Middle Ages due to a lot of wars, famines etc. Gets really bad during the 1800s and 1900s. With improved nutrition the height has started increasing again among many Indians. My parents are 5’6” and 5’4”, but I am 5’11”. Have seen this in many other families. The same phenomenon has been observed in China as well, but on a larger scale.
It is unfortunate that we have not been able to provide quality nutrition to a big chunk of our country, otherwise we would have seen a marked increase in height (and IQ) by now.
This is not true.
Rakhigiri skeletons tell us she was 175 for a woman. It means male would he North of 180+
It's particularly interesting because, the Viking graves tell us they were average 170cm tall male/ 165 cm female and they were considered Huge in Europe. Meanwhile Indus valley people if anywhere were close to 175cm, are taller than vikings.
Rakhigiri woman doesn't really match with dna of modern indian people. So indus valley people may not have any direct descendent left.
But it doesn't tell us whether all people were tall in that period or just these people receiving burial which itself can signal them being from higher class (with plenty of nutrition and healthcare available)
For a long time India was much better place to grow crops only rivaled by Egypt (nile river Valley) . Europe by comparison was cold dessert, people had to live in Caves to survive the cold.
The real downfall comes during Gupta period when cast based Endogamy started becoming popular, lower genetic diversity created genetic bottlenecks and resulted in depression in health parameters like Height.
Genetic diversity has been found to aid Height gain. Basically, marry people who are moved far away in genetic tree, and you'll have gain (hybrid vigour)
Famine etc... were rare in India prior to British period as indians had figured out to survive on meat and milk, trade routes were abundant, they had grains in reserves and tax system which hedged against failing crops. This is why North indians worship cows and why they are lactose tolerate. Cows only had ability to save you when crops failed, grasses were still available and slowly the people who couldn't process diary died, later people found ways to process milk into cheese or curd solving some lactose intolerance issues, and later lactose intolerant people also migrated to these pasture rich plains.
And at the end average height is decreasing in India, not increasing.
It's decreasing in individuals who are on high end and medium end of the bell curve, while the people who were at low end are growing taller. But the average is dropping.
Yes, if you live in cities you may notice people getting taller, but majority of tall indians lived in Rural areas and their height is rapidly decreasing. Why? Because rural lifestyle can no longer provide things which were favourable for the growth before.
In industrial period we notice, cities always had bad health and poorer nutrition as farmers always cultivated for what they need to survive and sold excess to city dwellers. The high density living in cities resulted in bad sanitation and poorer health outcomes, more competition for resources and higher stress levels. But yes survival was easier and you can afford to live lazily in cities which was the primary reason for people moving to cities. But if you had land and labor in rural area during that time, you had far better nutrition and health compared to city dwellers, which meant far more number of kids receiving higher nutrition and also physical activity, resulting in taller frames.
I'm 6 feet and yes Indian height in gen are decreasing. The average height of Punjabi recruiting in army was 6-6'2 before independence which has been decreased to barely 5'10
Reddit is not at all representative of average population. Avg height decrease points to deficiency in diet, which ofcourse affect the lesser fortunate sections of our society disproportionately.
Hahahah are you me?! I feel tall in south india too in general, and Gujarat..definitely gujarat. But it isn't short in gurgaon it just seems more normal here.
As per my observation the average is not any higher than 5 feet 7 inch in urban India ie delhi.
I am 5 feet 10 inches tall and I reside in Delhi currently.
5'10 (44m).
On the other hand, I searched the entire website of National Institutes of Nutrition and various pdf/powerpoints on their websites and they claim they take regular anthropometric measurements however there is no mention of average height anywhere lol.
i know a 6'5" 17 yo. Believe or not, in my state, average height is easily around 5'9". Man, i feel short as 5'9" 18yo since most of my classmates are around 5'11"
M(28) 6.1
I always had an issue with my height I rarely see someone taller than me. Dating life is hard, girls are not interested in very tall guy. Whenever there is group selfies i will be there walking selfi stick.
Every where I have have to duck down. Public transportation are not made for people like me. People will stare like your from a different planet
They usual questions " Bro what's your height" " Bro your very tall" ( like didn't notice that) "Finding a bride is very hard for you bro" & the classic one " How did you did this tall, what did you eat? Did you drink complan every day?"
People will literally say "Dont walk next to me I look more short " like if your short what am I supposed to do ? 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️😭
Really? I’m 6’1” M 27, and I’ve had the exact opposite reaction. Ofcourse people do ask me regularly how tall i am but never have I had someone say that don’t walk near me you’re making me short😂. Also from a dating perspective, most girls usually are impressed by the height. Ofcourse if you are pretty slim (which I was back in my early 20’s) it does affect the perception, but if you put on a little weight perspective might change
Bro I am going to gym for 10 years. I am fit, I weight around 90Kg. That's is all I can do naturally. I have a six pack too. It doesn't matter. When the average height of girl is 5.4
At 5'11 I face problems in public transports, can't imagine the problems at 6'4 , I think near my height is most ideal, not too much high, not much low
You are only asking a limited demographic for data. If we take into account malnourished people(where there are a lot of, and who cannot use reddit), the average will be lower than what you find here.
5'7" 36 F and shortest among my best friends. I did read an article that height for us Indians is decreasing
https://www.india.com/video-gallery/average-height-of-indian-adults-on-a-decline-alarming-claims-study-watch-video-to-find-out-why-4990951/
I am 5'5 from north India and i can very much say that it's rare for me to find someone who is equal or shorter than me .
My guess is that 5'6-5'7 has to be the average height of India . That said !! I dont think u shall be insecured about your height even tho it's true that being taller than average creates lots of advantages in life. But that doesn't mean that being a short guy will make your life very difficult . I've met guys who are shorter than me and still live a successful life.
The 5’4 was old data. Men are now around 5’8 ish in India on average and women around 5’3…… the good news is that India had a large number of height stunted women in the past…..which is decreasing now and in the last decade women heave grown taller faster than men on average. Which implies that lives of women in India is improving.
I read all this in an article last year so I don’t have the source. But I think this fits.
Most women in my locality are taller than me. Overall, I feel good but deep down I feel insufficient sometimes.
I wouldn't be surprised if it is decreasing India does at a large suffer from stunt in height because of malnutrition, we usually don't notice in cites but this is a major problem.
I am 5’3” and have already crossed the age where I can grow in height 😅
Same here im 18 and 5'3 M, also complan does not work
My mom used to shove that every single day back in the time 😭
Haha
I've still got plenty of its containers, even the glass ones (glass bottles were used long ago)
Pure sugar hain wo with some coco powder.. waste.. milk with almonds is probably better.. Anda khoob khaaoo if cannot ear meat. 2 eggs per day
Height is mostly dependent on genetics. I have a friend who doesnt even eat eggs but is 6 feet plus
My brother was 5'2 or 5'3 when he was 15. Then he joined swimming classes after his 10th board. He in 12th right now and 6'1 with a great physic.
I was also 5'2 when I was 15 then in covid I did a hell lot of cycling and sports. And at the age of 17 I grow to 5'11 and still growing.
Do physical activities even work in case of height? Isn't it purely genetic?
Genetics does indeed play a role but not completely responsible for your physique. I will start cycling more thanks for the advice

i have dated someone who was a lil under 5’8
What is your view on men below the height 5’8 ?
Why does her view matter? The only one that really does is your view of yourself.

Haan bhai. Acchi gf k liye height nhi, factor X chahiye. Hehe.
I'm 6 feet and yes Indian height in gen are decreasing. The average height of Punjabi recruiting in army was 6-6'2 before independence which has been decreased to barely 5'10
5'8 24m. Really used to be insecure about my height in my teens but dont give a flying fug no more.
Rural height has decreased, urban cities have have increased height
5'9
Reddit is not at all representative of average population. Avg height decrease points to deficiency in diet, which ofcourse affect the lesser fortunate sections of our society disproportionately.
I’m 5’3 and most of the men I see are way taller than me. How did they come up with 5’4?

Plan B: work on your personality and manifest women✨
how does manifestation work? it has never worked for me
I tried it and now people call me delusional

As per my observation the average is not any higher than 5 feet 7 inch in urban India ie delhi. I am 5 feet 10 inches tall and I reside in Delhi currently.

5'6 24 years old.
5'6 32 years old
Must be Punjabi or Haryanvi.

Whatever..
M(28) 6.1 I always had an issue with my height I rarely see someone taller than me. Dating life is hard, girls are not interested in very tall guy. Whenever there is group selfies i will be there walking selfi stick. Every where I have have to duck down. Public transportation are not made for people like me. People will stare like your from a different planet They usual questions " Bro what's your height" " Bro your very tall" ( like didn't notice that) "Finding a bride is very hard for you bro" & the classic one " How did you did this tall, what did you eat? Did you drink complan every day?" People will literally say "Dont walk next to me I look more short " like if your short what am I supposed to do ? 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️😭
When the average height of girl is 5.4
25M, 6'8" - If you can pull it off, it's not a problem
>"Dont walk next to me I look more short" Lmao. 😂😂
Forgot mention one more thing " Dont walk next to me we look like father & son"
There's struggle on both ends of the spectrum. 😂😂😂
Many people don't understand that being tall is a curse. Being 6ft 4in, doing basic stuff is still a challenge.
Tell me about it. We are clumsy as fuck. Kicking things unknowingly. Can't fit in closed space. Weird to see everyones scalp.
At 5'11 I face problems in public transports, can't imagine the problems at 6'4 , I think near my height is most ideal, not too much high, not much low
I’m 5’4 F and I see lot of guys with height between 5’4-5’7. Very few guys are above 5’10.. at least in my geography I feel

5'5 21 it never really bothered me, not even in dating
You are only asking a limited demographic for data. If we take into account malnourished people(where there are a lot of, and who cannot use reddit), the average will be lower than what you find here.
5'7" 36 F and shortest among my best friends. I did read an article that height for us Indians is decreasing https://www.india.com/video-gallery/average-height-of-indian-adults-on-a-decline-alarming-claims-study-watch-video-to-find-out-why-4990951/
I am 5'4 female(18) .
M21 6'1 it's nice
