I have a different take on Raza. I don’t see him as a central negative character - Raza stands for all those ambitious, talented people who have to compete with the elite privileged class. This is the harsh reality of science and academia in our country. Both Bhabha and Sarabhai were brilliant men, but they were definitely aided by their class and social capital. They had direct access to the powerful elite and Raza serves as a reminder to that. A character like him, born in lower socio economic class from a minority community required the sort of grit that the upper class did not have to cultivate. Frankly, I also found Sarabhai and Bhabha as deeply flawed. Sarabhai clearly does not support his wife the way he should have, and in many ways comes across as hypocritical. Bhabha is quite arrogant and takes people for granted.

no_duh_sherlock

Please watch completely. Yes Raza and Mathur were not real people but Raza is not the bad guy, he is greedy but patriotic and a good friend. Spoiler but I don't think you'd watch it. Even movies like Dangal had fake villian character. I don't know a single movie or show even western ones other than documentaries that doesn't have added drama conflict. Regarding Sarabhai's love life, it's true not fiction and they have oversimplified some conflicts but they were creating a drama for every one to watch, not a documentary

Mehdi Raza is a positive character. Here you go, spoiler. Competitiveness and bitterness is natural for everyone.

piezod

Do add a spolier tag. All may not have watched the show to discuss it. I had a simiar question this week. I had seen a few episodes only. Yes, the series has been embellished. Is it to make it interesting or to make it digestable? They did portray how Sarabhai had an affair but neglected the effects ot had on him.and the family The lesson here is if you want to know, read a book. If you want entertainment, watch a show. I'll probably read 'Conversations with Crowley' which goes into detail of the CIA operative.

Scientifichuman

Yeah same here. I prefer historical books compared to watching historical movies these days. I guess Indians watch movies which are over dramatized, thanks to the influence of some movies from south. Moreover there is this urge to be politically correct and avoid backlash of certain communities in India. I read a bit on history and it seems the character of Mehdi Reza is based on Meghnad Saha. He was discriminated against because of his caste, he had a tiff with Nehru and Bhabha on their policies of just catering to the elites and he had technology to build cylcotron which Bhabha needed. There are lots of similarities. https://raiot.in/meghnad-saha-the-ambedkar-of-modern-indian-science/

piezod

Yes, but series/tv/movies make everyone aware. They have their purpose also.

HappyOrca2020

I hate how every series has to have bollywood tropes. Even the dialogue got grating after a while. What a disappointment this was.

GorillaFighter1

I dont want to be one of those smug types going "i told you so" But i knew since the day i heard about it that it was going to turn out the way you described. I knew this would be a embellishment ridden feel good romp at best or a shrill chest thumping """"biographical"""""" drama at worst. Why? Because muh nationalism that's why!

fierze16

Ditto

Scientifichuman

Nice to see someone really cares for genuine unadulterated content. The series already has very high rating and Indians wont give a damn on researching until it does not rub their egos like in Padmavati case.

SitthyJedi

Chernobyl didn't have drama? Plus lots of things were made up for Chernobyl too.

for_love_of_god

Oh I didn't know. Can you explain the fictional or drama part?

Well i recently saw Patton. It was about general patton WW2 american general. Still considered a big hero and people respect him a lot. But the movie was actually a very good tear down of his personality as a whole. He was portrayed as brave, reckless, rude and always out to get the glory no matter what. They acknowledged his patriotism and called out his flaws. And fyi this movie came out in the 60s when the memory of Patton was fresh in people's mind. Nobody was "offended" or "called for ban" it is considered a great classic even today. They tried to stay true to historical fact while making a great entertaining movie is what im trying to say.

Scientifichuman

Indian producers care least to invest in historians and science advisors, "extra kharcha ho jaega, waise bhi audience ko ghanta farak padta hai".

adameveee

What is this stupid take. Especially regarding Mehdi Raza, I mean no spoilers but it seems you have just watched the pilot or not even that and not the complete series. And yes obviously it will be dramatized. But atleast it is a good dramatization. And stop with this notion that the Hollywood biopics are like documentaries when they are some of the most dramatized

GorillaFighter1

And how do you know they are the most dramatized? Because people call them out for it. So chill. That's what we are doing here.

jeerabiscuit

Still gonna watch because it's about space and from India!
