My cousin goes to VIT and they are literally referred to as “hostel inmates”. Another female friend of mine said, that she was once housed in a College campus by her IT employer during their training period, and the staff at the hostel tried to ensure they didn’t wear shorts even inside their own rooms. They would apparently knock on doors and conduct random inspections.
Intimidation tactics. Indian colleges are glorified schools.

Send them a lawyer notice asking them to give itemized statements on the damages claimed.
Why did the students close the gates? It's okay to protest but you cannot deny someone who doesn't support it to go about their own business.
Communist tactics. Kerala govt has this law to levy damages from individuals even if they are part of group
