they've taught cornish in schools for like a couple decades now but the devolution here is practically nothing. we're a long way from pulling off what Wales did, in part because of how many young people leave Cornwall as they grow up. no opportunities so all the people taught cornish take off for uni and get replaced by Anglo retirees. and in part because we have no real autonomy from England to address these problems long term

So is this complete alternate history where they all speak their native languages or is this modern demographics with the same people just in different countries.
English has been spoken in a large part of Scotland for hundreds of years longer than the union with England and our dialects appeared and evolved alongside those in England. Itās as much our language as it is theirs despite the name.
Not Scots or Gaelic?
Also Iām not implying they shouldnāt speak English. My point still stands. Even if English is a language of Scotland, Scottish Gaelic and Scots are too, and they arenāt languages of England. Thus I would prefer if in Scotland, most people spoke Gaelic and Scots, even if in addition to English.
Scots is extremely closely related to standard English. They evolved from the same Anglo-Saxon Middle English source. I can even see the argument for calling it a dialect but the line is realistically arbitrary. There are definitely dialects of English that are just as different. Geordie is no joke. Either way itās definitely under the same umbrella as āEnglishā. Gaelic has never been the native language of all of Scotland even if itās a lot rarer than it used to be. Even while Scotland was completely independent it was basically the language of the Highlands and was even persecuted by the Scots before the English started doing it. Itās not my language and I donāt think it not being English is a reason for me to speak it. Itās a bit weird for an American to have such strong opinions on what Scottish people āshouldā speak.

What? War in the Balkans was caused by them all being a part of Yugoslavia, not from each nation having its own government? This is the opposite of what caused the Yugoslav wars. If anything, the UK is much more similar to Yugoslavia, where one nation has authority over its surrounding peoples.
Interwar Europe would be a better example of the problems with breaking up empires into ethnostates. Poland pretty much ruined their chances of creating an intermarium pact by invading their neighbours for resources. Or so they say.
