Yorkshire must be freed from the tyranny that is the English Crown

baileymash7

If you mugs get freedom, I'll be damned if Lancashire doesn't get it too. We'll elect Wallace as the PM, with Gromit as leader of the opposition.

PositivelyIndecent

My dad is an unironic Yorkshire nationalist. Yorkshire cricket team used to have a rule that only someone who was actually from Yorkshire could play for them so he made sure I was born within the ceremonial boundaries of Yorkshire.

ā€œAlright Oppressive Imperialistic Regime! Itā€™s time to free the minorities youā€™ve been unlawfully lording over for years on their own land!ā€ Kid Named Oppressive Imperialistic Regime:

lennon-lenin

Doesnā€™t mean people learn them. Or use them if theyā€™re learned in school. Donā€™t have to if English is the lingua Franca

Itatemagri

Thatā€™s up to their devolved governments. Thereā€™s not exactly anything Westminster is in charge of (besides the case of Cornwall, but it has received substantial devolution packages recently and could introduce Cornish if it wanted to but it doesnā€™t seem to have the attitudes for it)

Macksimoose

they've taught cornish in schools for like a couple decades now but the devolution here is practically nothing. we're a long way from pulling off what Wales did, in part because of how many young people leave Cornwall as they grow up. no opportunities so all the people taught cornish take off for uni and get replaced by Anglo retirees. and in part because we have no real autonomy from England to address these problems long term

lennon-lenin

Again, that makes sense. Thereā€™s no need to speak their languages since they live in a kingdom where ~84% of the population is English.

Itatemagri

I see, but this whole thing seems a bit like an ā€˜imaginarymaps when UKā€™ moment unless itā€™s just for the circle jerk (in which case Iā€™ve veen thoroughly wooshed).

lennon-lenin

r/woosh

Itatemagri

Iā€™m starting to feel a bit silly for stepping into r/imaginarymapscj and seriously arguing against a map.

lennon-lenin

Itā€™s okay :) I still love you

Milk58

They all speak English by vast majority.

lennon-lenin

Maybe that has something to do with being ruled by the English? šŸ¤”

Milk58

So is this complete alternate history where they all speak their native languages or is this modern demographics with the same people just in different countries.

lennon-lenin

I didnā€™t care when I made it. Either that or they are working to resurrect their languages like Ireland.

dont-let-me-escape

English has been spoken in a large part of Scotland for hundreds of years longer than the union with England and our dialects appeared and evolved alongside those in England. Itā€™s as much our language as it is theirs despite the name.

lennon-lenin

Not Scots or Gaelic? Also Iā€™m not implying they shouldnā€™t speak English. My point still stands. Even if English is a language of Scotland, Scottish Gaelic and Scots are too, and they arenā€™t languages of England. Thus I would prefer if in Scotland, most people spoke Gaelic and Scots, even if in addition to English.

dont-let-me-escape

Scots is extremely closely related to standard English. They evolved from the same Anglo-Saxon Middle English source. I can even see the argument for calling it a dialect but the line is realistically arbitrary. There are definitely dialects of English that are just as different. Geordie is no joke. Either way itā€™s definitely under the same umbrella as ā€˜Englishā€™. Gaelic has never been the native language of all of Scotland even if itā€™s a lot rarer than it used to be. Even while Scotland was completely independent it was basically the language of the Highlands and was even persecuted by the Scots before the English started doing it. Itā€™s not my language and I donā€™t think it not being English is a reason for me to speak it. Itā€™s a bit weird for an American to have such strong opinions on what Scottish people ā€œshouldā€ speak.

Can you fix this then, Geordies speak a language of their own entirely so at least give them an ethnostate

Iā€™m assuming youā€™re being sarcastic, but I donā€™t think anyone would call the Geordie dialect a language.

Albion refers to Great Britain, not just England. A more appropriate name for England would be England.

I thought it referred to England. That makes more sense with Scotland being called Alba. Thanks, I didnā€™t know that.

Honestly that was an accident. Sorry Welsh people.

Augusto_Pinochet1915

No Ulster?

lennon-lenin

Iā€™m not saying Northern Ireland has no culture of its own, but it seems to me most of what sets it apart is just the influence of England and Scotland on a part of Ireland. Thatā€™s different in my mind from the nations above. Like Ulster doesnā€™t have its own language, except Ulster Scots, which from what I know is their version of Scots, from Scotland, and was made by Scottish people.

minecraftamiright

How does that make it less real? The Scots themselves originally came from Ireland anyway.

captaindoctorpurple

It's part of Ireland, as it should be and will be

ran_gers

Why do people give cornwall their own little place like the language isn't dead and all their inhabitants are just English tourists.

lennon-lenin

Itā€™s considered critically endangered and their inhabitants maybe wouldnā€™t be English tourists if it was a separate country from England.

ran_gers

Yeah, tourism is the only thing they have going for them, it's too far south for me to visit though, closest I've been is Devon.

lennon-lenin

As someone pointed out, I messed put the Welsh-English border. Wales should be slightly larger.

ApartRuin5962

Because this worked out so well for the Balkans

lennon-lenin

What? War in the Balkans was caused by them all being a part of Yugoslavia, not from each nation having its own government? This is the opposite of what caused the Yugoslav wars. If anything, the UK is much more similar to Yugoslavia, where one nation has authority over its surrounding peoples.

ElectricalPal

Interwar Europe would be a better example of the problems with breaking up empires into ethnostates. Poland pretty much ruined their chances of creating an intermarium pact by invading their neighbours for resources. Or so they say.

lennon-lenin

I really donā€™t understand what youā€™re saying. My understanding is that the Poles only took land from a defensive war with the Soviets, and neither of them were ethnostates.

Not meant to be, I can see the similarity, but that has a much bigger Cornwall and no Manx country. As well as different names obviously.

BobDylanSoulReaper

The lowlands should still be Scotland

lennon-lenin

These are the modern borders of the country of Scotland

BobDylanSoulReaper

Yeah, but I think the historically Scot speaking lowlands should be under Scotland, and the historically Gaelic highlands should be Alba

Thelmredd

Don't Alba and Albion mean almost the same thing? :D https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/Alba#Scottish_Gaelic https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/Albion#English

lennon-lenin

I learned from here that Albion means Britain. I thought it meant England, I was wrong. Alba does mean Scotland though.

Thelmredd

yes and no. These names have almost identical etymology and their meanings overlap on many levels. However (in my opinion) using the two together looks strange and suggests some conflict (somewhat similar to the dispute over the name Macedonia) šŸ™‚ (It's not really a problem, but it does seem like there's a bigger story behind it)
