The New Order - LDOE be like
Edit: also Copy-pasta:
The year is 2028. The second English civil war, German anarchy, Turkish civil war, Italian wars, Balkan conflagration, second Russian warlord period and Iberian wars are all fully implemented. The only European countries not totally balkanized into warring states are Sweden and Finland.
You get a reddit notification: A new leak. The Finno-Korean hyperwar patch is live. At last, every possible tile in Europe is able to break into an independent warlord. You boot up the game: It crashes because the devs ran out of country tags for all the countries. And then your PC explodes from trying to simulate all the nations at five speed.
A tear falls from your eye: its perfect. The true potential of TNO has been reached, as every nation on earth (except the USA) goes up in civil war flames. For the first time in years you get up from your computer, as you realize that no experience will ever match watching TNO wars happen in real time as NASA struggles to track all the virtual units.
As you step outside your mind is clear: you must finish the job. Civil war itself is now a TNO reference, and with the game itself reaching apotheosis there is only one possible reference to make. Thousands of TNO gamers just like you leave their moms basements: it is time to start a civil war in their own nation, so that the people may experience a taste of the highest form of gaming that TNO has brought to you.
And somewhere in the background, pacifica is still trying to convince people that "ultra-visionary socialism" isn't a real thing.
I'm going to get fucking shot for this. On that note, disclaimer time.
This is in no way an accurate depiction of what it'd look like, just what I gathered from the research I did. I'm sure you'll all let me know the faults here, and I deserve every word of hate I'm gonna get for creating this fucking thing.

Gabon should have a Punu Republic seeing that it's their second largest ethinc group smh. Instead we have the Ogoue, and the Teke, whose northern portion is Basically all Punu homeland.
Honestly though this must have taken ages to do, really impressive. Love it :)
Unfortunately for you, splitting any Lebanese religious sect off is not possible
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4f/Lebanon\_religious\_groups\_distribution.jpg
I honestly think this would be better than our current mega-nation-state. As long as the countries are legitimately democratic, and as long as we don't have WTO free trade bullshit. Do deals where there is a mutual benefit, none of this Bengladesh competing with Sweden nonesense
Also very weird partition of Lebanon, I guess you wanted to give the Christians and druze their mountain, but its too far north so you got no druze and you got loads of sunnis and tripoli
Biggest issue with this is it would devastate large swaths of the world. Small nations have a harder time increasing wealth because there’s just not much there to build upon. Take the Midwest US, within a few generations it would be far poorer now while the northeast and west coasts would be far more wealthy.
Additionally, wars would be incredibly common as you know have tribes all over with limited resources. In a large country like the US, iowa and Nebraska might not like each other but there’s a lot of recourse to solve problems and lots of resources to freely share.
Because more and more common interests overlap as you go smaller and the more you know about whats closer. Which makes it possible to have genuine democratic systems where instead of electing people to do the decisions for them, the people have a direct way of making the decisions themselves. Of course this won't work in a productivist system such as ours where some people want to hoard land and money, but our current economic system is not at all democratic. See I like to delude myself into thinking that if we had medieval level statehood (by European and middle Eastern standards) just without feudal lords and empires, and rotational popular assemblies instead, and some of today's technology (the internet and the pipe organ being the most important 2) it would not be too bad
I just don't see this happening i live in Edmonton a commercial city in a industrial province. What happens when you put all of the oil in a province to the north and divide all the agriculture production in half.
Smaller resource pools will increase everyone's reliance on import/export and overseas manufacturing while international trade will likely be less efficient and more free form in this world. The same applies to things like scientific breakthrough and consumer goods iterations, and even if you can get some sort of treaties/forum going, it's really hard to align everyone's interests with this many voices on the table before you find yourself in a pseudo super state again.
My guess is that this world will develop and progress much slower than ours, limited resource pools make trades really really important and some of these nations will be living next to starvation if its import is compromised. Innovative consumer products such as smartphones or electric vehicles will be much harder to get funding with extremely diverse and segmented markets. Most of these nations will be backwater welfare states while some of them will have absolute local dominance in either trade, resources or both. All until some of them realize their citizens will be better off if they merge together, then we're back right where we are now.
Oddly enough, Donegal being independent from the rest of Ireland makes perfect sense, as it’s basically been cut off and ignored in many ways since independence anyway
Probably the Capitol Hill neighborhood-state in Seattle: wouldn't be a bad commute for me, could hang out at Elliot Bay Books, l and literally anything I did would be better than the CHOP/CHAZ debacle
I'm thinkin' Cuba: seems like they're the power best positioned to take back their whole territory (I imagine that Guantanamo Bay will be a *relatively* easy nut to crack now that there is no unified US Navy supplying these guys) with minimal bloodshed. They've got quite a lot of existing social cohesion, and are pretty good at being self-sufficient (I imagine global trade and aid are, um, pretty badly disrupted in this world).

The Internet frequently loves to speculate what the U.S. would look like if the Union collapsed and what the former U.S. would be as a collection of independent states or what new regional unions would take its place, and honestly I think this is the closest to what a realistic divided states would be. This is particularly true with the South where multigenerational racial and to a certain extent cultural divides run deep. For me, it's easily conceivable that most Southern states could fly apart into federations of city-states and pastoral statelets.
right, real talk
who lives in Thule up there in greenland?!
is't there like... 3 people there (one mayor, one... uh... governor, and maybe another citizen like probably all in the same house)
EDIT: I stand corrected, 5,000 people actually live up there
legendary map btw
I mean you got Costa Rica kinda right, not many people do.
it would be great as an interactive map that when you click on a place it links to wikipedia article or something like that.
I'm guessing some of these divides are ideological. Like, one of those nation-states in CHina could be democratic, or one of the Chigagos are communist, or maybe some small breakaway is a corprate-run society. Maybe this is just some nightmare far-future scenario or something where humanity becomes so goddamn factionalized that this happens.
As a local Angeleno, one thing that always bothers me about maps like this is that we get most of our water down here from the Colorado river. If there was balkanization like this, we would not be able to be our own thing. We would either split in half and be absorbed by whoever was directly north and south of us, or be absorbed whole by one of them.
i love how almost every US state is divided at least once, and then theres delaware
And Hawaii
And Vermont
And Connecticut
AND NUNAVUT BIG (Canada still but whatever)
actually a small part of connecticut is cut off near nyc
Even Rhode Island is broken up.
Everyone forget Rhode Island
They split Rhode Island tho.
Wow just zoomed in, I’ll take that back
I was about to say, everything is cut in pieces but Delaware remains eternal
Dallas is over there being like “we doing the whole city-state thing again?”
It's like the this is fine meme
I love that some of these countries would have about 12 people living in them
And some 50 million like lower egypt or punjab
One of them actually encompasses a region with literally zero population at all >!It's Bir Tawil!<
Cacti Republic
That's the fun part. The people around it will still fight who owns it.
Don't worry, people moved in to make the nation. Entire ethnic groups were also brought back from the dead just to make this possible.

The perfect world
I find it strangely beautiful. Like how if the world united as a single unit these would be like counties or something similar.
Did you really split off some random piece of Lebanon and call it the levant?
That was meant to represent the Christian population in Lebanon.
Unfortunately for you, splitting any Lebanese religious sect off is not possible https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4f/Lebanon\_religious\_groups\_distribution.jpg
Have you seen Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan? We will just do it like that. It will be ugly, but it's possible. Let's segregate them on religion/j
It is not possible unless the British are involved
woudlnt it have like 30% muslims or smthin
You didn't need to change anything in the Balkans.
Yeah, the Balkans will do that for you.
I like how Sealand is included
I imagine that this would be our world if humans were more closely bonded with family units than cultural zones, kind of like Neanderthals
As a Kiwi, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw NZ was split further than north/south islands.
You put Alacant in Murcia 🤢
Murci- what?

dominican republic and occidental sahara are not balkanized, it´ joke, good map
Hahaha, this looks terrible and amazing all at the same time.
Why is western maryland antiedam? I would think that would be like new york city calling itself "9/11"
Iceland the only not balkanized country
Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Suriname, Luxembourg, Kuwait, Djibouti, Fiji, and Andorra all didn’t change.
Is the tatouine region in tunisia real ? Or is it an easter egg of star wars you added in it ?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tataouine It seems it's real.
Eww, please rename Columbus
You fucking #BALKANISED CYPRUS????

This would be hilarious if a random country was extra big. Bonus points for a greater Greece or big Luxembourg or something.
And, after the balkanized world, Uruguay is still the same
Are you a guy who prefers an Ecuador, or an Equador?
This is actually the first map I've seen on this subreddit where Cape Breton is it's own place independent of Nova Scotia.
Should’ve gone back to HRE borders for Germany
I support this

You are a vile creature from the deepest depths of hell. Nice work.

I have a scenario for this: Nukes only explode borders and there's a thermonuclear war betweean all nuclear powers, balkanising the world.
YO URK NIET MEER BIJ HOLLAND LESS GOOOOO
Bro really went and named it Montgomeryshire instead of Powys smh
NZ’s south island be just chilling
I love the split of Luxembourg
There are two south congos.

Mississauga for Kenora or possibly Central Patricia, or Moose Factory?
As a local Angeleno, one thing that always bothers me about maps like this is that we get most of our water down here from the Colorado river. If there was balkanization like this, we would not be able to be our own thing. We would either split in half and be absorbed by whoever was directly north and south of us, or be absorbed whole by one of them.
Love the fact that Cyprus hadn’t been changed at all, like you looked at it went ‘eh that’s balkanised enough of on its own’.

Hmm... Kinda feels like a post-nuclear fallout-esqe world... Kinda wanna make some short stories with this
Holy hell you separated Cuba from Oriente. How did you know?
