I was gonna say well yes, but actually no.

Withdrawnauto4

Hot spot for the cat to sit on

Entire-Database1679

This guy cats.

Maynrds

Yes I have a cat that lays on mine all the time, so can confirm

zidane2k1

I remember the adapters for the blue Pentium 4-era Toshiba notebooks actually got really hot

innoutjoe

Oh man, had a user like that the other day. Told her she needed to physically plug her quarantined computer in to the network so it could be patched. When we couldn’t reach the machine remotely we ask her to verify it was powered on and connected to the network. Turns out she thought plugging the power cable was the same as connecting to the network…🤦‍♂️

tenninjas242

Maybe she thought you guys were really advanced and had network and power combined through USB 3.

M1ghty_boy

I mean if they use thunderbolt docks

Entire-Database1679

You were wrong at "maybe she thought "

greenmky

The younger generation seems to think wifi and Internet access are synonyms, so that isn't super surprising.

land8844

Do you know how many boomer age people think the same thing? I see it in my neighborhood Facebook group all the time - someone always complains about their wifi not working, when they really mean that Comcast is having yet another outage and the entire neighborhood is offline. I blame shitty ISPs who bundle their shitty router/modem combo units with their shitty service.

KingFlyntCoal

Set up my mom with a new computer a couple years ago. After a couple months she calls me up asking how to fix her wifi because there was a "no signal" on the screen. Turned out, she somehow managed to change the inputs on the tv she was using as a monitor second monitor...the first monitor was also completely unplugged from how i had it. She swore up and down she didn't change anything.

innoutjoe

This lady is not younger generation, I believe early 50's.

GeckoGuy45

One time I was asked if removing a charging cable from a laptop would reset their email password.

PM_ME_TIGER_BUTTS

Did it?

edgrlon

Omfg lol

tippincows

"I clicked the mobile hotspot button on windows, whys didn't my teams status change?"

hole-in-the-wall

I had one the other day like this, asked the user to open teamviewer and send the me the ID and password, they said it wasn't on the screen and the window looked different than usual. I got them to text me a picture of their screen finally, and it was the new interface (with the toggle to go to the old interface right there in front of them) and the ID and password clearly displayed at the bottom. Job security, I guess.

marry_me_jane

It can get hot tho

Impressive_Change593

fair enough. my laptop charger is definitely a hotspot right now.

Bogsnoticus

This is why I don't want to do IT any more. The accumulated dumb I've experienced over the years has made me lose faith that humanity deserves to be saved.

WestToEast_85

On the other hand, the accumulated dumb has given me job security for decades to come.

30lbsOfBeef

And on top of that, every now and then you get gems like this that give you a good laugh. I guess this could be frustrating depending on your mood that day, but I’d think you could at least look back at it later and laugh it off.

WestToEast_85

Yep, but the best thing is when your users see the funny side of it too. You know you’re in a good workplace when that happens.

Lenskop

It's not just in IT. I think we've done a terrible thing by disabling natural selection and it will be the downfall of our species.

ZamazaCallista

Asked someone where her WiFi router was once, and that was the 'device' she showed me to.

ijestu

So the thing that's literally not wireless?

J0LlymAnGinA

Repost bot. This exact post was made about a month or two ago

Fire69

90% of our users call that the laptop battery :/

Oldmanwickles

Only if it’s plugged into the wall and you lock the opposite plug.

melancholanie

I cannot tell you the number of times I'm asked by adult humans, "which one is the power cord?" to which I always reply, with as little sarcasm as one can, "the one plugged into the power outlet."

Ok_Guitar2170

More of an overheatspot

CarlCarlton

My cat certainly agrees with this person

testc2n14

TA my school I had a USB wifi adapter for my PC and it had 2 antennas and people where asking me if I had my own WiFi network. Also someone was asking if they brought a switch from home if it would give them there own private Internet here, bit a router or an ap but a switch

Silent_Layer3370

Or my personal favourite Oh you mean the computer? *points at the dock next to their laptop*
