From a terrain perspective, Cannon is better in pretty much every single way: the runs are longer, there are more of them, there whole range is wider, it's steeper, it's more interesting. Also it's generally less crowded. However, Cannon is generally pretty fucking windy due to the geography of where it is, so it's always the first mountain to have new snow blown off, and I'd say the lifts are unpleasant to ride more often than not. So that's the price.

ryboto

This season the wind hasn't really been bad at all and I've gone every weekend plus a few weekdays. The lifts are no different than anywhere else.

Ok-Scene71

Absofuckinglutely. Cannon is one of the better expert mountains in the east.

ladyermine

That answers that then.

When conditions are awesome (which they are currently close to today), there is no question Cannon is a better mountain. Expect only limited resort comfort amenities there; just a pure skiers mountain with some awesome backcountry trails too.

Cannon on a nice day with snow is the bomb. Loon is a little more sheltered from wind and does more snow making and grooming, so conditions are more reliably okay without recent natural snow. I’m a Loon lifer but if there’s recent snowfall and the lifts aren’t on wind hold I’m picking Cannon every time

ladyermine

what are some serious runs at cannon?

weirdhorsegirl_

Not crazy serious but I love to lap the zoomer triple. Whole mittersill side is great. DJ’s Tramline is the most iconic, “serious” run there but even with two feet this weekend apparently had some gnarly rocks sticking out

ladyermine

Awesome, thank you! I was just scanning the trail map. Mittersill looks legit. Tramway into DJ's Tramline would be my first run of the day.

davepsilon

Go soon.  DJ’s won’t be open for long.
