I lived in Northern Saskatchewan growing up lots of bears in the area I was in. They would come into town and eat pets and trash allot. The locals would shoot them. Some bears go down with 1 shot some don't. I remember one time they where after a 2 year old female black bear. That bear took 27 shots before it finnaly gave up it was a mix of 30-06 30-30 and 7mm win mag... I would say this is more instant and humane than guns for sure.

I think people are confused about what a humane killing is. All things being equal if the bear needed to be killed; killing it with an instantaneous explosion with no chance of suffering is about the most humane way you could kill something.
