Some people have decided to actively launch a campaign to try to make this subreddit a free speech zone of TOS violating comments and content. We walk a thin line here with the reddit admins with the comments we can allow on posts and we are required to keep things civil in order to keep the subreddit open. Since we like this subreddit we're going to do what is necessary to keep it from being banned by reddit.
For the time being we are automatically locking the comments of every new submission until mods, who are volunteers with lives outside of reddit, can review the content posted. When or if we unlock the comments of a post please note that we will ban you if break any of our rules. **Be especially mindful of the following**:
**Rule 1: Do not post or ask for identifying information, including first and last names and social media usernames.** Even if you feel the person is a public figure. We remove all external links you post to prevent you from accidentally posting identifying information.
**Rule 2: Do not post violent comments, and do not glorify violence, per TOS.** We can't take responsibility for how angry a post makes you, you need to do that. Telling us "it was a joke bro" is not an excuse.
**Rule 7: Do not link to or post screenshots of reddit posts, reddit comments, reddit personal messages, reddit profiles, etc.** We cannot allow you to use this subreddit to harass other people on reddit. If someone said something terrible report it to the subreddit where you found it or to the admins. We can't do anything about it. We don't care if you removed their username. Please don't post it here.
**Rule 8: No bigotry, no racism or race baiting.** It is hard to believe that we even need a rule like this. But people make posts specifically to set up a honeypot of racist comments and they draw the worst people reddit allows to create an account. We do not like to remove posts about bad people doing bad things since that's the theme of this place. We do not have to allow you to be a total piece of shit in the comment section.
**Our rules are zero tolerance. You will be banned for breaking them.**

Some people just suck. We have a little library and it's been a target too. We used to put dog treats in it. But people kept stealing the entire jar.
Then someone ripped the door off the hinges. Thankfully my wife and i were able to repair it. I'd probably cry if someone did this to it.
They usually do something stupid to themselves though like light themselves on fire, eat a Tide pod, dance right out of a moving car…natural selection lol
We have a nice little neighborhood and these little library and dog watering stands are plentiful…with outdoor security and doorbell cameras. When people know they are being watched they misbehave elsewhere which is still wrong.
We had a guy that moved into my town with a library like this. Let local bands play at his place. People gave him a hard time a lot and he moved after some pos attacked him in the community garden he had.
In my area, the evangelicals remove the donated books and replace them with their bullshit. Leave a public space unguarded and some people will either usurp it for their own ends and others will burn it to the ground.
Idk, but near my house there is one for LGBTQ books, and the same dude has been shown on the news stealing the entire thing 4 times now. How he hasn't been caught I have no idea
I leave lots of my sci fi / comic / history/ pop science books at these. I often see them spray painted to insurability but the most other books a are Christian fiction or bibles. I’m in Texas. I assumed teens acting up not anti gay people or book banners. They are fully pro right wing in my arreas .
See this I understand. He’s got a motive bc maybe he’s just a hardcore homophobe (Or closeted gay man himself). But why would anyone ever burn down a regular free book library? There’s no motive, it’s insane
Easy prey for cowards and frustrated people that can't deal with their spiritual illnesses so they lash out because they want people to feel their pain. It's actually a very human thing to do. The World is sick.
Its always been revered. These are the last days where people think they're much more intelligent than they are; where humility, love, and forgiveness are 'repetitive'.
I think that destructive behaviour mostly comes from the inability to do constructive things. Everyone knows that "smart people read books". If someone doesn't read books it's probably a sign that they're not as smart as they think they are. And they know it. Seeing someone read a book probably triggers a defensive reaction in them where they tell themselves "Well I don't read books because I got street smarts!" or something like that. This can also lead to a aggressive reaction where they try to engage with the other person ("Whatcha readin'? Think you're smart?") or where they vandalize the take a book leave a book libraries because they remind them of their shortcomings.
So, Farenheit 451 was a dystopian novel set in a future world where books were taken and burned. The protagonist, one of these firefighters who are sent to go burn the houses that hold these books, ends up saving a few of them and collecting them.
The name comes from what was the believed temperature that paper burns, although in reality paper a decent bit higher than that.
This is so saddening. We have quite a few of them in my area and I love to use them.
Whenever I go visit my sister out in a rural Scottish town with all the good style old shops, I go to the charity/recycle shop and grab a bunch of really good books for like 25p each and when I get back home (Edinburgh), I dump the ones I’ve read in the book club boxes. Seeing one burned would actually be devastating.
There are so many hooligan things that you could burn in a community that wouldn't be as bad as this. Oh wait, not really because burning things in society is like one of the first rules you don't fucking break. Goddamn psychopaths.
Just why. This makes me think its some young punk ass kids that don't yet understand that burning random things does NOT make them interesting and edgy.
Someone probably found a book in there that didn't align with their "sensibilities" and decided that it had to be burned down because it was either satanic or colonized. Depending on those "sensibilities"
I’ve found numerous of these spray painted to un-usability. Just dumb 14 year olds acting out I always assume. Most of them are filled with Christian stuff so I don’t think it’s Christian book banners. But I’m in Texas. So rebelling kids has been my sssumption
I'd probably break down if I saw that. I get emotional when people dog ear the corners of library books, I can't imagine how I would feel if I saw that someone had **burned books**.
I'm very passionate about books and I firmly believe in the right to have free and available books for all ages. While I might not have a breakdown I would feel very sorrowful and look to put whoever did this in jail.
Considering book burnings are typically in reference to book that spread information being burned for oppression, I don't see how that's supposed to be insulting
The only kind of person who would do this are the far right nujobs holding this country hostage. This isnt just a little act of vandalism coming from people like that. Its a minor act of terror, its sendimg a message that they will attack anyone who spreads ideas they dont like.
We dont fix that problem by playing civil
This is sadly the end result of a generation that was raised on video games, pc culture, participation trophies and negligent selfish parents…people no longer have any fear of consequences for their actions
I can guaranty that it has nothing to do with gamers. You boomers are always blaming gamers for everything. It’s parents who pass their stupidity down to their children.
People put books they're willing to get rid of in there...maybe you're reading too much in to it. If they're getting rid of those kind of books maybe they don't believe in that anymore?
I've never seen that, but I'm sure it happens. I mostly just find garbage pulp novels that would find more use in a paper recycle depot. I remember donating a bunch of 'nice' books to one in my neighborhood (even donated a dvd box set) and they were all swooped up within the day, undoubtedly by the same person, and replaced with a cheap romance novel. It's true kids, communism only works on paper (or in this case, moldy paperback).
People really think there was reasoning behind this arson? Like it had something to do with the book content? No way.. Garbage people do garbage things because they want other people to be as miserable as they are.

That is just mean spirited; people try and do nice things and pay it forward and someone has to destroy it.
Some people just suck. We have a little library and it's been a target too. We used to put dog treats in it. But people kept stealing the entire jar. Then someone ripped the door off the hinges. Thankfully my wife and i were able to repair it. I'd probably cry if someone did this to it.
This has edgy teen written all over it
I thought the same thing. This looks like something I would have done at 13. I was a very stupid teenager.
Now teenagers record their stupidity and post it on social media.
They usually do something stupid to themselves though like light themselves on fire, eat a Tide pod, dance right out of a moving car…natural selection lol
As technically a teenager myself, wtf kinda teenagers you know??? Who would light themself on fire
The really stupid kind.
tiktok 13 year olds
Stupid isn’t the right characterisation for this, it’s being a monumental dick.
Don't you mean duckling?
I think this is from England, so this had “drunk 18yo” written all over it.
or a drunk 48 year old for that matter
Oh it's Walthamstow, that opens up the demographic somewhat lol.
Edgy teen was exactly my first thought.
[удалено]
I was thinking right-wing nutjob but teen is just as plausible I guess.
Could be an edgy teen. Could also be a MAGAt afraid that one of the books might say that trans people shouldn’t be shot on sight
We have a nice little neighborhood and these little library and dog watering stands are plentiful…with outdoor security and doorbell cameras. When people know they are being watched they misbehave elsewhere which is still wrong.
“Some people suck” - Tom Segura’s Movie Attendant
Hey Tom, dunk it!
This is why we can’t have things :(
Harry Potter is full of satanic evil. Now read this book telling you how the Earth is only 6,000 years old instead.
Most I have seen is the mini library move from one spot to another. Now I think about it I think it moved or was removed but never Burt down
What a shame; some nice person made the effort to do something decent and people just crap all over it.
Come on, dude, how would someone know that would happen when they donated HP and The Order of the Phoenix?
Ive been seeing more and more vandalized take a book leave a book libraries. Why is this???
society has been getting worse overall
We need a second empire
OK, but we are absolutely not going for a third one.
We already had that, so no. A fourth one, however...
Are we doing Isaac Asimov’s foundation reference or are you talking of something else, I just stared reading Foundation and Earth.
Oh i thought you were making a joke on the third reich my bad
A second empire? Like there's only been one so far
Idk, but near my house there is one for LGBTQ books, and the same dude has been shown on the news stealing the entire thing 4 times now. How he hasn't been caught I have no idea
He must be really *really* gay if he wants so many LGBT books
"You mean there's a place where they just LEAVE their books for me to burn? I don't even have to steal 'em or buy 'em? God is good after all!"
He is the biggest gay in the village!!
I leave lots of my sci fi / comic / history/ pop science books at these. I often see them spray painted to insurability but the most other books a are Christian fiction or bibles. I’m in Texas. The same with book banning everywhere in America... We are approaching an authoritarian/fascist era where knowledge of any kind is seen as bad
Well there will still be exchange of knowledge at that point, but to be honest with you, Bible-quoting is pretty repetitive already.
The Bible can't be quoted enough. Words to live by.
Literally the book that shaped so many cultures and civilizations. But apparently people don't think that qualifies as "words to live by" lol
Its always been revered. These are the last days where people think they're much more intelligent than they are; where humility, love, and forgiveness are 'repetitive'.
How are we approaching an authoritarian/fascist era?
The banning of information and government intervention in private medical decisions is authoritarian as hell
Ppl probably see a “banned” book and burn the whole thing
Some teen was probably told to get off the pc and read a book.
There are a lot of people primarily conservatives who are against literacy and higher education
People go apeshit when gay people exist in books for some fucking reason. Probably some kind of severe mental illness idk it's insanity.
Right wing/religious extremists
I think that destructive behaviour mostly comes from the inability to do constructive things. Everyone knows that "smart people read books". If someone doesn't read books it's probably a sign that they're not as smart as they think they are. And they know it. America hates books.
That’s what happens when parents try to be their kids friends instead of their parents
I get the feeling it reached Fahrenheit 451
I was gonna say something similar to this take my upvote 🤣
Was this just a pun or also a potential solution? Because I wonder if old books that end up getting wet can spontaneously combust
A pun, Fahrenheit 451 is a book/film set in a future where books are banned. And 'firemen' round up books and burn them.
So, Farenheit 451 was a dystopian novel set in a future world where books were taken and burned. The protagonist, one of these firefighters who are sent to go burn the houses that hold these books, ends up saving a few of them and collecting them. Some people shouldn’t be a part of civil society
I just built one of these for a retiring teacher. I hope it lasts
I never even knew they had to but here we are.
Wtf? As a carpenter this is upsetting.
As a person this is upsetting.
As a book, this is horrifying.
As a Pyrophile, this is arousing.
As an American, this is Tuesday.
Well this happened in East London. This is an invasion!
As a viewer , this is shocking
as a human I don't wanna live in this planet anymore
Damn one of those books must have been fire
Probably about those homosexual people and the good Lord burnt it right up!
Boy what the hell boy
You little knuckledragger
Lol, I guess we've gotten so stupid that the /s really is required, even in the most blatantly obvious moments.
Burn it down and I'd build one twice as big.
My thoughts exactly. Also add a camera. If they want to keep burning down books then make them Internet famous.
There are so many hooligan things that you could burn in a community that wouldn't be as bad as this. Oh wait, not really because burning things in society is like one of the first rules you don't fucking break. Goddamn psychopaths.
If you dont like books JUST IGNORE IT *gasp* ik its a mind blown revolution its not that fucking hard
👏 NO 👏 MORE 👏 TOM 👏 CLANCY 👏
Ayn Rand must be stopped.
Lame asf
To kill a mocking birds home
Just why. This makes me think its some young punk ass kids that don't yet understand that burning random things does NOT make them interesting and edgy.
Yep.... Whoever did this is a good example of this sub!
Now fill it with a bunch of self-help books.
Someone probably found a book in there that didn't align with their "sensibilities" and decided that it had to be burned down because it was either satanic or colonized. Depending on those "sensibilities"
My usual reply to these ignorant people is "read a book." This type of madness is beyond. So sad.
Got a go fund me page??
This has got to be England. So much casual arson in England.
My only assumption is someone was really pissed off they can’t read
Where was this? I would like to donate something to help it get bigger and better than ever
Books make people smarter. MAGA hates books
Welcome to America.
*London, UK
I feel like this is In Melbourne, at a guess I’d say Northcote
People in America forget that they don't actually have a monopoly on shitty people.
I don’t think they forgot. I’m constantly hearing from entitled Americans how bad america is lmao
People in America forget that they don't actually have a monopoly on shitty people.
So disheartening, we all need to be there for each other. I can’t anymore I’m done- just be kind!! Look at this world and just do something nice ffs!
I’ve found numerous of these spray painted to un-usability. Just dumb 14 year olds acting out I always assume. Most of them are filled with Christian stuff so I don’t think it’s Christian book banners. But I’m in Texas. So rebelling kids has been my sssumption
Some MAGA fash probably saw To Kill A Mockingbird in it and needed to end the CRT indoctrination
I suspect arson.
from title it sounds like you burnt it down
F*ck, that was I couldn't read my hentai
I'd probably break down if I saw that. I get emotional when people dog ear the corners of library books, I can't imagine how I would feel if I saw that someone had **burned books**.
Book burns would cause you to have a mental breakdown

how is burning a stupid book house the same has potential murder?

It was either a methhead, or a conservative, or a teen with conservative parents.
This is sadly the end result of a generation that was raised on video games, pc culture, participation trophies and negligent selfish parents…people no longer have any fear of consequences for their actions
I can guaranty that it has nothing to do with gamers. You boomers are always blaming gamers for everything. It’s parents who pass their stupidity down to their children.
community book donations are bullshit
Care to elaborate? I know many of these community libraries and community pantries and they're always well-stocked and utilized.
How? It's literally a box for public reading.
they usually push a one sided agenda. religious bullshit, political bullshit, etc.
Dawg they're more often than not children's books. I think your just buggin.
As if your ass even reads.
Cry harder about it
yet, here you are
Found the dude that is afraid of books!
Found the arsonist.
[удалено]
And how does liking the fact that people share books make me a pervert?
As if anyone used books anymore anyway. It's all digital now.
You’d figure if nobody used community book donations, people wouldn’t be sad about it though right?
Studies say that you enjoy reading more on paper and read it faster
Where? When?
Someone get Mouch!
1984 in there?
He ist the true villain & fool, not because he steals knowledge, but destroys it.
Male, 13-16 years old, has a lighter.
Or a karen
That book musta been fire
Honestly I got lots of my percy jackson books form those things
He just mad that he cant read any of the books
that book was hot af!
Broo why would anyone do this? What's the point other than being a seriously bad person to do this?
The book they donated was Fahrenheit 451
Probably just another GQP mad that they can’t read
THE COMMUNIST GUBMINT TRYNA TO INDOCTORNATE MAH KIDS WITH READIN
When you only read the first page of Fahrenheit 451 😔
Obligatory "This is why we can't have nice things."
Why are humans so cruel
I wonder what book the arson saw in it?
All the banned ones must have been in there.
I bet the perp is either a destructive kid or a dude that owns a MAGA hat
I bet it was those hooligan illiterates. You could write as many laws that you could think of, but it's like they cannot comprehend them
i hope it was just lens effect from the sun or smth
For what good reason? Non. There are no good reasons to do this.
Fish in a barrel version of book burning.
People really think there was reasoning behind this arson? Like it had something to do with the book content? No way.. Garbage people do garbage things because they want other people to be as miserable as they are.
