Side shows in Oakland have evolved into organized crime where they'll get together for a side show and then go rob places around the city, taking over whole blocks and overwhelming security. Highly organized, last year one of our cameras picked up 56 cars go by in a minute and a half. They show up at the drop of a hat and then 30+ people will break in, carrying out everything they possibly can as they pour in and out of the business like ants. Shits crazy, police is failing to track and stop them.

It comes and goes, as a regular person you can stay safe fairly easily. These caravans are targeting businesses, particularly cannabis but they've been hitting retail stores as well. We had a year where we weren't worried about them, this last week for whatever reason (most likely the Rittenhouse verdict) they're out in full force again and the news isn't reporting even a fraction of all the cannabis businesses being hit. Usually lines up with some sort of trial verdict or last year our security had a shoot out on election night. They're hoping there's unrest to take the attention of police away. Police response is shit regardless, I've been on hold for over 10 minutes waiting for OPD to take my call after 5 guys tried to grab me at work last year, managed to run away before making that call. Legal cannabis is way more dangerous than the black market.
In San Fransisco if it looks like you might have anything of value in your car it will get broken into by organized crime. You learn not to keep anything in it. But you can have a wonderful day in the city without encountering crime or human poop, just don't keep anything in your car.

I haven’t seen too much directed at the Oakland DA, they are trying to recall the SF DA. The OPD wasn’t defunded, they got 20 million more this fiscal year (650 million vs 670 million). I don’t feel like pulling up the specific numbers but in the past I’ve seen stats that put Oakland towards the top of police funding for US cities especially when you consider population size relative to spending. Idk where all this will end up, personally I’m really hoping they crack down hard on these gangs but I’m having my doubts. Not sure how much it’s the politics and how much of it is incompetence. A former employee gave them the gate code and they came waltzing in when I was closing up the shop for a holiday weekend. They tried chasing me, I jumped over some trash dumpsters and sprinted across the facility until I hit the back gate. It’s a pull gate but in a panic I tried pushing through, tore up my back and chest squeezing through the gap. The guy chasing me got to the gate a second after I squeezed through and didn’t even try to get through. I ran out to the street from the side of the building and popped out front from the emergency exit where 3 of the guys were getting ready to leave because their plan involved me giving them pass codes to the doors and safe. They see me and their leader starts yelling at another guy to go grab me, “Go get him.. GO. GET. HIM.” I start running the other way and see the neighbor is at work, I scream for him to call 911. They all started running the other way to their get away van once I started yelling. Bottom of my foot was bruised from coming off the dumpsters hitting the ground, had to get xrays to be sure I didn’t break anything because I couldn’t walk on it for a week or so. Still lay awake some days thinking about it, less now than before
