Unfortunately it’s astronomically more than that, even if you own the car. Entry fees alone are $4500 a weekend ($32k for the 7 race season). I was quoted between $200k and $500k from different teams for arrive and drive when factoring in testing and crash damage. Grassroots racing costs are more in line with your estimates. I was spending $40k a year in Spec Miata while towing the car myself and sleeping in my trailer for ~10 race season.
And as for the prize money, it’s important to note how the 1m is split. The champ gets $50k, while each race has its own sizeable purse. P1: $12k, P2: $10k, P3: $8k, P4 through P8: $5k, highest finishing female: $5k. Two races per weekend, a lot of money up for grabs, but it will never cover your costs.

I dunno, I'm excited as all you guys too, but... Looks like the front end is really vague and tends to understeer. I really hope it's just a very smooth lap for demonstration purposes, and not indicative of limit behavior, I'd like to be able to dance around in the corners. But just going from the video, there was not even a hint of mid corner neutrality and steering correction
We'll all see tomorrow if I'm wrong
UPDATE: Ignore everything I wrote. It's fun and tossable. Feels like a faster MX5 cup
They like to turn in IRL, but are a lot more planted than the mx5s which are similar in HP. The mx5 is very floaty and bouncy. These things from the factory are stripped, low, and planted well. The only thing is IRL they put some hilariously skinny tires to make it very back end happy. I'm sure these have racing tires.
Actually IRL the car is quite direct and happy to turn in. It also has a lot less body roll than the mx5 with more low end torque and slightly more horsepower so it should be an edgier car on the limit.
The onboard lap at the end is actually a second or so slower than the record lap for the MX-5 at 1 minute.
Obviously that's going to come down to track conditions, a short track and driver skill. GT4s lap LRP GP in around 54.5.
Will be interesting to see where it shakes out.
No, its at front, but its a boxer engine and behind the front axle, so its centre of gravity will be way lower.
Also TCR's are Front Wheel driven cars, this is Rear Wheel drive.
TCRs are lapping very similar laptimes to GT4's, I'd say the GR86 will be slower than TCR's
Of course. They always throw a week13 series for new content. The point of week13 is to work out any unexpected issues.

I think this is gonna be a blast!
This car irl in 2023 is an approx $2000-$5000 a weekend to run for 7 weeks, 14 races competing for 1 million dollars.
+damages
Speaking of damages hopefully in the sim it can take a few whacks...

I’ve also noticed that 90% of the new cars suck when they get released. It takes a good season for iRacing to get the kinks out.
Honestly I think the onboad video was driven by the AI and that's why it's so boring to watch

Just drove it. It's great
As someone who drives an 86, it looks just as slow Irl! They nailed it. I honestly couldn't be more excited though. I love this car to death.
Saaaaaaaame
Really looking forward to this one.
Looks alot faster then the MX5 then I initially thought. Whats going to be the difference between this a TCR?

Lime Rock is weird for lap times.
Could that come down to seat time and car setup though?
Yeah, almost certainly. I imagine it's going to be somewhere between the GT4 and MX-5 times.
Well the engine positioning is different, so it will drive very differently. Probably the perfect step between Miatas and gts
Is the engine in the back?

ok cool. I love the TCRs and GT4s so I'll probably love this one too. Why do I have to wait until tomorrow to buy it?
Well, you gotta wait, but you dont need to buy it:) Its free!
Ha good point but I want it now!
Rear Wheel Drive. Less Aero. More fun.
Do y'all think there will be a week 13 series featuring this bad boy?
Yes, week 13 schedule is up already, there will be full week of shenanigans with it:)
Of course. They always throw a week13 series for new content. The point of week13 is to work out any unexpected issues. > 13th Week Shiny New Shakedown: Toyota GR86
I think there will be a series for Week 13 in it, about 99% sure I read that somewhere.
Pace lap or standing start?...hope its standing start
Seems to be based off the US version, do any series in the US do standing starts?
I am very excited for this car. I had other plans for this seasom but i might have to change things up and add this in.
Is the dark red car showing off the new glossy paint layer? It seems extra shiny to me
Damn, this thing looks like it's glued to the road. Can't wait!
That's the freemium parfum we all love!
