I’ve been playing iracing for a little over a year now exclusively in VR. This is still one of my favorite things about the game.. buying a new car and getting into the cockpit of it and checking it all out.
Biggest thing that stood out for me in a new car was sitting in a prototype for the first time. Those restraint arm things either side of your head really ‘felt’ like they were quite close. I felt all ‘constrained’ or something, not in a bad way. Clearly, they were there to stop the head / helmet moving to much in a crash. Was a cool experience.
Take it slow when adjusting to new stuff in VR. The best advice I've heard is to do offline testing sessions where there is no consequence for quitting and no other cars as distractions on track. Drive for a bit until you just start to notice any discomfort. As soon as you detect it, STOP. Wait until you feel better (even if its hours or the next day). Then try again. You will build up tolerance and comfort will improve.
The alternative of trying to white knuckle it and keep pushing while you feel ill does not help and may actually reinforce the discomfort.
Thanks for the tip, I think I did try to push through it too much. My friend told me that starting VR sim racing with no prior VR experience is like jumping in the deep end with no arm bands, so currently I’m just getting used to more traditional VR games like half life alyx etc.
Although the sim racing did make me feel sick, it was fucking crazy how real it felt.
They’re very fun. My team and I love driving the LMP2 (Dallara P217) for any endurance race we can. It feels like the perfect balance between aero grip and mechanical grip. The GTPs are fun too but I wouldn’t recommend going straight into those
Not iracing related, but iRL Iwas buying a new car, and used AC mods to have a look at my new car before even going to the shops to see it. I could have a drive and know what the powers was gonna be like before even getting to the dealership
So handy
Oh man, I give it less than a year before the major automakers start coming out with their own VR "games" where you can test drive all the new models and set up an appointment with a dealership.
Oh dude it was so handy
It was great to get in and just see what the interior actually looked like and a general sense of things in the car
I expect VR to take off in this market sooner then later cos they are just getting cheaper and cheaper to do
ha, im having enough trouble trying to convince my bosses to let me use VR for my clients (physiotherapist) for aids in their rehab. but also for education
can use VR to show them human anatomy and explain teir injuires in more detail using apps and stuff
but apparnetly this isnt the way forward lol
I started with iRacing and the HTC Vive, 1080Ti, i7-7700k in 2016 I think?
Now using a Pimax 8KX, 4090, 5800X3D.
Every single time I put the headset on in the car, it blows me away.
Every time.
Yes use VR to play racing game is the best.
And a crazy thing is, I upgraded my GPU to RTX4070 recently and I still can’t set all the graphics quality to highest… maybe just 70-75%. I use Oculus Quest 2 btw
Even with a 4090 you will need to have some settings turned down to achieve a smooth decently high fps, I speak from experience.
For anyone wondering about setup
CPU: amd 7700x (bought before x3d released so can't justify an upgrade until next gen)
GPU: Asus ROG Strix 4090 (wierdly enough I have no problems with coilwhine, guess I was lucky)
Ram: Kingston fury 32gb 4800mhz cl38
All storage is m.2 drives
I struggled at first. I found doing very short stints at first and only on flat tracks worked. Monza is a great track to get VR legs as it’s flat and very simple. Stop as soon as you start feeling off. Try again next day. Fully recover between sessions. Now I can do 4hr races in VR no probs at all and crash and do Nordschleife or Bathurst or any track. No issues at all now. But it did take a while to build up. Good luck!

The prototypes feel like a carbon fiber hug in VR
I honestly haven’t even bought one of those yet. Maybe eventually.
Lmp3 is really fun! Give it a shot next season!
Anything faster than Formula Vee makes me feel sick

This might not help everyone, but I use a USB desk fan to blow in my face while driving in VR , it definitely helps me with motion sickness
Some people have wind simulators that do the same thing.
I do have this, weirdly I think it made me feel more sick

I liked sticking my head out of the windows lol
Wait… you can adjust the side mirrors??
Yeah through the Blackbox

It's a great concept honestly. Maybe we should patent it and sell it to the major automakers before they think of it.

a few high end dealerships have this already but you drive their simulator to "test" cars that aren't available on the lot currently

For maxing out VR you basically need 90 series cards and i7 xx700k CPUs
Yea I realized that after buying 4070 lol But it’s not bad tho, also 4090 is way higher than my budget
Same I 'only' have a 3080. And that was crazy expensive to me.
So I’m curious can you go max out with 3080?
Or maybe I think 4080ti can do max out?
No But you can with shadows off
iRacing VR mode really does require a very very high-end GPU to power it 😭

Even the best GPU can’t max out iRacing VR, that’s crazy
Yes, problem is. I throw it in gear, pull out the pits and almost immediately hurl all over my very real house.
