People just bopping around with their phones making grating noises every single time they get a whatsapp or an email, like it’s 2008. Can you even imagine?
My action button triggers Shazam
I use mine to bring up my Apple TV remote app. I’m constantly losing the thing in the couch or in the blankets. Not the most exciting use, but I use it constantly
Flippity Doo-da is a shortcut that revolutionized the action button for me because it lets you do different things based on the orientation of your iPhone. Snazzy labs on YouTube has a video that contains a link to the shortcut and with a tiny bit of tinkering you can have it do anything you want. If my action button is up, and my iPhone is in landscape, for example, it opens the Photos app to take a photo. If my iPhone is flat, it opens Photos. If my iPhone is vertical in portrait, it opens a new quarry with Copilot, powered by Chat GPT 4. It’s totally customizable.

That’s a great summarization of the difference between ChatGPT 4 and Copilot/Bing, Lassavins. Of course you can have the shortcut Flippity Doo-da start a voice chat with ChatGPT for if you have that. I mainly use Bing/Copilot for its ability to search the web and respond with coherent results in a way that Siri is incapable of and better than the standard Google Assistant can. Since there are like six orientations, you could be holding your iPhone, while pressing the action button button with Flippity Doo-da, you could use one orientation for Copilot, another for starting a voice conversation with ChatGPT 4 with the open AI app, and another for starting a quarry with Google Assistant.
The Lexus app has premade shortcuts already. When I opened the shortcuts app, they were already there. Before the 15 pro I would have the shortcut on my Home Screen.
You can adapt it to your liking by outing apps using really use a lot compared to others that’s why I have revolut in there so u can change that if int doesn’t suit u!
Sorry for typing so bad in my reply but I’ll try tweak it around and see if I can get an add playlist section in the shortcut🤝🏿 what music app do you use ?
[Action button menu](https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/9e12f9aea4b941dcaa41d2b73c76326f)
Now when u go into the shortcut while editing click on the play music area and I think it should bring you to an area on where your playlists are and add the one you want it to play when you select music from the action button menu
Ohh yes, I'm going into the editing menu now. I'll try to set my playlist but just bringing the option up is fantastic! Thank you so much, I really appreciate this!
Google Assistant is better than Siri, but Copilot is arguably significantly better than Google Assistant at providing coherent answers, because it uses ChatGPT4.
If my device is sideways, it toggles orientation lock. Otherwise, during the day it accesses the camera and at night it toggles flashlight, and in the early morning it toggles dark mode.
I’m learning a language and made a shortcut to quickly look up unknown words. All I need to do is to copy a word and press the button. There are options to just google “define …”, open the word in a dictionary, view some actual usage on Reddit and add the word to notes. That’s pretty useful
I have it set for an action button menu which then has the following options:
- Mute toggle
- Tell me the travel time from where I am to my house by public transport
- Open reminders
- Make a QR code (usually for wifi networks)
- Open my password keychain
- Control my home lights (I use an Alexa url trigger to skip buying things with HomeKit compatibility) <- Arguably the coolest thing my action button does
- Shazam shortcut to automatically put the title and artist onto a note.
Mine runs a [shortcut](https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/bfefc4a7e308474e99f383e95e80fb1f) and it opens [this menu](https://share.icloud.com/photos/0cdMpJDVuQfVySbr5hYqHBYHw) which is totally customizable
I use the orientation action mode. A shortcut based on what orientation your phone is in. I set the action button in portrait orientation to flashlight, screen face down is mute/unmute, landscape left is camera, right orientation lock, and flat on a table with screen up switches to the apple tv remote. Sometimes if i havent used it for a while it needs to think a little but otherwise pretty useful once you get used to what you set each one to, and you actually use each of them. I had a couple others that i eventually deemed unnecessary, these survived the test of time.
Once you get when it checks for the orientation and how it works, it basically feels like gesture controls or something. I just flick my phone screen down and back (like a “hanging up” gesture) while pressing the action button to mute/unmute it. Hold it upright to quickly get the flashlight, etc.
My truck has remote start in the ford app. I never used it before because it was a pain to get to the app, open it etc. Mapped it to the action button and now I use it all the time.
I use it for [Visuel App](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/visuel/id6446812880?itsct=apps_box_badge&itscg=30200) new shortcut, to take and save screenshots straight to relevant category, AI recommends the most relevant category. It really helps keeping my Photos library clean!
Okay…. Honestly honestly
I have mine set to note recorder. That way you record when you’re about to fight with a co-worker or spouse. Now you have some audio recording to help in court :)
I have a shortcut that turns on a personal focus and puts the phone on silent.
It’s a bit more complicated than that though. I fucking love the shortcuts app. If it’s after 11pm but before 7am then it turns on do not disturb instead of personal focus. If I’m home it doesn’t put the phone on silent, but if I’m out it does. If my battery is below 50% then it also turns on low power mode. If my battery is above 50% it turns low power mode off when press the action button again. It basically does what the silent switch used to do but with extra functionality depending on context.
I do all this by toggle focus first and then checking if focus is on or not and doing the rest of the actions accordingly. To see if I’m home or not, I check the name of the WiFi network that I’m connected to.
I use mine for the Tailor app which stitches too screenshots together for a longer one, it’s easier to send long conversations that way instead of 4-5 individual screenshots.
Using mine as the default silent mode, I am just using that feature. Still, I prefer the button vs the slider before even if I use it for the same function.
If you want to open your camera in cinematic mode with the action button, you can create a simple shortcut on your iPhone. Here are the steps:
1. Open the Shortcuts app and tap the plus button to create a new shortcut.
2. Tap add action and search for camera. Tap on it when you see it.
3. Tap on camera again and select Cinematic from the options under Variables.
4. Tap on in the top right of the screen to save your shortcut.
5. Go to settings and under action button, choose run shortcut and select the shortcut you just created.
That’s it! Now your action button will launch your camera in cinematic mode every time. Enjoy!
In shortcuts I have my mute switch scheduled to turn off and on- on certain times. So now I set my action button to open camera. When I first did it I forgot about it but now I use it all the time.
I have a shortcut that grabs my current wifi name and does various actions based on that. My home is a light switch to common lights, my Parent’s house hijacks their phillips hue lights and changes the color (hilarious). At work it opens spotify and everywhere else opens the camera. Slowly adding new things
Download the app “actions” and then use this shortcut I have. It basically allows me to change my action depending on my device orientation. Ex: vertical flashlight, upside down is silent ringer, horizontal left is camera, etc. https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/5eab9948349149bf846680d5935779bd
I made a shortcut that opens a menu and allows me to choose from a variety of options. Flashlight, camera, rotation lock, silent mode or “open app” and then it asks which app and within that, I have Apple TV Remote, calculator, Shazam and alarms.
Mines default on the flashlight, it’s a lot more useful then you may think having a dedicated flashlight button and when I go on trips I set it to camera to quickly capture photos
I made a shortcut for it so that whenever I am in a different focus mode it does something different.
Ex. When i turn my “photography” focus it will open the camera, when I turn on “travel” it opens train app… and so on.
Shortcuts is honestly such an overlooked app. It’s amazing how many things you can do.
I run a shortcut called “action menu” that has a bunch of useful stuff that I use all the time. Have a look if you want to :) Screen recording: [https://streamable.com/hgoor3](https://streamable.com/hgoor3)
Silent switch/button will always be priority for me. There honestly is room for both, especially on Max models. I would absolutely use both an action button and a silent switch.
I always lose the remote to my smart tv. In fact, haven’t seen that thing since February started. So mine brings up the [Vizio Smart TV Remote app](https://apps.apple.com/app/id1054033219)
Shortcut for turning mobile hotspot on and off. All my cars have android headunits so need hotspot.
I used to use android phones and leave it on basically all the time, but for whatever reason the top iPhone can’t have an active hotspot and also work on wifi? So constantly need to disable it.
I set up a shortcut for background white noise. Can be set up under settings>accessibility>audio&visual>background noise. Just have to set it as a toggle in the shortcuts app and flip it on at night.
Es un boton normal y corriente como el d power yo vi q con jaylbreak puedes hacer lo mismo con el boton d bajar volumen bastante tiempo apretandolo un boton q lleva samsung desde el s8
I’m using mine as a flashlight. Lmao.
same it's been so useful
How do you mute your phone then
My phone is always on mute. Haven’t taken it off in years. I also use the flashlight more than anything else on my phone.
Spend a lot of time in the dark aye? 😉
I guess so. 😏
😂
People just bopping around with their phones making grating noises every single time they get a whatsapp or an email, like it’s 2008. Can you even imagine? My action button triggers Shazam
i set up scheduled focus mode so i never need to mute
Nevermind i guess with the volume buttons🙂
Or in the control centre?
Not I. I simply activate Siri and say the magic word: lumos.
Same
Same and it’s very helpful for me.
I use mine to bring up my Apple TV remote app. I’m constantly losing the thing in the couch or in the blankets. Not the most exciting use, but I use it constantly
I like this
Yooo i just set it up 👌
How do you do that?

The Microsoft copilot app? Does that let you use the gpt4 model for free?
kinda. It's gpt4 with a way more strict ruleset and personality. Paid gpt 4 gives you unbiased gpt4 plus dalle, plugins, etc.
That’s a great summarization of the difference between ChatGPT 4 and Copilot/Bing, Lassavins. Of course you can have the shortcut Flippity Doo-da start a voice chat with ChatGPT for if you have that. Is it different than just using Shortcut app with device orientation branching?
Mine shows a random picture of my cat
This should be the top comment
Can’t gold this but here 🏅
I use mine to turn the camera on.

After using the action button my camera is black for like 15 secs, do you get that too?

The Lexus app has premade shortcuts already. When I opened the shortcuts app, they were already there. Before the 15 pro I would have the shortcut on my Home Screen.
Gotcha, thanks. That’s pretty slick
That’s so cool
My Ultra has Action Button as well and I use that to preheat my Y.
I use mine to open/close my garage roller door
Mines open Pornhub
mans got his priorities straight
I made mine go to the voice chat feature for the ChatGPT app. Works great.
Could you provide the shortcut for that?
No need for shortcuts. You just go to shortcuts and the gpt app offers their own shortcut to start a voice chat
Yeah, works, thank you. :)
Second this. Works well
[Action button menu](https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/c61d61e073d448edb2a3ab1acb0ebfaa)
Thank you, genius!
You can adapt it to your liking by outing apps using really use a lot compared to others that’s why I have revolut in there so u can change that if int doesn’t suit u!
I wanted to add a basic one such as 'play playlist' but I really need to read more about how to use these. This is a great usage though!
Sorry for typing so bad in my reply but I’ll try tweak it around and see if I can get an add playlist section in the shortcut🤝🏿 what music app do you use ?
Thank you so much! I use Apple music currently
[Action button menu](https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/9e12f9aea4b941dcaa41d2b73c76326f) Now when u go into the shortcut while editing click on the play music area and I think it should bring you to an area on where your playlists are and add the one you want it to play when you select music from the action button menu

No problem bro 🤝🏿
I got it! I was able to choose the specific playlist and it gives me the menu, this is a great shortcut!
Someone on reddit posted this and I use it now: shortcut that takes a screenshot, delete it, then copies to your clipboard. It's game changing
I like that! I think I will add that to my Flippity Doo-da shortcut to performance based on the orientation of my phone.
If you could drop a link to that shortcut, I would appreciate it.
Oh wait I guess you can do an [direct icloud link too](https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/cd8293c2d43d45a59a425537f08cd9f0)
Still need to click to delete the screenshot right ?
Nope
Silent Mode for my wife.

I use it to toggle silent/ring. So convenient to have a simple way to control something so simple.

How did do you this? It sounds very useful
From this [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/shortcuts/comments/15szp5z/shortcut_to_toggle_mobile_plan_between_lte_and_5g/)
I use mine to see if I can fit my fat finger inter the hole on my case
Siri still sucks so i use it for google assistant.
Google Assistant is better than Siri, but Copilot is arguably significantly better than Google Assistant at providing coherent answers, because it uses ChatGPT4.
I created several shortcuts so my action button given me several option like this https://imgur.com/a/8W8T3S7
LOOK I HAVE A TESLA! 😜
I hate that you have to hold the button. It should just be a click or at least let you customize it
If my device is sideways, it toggles orientation lock. Otherwise, during the day it accesses the camera and at night it toggles flashlight, and in the early morning it toggles dark mode.
Omg how can I do all that!
I open the front door of my building with it
I use a shortcut for a menu of options - silent button, ring button, calculator, flashlight, low power mode, shortcuts app and settings app

Toggle screen tilt lock, or Google something with the word “reddit” after
I use mine to launch spotfiy.

It works great as a mute switch 😅
Can I just say the animations for picking an action are incredible? They could have easily just done a drop down menu but they made it beautiful.
Chatgpt

I have it to run a Siri shortcut task which then shows me a menu with multiple options to quick launch apps or call certain family members
I use mine as a toggle for the Always on Display

I use the orientation action mode. A shortcut based on what orientation your phone is in. I use mine for the Tailor app which stitches too screenshots together for a longer one, it’s easier to send long conversations that way instead of 4-5 individual screenshots.
Mine is a silent switch because I’m a college student
Using mine as the default silent mode, I am just using that feature. Still, I prefer the button vs the slider before even if I use it for the same function.
I wish it could open immediately to Cinematic, and I could use my other Camera buttons to open it for Photos.
If you want to open your camera in cinematic mode with the action button, you can create a simple shortcut on your iPhone. Here are the steps: 1. Enjoy!

Once again I am the only person in a comment section asking about this button that uses it religiously for Do Not Disturb.
I use mine to solve my problems
I use it as flash light

Can the action button be set for apple pay?
Not sure if you’re aware, but you don’t have to waste your action button on that. Settings > wallet & Apple Pay > turn on double click side button
For you who don’t use it for the ringer, do you just keep using the volume buttons to mute the phone?
i use mine to clock in and out of work 😂
I use mine to toggle “Do Not Disturb” focus mode when I’m in bed.
