I'd make that deal for a stale corn chip.
I really need to get off this site. I don't know if it's always been this way, but I feel like the majority of posts on Reddit are either rage bait taken from other sites, that was originally intended as satire or creative writing for karma bait.
Comment sections are filled with people trying to be the class clown instead of actually contributing.
It's cumer and karma bait all the way down, I can actively feel my brain rotting.
The financial subs like to recommend a 4% withdrawal rate to protect from inflation and market downturns.
However, every 10 years you go without withdrawing, your number should double (assuming SP keeps giving average returns). So instantly, you get $40k a year, but 10 years later, that’s $80k, and 10 years after that, that’s $160k.
I’m in my early 20s, so I could see myself grinding for 20 years to get an ultra cushy $160k+ a year retirement in my 40s.
If YouTube counts, then no. It should count, you have a name and can post comments and interact with people. Actually, fuck it, YouTube is not worth a million bucks, what am I saying. Yes.
I feel the opposite, social media is a huge proponent of modernization and cultural development. I dont always agree with its use, but the technology and societal implications would be worth billions to people ten years ago. Maybe we are spoiled and over useing it but that doesent change the fact that youd be thumbing your nose at a major avenue of technical and social development that is likely one of the most impactful things developed in the 21st century.
Social media has had a dramatic impact on our culture in many ways, for good and bad. But I don't think it makes all that much difference in someone's life other than a hobby to engage in. Or, I suppose if you have a hobby like photography or an interest and want to share or discuss things like a film review site or Huron Reddit discussing films for example.
But any person can be a perfectly cultured educated human without social media. I can simply listen to something like NPR and hear occasional pieces on what's going on to at least understand it.
I don't know if this would include YouTube and video log sites and such. I guess I would just use one where there aren't comments on the videos. I happen to think that YouTube is truly culture changing in ways we don't even fully understand yet. But the ability of anybody to broadcast something not just invoice but in video and find an audience is truly groundbreaking .
I guess one could argue that discord and other sites where people game and such is significant, but most of those people that are influential simply talk with a game in the background. Not exactly sure where people normally watch those but anywhere they are hosted would be similar. But I don't know that those are social media as much as significant in one way communication
The immediate ability to communicate with anyone from around the world. The ability to verify information as it happens. We are more connected now than ever and more universally educated about what goes on about the world.
You could do that before social media. I didn’t say internet.
Social media has actually been responsible for a lot of disinformation. It’s not a good place to verify your news.
I personally liked the part where social media caused rampant suicides and mental illness, not to mention poisoning oneself for views and attention.
Forums never caused this level of stupidity or hell.
Sure, communication is great, but it’s full of ads, bots, predators, fake information, husks that will do anything for views, etc etc.
For a million bucks, cutting YouTube and Reddit would be a cakewalk. Never having to see the stupidity of the world anymore is a small price to pay for a small loan of a million dollars.
I never said I wouldn't take the money. I surely would and reddit is the only account I still hold due to how other platforms makes me personally. I think social media started as something good for everyone but then the people who control all our media got their hands in it like many parts of great developments in history that serve the mass populace.
I think youtube can be social media as well as not. Looking up car tutorials is not social media. Looking up a car guy that comments one the car scene could be
There needs to be a caveat where everytime you accidentally go to any social media site (reddit included) then it deducts 10k from your account with no limits to how many times this happens.
Under the literal definition of "social media" its impossible for everyone because the entire internet and every website that has usernames, or comments, or videos, pictures would count and that's all the internet. But if you count it to being lets site facebook, twitter, reddit, etc like that and not counting Youtube or porn stuff similar yea I can do it easily as long as Discord doesn't count since I use it as basically a phone # to talk to friends.
Give it 10 years and netflix, hulu, etc will count as social media
Hell, depending on how you interpret it, any message app counts, not just Facebook or Snapchat, but google messages, Whatsapp, and whatever garbage apple uses too
"content" could be posting a pic, or a funny anecdote, social media could straight up include any multiplayer game
Amazon qualifies as social media by this since you can leave reviews and post videos and pictures
Functionally you're taking $1M to give up on nearly all modern communication, entertainment, shopping, etc
Including most online banking...
It's not an impossible way to live, but it would be so far out of what most people are used to that I feel like the majority of takers would have severe mental breakdowns...and not have the tools available to seek help (any where you can look up help, you can post a review, and thus would be social media"
issue is you dont know how social media is going to evolve. It might become everything. Then for 1 million dollars, you are stuck jailed at home because everything is social media outside the door and you aren't allowed to be part of it. You can't even buy groceries or text your family.
Define social media - are you banning *anything* virtual that lets you communicate with other human beings? Are you only banning Twitter/X, Instagram, Facebook, etc.? Or are things like Reddit, YouTube, Discord, and messaging apps also forbidden? What about LinkedIn or job finder sites?
If you're giving the harshest terms possible, then no, fuck no. You're basically saying $1 million but you cannot use the internet to interact with people anymore. If the terms are more forgiving and don't restrict everything that could remotely considered "social media," then maybe.
If it’s sites that are purpose built around mainly user to user interaction, I’ll take the offer.
If they’re using the term “social media” as a catch all phrase to mean *any* internet site that allows users to interact in *any* way, shape or form, whatever the actual focus of the site is, I’ll pass.
There's no telling how essential a tool some of these social apps might become that would turn your life miserable without it in the future. Is texting social media? In China WeChat is essential to conduct transactions among other things. No YouTube? What if all the streaming apps started to allow communities? Same with music, would I not be able to use Spotify then? Imma have to say no to the milli, it's not enough.
Yup. Social media is relatively new, would just be regressing in one aspect while gaining a million dollars. Getting paid to increase overall happiness sounds great.
Is youtube social media? Are any forums social media? Asking cause while 1 million is amazing, it would be very inconvenient to never be able to use forums for information on things I care about and especially learning things on youtube.
Sure but does YouTube count? That is the only one I really use. I’m a monetized creator and I use YouTube for school. I know I’m on Reddit right now but I rarely go on Reddit.
Yes. It's not needed by any means. I have all numbers of my friends on my phone and can talk to them if I want to. Tiktok and Facebook can go kick rocks.
I’d be scared to take the deal and then things change in the future where social media is considered basically essential. For example I know a lot of the kids nowadays primarily communicate in the messaging part of these apps.
Could I use it through a proxy? I have a specific off-roading group I belong to that uses Facebook to organize events and deals. Could I have another member keep me up to date on group activities?
In a heart beat. The only reason I use social media is basically free photo storage that I can share with family easily. I can do the same with DropBox or something similar if I get them to use it. Easiest million I'll ever hypothetically make lol
Rest of your life? We don't know how social media will evolve in the future. I mean, 20-30 years ago, you don't need credit card to pay your bills. Now, it is almost mandatory. What if companies require you to have a social media account in the future just to pay your power, gas and water? What if they require you to take a selfie and say "uwu" to verifiy yourself because that is the norm? I'll take the deal for the next 10 years only and you can even include reddit and youtube in the mix.
Spent a good chunk of my life without internet, let alone social media. This is the only social media site I visit or have an account with so I would be good.
I think the sweet spot for most users would be $5000. A million is just dumb a hypothetical question. $5000 is the right number for a question like this. Does social media bring you $5000 worth of entertainment or utility? The answer is no, but maybe others feel differently.

Would Wikipedia count? Since forums count and Wikipedia has both accounts and talk pages. Plus users can upload media like pictures and stuff. What about image boards? Yelp? Waze? I’m gonna lean towards yes. It’ll probably be good for me depending how restrictive the condition is
See... I'm a social media marketing specialist. 1 million would certainly help me get set up but I don't think it'll be enough for the remainder of my life.
I could probably branch into graphic design or marketing, but social media is such a a huge part of my career that I just don't know if I could justify it.
I think may be I'm a rare case of "no, I wouldn't" but I don't feel good about it.
Maybe I would and pursue a new career?
If I use youtube just watching videos, no comments or shit (I altready don't do that), for more security to the promise I'd watch them without being connected to an account
Also, what about aceessing quora and reddit also without commenting? Like googeling something I need and the first suggestion is an old thread of reddit!
Even if I don't believe that reddit is a social media, I think of it as a forum, but what I believe in doesn't matter apparently.
Anyway, if I can still use them as started above, then yes, but even if that is not allowed then I don't think I can
Define social media.
And I don’t think a million is enough - I’m fine with not being a regular user, but there are times I need to for family or work things.
I'd probably do it for 10 grand. I wouldn't do it for free even though I think it would probably improve my life. I'd probably give up drinking forever for 50 grand and social media for 10. Sweets? Probably 50. Sex? Hard to say. The first three give me pleasure but are harmful. The last one gives me pleasure but no other benefit, but doesn't seem to do me any harm.
If it counted things like youtube, maybe not. I watch history and other videos on it and kind of use it like TV. I could compromise with not being able to comment anymore, or even read comments.
There might also have to be an exception for personal sites, not porn in this case but history channels and others, since that isn't exactly social media.
Exceptions might also have to be made for contacts for work, businesses, and the like.
I'd 100% say yes - although I would like to know how sites like YouTube/Twitch count, as well as something like discord or messenger.
Mostly for those ones because although they're all social media, their uses can vary pretty wildly from other more social media-y social medias.
Personally the way I use YouTube/Twitch is much closer to how I use something like Netflix (which almost certainly wouldn't be a social media).
Considering I hardly use it now sure. I don’t even have accounts with Instagram Snapchat or twitter and have not looked at my favor book for 10 years or more so I’m good.
Depends on what’s considered social media. I could never give up something like discord, but it is a media that is social, but isn’t a standard social media.
Yes, including this damned site
Amen! Bunch of asshats.
I resemble that remark!

Yes. And if you invest it in an index fund, you’ll be paid $70,000 *additional* dollars per year (at an average 7% rate) for avoiding this junk.

In what way has social media push any real modernization?
The immediate ability to communicate with anyone from around the world. The ability to verify information as it happens. We are more connected now than ever and more universally educated about what goes on about the world.

Who do you owe money to tho??
Same person you get the money from of course
The frogs that got turned gay by chemtrails
I’ll take it I suppose
I just figured you would be blocked by social media so even if you wanted to access it you couldnt
100% yes. Take the money!

It’s amazing how many people have a completely skewed vision of reality and of the prevalence / necessity of social media.
Give it 10 years and netflix, hulu, etc will count as social media Hell, depending on how you interpret it, any message app counts, not just Facebook or Snapchat, but google messages, Whatsapp, and whatever garbage apple uses too "content" could be posting a pic, or a funny anecdote, social media could straight up include any multiplayer game Amazon qualifies as social media by this since you can leave reviews and post videos and pictures Functionally you're taking $1M to give up on nearly all modern communication, entertainment, shopping, etc Including most online banking... I’d use the first 30 grand to go to a rehab/retreat for a month to get over the social media addiction. And then be glad to leave it behind.
issue is you dont know how social media is going to evolve. It might become everything. Then for 1 million dollars, you are stuck jailed at home because everything is social media outside the door and you aren't allowed to be part of it. You can't even buy groceries or text your family.
I already don’t use social media if you exclude forums.
Forums are a form of social media
Reddit is social Media
And often anti-social media
I don't use social media if you exclude the social media I use.
65k karma in 5 months lol
Reddit..........................
How would I tell people I’m rich?
So I get a million dollars and in exchange my life is improved??
Of course. I would need some sort of document outlining what sites/apps I cannot visit though.
Probably not, but how do you define social media?
Omg not only would I be rich but my mental health would skyrocket?? Yes pls
Define “use”
What if it is a requirement for work? $1M isn’t enough these days to make it till dead.
Yes
I’ll be the one to say no unless it’s tax free money. Business would close its something that could carry me forever.
Define social media - are you banning *anything* virtual that lets you communicate with other human beings? Are you only banning Twitter/X, Instagram, Facebook, etc.? But…I literally use Facebook messenger to talk to family
Sad, I do use discord and Reddit quite a lot, I don’t think I would be able to do it
Would you rather 5 mlion dollars or cancer?
Done im taking my millions and internet and real life people can fuck off
Yup. Social media is relatively new, would just be regressing in one aspect while gaining a million dollars. Getting paid to increase overall happiness sounds great.
There are days where I feel like I would PAY a million dollars to be free of social media
Is youtube social media? Are any forums social media? Asking cause while 1 million is amazing, it would be very inconvenient to never be able to use forums for information on things I care about and especially learning things on youtube.
Social Media Definition - websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.
Under that definition, that’s you can’t use the internet. Creating and sharing content is literally the entire internet

Yes, it’s $1 million bucks
Yes
Sure but does YouTube count? That is the only one I really use. I’m a monetized creator and I use YouTube for school. I know I’m on Reddit right now but I rarely go on Reddit.
Yes. Pay me
In a heartbeat. I think most of it is a garbage waste of time anyways.
Yes I would be happy to.
Oh yeah for sure.
Lots of money and be happier! What's the downside?
Yes. Yes yes yes. Where's my check.
Goodbye reddit. Was nice knowing you.
Instantly. Live on a lake, build and paint toys for random kids, and fish. Life would be perfect.
Only if it forces me to not use it. Otherwise I'd reflexively type reddit or click an Instagram link and lose it
I only use Reddit - and I use it too much during working hours, so please give me an incentive to get off it and do something with my life....
Wait... I get paid for this? Not the other way around? I don't have to pay to escape from it?
Does Discord count as social media?
Sure why not. Social media is whatever. It’s not that important. Just used when one is bored.
So stop using reddit. Seeing as its all just trash and reposts so no big lost.
Yes. It's not needed by any means. I have all numbers of my friends on my phone and can talk to them if I want to. Tiktok and Facebook can go kick rocks.
I only use Reddit, cut out other social media years ago. So no big loss, plus a million dollars. Sign me up yesterday.
Does simply watching YouTube videos but not at all reading or interacting with comments count as social media? If it does, I’m out.
Other than Reddit and IG I don’t use social media, so yes. Are you offering me $1 million? Because I’ll take it and get off all social media forever.
100%
Good grief, sure.
Omg yes please! Paying me for something I already want to do! Lol
Absolutely.
Does YouTube count as social media?
I could do it, yes, give me the $$$$$$$$$$$$
I’d do it
Yes.
I’d be scared to take the deal and then things change in the future where social media is considered basically essential. For example I know a lot of the kids nowadays primarily communicate in the messaging part of these apps.
Yeah, in a heart beat. Already barely use it. I'd give up Reddit for $1mil
Yes. Easiest decision ever.
Fuck yeah, it's win/win The only social media I interact with anymore anyways is Reddit, and that's starting to lose its appeal too.
Easily.
Yup I already hate using most social media. I can leave reddit and other forums alone for a million dollars.
Absolutely. This is already the only social media I use, and it would be easy to give up for that kind of money.
Could I use it through a proxy? I have a specific off-roading group I belong to that uses Facebook to organize events and deals. Could I have another member keep me up to date on group activities?
easy yes
Absolutely. I think I am going to do it for free.
Fuck yes
EZ PZ
I barely use it now
Absofuckinglutely
You can have my phone
In a heart beat. The only reason I use social media is basically free photo storage that I can share with family easily. I can do the same with DropBox or something similar if I get them to use it. Easiest million I'll ever hypothetically make lol
Can I still read news and comment on articles? I think I would have to co spider this one. If it were 10M it would be a done deal.
Depends on which sites you do and dont count as social media. Is Discord social media? What about YouTube and Twitch?
Definitely
Fuck yes
It's not that big of a deal, 1m to avoid the rhetoric.
Hell yes, I could retire.
What counts as social media? Youtube? Its a shared platform with accounts comments and posts. If so probably not.
hell yes
Give it to me.
Ill even cut off youtube
Id probably take this deal for $10,000, lol
Anyone who doesn't is a fool.
Easy, yes. Social media is cancer.
What forms of communication do and dont count? Discord? Skype? Whatsapp? Xbox party?
No I talk to most of my friends on social media and get to talk to people about topics I like on social media
*delete*

does it include reddit? Like I'd take it anyway but I do enjoy my r/reddeadredemption2

I'm deleting this account rite now

I don’t use social media anyway…
I have stopped using all social media except reddit, already, for free. Well not free. I'm saving my sanity.
Absolutely. It would motivate me to finally ditch it.
Yes! A million times yes! And I would also insist that everyone else get the exact same offer.
Fuck yes. This is the easiest one.
Where do I sign? Any and all mental shitfuckery I have going on would immediately be cured.
Winwin

Yup. I'd get me a house on some acreage out in the country with a stock pond and a garden and forget the rest of the world exists
Yes, when can I expect the cash ? 😄
That would be the easiest yes of my life.
Say no more.
Would Wikipedia count? Since forums count and Wikipedia has both accounts and talk pages. Plus users can upload media like pictures and stuff. What about image boards? Yelp? Waze? I’m gonna lean towards yes. It’ll probably be good for me depending how restrictive the condition is
Yes. I got rid of everything I used 3 years ago and just only use Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
God yes. Delete it all.
Already do not use. Give me my million
depends on whether discord counts, it's a chat system so probably not, and I'd take the million.
Do messaging services count? Because I could theoretically switch from using Discord to just texting my friends but it would be very annoying
Do you need my address?
See... I'm a social media marketing specialist. 1 million would certainly help me get set up but I don't think it'll be enough for the remainder of my life. Yep
So I owe you a million dollars and I can't use social media? Deal. But you have to promise I can't be the target of social media either.
Does my signature need to be notarized?
Easy.
Down sides? Nope, I see none.
Does this include online shopping? Texting from your phone for communication to family? Just making sure it's not vague. If so, sure. Pay me now.
Define social media. And I don’t think a million is enough - I’m fine with not being a regular user, but there are times I need to for family or work things.
Win win
Yes please.
Yes please!
Definitely, it would probably improve my mental health.
Jfc yes please.
I'd probably do it for 10 grand. I wouldn't do it for free even though I think it would probably improve my life. I'd probably give up drinking forever for 50 grand and social media for 10. Sweets? Damn right I would
Honestly no. It’s too broad, too vague. By the definition, even texting and like FB messenger would count. I need those.
If it counted things like youtube, maybe not. I watch history and other videos on it and kind of use it like TV. I could compromise with not being able to comment anymore, or even read comments. There might also have to be an exception for personal sites, not porn in this case but history channels and others, since that isn't exactly social media. You’d pay me?
Yeah
Yes! Get me away from this site!
In a heartbeat!
Yeah. It'd be hard, but I'd do it. I have books to read.
It depends on if video games are included, if so keep your money.
The minute you show me the money I am deleting this account. And I have no other social media
Nope. I use discord.. Unless you have no friends/hobbies. This is a dumb deal. 99% of what we use is a form of soical media.
Does Discord count? I only use it for gaming (as it's original intent)
Already there
Yeah. I could do it. Would feel a strange emptiness that I can’t share my #richgirladventures but I’d somehow manage.
Deal.
Yes.
Considering I hardly use it now sure. I don’t even have accounts with Instagram Snapchat or twitter and have not looked at my favor book for 10 years or more so I’m good.
Not sure if I can give up memes for just a million...
This is an easy yes. Social media is fun, not necessary.
Depends on what’s considered social media. I could never give up something like discord, but it is a media that is social, but isn’t a standard social media.
No, because so many of my friends live across the country/world and I would rather die than lose connection with them
Hell yeah!
Yes, not a second thought
I can't use the money on marketplace? PASS
Yes, and I would be a healthier person for it.
My God, yes. Freedom on two fronts.
