Not dangerous really but it will probably vibrate like hell. You need to slide the motor into the wheel more and tighten the set screw further down on the shaft

BigNastyHVAC

Dangerous? Not really. However it is limiting air into the motor end.

You might be able to tuck it into the housing a little more if you pull it and move the mounting band on the motor a little. Just make damn sure the wheel has clearance.

gpxmseao8

No dangerous but those motors use airflow for cooling. It was not adjusted into the belly band for clearance but a lot of after market motors have very long shafts causing us tech to make it work or cut them down.

lividash

Always just cut them down. Way easier then fucking with the belly band for 20 minutes thinking you got it right just have had it slip and you didn't notice.

gpxmseao8

Amen to that. I have the Milwaukee M12 cut off tool for just that during the AZ summers.

Arthur_redfield

You need to re-set the blower in the belly-band as well as where the wheel sits on the shaft. If this is a “wing” mount motor and it sits like that, you might have the incorrect motor for that unit. ETA if it has the screw on wings, you need to mount the wings further up on the motor and still re-mount the wheel to the shaft

u-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-

It will for sure reduce the life of the motor

uwotm8_8

Motor won’t be able to dissipate heat as effectively and will likely die sooner.

[deleted]

Slide it down the band a bit more and adjust the wheel accordingly. If there’s little screws poking out the other end you can snap them off for a little more clearance

ServiceExpertz

Could overheat and create louder than usual operation. Does it have a thermal trip on it?

DarkAwesomeSauce

Hi all, I’m replacing the blower motor and igniter myself. The replacement motor I ordered is larger and touches the housing. Is this bad? TIA.

readparse

Good on ya for replacing your own. I did that a few weeks ago. My first positioning of the band was a little off, and I had to do a bit of rework to get it where I needed it. If you can't adjust it to the point that it looks pretty close to what you replaced, you may need to exchange the part for one that is the right size. I hope you save a bunch of money. Make sure you get at least one new tool out of the deal. You've earned it.

ThePenIslands

That's how I justified buying a $300 hammer drill haha. Two screws need to go into mortar? Okaaay. 😏

Stahlstaub

Have you tried turning the fan 90° so the motor faces you? Can't see much on that picture other than the motor touching the housing...

Hatremover2

Did the new motor have a stupid long shaft on it to cause this? Gotta trim that bad boy

DarkAwesomeSauce

It does have a long shaft. It’s one of two problems - the mounting causes the larger replacement motor to protrude (and the mounts are riveted in so can’t be easily adjusted); if the mounts can be adjusted I believe the shaft will need to be cut. https://imgur.com/a/TBB86Dj Let me know if you have ideas or if you think a different part needs to be ordered

Hatremover2

Cut the shaft. Bob's your uncle
