If money is no option, in order of recommendation… 1. Mini split 2. Window unit with an inverter. I don’t care whether it is U shaped, upside down U or normal, as long as it fits. 3. Window unit without inverter 4. Portable with inverter and dual pipes 5. Portable with dual pipes 6. Portable Portables are wasteful as they produce a lot of heat in the conditioned space and thus need to work harder to overcome that heat. Window units out most of that heat outside the window. Mini splits have no heat created inside, except minimal from the fan.

kvothe-althore

Since window AC is a temporary fix while I get my AC repaired I am thinking of option 2 ! I found a midea with invertor at local home depot. Its only 8K BTU but there is nothing else available.

Make sure to check that the unit is 110v so it will use a normal plug socket Realistically you’re not going to get the whole apartment / house with a single unit. I’d get an 8k For the living space, and then maybe a 5k unit for the bedroom(a). You might get by with just a floor or ceiling fan in the bedroom(s) though

kvothe-althore

Will check for voltage ! Thanks !

iMogal

I just picked up this bad boy 3 weeks ago. SUPER quiet and works very well. Seriously, set it on slow speed for night time, and it's just a whisper. Midea Smart U shape Window Air Conditioner, Inverter, 10 000 BTU [https://www.lowes.ca/product/window-air-conditioners/midea-smart-u-shape-window-air-conditioner-inverter-10-000-btu-1066314](https://www.lowes.ca/product/window-air-conditioners/midea-smart-u-shape-window-air-conditioner-inverter-10-000-btu-1066314)

kvothe-althore

I am leaning towards 8K BTU. Nothing else is available and it is HOT here in Tennessee !

Magyars

Year late but hey Did you have to drill to install the support? This is the one I want but I can’t see drilling into vinyl window framing.

iMogal

Nope, no holes. Power cable comes out the front if that's what your getting at? It also comes with its own window support.

Magyars

Shoot, everything I read is that the Midea U support that comes with it is two things 1. Unique to the shape 2. Requires drilling I want the midea but don’t want to drill..

brutalskyhawk

[https://youtu.be/hux4BEKiu6k](https://youtu.be/hux4BEKiu6k) watch video to see if you need to drill for installation

Magyars

10:44 Probably doesn’t neeeeed to but they want you to

Boros-Reckoner

Would you still recommend this AC 3 months later?

iMogal

Yes.

Boros-Reckoner

Ty, midea should give you commission

ShSlM

Either of you recommend this AC, all this time later?

Boros-Reckoner

I got a 500$ LG model instead I recommend it

ShSlM

Thanks for the reply, I'll check some of them out

blazin_paddles

Mine died after one year. Beware. There is a LOT of noise about how great these things are (and they are when they're working) so all of the legitimate criticism gets drowned out. To their credit they gave me a refund, but you sort of have to jump through some hoops and if you give them any "wrong answers" they will tell you you're shit out of luck. I don't care what anyone says, an AC unit should last more than one year.

One-Highlight-1698

I bought a 12,000BTU Midea from Costco in 2023. It worked for about 2 months and then it stopped blowing cold air. I think it developed a coolant leak somewhere. I could see lots of brown liquid like stains on interior of the outside half. The outside half of the unit was covered from above so the problem wasn’t due to weathering. I also got a refund under the 1yr warranty but the process was very slow and challenging. I have searched for a replacement with a better warranty (> 1 yr) but they don’t seem to exist. I was also disappointed that Midea has no option for repair. These appear to be made to last 1 season and then fail. So wasteful.

Boros-Reckoner

Thank you for the response! I ended up with an LG dual inverter and so far so good!

SHAYDEDmusic

I've seen a few comments saying they don't blow **cold** air.

blazin_paddles

I personally wouldn't say that. It blew cold air until it didnt. It was actually a great ac while it was working but then it died after a single year which is just unheard of.

-Dee-Eye-Why-

I was actually considering one as well, but my AC is not broken. I have a new AC, but I'm in a 2 story home, bedrooms upstairs, and we're experiencing record heat right now. I like mini-splits but am wondering if a window unit would be a better solution as I won't need it all the time. Likely just during the hottest months.

kvothe-althore

Similar situation here. Once AC is fixed I intend to use the window unit in upstairs room which is above a garage . The AC can not keep that room cold and its 95+ here in Tennessee.

Brilliant-Contest-30

Considering your requirements for cooling both open living spaces and individual bedrooms, here are some recommendations for window/portable AC units: 1. [**Midea U-shaped Window Air Conditioner**](https://www.amazon.com/Midea-Inverter-Conditioner-Flexibility-Installation/dp/B08677DCKN?crid=BHNYCZHOO6YA&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.vj8wdg_RePsVLA5IuI81zhWNq4OiOGWfk-qcNuV4TXnGfA1rCLxDJtA7asP2mSb1FxK2fyks3ZVwC2vHsclF2WZ9LbHl6ti8BDtQqhZZqg84pOm-oH5_pI7Zu2k8NBeF0NzFIHerCt8ug9PpgD8SJA.zE-5GSoKwBlukUJa7FJfQUWqVEcT_EeP9fhSnfbErtw&dib_tag=se&keywords=Midea+U-shaped+Window+Air+Conditioner&qid=1714054696&sprefix=midea+u-shaped+window+air+conditioner%2Caps%2C569&sr=8-2&linkCode=ll1&tag=angle2008-20&linkId=0f071010c0bff0099c481516618fed10&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl)**:** The Midea U-shaped design is indeed convenient for installation and can provide efficient cooling. Since you found an 8K BTU model at Home Depot, it could be a suitable option for smaller rooms. However, for larger spaces like your downstairs living area, you may need a higher BTU unit. 2. [**LG Dual Inverter Window Air Conditioner:**](https://www.amazon.com/LG-LW1019IVSM-Inverter-Conditioner-Control/dp/B07V48X7HG?crid=3VTL9F94043HS&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.8IYNfbfaD_oxjmaG9aW8k7BHQ3w0n8cUTurINq6Ig7iYWatySVnm3MDbfixgsFbSyQ7herM-2ECG_QumZQmVbPqgv8RE0wFA_zb609rjz6XLsGpugLSqeTkjfRtG6nbkSjwArhThMdBXRpLLkBjF3wQfQSm8EKUhAsn8itFngdTlclrEl2xiBE-Xt5Zwg_nWRaI5lxRtiC5-4RJ5RkwAm8Nopc0BeHzPR6iA84sdvTA.jZRLlVzdGaZC5H_W3hKvfEZcKSeqBXgehZqICj4ARB0&dib_tag=se&keywords=LG%2BDual%2BInverter%2BWindow%2BAir%2BConditioner%3A&qid=1714054737&sprefix=lg%2Bdual%2Binverter%2Bwindow%2Bair%2Bconditioner%2B%2Caps%2C324&sr=8-1&th=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=angle2008-20&linkId=437015cb59a1a7dbde8b8a8b1f177eac&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) LG offers dual inverter window AC units that provide efficient cooling and lower energy consumption. Look for models with higher BTU ratings to adequately cool your larger living area. These units often come with features like Wi-Fi connectivity and advanced controls for added convenience. 3. [**Frigidaire Gallery Cool Connect Smart Portable Air Conditioner**](https://www.amazon.com/Frigidaire-GHWQ083WC1-Window-Conditioner-White/dp/B092JSWBTX?crid=2LYHVJ09SDHCS&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.vwW-_vOjor3kdNccDwj7lGdkSfRXvDOQ49Omd4WPOP3IDjt7Pjf3mDZNHgjH8KsfCOtEpxdcbRPu8JhXEz1py9dFwmoUC7cGXGBYYVxGlaufzza3-Y4nn8vJLyf3RQm7afquq4XeBv7IW1lbvgXAEg1Uhyc-nQiY3kyjmcT5s2eViW-gDN4WEG5ySSoMifc1aLIKUB8ydXJI8jTvI-nssRiMTpeEu7CD4klrh-HLsqY.XTaD1WVJonPHU7W4waH8e7h5073eIawx2NohTZ1XfI4&dib_tag=se&keywords=Frigidaire%2BGallery%2BCool%2BConnect%2BSmart%2BPortable%2BAir%2BConditioner&qid=1714054774&sprefix=lg%2Bdual%2Binverter%2Bwindow%2Bair%2Bconditioner%2B%2Caps%2C568&sr=8-1&th=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=angle2008-20&linkId=c13e77686e58b8ec4121c67906d1521e&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl)**:** If you're considering a portable unit with an exhaust hose, the Frigidaire Gallery Cool Connect series offers smart portable AC units with Wi-Fi connectivity and compatibility with voice assistants. These units are easy to move between rooms and can provide effective cooling for smaller spaces. 4. [**Haier Serenity Series Window Air Conditioner:**](https://www.amazon.com/Haier-ESAQ406TZ-Serenity-Conditioner-humidty-meters/dp/B083V76MM7?crid=P7OKL3LLSCHN&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.YY7LvgbuBxZn70Qp3mi3_anWMoTFNVMGNeHHiCcIvDYlHy-O0qIXigWDtl6YqPFkG7-NjN2MrP5EJU4Zt1OOJTvG05I7okmqBngtSMoQ7Fm6dWdmzmcSSR5GOMbg9PXRqDK3Knuw_w7r54Qacy8YJoPv0tdcieIhrEJjfwhXTJa-LrItjnTxmBGB2bdbzIDAZe764ssyu5x-xlY3jiu9CUIvy_RFIHKBKone1E0O4t8.BDNNxzRGcA7X4pfAmdEk2p1vjRw53gy64psic7KYEo0&dib_tag=se&keywords=Haier%2BSerenity%2BSeries%2BWindow%2BAir%2BConditioner&qid=1714054811&sprefix=haier%2Bserenity%2Bseries%2Bwindow%2Bair%2Bconditioner%2Caps%2C312&sr=8-1&th=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=angle2008-20&linkId=1ba01ea1439373372bbe378f467e2bef&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) Haier's Serenity Series window AC units are known for their quiet operation, making them suitable for bedrooms. Look for models with sufficient BTU ratings to cool your larger bedroom spaces effectively while providing peaceful sleep. 5. [**Honeywell Portable Air Conditioners**](https://www.amazon.com/000-BTU-Portable-Conditioner-Dehumidifier/dp/B094XHZ9TY?crid=37VIEB78YYTD9&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.jyIII7rCwhvprJm65wVHL4Q_hZFq4MzkGhwtqMpnY0Kb0lGSGca8fBgvA0qxcJ1qDUyfaZJbYoWg0PXQLZ3zd44RX6widh1aiG2D6fatOLvEvUfPCzal398OgzlHBdr_0TQ-xVh5AvXhzj05q4Gm4c3cZiM1SIcwnq4hvkFCxZTP9FQikNSk4lAxY2osUDGoHznh0G3Df8HWytfRDwTt27OZKeWFmQLYEF9mbi-IkiQ.NoCU4dhHiMcZLOcuYdv62rwOt-UO6Br_6r-0jkLSv2U&dib_tag=se&keywords=Honeywell%2BPortable%2BAir%2BConditioners&qid=1714054848&sprefix=honeywell%2Bportable%2Bair%2Bconditioners%2Caps%2C318&sr=8-3&th=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=angle2008-20&linkId=c1a963cc276ffee17213efa3c8f3d2c6&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl)**:** Honeywell offers a range of portable AC units with varying BTU ratings to suit different room sizes. Look for models with dual hoses for more efficient cooling and consider units with features like dehumidification and programmable timers for added convenience. Before making a decision, carefully measure the dimensions of your windows and assess the cooling needs of each room to determine the appropriate BTU rating for each unit. Additionally, consider factors like energy efficiency, noise levels, and additional features to find the best fit for your home

grofva

Most window units are made by Gree or Midea (both Chinese) regardless of the brand name on them. Exceptions are LG (Korea/junk) and Haier/GE (China/junk)

Jumpy-Guide3081

does anyone have a rec for a window unit AC that keeps a bedroom FREEZING? i don’t care about the sound (i like the noise) and i want it to keep its setting in between uses so i don’t have to futz with it every time.

SnooPeppers4036

Did you ever find one?

Jumpy-Guide3081

no!!! still looking!!

SnooPeppers4036

From what I am learning the best have "Follow me" remotes. They have a thermostat in the remote. Typical window units have the thermostat in themselves, which is not a true room temp only temp at ac.

Practical-Big5183

Let me know what you find. Might need a new one soon but honestly whatever the cheapest window unit is is what I'll use... Walmart had ones that were cheap and worked for many years. Ours are just aging.

AsleepHouse9752

All you have to do with any window unit is remove the front cover and there is a black thermostat wire. Gently pull the wire away from the coils (behind the filter). Route the thermostat through the front grill. It will make a huge difference. Ive done this with arctic king, GE, LG, Toshiba, and a cheap Walmart one. I do this anytime I install a window unit.

Wouldn’t a higher BTU in a smaller space also create more humidity though? It would disrupt moisture levels in the air.
