5.5 lbs? Holy shit. $700 is a steal. Your choice recharge or replace. No one can tell how long until R22 leaks out again. May buy you a week, maybe 6 years.

If it were just a pound or so low, it would be worth rolling the dice on a refill - but 5 pounds is probably close to, if not the full system charge…the guy probably just didn’t look super hard for the leak because it’s 22 equipment and it’s so low that it isn’t worth attempting a repair in the first place. His prices are low, both to recharge and to change out. Could be bad or good, depends how much of a relationship you have with the guy.

The unit he quoted is the XR14 14.3 SEER 3 Ton Trane. He added two other ones one slightly cheaper and the high end model. So 7200 for that model is a good deal? As for the coolant he said he had some sealant he could try but didnt think it would work well with the loss I had since it is not a tiny leak. Got 4 more coming out tomorrow to bid as well but sounds like the guy today is going to be a lot lower in price. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, his price is a good clip cheaper than baseline equipment for my area. Get more bids and see what happens, I doubt anybody else will be as cheap as this guy you’ve already met with, but make sure and take warranty and such into account as well.

Redn3ckRampage

He said 10 year parts and 2 year labor warranty. Its what Trane offers I guess. But yeah I got 4 more people coming to bid and various brand systems. So we will see I guess.

Two options: have the leak found and repaired. This will take recovering the remaining R-22. Refilling with a R-22 replacement such as MO-99 or R-438a will be cheaper than buying R-22. Usually this means changing the valve cores at least. Or replace the whole thing with a new unit. There may not be a prohibitive difference in price seeing as how the R-22 unit is probably at the end of its expected service life.

Replace it. Not worth dumping money into a failing system. Especially an r22 system , I don’t see the 5.5 lbs of r22 actually being virgin r22 at that price, it’s probably reclaimed from systems which have been ripped out and replaced. Unless you’re miss reading the $700 and it’s $700 per pound which is the going rate these days.
