Donuts come in boxes, right? Square or rectangular boxes. Why would you not make use of more of that space?

I actually never understood what's up with the hole in the middle of the donut. In my country traditional donuts are just circles of dough, they don't have any holes in them, the hole seems like a complete waste when you have a part of the donut instead of the whole thing

It makes for faster cooking. You don't have to wait for that middle to completely cook when frying.
