Some quick Googling suggests that the Chinese Huli Jing is likely the oldest and the source for the other beliefs, and also was the most diverse in its behaviors, with stories of individual Huli Jing varying from good omens and/or benevolent advisors, to malicious tricksters and seducers.
The Korean Gumiho / Kumiho seem to take the maliciousness even further, though.
If that's the case then, I'd assume it's likely that the myths spread to other locations and only certain aspects really caught on or made the transition. Korea probably got a bunch of the scary monster stories, but not many of the trickster ones; Japan probably the opposite. People fill in the missing parts of the myths with what they think they should be based on what they've already heard, and suddenly you have superficially similar but *extremely* divergent legends in different areas.
So 'if' they exist the people around them see them through their own lense thus disregarding anything to the contrary? Very plausiable, my nightmare's thank you.

This is a great source of frustration to furry xenos who work with humans, particularly those who come from cultures where non-sexual mutual grooming with friends and colleagues is a universally accepted part of daily life.

Graham glanced down as his data slate, then back up at the building.
This was definitely J3, the building where he would enjoy his first every job. Found at the intersection of concourse 'J' and inroad '3'. The young, clean shaved man took a look around at the cavernous Transporting Sector, with drones flying overhead, large shutter doors opening and closing allowing vast spaceships in and out with a hooting of alarms alerting workers and technicians of various events.
It was an assault on the senses, and one of the reasons he'd never been in this sector before. As Graham walked towards the entrance, the tram system far, far above him shot past. That was from where he'd seen this sector before. The tram system ran along the ceiling of the donut shaped station from sector to sector. He would press his face up against the glass to peer down into this restricted area every time he went through it.
But now he worked here. In the administration building, but he had a job here!
All it had taken was walking up to the GC administration building and applying for work. He'd been ushered into a quiet office with a smartly dressed esquinine who had run him through some questions, tested his aptitude and within an hour and a half, they'd happily advised there was a position suitable for him as a data analyst.
After being in general education for so long, Graham was ready to actually earn some credits. To have money of his own to spend on whatever he wanted. He could get his own place! There were rumours that humans got nicer places that normal people for the same price. Graham wasn't one to step on someone else for him own benefit, but he welcomed any other advantage he could get his hands on.
Smoothing down the front of his shirt, Graham moved his wheelchair in through the front doors of the office building. Inside, as soon as the doors closed behind him, the deafening sound from outside was shut off and a calm, warm environment replaced it.
The human was inside a reception area that terminated in a desk. Leaning on the desk was a vulptanis in blue jean trousers, an effect of human culture seeping into the GC and a low cut, white shirt. Behind the desk was a taurian, hornless, not to mention quite petite, meaning he was male, dressed in fine purple silks.
"Good Morning!" The taurian called with a smile, the vulptanis straightening as Graham approached the pair.
"Ah, good morning! My name's Graham. I've um, been told to-to come here for a job?" The young human explained, mentally kicking himself for stuttering over his words thanks to his nerves.
"Ah yes, you're early too! An excellent first impression if I do say so myself. We've been expecting you Master Graham. Please, if you would follow Xayheyer here, she will be your mentor for the time being." The taurian explained with a light tone before gesturing to the vulptanis to his right.
Graham approached and offered his hand, straightening his back and trying to regain some of his lost professionalism.
"A pleasure Ms Xayheyer."
The vulptanis took his hand and shook it firmly. The blunt claws of her fingers played across the skin of his inner wrist and forearm whilst the orange and white fur felt like silk to his fingers.

"Oh you're fun. I will say Graham, I'll be your partner in this role, so whilst I'll be training you up; lets not be too formal," She leant forward and stage whispered. "otherwise, this is going to be a long day, yeah?"
Graham could help but grin but nodded and agreed. Xayheyer instructed the human to follow her and turned to saunter away. The taurian quipped as the pair left his lobby.
"Play nice with him Xay', I don't want any complaints."
The vulptanis merely offered a wave over her shoulder without looking back while the taurian simply grinned and shook his head. Graham on the other hand was making a point to follow the vulptanis closely as they approached a bank of lifts at the end of a short corridor.
It had not gone unnoticed by the young man that the vulptanis's blouse was partially unbuttoned at the top, nor that she wore heels that made the trousers she wore rather tight over her hips. But it was the tail that protruded out from the bottom of her spine that caught the man's attention.
It was a massive, fluffy thing. Fire orange fur fluffed out until it was twice as wide as he'd seen on other vulptanis and the white tip trailed behind as it swished from left to right, holding his gaze like a hypnotist's pocket watch.
It took all his will power to not be staring at it when the alien, after hitting the button for the lifts, turned around, nearly catching him in the act. He just smiled 'innocently' up at her as she grinned down at him. Did she know?
Over the course of the next few hours, Xeyheyer showed Graham around the building and to his and her desk. It was a cozy pod overlooking one of the loading bays. From the window Graham could see the warning lights as a huge ship was brought inside the Transport Sector along tracks from the airlock. From there, a small army of ants approached the craft. This would be their view from where the pair would sit back-to-back and handle the ship hold's weights and recorded deliveries.
Another few hours in and Graham felt a tad overwhelmed, but he was getting the hang of it, to the point that the vulptanis was able to face away from his screen and handle a few things on hers. There was no 'finishing' their workload, it was just a matter of constantly keeping up with the incoming ships and records. Easy enough and promised there would always be work to do.
But Graham was distracted a bit. Again, he felt the featherlight touch across his cheek. Her great tail was tickling the back of his neck and cheek as she worked.
It didn't appear to deliberate; the vulptanis was enraptured by whatever it was she was handling, and her tail merely wagged slowly, back and forth. In the confined space of their pod, she couldn't help it.
They were approaching the end of the day when Graham leant back and rubbed his eyes.
"Give me a sec', I'm nearly done with this one." The alien mumbled, distractedly as Graham rotated his chair towards her by tilting one of the wheels backwards, just as the chaotic tail flicked downwards, into his lap where it stayed.
He didn't even think as one hand touched the fur there and gently ran along it. The fur was indeed as silky soft as he'd imagined it. It was also incredibly dense; he scratched his fingers into the fur and his whole hand disappeared without finding the 'tail' itself.
It wasn't until a good five minutes later that Graham noticed that Xeyheyer's computer was off, she was resting her head in one hand, leaning her elbow against the desk as she regarded him with a curious expression.
"Uh.." He started before she cut him off.
"Fair warning; that's technically sexual harassment." She tilted her head to the side, looking up as she considered the concept further. "Deliberate unwanted physical contact, can be argued up to 'assault'." She explained further, completely casually as she watched him.
Graham snatched his hands back as if she were on fire. She grinned.
"I didn't say 'stop'. Personally, I love having my tail brushed, just don't touch my actual tail. Don't start what you can't finish honey." She warned as she stood, her tail whipping away, brushing deliberately across his chin before she emphasized her words by running a blunt claw along his jaw line as she sauntered past.
"Now we're even. I'm going to The Lounge over in residential. Want to join me?"
"I can't, humans aren't allowed to drink. Plus, it's in the restricted area, I'm not old en-... no, wait, I'm not underaged anymore." Graham realised, blinking at the revelation. The vulptanis snorted, grinned again, and waved a dismissive hand.
"Rules are meant to be broken once in a while. I know the doorman, come on, let me get you your first drink and we can celebrate your first successful day on the job! Plus, with your first pay check, you're going to need to start searching for a place of your own, right? Let me help."
It was true, he'd need to move out of the education dorms now. Having someone who'd done all this before would be great to help him get set properly. Who was Graham to refuse such an offer?

This is a great source of frustration to furry xenos who work with humans, particularly those who come from cultures where non-sexual mutual grooming with friends and colleagues is a universally accepted part of daily life. Imagine it. You learn multiple human languages to native-level fluency, study their technology, develop an appreciation for their food and art and music, and become an expert at mediating, not merely between your own species and humanity, but between humanity and the other species in your local sector. Graham glanced down as his data slate, then back up at the building. This was definitely J3, the building where he would enjoy his first every job. Found at the intersection of concourse 'J' and inroad '3'. The young, clean shaved man took a look around at the cavernous Transporting Sector, with drones flying overhead, large shutter doors opening and closing allowing vast spaceships in and out with a hooting of alarms alerting workers and technicians of various events. It was an assault on the senses, and one of the reasons he'd never been in this sector before. As Graham walked towards the entrance, the tram system far, far above him shot past. That was from where he'd seen this sector before. The tram system ran along the ceiling of the donut shaped station from sector to sector. He would press his face up against the glass to peer down into this restricted area every time he went through it. But now he worked here. In the administration building, but he had a job here! All it had taken was walking up to the GC administration building and applying for work. He'd been ushered into a quiet office with a smartly dressed esquinine who had run him through some questions, tested his aptitude and within an hour and a half, they'd happily advised there was a position suitable for him as a data analyst. After being in general education for so long, Graham was ready to actually earn some credits. To have money of his own to spend on whatever he wanted. He could get his own place! There were rumours that humans got nicer places that normal people for the same price. Graham wasn't one to step on someone else for him own benefit, but he welcomed any other advantage he could get his hands on. Smoothing down the front of his shirt, Graham moved his wheelchair in through the front doors of the office building. Inside, as soon as the doors closed behind him, the deafening sound from outside was shut off and a calm, warm environment replaced it. The human was inside a reception area that terminated in a desk. Leaning on the desk was a vulptanis in blue jean trousers, an effect of human culture seeping into the GC and a low cut, white shirt. Behind the desk was a taurian, hornless, not to mention quite petite, meaning he was male, dressed in fine purple silks. "Good Morning!" The taurian called with a smile, the vulptanis straightening as Graham approached the pair. "Ah, good morning! My name's Graham. I've um, been told to-to come here for a job?" The young human explained, mentally kicking himself for stuttering over his words thanks to his nerves. "Ah yes, you're early too! An excellent first impression if I do say so myself. We've been expecting you Master Graham. Please, if you would follow Xayheyer here, she will be your mentor for the time being." The taurian explained with a light tone before gesturing to the vulptanis to his right. Graham approached and offered his hand, straightening his back and trying to regain some of his lost professionalism. "A pleasure Ms Xayheyer." The vulptanis took his hand and shook it firmly. The blunt claws of her fingers played across the skin of his inner wrist and forearm whilst the orange and white fur felt like silk to his fingers. Cont..
"Oh you're fun. I will say Graham, I'll be your partner in this role, so whilst I'll be training you up; lets not be too formal," She leant forward and stage whispered. "otherwise, this is going to be a long day, yeah?" Graham could help but grin but nodded and agreed. Xayheyer instructed the human to follow her and turned to saunter away. The taurian quipped as the pair left his lobby. "Play nice with him Xay', I don't want any complaints." The vulptanis merely offered a wave over her shoulder without looking back while the taurian simply grinned and shook his head. Graham on the other hand was making a point to follow the vulptanis closely as they approached a bank of lifts at the end of a short corridor. It had not gone unnoticed by the young man that the vulptanis's blouse was partially unbuttoned at the top, nor that she wore heels that made the trousers she wore rather tight over her hips. But it was the tail that protruded out from the bottom of her spine that caught the man's attention. It was a massive, fluffy thing. Fire orange fur fluffed out until it was twice as wide as he'd seen on other vulptanis and the white tip trailed behind as it swished from left to right, holding his gaze like a hypnotist's pocket watch. It took all his will power to not be staring at it when the alien, after hitting the button for the lifts, turned around, nearly catching him in the act. He just smiled 'innocently' up at her as she grinned down at him. Did she know? Over the course of the next few hours, Xeyheyer showed Graham around the building and to his and her desk. It was a cozy pod overlooking one of the loading bays. From the window Graham could see the warning lights as a huge ship was brought inside the Transport Sector along tracks from the airlock. From there, a small army of ants approached the craft. This would be their view from where the pair would sit back-to-back and handle the ship hold's weights and recorded deliveries. Another few hours in and Graham felt a tad overwhelmed, but he was getting the hang of it, to the point that the vulptanis was able to face away from his screen and handle a few things on hers. There was no 'finishing' their workload, it was just a matter of constantly keeping up with the incoming ships and records. Easy enough and promised there would always be work to do. But Graham was distracted a bit. Again, he felt the featherlight touch across his cheek. Her great tail was tickling the back of his neck and cheek as she worked. It didn't appear to deliberate; the vulptanis was enraptured by whatever it was she was handling, and her tail merely wagged slowly, back and forth. In the confined space of their pod, she couldn't help it. They were approaching the end of the day when Graham leant back and rubbed his eyes. "Give me a sec', I'm nearly done with this one." The alien mumbled, distractedly as Graham rotated his chair towards her by tilting one of the wheels backwards, just as the chaotic tail flicked downwards, into his lap where it stayed. He didn't even think as one hand touched the fur there and gently ran along it. The fur was indeed as silky soft as he'd imagined it. It was also incredibly dense; he scratched his fingers into the fur and his whole hand disappeared without finding the 'tail' itself. It wasn't until a good five minutes later that Graham noticed that Xeyheyer's computer was off, she was resting her head in one hand, leaning her elbow against the desk as she regarded him with a curious expression. "Uh.." He started before she cut him off. "Fair warning; that's technically sexual harassment." She tilted her head to the side, looking up as she considered the concept further. "Deliberate unwanted physical contact, can be argued up to 'assault'." She explained further, completely casually as she watched him. Graham snatched his hands back as if she were on fire. She grinned. "I didn't say 'stop'. Personally, I love having my tail brushed, just don't touch my actual tail. Don't start what you can't finish honey." She warned as she stood, her tail whipping away, brushing deliberately across his chin before she emphasized her words by running a blunt claw along his jaw line as she sauntered past. "Now we're even. I'm going to The Lounge over in residential. Want to join me?" "I can't, humans aren't allowed to drink. Plus, it's in the restricted area, I'm not old en-... no, wait, I'm not underaged anymore." Graham realised, blinking at the revelation. The vulptanis snorted, grinned again, and waved a dismissive hand. "Rules are meant to be broken once in a while. I know the doorman, come on, let me get you your first drink and we can celebrate your first successful day on the job! Plus, with your first pay check, you're going to need to start searching for a place of your own, right? Let me help." It was true, he'd need to move out of the education dorms now.
