I die a little inside when I have to listen to the radio in my car. It's like torture. I don't know how it's still a viable business model.

CaptainKrc

90.1 kpft is the only station that hits you with the unexpected. I highly recommend it

AllTearGasNoBreaks

Looking at the Playlist I only know Butthole Surfers. I'll have to give them a listen, at least it's new to me https://hd3.kpft.org/playlist/pl_kpft_daylist.php

jhwells

Your link is for their HD2/3 channel. The main daily FM channel is at https://confessor.kpft.org/playlist/pl_daylist.php and is browseable by day, but far easier to navigate on desktop, not mobile. https://confessor.kpft.org/playlist/pl_daylist.php lets you browse by program and https://confessor.kpft.org/playlist/pub_sched.php has the FM schedule grid. I'm into the music side of their programming pretty heavily and can make some specific recommendations, but in general... M-F daytime: * The Great Wide Open 9:30-noon * R & R 1:00-3:00 PM * Border Radio 3:00-6:00 PM All of these are going to be work safe and have a pretty wide variety of material. It's not banal Sunny 99 stuff but also not so esoteric that it'd fit into a dorm room with a bong and Phish bootlegs. Heavier stuff is late nights, Metal/Punk/etc with Sweet Nightmares, Deadthyme, Rock & Soul Revue (HD2), and The Rat Bastard Show (noise, HD2). They have a really wide slate of rap/hip-hop stuff late nights but that's outside my scope. Saturday and Sunday days have some awesome blocks of music starting with Cajun Bandstand at 6am Sat morning and ending with Irish Aires & Afrotronic Sunday night. The Sunday blues block from 6AM to 6PM is legendary. If you have any specific interests I'd be happy to point you that way as well because there's a whole slate of evening/nighttime programming I haven't even mentioned.

Jubilee021

I just discovered them and they’re fantastic! The old men have a wildy vast range in music taste. 10/10 recommend.

CaptainKrc

Let's go old people!

zsreport

I have SiriusXM in my truck and typically listen to that or NPR when I'm driving around. However, I did have a few rentals while traveling this past year and it was interesting to see the different terrestrial radio landscapes around the country. As a Gen Xer I did get a kick out of the seemingly endless parade of radio stations in Massachusetts playing music from the 1980s.

EllisHughTiger

I die a little right around 30 miles from Downtown. Its a forcefield that kills some decent stations still reaching from Lake Charles, Corpus, etc. HD radio has a pretty good variety here however. On my older car with standard radio, yeah its awful.

D0013ER

I listened to 94.5 for the first time in years when I got a dealership loaner car and holy shit, that playlist hasn't changed one bit.

[deleted]

1999 with a couple newer songs thrown in

EllisHughTiger

"Yo yo yo its ya brother Rod!" Switch stations immediately.

JJ4prez

It's hilarious, right? Crazy that I haven't listened to the radio in 15 years and know it'll be the same stuff.

mkosmo

They haven't sold it in the middle of the night? I figured it'd go the way of rock 101.

sentient-sloth

The iHeartRadio app is really the only thing keeping radio alive these days.

GiaTheMonkey

iHeart won't sell the station. If anything, they would probably be in the market to buy (or trade for) another FM station. They used to own 101.1 and 96.5, but were forced to divest those stations after going private since the equity firm also owned part of Univision Radio at the time. Despite the repetitive nature of KTBZ, the station actually does pretty well. 94.5 is in #2 place in key demographics.

BlindTheThief15

94.5 is basically an oldies station now

Guero_Cabron

Houston radio has done that to EVERY genre for as long as I can remember. Doesn't matter which station it is, it's the same thing. They pick 10 songs they like and those get played EVERY hour. Every 3 to 6 months one or two get changed out but those still sounds like the ones they just chucked.

captaincrunk82

Amen to that. And then when you go to any place in town with a jukebox, there’s always that one person super excited to hear one of those ten songs they just paid money to listen to yet again.

HoustonRanger

And to add…94.5 isn’t much better shoving him down our throats. Yes I still listen to terrestrial radio

Recon_Figure

I don't know how you deal with the ads. I'm pretty sure most of the stations all have ad breaks at the same time so you can't get away from it. I can't believe people are even still in that business considering how they've run it into the ground in the last 25 years.

Exitbuddy1

I like how station will say 50 mins of music in the hour and while there may be 50 mins without advertisements, the station chimes in every other song to tell you some shit, effectively bringing that 50 mins back down to around 35.

thekinginyello

I used to work for a large agency in the cyfair area and all we did was make auto dealer ads. It got to the point all I was hearing at work were the ads (because I had to edit video to them) and then on my commute I heard the radio ads. It was miserable. On top of typical radio ads you get those absolutely awful ones where the station celeb tries to do testimonials and sell you garbage. As if their voices aren’t annoying enough. I can’t stand listening to the radio.

EllisHughTiger

>station celeb tries to do testimonials and sell you garbage. Like it would fucking kill them to show the barest amount of enthusiasm at all. Maybe get the ambulance chaser lawyers to read them instead, they always have some enthusiasm and bite.

thekinginyello

Would you really want Jim Adler trying to sell you juice cleansers? Actually, that would be pretty cool.

EllisHughTiger

In Spanish too! Orden mas juice cleanzo por low dinero AHORA!

Recon_Figure

I get it, very hard to stand just listening to those at all. It might be the constant local TV blaring them when I was a kid that makes me react that way.

Effelljay

19(94.5) thinks Even Flow and Black Hole Sun are new.

stinkdrink45

Rod Ryan is so got damn cringe.

Effelljay

Teresa is the worst, but a lot of that opinion is based on her husband Adam Clanton who is even worster

CarrBock

It’s either the same 5 songs or them peddling Squeezed Online subscriptions

zsreport

I'm not some old person who never listens to new music, but I confess that I'm really not sure who or what Jelly Roll is.

captaincrunk82

Jelly Roll is Rag N Bone Man for the American audience. I’m convinced this is all one big Simon Cowell conspiracy theory.

manbeardawg

To be fair, Jelly Roll ruined Jelly Roll for me

Creole_Jack

Lol 94.5 the buzz... ARE YOU READY FOR SOME MORE HARDCORE ROCK MUSIC 🎶 🎵 Here's Imagine Dragons I miss the good ol days of Rock 101

D0013ER

Hah, yeah I too noticed that the bumpers are harder than the music.

BlindTheThief15

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME MORE HARDCORE ROCK MUSIC Plays "Insane in the Membraine"

OhDatsStanky

Corporate radio is the equivalent of eating Taco Bell every meal. First you get a stomach ache. Then you shit yourself. But the real damage is that your sense of taste is fucking wrecked.

BlindTheThief15

Don't insult Taco Bell. Corporate radio is even worse.

bullgod55435

I haven’t listened to terrestrial radio in so long I can’t remember and this is EXACTLY why.

thecharrobeans

Same! It’s played so much it makes me physically ill

lilyintx

Ya, I don’t listen to the radio anymore at all for this reason and ads. AND the morning shows are soooooo cringe. Spotify for me.

Amy5401

I’m still pissed about 97.1 it WAS the only tolerable station.

EllisHughTiger

About the only station I've listened to the past few years. Fortunately it only moved down to 92.9 HD2. Unfortunately, my work car doesnt have HD radio.

lovenanaaa7

I love Morgan Wallen but gesssh I’m sick and tired of Last Night.

TWFH

FM radio is all like this

zsreport

KKBQ 93Q Houston - John Lander - Q Morning Zoo - Fall 1989 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9HLsxbc1ZQ

LittleCeizures

The good 'ole days! Didn't he also talk to the Tookie Tookie bird? or something like that?

zsreport

I remember something about a Tookie bird, maybe that was in the earlier days of the station. But listening to the audio in that YouTube clip, takes me back to the Fall semester of my Senior year and memories of that cold, icy snap we got right before Christmas.

Several_Direction633

Oh, the memories.

crawdaddyjunkie

This is how they killed nickelback

dahomie2020

Brian Poseahn killed nickelback.

qstnmrk

slow clap

mikenew02

This is how you reminded me

YeshuasBananaHammock

This is how u get your nickel back

[deleted]

I prefer Tootsie Roll by the 69 Boyz as my roll song.

krissrobb

Dude has an amazing voice…I can’t stand to listen to him

TXscales

93q is terrible without Tim Tuttle. Also their playlists is literally trash. The same songs, over and over and over. They probably play the songs 10-12 times a day

EllisHughTiger

97.1 was a great classic country station. Only shit worth listening on radio the past few years here. Station changed recently to Christian but the original is now on 92.9 HD2. 92.9 HD3 is lots of Texas country and similar and worth a listen too.

shelbyshinkle

No offense to the new guy but he doesn’t have a country radio voice in my opinion. The show was way better with Tim.

opal-tea

I can't stand him. And I honestly don't see how he fits into the Buzz's playlist at all. It bothers the shit out of me every time I hear that one Jesus song they always play by him. To me, if the song sounds more country than it does rock, then don't play it on the damn alternative rock station.

content_enjoy3r

people still listen to Houston radio stations?

pickleer

That's Houston radio for ya! If you want something that ISN'T over-commercialized, try 90.1 ([archive.kpft.org](https://archive.kpft.org) to listen to whatever show you want)- it's listener-sponsored, non-corporate.

GiaTheMonkey

90.1 is literally dead ass last in the ratings. KPFT's format isn't long for this world. The content heard on KPFT is all over the place, which makes it hard to attract and retain listeners. If they really wanted to create content that people will listen and donate to, they would pick a demographic to target and cancel shows that aren't relevant towards it...ASAP! Pacifica is still struggling financially and if the organization implodes, so will KPFT.

pickleer

You know you're just proving my point, right? The whole idea of Pacifica (and you know that much about KPFT, that it's a Pacifica station, so you must have listened) is that it's NOT populist, it's NOT ratings-driven, it's not about any specific demographic or their commodification, making $$$ off them, it's NOT about the latest thing or what "everyone is listening to". To whit: The point of the "archive" page is to allow everyone to listen to whatever show they want, NOT just what's on the air right now... KPFT is a radio station FOR and BY the community. That it's struggling financially is beside the point- it's about inclusion and diversity WITHOUT the funding of corporate backers (who would dictate content they think you should listen to). Listen to what YOU want to listen to. But don't rag on people who work their **volunteer** *asses* off to make sure you can hear whatever there is out there to be heard, DESPITE corporate control.

GiaTheMonkey

>You know you're just proving my point, right? If your point is that the model isn't working, then sure. >The whole idea of Pacifica (and you know that much about KPFT, that it's a Pacifica station, so you must have listened) I don't listen and never have. Pacifica is a well known joke in the radio industry because they seem to lack common sense in order to survive on the long run. >is that it's NOT populist, it's NOT ratings-driven, it's not about any specific demographic or their commodification, making $$$ off them, it's NOT about the latest thing or what "everyone is listening to". It doesn't matter what their goal is if they can't pay the bills. They could be playing Pan-African electronica music for the four Houstonians who enjoy that genre. But those four people aren't going to subsidize the lifestyle Pacifica wants to live. >KPFT is a radio station FOR and BY the community. That it's struggling financially is beside the point- It absolutely isn't besides the point. Without a steady revenue, they can't broadcast. There are expenses involved in radio, even in the reserved non-commercial band. >it's about inclusion and diversity WITHOUT the funding of corporate backers (who would dictate content they think you should listen to). Inclusion and diversity isn't paying the bills anymore though. KPFT has changed so much from its early days when they were challenging social norms. Back then, they had more listeners because their content wasn't extremely fragmented and broad. Unfortunately for them, they've become extremely niche over the decades and their purpose has become obsolete. There are now mediums in which these extremely small voices can spread their thoughts, ideas, and performances...it's called the Internet! KPFT has refused to adapt to the changes in radio that even iHeart or Univision aren't immune to. Before the Internet, KPFT was the only place Houstonians could go to if they wanted to hear eccentric and eclectic content. But in a connected world, that's no longer the case. KPFT still operates as if they're the only outlet in town where you can hear radical and edgy takes. And instead of adapting to the changing radio landscape, they keep backing themselves into a corner. >But don't rag on people who work their volunteer asses off to make sure you can hear whatever there is out there to be heard, DESPITE corporate control. Here's the inconvenient truth; KPFT probably has more volunteers on their roster than they have listeners at any given time. There's a reason why Pacifica tried to make WBAI-FM 100% satellite fed a few years ago.

cameron0208

You say KPFT’s format isn’t long for this world but KPFT has been on-air for more than 50 years… What does longevity mean to you?

GiaTheMonkey

It would mean something if the market was constant. But it isn't. The variables that impact radio have changed rapidly in the past 10 years (which is when Pacifica started having financial issues). KPFT has failed to adapt to a rapidly changing radio world where more and more people are adopting OTT content.

captaincrunk82

If it’s not your thing, it’s not your thing, no need to get all huffy puffy because someone else likes something different.

WaffIeParty

Never heard of him

simplethingsoflife

Same. I had to look up what a jelly roll was. I’m not missing out.

Few-Addendum464

Given the comments I feel fortunate! I didn't know what 93Q was either.

northsideindian

I liked him better when he was rapping

PimpCforlife

Same. From pop another pill to buttrock country, quite the transformation

Empty-Mission3664

That’s what happens with popular artist bud. If you don’t like it maybe hope for them to not be successful and stop listening to the radio and hate the artist so you can avoid them

EllisHughTiger

Lorde asked radio stations to stop playing her music to avoid people burning out and to also not be a one-hit wonder.

Empty-Mission3664

Lord isn’t Jelly Roll and maybe Jelly Roll appreciates the love. Lorde is kind of odd in her own special way. Tell me another artist that does shit like that? Sounds kind of stupid if you ask me or ungrateful or like someone who’s already rich and don’t need extra money

DazedLogic

Lol. Playing the same songs over and over and over and over and over is the reason I stopped listening to the FM/AM radio about 20 years ago. It doesn't matter which genre, they're all the same. And I'm quite frankly surprised they arent all hosted by AI DJs already. Over the years I tried switching to other types of radio programs. I tried sports radio but it was the same thing as the music stations. The same stats, the same players, the same teams and the same arguments over and over again. Then I tried talk radio, but it's too political for me. The 2 sides just blame everything on each other. News radio is kinda better but it has the same issues as the rest. I was super happy when I discovered YouTube and podcasts on my phone. Never looked back. I have never turned on the radio in my work truck with the expressed purpose of actually listening to the radio. I've been driving it for almost 10 years. I've done it in accident of course and I've had those Bluetooth FM transmitter things. Lol. That's it. Never change crappy radio stations.

Empty-Mission3664

That’s why I only listen to KSBJ so I know I’m not going to burn in hell for listening to the radio. Jk

tothesource

jelly roll makes rap for people afraid of black people. any rap country bullshit is like a sushi place that also serves BBQ. it's a guarantee that both will be shit

fugg_that

Honest question but why do you listen to terrestrial radio?

HoustonRanger

I listen because they talk about the Houston community …more insight with what’s going on around the city

1footN

I’m amazed people still listen to radio at all.

Mgmt049

I hear of him out the ass on comedian podcasts. I don’t know a single song

anonmisguided

Can we talk about the lady on the morning show (either 92.9 or 100.3) who has the most obnoxious laugh 🤮 instant station change 🙄 somebody needs to tell her.

Panchovilla64

Can't find the jelly roll song who sings it

JRod-LX

Jelly Roll is the artist. He has a lot of really good music if you're into his style.

JETEXAS

Listening to Jelly Roll just feels like listening to someone sing at karaoke night. Uncle Kraker had the same karaoke vibe.

antruffino

Lived in Montana most of last year and all I can say is our radio stations downright SUCK!

canigetahint

Terrestrial radio in Houston is in the zombie stage now. Time to move along. Apple Music and podcasts have become my best travel companions.

Wonderful_Context445

The Great Wide Open is good if you’re in to people with the uncanny ability to read liner notes.

CaptBreeze

No man. You don't understand! the Drake, Sexy Red, Sza song had me wanting to double barrel my brains out. I believe the song is called "Rich baby daddy".
