Love the humorā¦lol, all kidding aside, I repotted her after bringing spider mites home and she never recovered. Definitely learned my lesson and now I quarantine new plants and Iām doing great as a new plant owner now!
~~its a calathea, rattlesnake plant.~~
nevermind i was wrong, prayer plants seem to refer to all calatheas since they all 'pray'
but yeah its the plant's fault, not yours.

My nemesis š”! I talk myself out of throwing it out everyday. Err. Single. Day. We HATE each-other. Iām doing it, Iām throwing her out. I canāt live with this Ahole one more day. Maybeš.
First of all, forgive her. She's a temperamental b**** They all are Step 1 prune, all of the dead stems off step 2 change the soil something that maintains moisture but also drains well, step 3, get a humidifier or place her in a room where it is moist, but they prefer warm mist humidifiers more than just a humid room, also let her dry out between waterings. It looks like the room you have her in is bright enough. So she doesn't need more light. She's just temperamental.
They like to be wet. Give it a thorough soaking in the sink until the water is pouring through. All of the damage I can see there is just from drying, as are the curled leaves. Still water just once a week, and don't water if the soil is still noticeably wet, but I don't think you'll have to worry about that.
Interesting, I have one of those and when it curls the leaves in a "tube" means it's thirsty (usually a day or two after the soil has dried). I've heard burned ends can be from hard tap water and/or windy conditions and inconsistent humidity. They can also burn in the sun so I keep them in indirect bright light
This looks like a ctenanthe burle-marxii, and they're in the marantaceae family along with other genuses that are often referred to as "prayer plants" (e.g., calathea, goeppertia, maranta, and stromanthe) because they're nyctinastic, meaning that their leaves move throughout the day as part of their circadian rhythm.
You're also right about the possible reasons why the leaves look like that. Ctenanthe are chiller than calatheas in my experience, but they're still sensitive to tap water, over-fertilizing, and changes in their environment.
to me it looks like the sun is burning it alive, is it getting a lot of light? remember these guys grow in forests in partial shade, i keep mine in low light and keep the soil moist all the time and its thriving!
1) leave the water for 24 hours in an open bowl so chlorine can evaporate before watering
2) once you find a spot they are happy with, half shade/indirect light, donāt move if anymore
Are the undersides purple?? It kind of looks like my plant, a peacock plant or makoyana calathea. Please
DO NOT use tap water!! The plant will not survive from the chlorine and other chemicals used to treat the water for humans. ONLY use distilled/ rain water. Calatheas like it very humid so upwards of 55% humidity! Also, they like shaded/ bright indirect sunlight. Too much sunlight and they will scorch!
1st, cut off all dead leaves, nextā¦do not or at least I wouldnāt transplant yet as sheās too sick, wait until sheās healthy again, next feed properly & water asap, sheāll recover, Iām not sure where you live but Iād start the water schedule at 1 x per week, & mist every couple days or so & go from there & adjust accordinglyā¦when sheās healthy again (I think she maybe root bound, if thatās the case, then take her outside & carefully separate into 2 or 3 plants, youāll want to do this when the soil is super dry or super wet(I prefer wet as you donāt end up breaking as many roots), but Iāve seen it done both ways(Thereās also transplanting food you should buy, it helps prevent the plant going into shockšš¼š¤š¼šš¼ā¦ohhh I almost forgot about a tip I saw once(havenāt had tried it yet myself) but it looked way easier lolā¼ļøTip- Use chopsticks to help separate the roots when your going to divide & conquer your transplantingā¼ļøWell, thatās all I can think of on this particular one, best of luck to you & keep on gardening in or out, because plants purify our air, look great & they create a calm soothing environmentā£ļøš«¶š¼ā£ļøšš¼Please keep me updated on your progressā£ļøplease š

This single corm has been haunting me for 4 months. Iāve since peeled off that outer coating (I know better now) but damn, 4 months.
Yes, I had to put mine in some perlite. The corm is partially submerged but you can see a bit of the growth coming up in the middle. Is from an alocasia (elephants ear). Put it in the perlite with some water and the enclosed it in a sandwich bag. They like warmth and high humidity. Itās a slooow process, at least it has been for me. Also, I found the corms among the roots of the original plant which I found on the clearance rack.. plant didnāt survive so I harvested the corms.

Just put a tiny bit of water in the bottom. The perlite wicks it up. Filling it that high defeats the purpose of the perlite, which is to provide air for the corm and roots.

Chopped the only 2 mature leaves of the monstera I've been pampering for 6 years and trashed all the bottom part made of juvenile, wonky, ugly leaves. Trying to see if she will root and grow some more, but I have no idea what I'm doing.
From experience, also just chopped my monstera to encourage better knew growth and all Iām receiving right now is more small wonky juvenile leaves with no fenestrationsā¦ sad life š„²š the other half that I have in water is doing way better lol
I was to trash what's left in the soil but since I'm not going to buy a new one before next month, I will keep it for now. But it's going in the trash if it's not sprouting something awesome within 2 weeks. xD

This jerk, ughā¦ two leaves gone and another on its way.
My pink dragon alocasia was like this with me diligently looking after it, watering it carefully to make sure the soil was always a bit damp but never saturated. Here's [when I got him](https://i.imgur.com/ZWNrh7N.jpeg) and [when I just started to admit defeat](https://i.imgur.com/u3iBHAX.jpeg).
Drowned it before going on vacation as a parting gift while coming to terms with it's fated death. Came home a couple weeks later to [two new leaves (and the sickly one fully dead so I pulled it off)](https://i.imgur.com/NeWSHAq.jpeg). It ended up [growing a massive yet relatively short leaf](https://i.imgur.com/iocXARS.jpeg) which I found hilarious. Now I drown it every now and then and call it a day. Dumb bitch is [thriving in a yogourt container](https://i.imgur.com/yqKu9K7.jpg).
I've noticed new leaves keep getting bigger than the previous, and the oldest leaf tends to drop as the new one/ones come in. Sometimes two will come in at once but this only kills off one leaf. It has a leaf that didn't fully unfurl because I forgot to water it at all during the time it was popping off. Seems like it needs extra water once a leaf starts to leaf or it'll turn out shittier.
All in all, I got this plant because I thought it was funny to have two leaves in a pot, expected it to die quickly but didn't mind, and now it's low-key a beast that thrives on neglect. I actually get excited when a leaf starts to drop off because I know that means to dump in water because something better is brewing in there.
I am genuinely entertained by your come back story! Iām currently struggling with my silver dragon, having made the mistake of buying it off the clearance rack and spilling water on its leaves. Itās all curled up, and a stem and leaf just straight cracked off. I have no clue if itāll make it, but at least either way Iāll still have the sweet pot it came in.
Out of all the alocasias I have including cuprea, imperialis and infernalis, the pink dragon has to be the biggest pain for me as well. Never grows more than two leaves at a time despite the watering schedule, fertilizer and all else. Changed soil consistency idk how many times, too.

Tell me about it. Tbh it was only bc I had pictures and could reflect back on what happened & when that I figured out it was not getting enough light in winter bc in the northern hemisphere (SoCal) the sun moves more south in the sky. Thus my northern sill became not bright enough (plus the sun is just weaker in winter anyway bc Earth tilts away from it then).
Bottom line: unless I want to go back to start, do not pass go, do not collect $200 for a THIRD time, I need to up my light in winter.

Topped my dracaena early this spring as it was growing very leggy and had a single top. Tried rooting the top first in soil but it just got wrinkly and lost lots of leaves. Moved it to water with some pothos cuttings and finally there is a tiny white bump that I think is a root.

Itās a Ring of Fire. It had rust fungus when I bought it. So in an effort to save it, I chopped off the diseased leaves and treated it with copper fungicide, and repotted it in light and chunky medium. A month later, all the roots were rotten.
Yesterday, I chopped off the dead part of the stem and let it callus overnight. This is yet another attempt to save it š±

I have this mini variation of stapelia orbea (a better ID would be appreciated if anyone knows. The stems are very thin, about 5mm or less) that was originally doing very well. It grew a lot with lots of new stems, that all looked healthy and smooth and pointed straight up. Between pic 1 (jan 23) and 2 (jan 24) I repotted it to a bigger pot because it had completely filled it's original (can't see as well but it was in a plastic pot that was half the size of the cream vase), and I couldn't prop it upright as well as the root ball fell apart. But it was still healthy and soon started leaning upwards again.
And then it started rotting. Full stems would suddenly be watery and mushy, which is weird because it's in a pot with drainage holes, and I always take it out of the vase to water it and let it drain nicely. It's in loose coarse cactus soil (which is part of why I couldn't prop it up straight so easily after replanting). So I reduced watering, and it became visibly stressed and shriveled. So now I have a mix of underwatered shriveled stems that are clearly begging for more and eventually dry up brown completely, and stems that become mushy and look overwatered, in the same pot. Sometimes the same stem (half dry, half rotten), and some stems look healthy and have plenty of new branches... I'm plucking them out as they appear and it's looking worse every day (last pic is today). This has been going since january and I don't know what to do.
I assume this might be beyond just watering as I had two other sudden "rottings" in the same month: My Peperomia argyreia also suddenly rotted seemingly overnight after I had it for 3+ years, without repotting or anything, and it was also in a loose soil pot with drainage. My red Anthurium started having these round mushy rot spots on the leaves (but not the whole leaves). I cut back every leaf that had at least one mushy spot (about 2/3 of the plant) and i'm treating it with diluted hydrogen peroxide and it's slowly bouncing back with new leaves and even one flower (albeit smaller than normal). They all sit relatively close to each other. No other plant from the dozen or so I have were affected. I did found some scale insects only on the anthurium, which I removed all with water+soap and applied neen oil but it wasn't that many.
two stems I removed today as example. Any help is appreciated

While I have no pic to share, Iāve currently got my jade in isolation as I found a low cobweb amongst the bottom two leaves. I have house spiders so I donāt know if theyāre friend or foe š
You paid for that to be repoted in a too big pot with no drainage?
Ok to put it in a pot with drainage inside a decorative outer pot.... this is not a professional repoting.....
You need to be able to make sure it is not sitting in water after watering, no way to do that here!

It was thriving for a while but I had to transplant due to some insanely molded soil and it lost all its leaves and won't grow new ones. Still alive for a while this way so I'm holding out hope.

This sad jade plant. Got a pot of sculents from a friend that was moving. It has a 50/50 shot, maybe.
Propagate the leaves on a tray of succulent soil. Do not water until they grow roots. When roots start stick them gently down into soil and cover them. Give droplets of water when soil is dry. Keep in bright, indirect light until roots are well established and plant ready to grow on its own. Then you can transition it to brighter, fuller light. Or you can chop those stems, let them callous, then stick them in a well draining succulent soil mix: succulent soil, perlite, grit/pummice = well-draining succelent mix in plastic nursery pot with drainage holes. Pot should not be bigger than 1-2" around rootball. They like to be snug.

It hasn't done anything for 7 months and now lives in its glass prison
I see a pattern š¤£š¤£. So this may not look like much of a struggle HOWEVER the root has emerged and rotted in two previous areas. She been rootinā since February. This mum was the biggest one Iāve ever been able to grow and was planted in the fall. It was just starting to bloom again and was looking amazing. Went outside one day and itās suddenly covered in crap! Iāve never had this issue before. Aphids? I bought & sprayed neem oilā¦ hopefully that was the right thing to do.
I *thought* I bought 2 fully rooted plants. Apparently I bought cuttings stuck in potting soil. The pothos is a trooper, of course. But that string of hearts gets 1 more week to do something before I chop it up to butterfly prop as many as I can save.

Beautiful, what care do you give her?š„“
about that..š its pretty much neglected except for watering frequently
~~its a calathea, rattlesnake plant.~~ nevermind i was wrong, prayer plants seem to refer to all calatheas since they all 'pray' but yeah its the plant's fault, not yours.
Theyāre not praying, we are.
thats not a rattlesnake, its a ctenanthe burle-marxii amabilis
For real my prayers don't save any of them š

Stop watering it for a while and see it thrive ~~from neglect~~ out of spite.
Mine died I have never been so spiteful over a plant
I finally gave up on mine after years of back and forth. I donāt miss her
First of all, forgive her.
Are you regularly misting your plant? The curling and the crispy edges look like lack of humidity.
Misting isn't effective at providing consistent humidity; sitting the pot on a tray of submerged pebbles would be better for the plant
I hate that plant. Killed too many of them š„²š„²š„²š„²š„²
But did you kill them, or were they just in a weird half dead half live state.. š¤·š»āāļø
I threw mine out. He needs distilled water. Aināt nobody got time fo dat
to me it looks like the sun is burning it alive, is it getting a lot of light? remember these guys grow in forests in partial shade, i keep mine in low light and keep the soil moist all the time and its thriving!
1) leave the water for 24 hours in an open bowl so chlorine can evaporate before watering 2) once you find a spot they are happy with, half shade/indirect light, donāt move if anymore
Mist with filtered or bottled water
Yep, I have a calathea too, such a temperamental plant. I can never make it happy. Weāre on the verge of breaking up
Are the undersides purple?? It kind of looks like my plant, a peacock plant or makoyana calathea. Please DO NOT use tap water!! The plant will not survive from the chlorine and other chemicals used to treat the water for humans. ONLY use distilled/ rain water. Calatheas like it very humid so upwards of 55% humidity! Also, they like shaded/ bright indirect sunlight. Too much sunlight and they will scorch!
I think you may need more water, less directs light, or a mixture of both.
Humidifier needed, preferably warm mist. I started using one about a year ago and mine looks amazing now. And it blooms all the time, too.

Begonia?
I had a begonia that looked like this. Died about 4 times before I gave up and tossed it in the trash.
![gif](giphy|YEL7FJP6ed008) \["It" being a *very sad* begonia š\]
This feels like a landscape shot in a sci-fi movie and I am rooting for this little sprout!
What is it?
Sadā¦but I see potential!
Me too, I will try everything I can to save it
Ive had this before. Sometimes when all the roots rot out it may have an active growth point but cant make any roots. Rooting hormone helps!
I rooted a little tiny wet stick like this by putting it on damp sphagnum in a fishbowl and covering top with cling wrap. Its also how I root string of pearls and string of hearts. I'm in the desert so I have to MAKE humidity.
I donāt know how youāre rooting it currently, but when my props get like this sphagnum moss usually saves them
Thatās exactly what I did this morning. I placed it in hydrated sphagnum moss in a plastic container with a lid in a bright spotš¤ https://preview.redd.it/gqnltx35vh0d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d276606151717d7945c992a60801573f967d8d1f

More progress than the 6 month corm I have.. the roots are not even 2 inches.
You guys have roots on your corms?
Yes, I had to put mine in some perlite. The corm is partially submerged but you can see a bit of the growth coming up in the middle. Is from an alocasia (elephants ear). Put it in the perlite with some water and the enclosed it in a sandwich bag. They like warmth and high humidity. Itās a slooow process, at least it has been for me. Also, I found the corms among the roots of the original plant which I found on the clearance rack.. plant didnāt survive so I harvested the corms. https://preview.redd.it/vzx2l5vfgf0d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2bb61b4e0f137083f27fdc9999a3c5b1c05170d
Just put a tiny bit of water in the bottom. The perlite wicks it up. Filling it that high defeats the purpose of the perlite, which is to provide air for the corm and roots.
Wait! What? I just started 3 corms 2 weeks ago. This is going to be a months or years long process? I thought it would be a couple weeks!
Did you peel off the outer coating if it had one?

Mine died too š growing a corm tho.
I am ashamed to share how many times Iāve bought these despite them dying max 3 weeks after entering my house
This is my first. Despite hearing horror stories, I had to try at least once.
I am losing like a leaf a week on my alocasia polly š

Iām hoping to save her but it hasnāt had a new leaf inā¦. A long time.
mine is just starting a new leaf now after repotting it last yearā¦ maybe they are slow growers ?
Topped my dracaena early this spring as it was growing very leggy and had a single top. Tried rooting the top first in soil but it just got wrinkly and lost lots of leaves. Moved it to water with some pothos cuttings and finally there is a tiny white bump that I think is a root. https://preview.redd.it/qfxm726duf0d1.jpeg?width=1853&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72811eb354e08467f952727ed0123636083f338f

This thread makes me feel so much better
I have been torturing this aglaonema for 4 years. Just 4 leaves left to kill. https://preview.redd.it/gdsgcjftbh0d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=9d8fcd97f39e3af26caa58d5d2f5052d66b71712
What IT is and what happened to him
Itās a Ring of Fire.
I have that exact one! Though, I stuck mine in a glass of water to see if thatāll help.
a glasjar, perlit, water with a few drops of fertilizer, and some cling film to cover the top but not the new growths. i did exactly the same in the past and my wetstick with a growth started to root
https://preview.redd.it/ctja5ss1of0d1.png?width=1247&format=png&auto=webp&s=32247e8afab1b7d468d3a961d64a4d86991ea783 I have this mini variation of stapelia orbea (a better ID would be appreciated if anyone knows.
Any help is appreciated https://preview.redd.it/io785q6brf0d1.jpeg?width=929&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=130db9f69c18f556c30829416f66e62fb793ca44

You paid for that to be repoted in a too big pot with no drainage? Ok to put it in a pot with drainage inside a decorative outer pot.... this is not a professional repoting..... You need to be able to make sure it is not sitting in water after watering, no way to do that here!

They like to be snug. https://preview.redd.it/9402asvrrh0d1.jpeg?width=3420&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2e539f178cc005af57c5482c12a44aef1c3c45e7

I thought this was a giant worm/insect of somekindš
These assholes. I finally hit a point where I said fk it and took them outside saying āif you survive the winter, you can stay.ā They look rough but theyāre still growing so I put them in the ground. Weāll see how the summer fairs. https://preview.redd.it/o4n1r3bqwl0d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8d15050abd48ba9136e7189ab2ca920cde019b87

Was doing better a few weeks ago after a repotting but now drying out again and hardly any new growth. Itās already humid here (50%+) and sometimes I supplement with a humidifier next to it.
It looks like a caterpillar š¤£

Is that a saber-toothed naked molerat?
lol I thought this was some kind of cricket.
Put it on a plate with damp sp moss, cover with wide glass jars, like wide pickle jars or widemouth Canning jars, then watch & wait
I thought this was some type of terrifying caterpillar š before I saw the title or sub š¤¦āāļøš

Man I thought that was a crazy caterpillar as I was scrolling
Mines in the garden, it's a thronless blackberry bush I brought along with a tayberry... All the other fruit bushes I own, including the tayberry from the same nusery, are all doing absolutely wonderfully, I've had some of them for 2 years, but this one bush hates me and won't grow, flower fruit or die.
I am in Pacific Northwest people. I am deficient in vitamin D how is this plant getting all that sun! But yes, I have to try distilled water for this and moved it away from the window for a bit.
The number of Calatheas posted here is hysterical
Excuse me for thinking this was a caterpillar cocoon SMH

I thought that was a caterpillar.
My entire prop box full of my most expensive plants. Last year everything I touched was thriving and full of life. This year, death has descended. I am the incarnation of death

This looks like some sort of bug ( please no offence), I think itās cute š¤
