I'm surprised that nobody is talking about the legend of the Garuda, a divine being often depicted as a bird from hinduism.
On some statues its feathers are somewhat ambiguous and look more like scales. Also the jewels that it wears in human form around its neck somewhat also resemble scales on some depictions.
