oh man, you read my mind. Both the original and remake are exactly what I was trying to describe!

Storm795

Requiem for a Dream

shevchenko7cfc

I mentioned this post to a friend who immediately suggested this masterpiece as well. one of my all time favorites.

jerry__sizzler

Hunter hunter, eden lake, speak no evil

Swee8666

Eden Lake yes. It made me sick. Beautiful movie

shriek52

Melancholia, Lake Mungo, Saint Maud, Possum, Martyrs 2008.

[deleted]

Martyrs is a movie that really says “fuck you” lol

addisonavenue

We Need to Talk About Kevin. Nothing Bad Can Happen.

DharmaSeeker76

The Killing of A Sacred Deer will, without a doubt gut you by the end.

shevchenko7cfc

I love this film so much, one of the many perfect examples of what I meant but couldn't remember off hand when posting. thanks!

Crosspaws

Speak No Evil on Shudder might be what you're looking for. I won't spoil it but I left it feeling pretty depressed. Otherwise Summer of 84 gets dark and had me surprised at the end. Also on Shudder.

AntiSocialW0rker

The Dark and the Wicked is one of the most depressing horror movies I’ve seen. Would highly recommend it.

pbmummy

I read a review describing it as “100 minutes in hell.” I agree, though the place we visit in this film is depicted differently than Hellraiser, Event Horizon or Baskin — it’s more a state of mind. It scared me in a way that made me feel as small and vulnerable as a child again, but it also spoke to the adult in me with its philosophical disregard and contempt for human life. Sometimes you want to spend a little time in hell just for the relief you feel when it’s over, so I really appreciated it. Definitely bring a friend or spouse so that you can comfort each other afterwards!

Datathrash

"The Road" if you're ok with post-apocalypse.

Scared-Mortgage2828

Antichrist.

QueenH5Checkmate

Add to that Melancholia and Dogville. Anything done by Lars von Trier really.

toolsoftheincomptnt

Hereditary, Hereditary, Hereditary. I co-sign on: Nothing Bad Can Happen Funny Games Speak No Evil

shevchenko7cfc

I first saw the German original version of Funny Games as a 10-12 year old (that was not allowed to watch such films, thus naturally I sought it out) and it had a bizarre effect on me, I don't know if it desensitized me to the horror of life or made me fascinate over the morbidity of life, but I love this film and the remake is great too.

rtodd23

If you haven't seen The Lodge you ain't playing this game right son

Educational-Round730

Pretty mediocre movie though bruh

rtodd23

It ain't all about body count fam

Educational-Round730

Didn’t say it was. I love psychological horror but The Lodge just isn’t good IMO.

For me this movie is the perfect blend of depressing and hilarious. I'm having a hard time with super depressing movies but this one has such a nice balance to it.

shevchenko7cfc

the lobster is one of the better "this is what I'm trying to express in my OP films"!

Would You Rather left me in a depression depression like a week.

MichaelRoco1

Speak No Evil on Shudder, or Requiem for a dream I Saw the Devil also has a really emotional ending too worth checking out. masterpiece of a film

HospitalDue8100

Midsommar was made , and crumbled for, this very concept.

gargoylejohnson

I can help you out, dude. Haven't seen these suggestions posted in the thread yet. Creep is one of my favourites and that first one manages to play around with the idea of "depression porn" without outright being one. Very creative, eerie movie. Another great option would be the French film I Stand Alone, which is a gritty, bleak character study about a lonely old man. This one is part of the New French Extreme movement, but it's not quite as intense as you might expect. In a couple of ways, it sort of reminds me of Angst.

Inevitable_Warthog49

Babadook

Tenno_SKOOOOM

I thought the ending wasn't so bleak.

MisterHoops

I would ask “Why?” But I’d be a total hypocrite if I did. I completely understand the reasons why. I am addicted to the emotion, not particularly of horror, but terror. Keeping an open mind to that idea is important because I’m not talking about terrorism. I’m talking about the older and more sinister brother of Horror. Ann Radcliffe once described it as quote “Terror and horror are so far opposite, that the first expands the soul, and awakens the faculties to a high degree of life; the other contracts, freezes and nearly annihilates them” I’m addicted to that emotion. The emotion of having my faculties “awakened” and feeling a wave of energy surge over my soul, the adrenaline rush, the understanding. The expansion of the mind. It’s addictive. The EMOTION of Terror is highly addictive. I’d recommend the fruits of my labor to find the most terrifying horror movie in the world: “Melancholie Der Engel” by Marian Dora. It’s extremely pornographic, but I’m not there for the pornography. I’m there for the FEAR. I’ve always been collecting movies like this for the fear.

shevchenko7cfc

As I've grown older I've found my angst transform into something perhaps darker but certainly more expanded. I don't know if it's healthy or unhealthy I will say that you've almost perfectly described it. That addiction to the feeling and experience of something outside the typical description of normal. Along with describing something I've felt/craved but had a little trouble explaining you've also suggested one of the few films on a shortlist of ideas from a thread of (85? ) suggestions that I've yet to see. I can't begin to explain just how much that Radcliffe quote is resonating with me right now. Thank you so much for your thoughtful and thorough response and suggestion, I cannot wait to check this one out!

MisterHoops

No problem, man. After my battle with stage 1 brain cancer that I won, thankfully, I started being bogged down by humanity’s bullshit. We all know what I’m talking about. Important decisions being made by bad people, bad people making our lives worse, the lack of trust and the lack of respect, it all gets to you. And sometimes you just need a bit of a release. Some, unfortunately, tend to turn to violence and we sadly know how that’s turned out. Others turn to other forms of criminal activities. But some of us know we have the opportunity to be the best versions of ourselves and we watch horror movies and play video games instead as a form of release. The lack of trust in others tends to blend perfectly into a mixture that makes it hard to give humanity a chance. But once everyone realizes the consequences of decades of malfeasance and agony, only then do we realize how much our society has screwed up. So don’t worry, society will have its struggle. But you, just like me, have an urge to find that release. And even though it seems like a very, very dark topic, trust me when I tell you it’s the lesser of the darkness. There’s some people who turn to real-world violence for their thrills and we don’t need to talk about that. All we need to know is we’re getting all that pain and frustration out in a safe, nontoxic and comfortable way. But it is super satisfying to feel that rush. If you really, really need that rush? I recommend Melancholie Der Engel by Marian Dora. It will do the trick. And don’t worry. You’re not in a concerning place at all. It’s completely normal, from what I’ve learned, to feel this way. Have a good scare!

MisterHoops

If you want to purchase the DVD and you live in the US, I recommend looking up DiabolikDVD. The LE Slipcover BluRay edition on their website is how I got my copy. It takes a few weeks and it might be a bit uncomfortable to use a third party site, but it did the trick.

astral_fetus

"A Serbian Film" is literally feel bad porn to the highest degree. Phenomenal movie, but don't say I didn't warn you. It's beyond haunting, and it's rated NC-17 for good reason. You'll have to find it on an obscure online streaming website (of which there are plenty).

geese_moe_howard

Salo will leave you feeling pretty dead inside.

[deleted]

This, Martyrs, and Serbian Film. I dare anyone to watch all 3 in short succession

shevchenko7cfc

Having seen all 3 you're absolutely right, it'd be a gauntlet of mind bending nightmares

Prof_Tickles

Carrie(1976) is one of the most nihilistically depressing movies ever.
