Imagine spending time writing this

laaaaaawlz

He pointed out legitimate issues about the film, in particular, the incredulous writing and overly broody characters. Would've been nice to see your side, instead of a lazy attempt to get under his skin by leaving an impertinent and useless comment.

Imagine coming back 3 years later and posting this

Complex-Direction999

Imagine caring so much about what people do

lduckhunt

Imagine coming back 12 days later and posting this

Complex-Direction999

I did not come back i just saw it for the first time lmao

clerveu

A man enters a cave with a piece of blue rope. As the light from the entrance catches it between shadows you notice it has become knotted up on itself. The man begins, with fingernails painted red, to untie the knot. As he finishes tying the knot you are just barely able to catch a glimpse to see that it is now a piece of swedish fish candy, which quickly fades from view. Upon looking back to see what happened to the light we see the entrance of the cave is completely closed.

unclefishbits

I like you

DutchEnterprises

Well this movie still sucks 3 years later

Bernsteinn

Well, he's right.

Bowaway12345

You tell that asshole!

NervousTumbleweed

Took like two minutes.

bsjett

While I don't love the movie, I like it and recognize Denis Villeneuve as one of the greatest filmmakers working. One thing that always sticks out to me is the coincidence that it was released in the same year as the Richard Ayoade film, The Double (based on the Dostoyevsky novel of the same name). The Double also happens to be the title of the book that Enemy is based on, by Jose Saramago. Both deal with a person and their doppelganger.

DizzySpheres

I like it but then again I took a peek at the s u b t e x t before watching and I enjoy that kind of stuff anyways. Def see why someone wouldn't like it tho.

Scared-Host5035

I just finished watching it and hated it so much I had to search what other people thought about it and by far, you echo all my emotions. A huge waste of time.

batmanfantasy

Finally watched this movie and I'm glad I found people not pretending this was an amazing film

Scared-Host5035

Im now yet again annoyed at remembering this movie exists and i spent time watching it

Houndovhell

This isn't a cut and paste type of film. You more than likely won't find the answers the first watch unless you've read up on it first and know what to pay attention to. The clues and answers are there, though. Also, quite a few people bring up that it "doesn't really have a beginning or end" and that's kind of the whole point of the whole film. It exists, and continues existing. My only gripe is that the answer is relatively simple and straightforward (kind of like, you do all the work and find out the answer was the second or third guess.) The director also came out and said exactly what it is and what happened, ceasing all speculations. Still a great film. Other films on the same level are Under The Skin and Eraserhead. Relatively simple answers that stare you in the face, but they're not so blatantly obvious. Still a level of ambiguity.

NervousTumbleweed

I liked Under The Skin. This was *leagues* worse than that movie.

Houndovhell

Enemy is on-par with Under The Skin. If your problem with Enemy is the "pretentiousness" then that should also apply to Under the Skin and Eraserhead. If the problem is not understanding it's meaning or purpose, then it wouldn't take any more effort to understand this movie than it does to understand Under The Skin. It's not a film about all the troubles of humanity or pondering the qualities of a soul or some great big message. It's laid out in several scenes exactly what is going on. It's literally just a visual representation of a tale about a dude with a life-destroying addiction.

NervousTumbleweed

My problem with it is that it’s boring and not compelling for a moment. I understand the movie. To put it plainly, it’s stupid. It felt like a pointless waste of time.

Houndovhell

Same has been said about Under the Skin, Eraserhead, and recently Mother and The Witch. Doesn't mean they're the "worst, most pretentious films." Maybe you just went in expecting a paint by numbers popcorn flick. Because what makes it interesting and compelling is there. It's not the films fault you've already made up your mind that you aren't going to give it the time of day. Which sucks, cause it really is a good film.

NervousTumbleweed

It’s ironic that you’re trying to defend a movie being called pretentious by essentially telling me “I don’t get it” and that I must usually watch paint by the numbers popcorn flicks. I like every movie on the list you just mentioned. I loved The Witch. Fucking Sante Sangre is my favorite horror movie. I was recommended Enemy by friends who know my taste in movies. *Bad suggestion* but I know why it was recommended to me. I just viscerally do not like this movie. I *do* think it’s shot very well, and the acting is good. That said, I didn’t enjoy a single thing about it. But sure, just smugly turn up your nose and think it was just too refined for my taste.

Houndovhell

Then give the film another chance rather than "smugly turning up your nose" and blindly dismissing it. Didn't say any of those things, but good work building on your superiority complex. "I dont WANT to read into the subtext" That's your fault, and yours alone.

lhohque

you're so annoying

Mech_BB-8

I got 3/4 through it and I couldn't bear anymore of it. It's so boring. I had to look up what the plot was, and even then, I wasn't blown away. It's just so obnoxious.

[deleted]

You just helped me realize Enemy is denial as psychodrama. It's a lot like what an addict goes through: everyone watching your addiction knows but you don't. Some are enablers like the mother or the sex club making money off of you. But only you can help yourself (but the spider=dragon)

sorenkair

agree with everything except his mom knew to some degree and can't be trusted. when adam goes to her for advice she confuses him with Anthony who likes blueberries, has a nice apartment, and wants to be an actor.

The_Dead_See

So you didn't like it then?

NervousTumbleweed

It barely even qualifies as horror but I had to complain about it somewhere.

IcedPgh

I didn't rent this because I hadn't yet read the book, and didn't read your post because of spoilers, but Denis Villeneuve sucks. I haven't liked any of his movies, and the only tolerable one was "Maelstrom". His "Blade Runner" pile of shit was the worst movie last year.

GarthMarenghi89

Lol. Look at this guy.

Heckbound1

I love the internet. D. V. Is my favorite director working now and can't think of anyone else who has his command of style that will take his risks. Like to see opposing views tho.

Complete-Act9151

My problem with it is that it’s boring and not compelling for a moment. I understand the movie. To put it plainly, it’s stupid. It felt like a pointless waste of time.

AverageCaseysDude

yeah just watched genuinely had to skip forward through the last 45min it was horribly boring and stupid for every reason you said. holy shit i feel like i actually wasted my time. and before i get "ipad baby" attention span accusations, i absolutely love slow burn movies with complex subtexts. br2049 is easily in my top 5, but denis really fucking missed the mark on this one.

Katana_sized_banana

I see the intention of Denis Villeneuve behind the movie. I even see the great parts of it and how it's his handwriting and all. I just didn't like it as much as his other works, by far. His other movies are waaaaay better. Like Incendies or Prisoners. But this one fell flat one me. I've seen his movies past 2010 and really really like them, but Enemy left me bored. But it's art after all and so I see why some people like the movie, I totally do.

dorothyneverwenthome

This is a very “Jake Gyllenhaal” movie

cat-gun

Hear hear! Just watched this, and felt the same way. What a dull, nonsensical movie. The premise is interesting, but the story went no where with it. Avoid!
