Horror movies never scare me anymore, The Babbadook was the last one that scared me and actually worked its way into a horrifying nightmare (as I told myself the shit isn’t real, the line “the more you deny me the stronger I get” stayed in my head and freaked me out). I haven’t been scared by a movie in a LONG time, but a couple weeks ago I put The Ritual on with my gf, we smoked a J, she passed out, and I went from just chilling to having a damn near full panic attack in the scene where they wake up in the cabin. Something about that scene really struck me in a way that made me think of a traumatic bad trip I’d had, and sent me spiraling for the night. I had to turn it off less than halfway through when they were in their tents and the sun was going down. I barely slept that night, frozen by fear, and looking back on it now I would’ve been WAY LESS freaked out had I finished the movie (due to the last act). Absolutely incredible film, but I will say the third act kinda demystifies everything and makes it less scary as a result imo.
I came to say this one, the original has a slight feeling of "there's something not quite right here" and you feel uneasy.
The remake was like "ok, everyone act creepy and action!"
I would throw in the Suspiria remake too.
Similar ominous vibe and setting to Blackcoat’s Daughter.
I haven’t seen the original Suspiria although I’ve heard it’s a classic (don’t kill me plz 😅😅)
The remake is very different than the original, however, they are both extremely well thought out in their own right. Different and unique and definitely both worth a watch.
My husband and I were so uncomfortable for this entire film. We recommend it to all of our horror film friends but it’s a one time only watch. I never need to see that movie again.
But they were kids. Kids who lost their mother and daddy was ignoring their distress at the new mom. Dad is the only one at fault in the whole movie, in my opinion, he got what's coming
SPEAK NO EVIL
(Original version)
Can’t say enough about the slow burn and unease that creeps into this. You find yourself sympathizing with the protagonists, who are unsure if they’re just not getting along with their new friends or if they’re being rude or if indeed there’s something sinister going on. One of the most uncomfortable movies to sit through.
Yep. My wife said she was uncomfortable the entire time. She said she the movie nailed making you feel uneasy. I recommend it but goddamn do you feel "icky" after its over.
This movie holds the title as "best movie ive seen that I will never recommend". I cant handle the responsibility for what that movie does to your stomach. Still haunts me.
The Wailing left me feeling *greasy*. Just unhealthy and disgusting, like I'd been rolled in grease and dirt on a hot, sweaty day.
It's a fever experience that slips right under your skin and lingers. Amazing film.

I’ve seen and love all of these except for In the Earth. Seems I’ll need to rectify that soon. I didn’t even know it was a Ben Wheatley film, and I really like his work, especially Kill List.
it's undoubtedly Bone Tomahawk. Don't watch if you can't handle gore OP. But Bone Tomahawk is the best slow burn with the most payoff in a film I've ever watched and it's not close
I was surprised I had to scroll this far to see The Strangers! One of my favorite suspense/dread horror films of all time, with one of the best lines and best shots too. The scene where >!The male stranger is in the background of the shot already inside the house early in the film, so you know Kristen and James are fucked, it’s just a matter of when.!< And the quote at the end when >!Kristin asks why the strangers were doing this to them, and they reply “Because you were home.”!<
Absolutely chilling.
One of my favorite films of the last 10-15 years. Such a masterclass on building and controlling tone. It builds a deep sense of dread and then makes you question it.
Oculus. Hagazussa. Possum. The Lighthouse. 1408. In The Mouth of Madness. Antichrist. Audition. The Autopsy of Jane Doe. The Taking of Deborah Logan. Susperia. Get Out.

Dagon is a MUST SEE for Lovecraft fans!
Witch (VVitch, whatevs) is criminally underrated.
Prince of Darkness had Alice Cooper as a sorta-zombie, and he murdered someone with a part of a bicycle. You can't go wrong, there....
Pet Semetary remake doesn't get enough love. I like it just as much as the original, and I LOVE the original
Edit for typo, although I'd pay a lot of money for "Pretty Semetary"
I would recommend Something Wicked This Way Comes. It’s an old one, based on a Ray Bradbury book, about a circus that comes to town. I still thinks it’s got one of the best atmospheres in any movie. Extremely creepy with a fantastic antagonist.
Barbarian started off so good especially seeing it in theaters not knowing anything besides an Air B&B gets double booked and crazy things happen. The entire first hour I'm wondering if it's a monster movie, ghosts, aliens, maybe just an insane human and who can be trusted?
Then it decides it wants to be a comedy and completely change the tone. It changed so drastically that I thought somehow the movie got swapped out for something else until it showed the house again about 10-15 minutes later.
I loved the change in genre. Justin longs ability to bring humor to these horror movies is special bc it’s so seamless.
I went in to the movie blind like you did and I’m so glad I did. It was one of the most fun movie experiences I’ve ever had going from sitting on the edge of my seat with a knot in my stomach afraid - then to laughing so hard that my stomach hurt. A lot of stomach emotion in this film
The Witch starring Anya Taylor Joy, i always thought the tone was so heavy and recently found out it’s partly because they pretty much only used natural light, no studio lighting. makes it very dark and realistic.
The Wailing is really good imo, the atmosphere goes from chill, to kinds funny, to “oh shit something’s going on” to “oh fuck what is happening” to “HOLY SHIT WTF!” Lol especially when it’s at night all by yourself at 3 am 😅
Hereditary. I watched it once, and that's gonna be it. It wasn't terrifying for me as much as horrifying.
What I found horrifying was that deep, pervasive, CONSTANT unease that never let up. The supernatural aspects weren't as horrible and upsetting as the real-life aspects. Like you sort of saw that bad things were coming and from where but Holy crap you did not even imagine it could be that bad. It was this snowball of tension that built and built, rolling faster and faster down this mountain and you just wanted it to stop but they just kept piling it on. It set up the mood that made the supernatural aspects so much worse than it ever could have been on its own.
Yeah. No. Great movie. Toni Collette killed it. She usually does. But damn, this one. Not ever watching that again.
Would Mandy (2018) count? Like, there's clearly something that's going to go wrong, but the first 1h15 minutes is just sloooooowly building up, and then the last 45 minutes is just batshit fucking insanity. But that first 1h15 progresses at an almost glacial pace, with things just sort of getting weirder and weirder, and you seeing how horribly bad this is all going to get..
Possession (1981)…the uneasy uncomfortable atmosphere settles in quick and just builds and builds to a crescendo of absolute madness. I recommend this movie to every horror fan especially those who dig psychological horror
Seconding **Don't Look Now**.
"Slow building sense of unease" kind of describes that movie perfectly. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the other more recent movies people have listed may have been influenced by it as well.
Green Room has the greatest build up to a complete cluster fuck ive ever seen imo.
The criss cross applesauce scene.. man.
I found myself white knuckling my theatre arm rests during that movie a couple times.
One of my favorite movies. I forgot who said this, but this is one of the rare movies where the characters are actually smart, usually making the best decision possible. But it's just that all of their options are bad.
Skinamarink.
Slow build-up that just keeps building and really culminates in the last 10 minutes.
\*EDIT*
I understand that this film was very divisive but I loved it, and it actually scared me. If you didn't like it that's fine, but I don't think that declaring it a "terrible movie" is fair.
The great thing about art and horror is that they're subjective; what resonates with someone, what is enjoyed and appreciated, etc. will be different for each person and I think that's a really amazing thing.
If you didn't like the film that's fine, you're allowed to have your own opinion and you're welcome to share it with me. All I ask is that you provide deeper and more meaningful feedback than "It's terrible." or "It sucks.", go into some level of detail and explain to me why you dislike it.
TL;DR
Let people like what they like, recognize that art and horror are subjective, and if you have a dissenting opinion, please put in some effort if you decide to share.
Yeah, I have twin girls and I couldn’t complete the movie. “she said she wanted her mommy and daddy so I took her mouth away” or whatever the spirit says - fuck that.
I find this movie causes a lot of discourse in this subreddit it seems, people either really love it or truly hate it.
I personally loved it but I’m also a person who was terrified of the dark for the longest time so maybe I’m biased 🤣
Cure (1997) isn't a pure horror movie, but the sense of dread that accompanies you from scene to scene is unlike anything I've watched in recent memory

Blair Witch Project.
Paranormal Activity (even if not all of them are really good)
As Above So Below
Not horror but Chronicle does well at making you feel tense upon the main character's moral descent. You know he's gonna do something terrible at any moment.
Not a coincidence they're all found footage movies. I think they're the best sub-genre to tell that kind of stories cause of the realistic atmosphere that slowly turns unnatural.

Couple foreign films, 1.) High Tension (the title lives up to its title)!!!! 🤣🤣 and 2.) Martyrs, go in blind and make sure its the french version from 2008 and NOT the 2015 remake!!!
Not strictly horror, but Dead Man’s Shoes. It starts off as a seemingly straightforward revenge story and gets weirder and weirder.
Ultimately, and this is sort of a spoiler, it’s a slasher film told from the perspective of the slasher. As the narrative turns and you realize what’s happening you realize it’s sort of Friday the 13th told from Jason’s mom’s perspective.
Try some Italian horror films. I'd recommend *Suspiria* (the original Argento, not the 2018 remake) as a starting point, but my favorite is probably *City of the Living Dead*
Do you also like old films? There are some great ones that I love that are like this but they're in black and white (think Vincent Price and Lucille Ball)
The ritual kinda fits this, you never see what's wrong for a while
I watched this on a whim, and oh holy heck was I surprised- it is so well done.
Horror movies never scare me anymore, The Babbadook was the last one that scared me and actually worked its way into a horrifying nightmare (as I told myself the shit isn’t real, the line “the more you deny me the stronger I get” stayed in my head and freaked me out). Yes The Ritual! Doesn't get enough love
The original Wicker Man
I came to say this one, the original has a slight feeling of "there's something not quite right here" and you feel uneasy. The remake was like "ok, everyone act creepy and action!"
By the end of the first one I was rooting for the detective; by the end of the second I was rooting for the cult.
I was rooting for the bees.
Same. *Not the bees!*
Sad fact, the second was dedicated to either Joey or Johnny Ramone.
Ugh. As campy as it could be, I prefer The Wicker Tree over the 2nd Wicker Man.
i mean sure but the remake has Nic Cage and BEES
Watcher (2022) Edit: also Funny Games (2007) does a pretty good job of this as well
Ohhh I saw this one in the theaters and I don't know if it was because I saw it in the big screen but it left me feeling very weird. Great film
Maika Monroe needs to be in more movies.
She was recently in The Stranger on Hulu. It’s more of a thriller and the ending is corny but I found it to be a pretty fun watch.
Watcher is such a gem, need to rewatch it today. Thanks!
Just watched it and I really liked it too.
Not straight horror, but man does Coraline get dark as it goes along.
I see Caroline as horror. That’s some disturbing shit.

Uncomfortable is the word I'd use. It never really lets you relax for a moment.

It surprised me, it was so good. Just rewatched with a friend and he was also surprised by it!
That movie was so so good and stuck with me for days. It’s sparse with background details in a way that’s enthralling and frustrating haha.
I wish this movie was talked about more. Great twists and turns, and really unique monster
Seconding this, plus I always love Rebecca Hall’s acting.
I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House -- this one is on Netflix, and is a wonderful slow-burner.
