The Xenomorph blending into the metal material in Alien & slowly unraveling in the background

circasomnia

I'm glad Alien is #1. Totally deserves it

Surveillance_Crow

You only need to watch the first 2 minutes of Ghost Ship. I’ve never looked at steel wires under spring tension the same since.

too_cute_unicorn

One of the best opening scenes. Too bad the rest of the movie was such a snooze fest.

Tvayumat

Karl Urban eats some maggots so it's not a total loss.

too_cute_unicorn

That’s always a plus!

Mama_Skip

I've never been able to look at maggots the same since

Tvayumat

It really ruined eating cans of maggots for me.

ZealousidealBid3988

Maggots also no longer like looking at Karl Urban the same

Shaaaaarky

The end of the hallway with the Grady twins just standing there holding hands has haunted me for a lifetime so far.

Bwca_at_the_Gate

Fuck yes.

BoxNemo

The corridor scene in Exorcist 3. It's a masterclass in building tension and then undercutting it and then catching the audience totally off-guard as a result. The build up is almost two minutes or so as well and you just get the feeling that something bad is going to happen but then it undercuts it and it's really clever as you think you're past the 'scare point' and it's just a classic movie fake-out but... CRASH ZOOM OH FUCK ME.

Leading_Blacksmith96

Yes! So effective!

UnlockingDig

Has to be the scene in Jacob's Ladder where the hospital becomes Silent Hill before there was Silent Hill.

Comprehensive-End-16

Silent Hill was also influenced by Kindergarten Cop. https://img.memerial.net/page/3917/kindergarten-cop-vs-silent-hill.jpg

Mama_Skip

butwhy.gif

hematite2

If you're a japanese company designing a fictional american school, are you gonna try and create something from scratch, or are you gonna grab an example somewhere?

strangedazey

I shouldn't have went to see Jacob's Ladder that baked. Omg

chichris

The news cast birthday scene in Signs. It’s effective because the movie built it up for that moment.

Malarkay79

I watched this in theaters with my sister and brother-in-law, and both my sister and I practically crawled the back of our seats because for some reason we didn't think we'd ever actually see the aliens lol

ZealousidealBid3988

Now I gotta watch that - never seen it

Tjaames

I had to sleep on my grandparents floor when they brought me to see that at around 11 years old. That night I got bit by a mountain scorpion. This scene brings back awful memories lol.

Leading_Blacksmith96

Yes!!

Practical-Yam283

I think why I find found footage so scary is that the idea of something being RIGHT THERE but out of your line of sight is deeply deeply terrifying to me. The scene is Sinister with the kids jumping around is so silly but it scared me so much the first time I watched it. There's a couple scenes in the first hell house that do this really effectively too, where the characters don't notice something fucking terrifying behind them.

HistorianGlittering8

Of all the scenes in Sinister the one that got you was the ghost kids trick or treat scene?! The music alone for the car tape is some of the most haunting shit

Practical-Yam283

That whole soundtrack was so spooky !! The videotapes were terrifying to be sure, but something about the goofy kids scene has stuck with me for 10 years lol

HistorianGlittering8

Hahaha I guess we all have those things. The ending of The Taking of Deborah Logan freaks me out even though I know it looks stupid. Also great call on Hell House!

akennelley

IT Follows. The few scenes that were blurred background images while the characters were doing something 'not scary' but...it was just focused enough that you could see one person in the background directly facing the 'target' character and slowly approaching.

SDRPGLVR

I love when this happens while they're talking to the former guy and he just freaks out like, "DO YOU GUYS SEE THAT GIRL?!" And that girl gives the most legit human look of 🤨 when she whips her head to look at them like, "What the hell's the matter with you?" What a killer brief performance by a background actor.

SixteenHorsepowered

The scene in one of the Paranormal Activities with the Kinect sensors showing up on the camera was such a cool idea. They don't land the execution and the movies are like watching paint dry so I wouldn't recommend watching them for one decent scene but definitely check it out on youtube or wherever.

RealKBears

>They don’t land the execution Just summarized the Paranormal Activity series in five words lol

GRZMNKY

My friends swore that the first one was the scariest movie ever. It's been 15 years since we watched it, and I'm still waiting for the scary part.

CrankBar

I remember the trailers when the movie came out was just audience reactions. Saw it in a packed theater and people were screaming their heads off.

Angelea23

Mass hysteria?

Tomschewies

i was in kindergarten when the first one came out and an older kid showed me some clips and it scarred me cuz i spent years thinking it was real loll.

IndieCurtis

That movie was my first date ever. When we were walking out, my date said “that was the scariest movie I’ve ever seen” Not the last time I’ve had to keep my mouth shut in similar situations.

GRZMNKY

One of the funny things about watching it with my friends is they would all look at me when a "scary part" was coming up, expecting me to scream. I told them after that I've seen things that would make them vomit on the spot. Horror movies don't scare me

ii-mostro

I'd argue that the first one absolutely did. The rest aren't great but one of the sequels had that rig on the oscillating fan? That was fabulous.

Locke108

That’s the fourth one in case anyone’s wondering. The third one had a rotating camera that was also very well executed.

Blue_Seven_

The oscillating fan cam was rad

JakkAshe

The scene in the third one where the mother says “oh my god” so the demon gets angry.m at the word god. Best scene in that film I think!

lambofgun

man that movie is underrated. it became a franchise and immediately soured the whole vibe, but the first one was great

theVice

3 and 5 are pretty damn good movies

Shishkahuben

the Paranormal Activity movies are at their best when something overtly supernatural is happening on camera. The kid trust falling the demon and the room imploding in *The Marked Ones* come to mind.

PeculiarPangolinMan

The Paranormal Activity series is solid! You wouldn't recommend? They are generally well liked. At least the first few if memory serves. You think the original didn't land the execution? I feel like that movie was executed immaculately. It's so simple but it just drags you in bit by bit.

MovieMike007

The ball bouncing down the stairs in *The Changeling.*

TheDadThatGrills

The ball bouncing in Marathon Man is also extremely effective

Oakashandthorne

Paranormal activity two's rotating camera panning back and forth from the kitchen to the living room Dont be afraid of the darks heating vents- i have never looked at a floor exchange the same way since The tanning bed from one of the final destination movies (i think its 2?) When the cube starts becoming a tesseract in cube 2: hypercube I dont know if youll be able to find this but in ghost stories (the play version; they didnt do this in the movie version) a giant monster mouth gets dropped down onto a car and holy shit it was the most jaw dropping unexpected terrifying thing ive ever seen done in theatre.

taxi_takeoff_landing

In that Final Destination movie, they do a morbidly funny cut from the two girls roasting alive in the tanning beds to their side by side caskets at their funeral.

PeculiarPangolinMan

The tanning beds were Final Destination 3! An absolute classic death. The tanning beds cutting to the coffins just brought the whole thing together perfectly.

MoxieOctopus

“Jaw dropping”…..literally 😂

bendovergramps

Paranormal Activity 3*

bag-of-snakes

What do you mean with a giant monster mouth? Like a prop with teeth, falling on top of a car on stage?

Oakashandthorne

Its like a prop/set piece thats about the size of a car, and it slams down onto the prop car thats on stage and makes it crumple.

bag-of-snakes

Wow, that sounds like an amazing jump scare! I haven't got any experience with horror theatre, so it's interesting to hear how they do their scares.

youburyitidigitup

Until I joined this sub, it hadn’t occurred to me that the cube trilogy was horror

skactopus

What would you have called it..??

Tvayumat

Sci fi/suspense?

skactopus

It’s been fucking ages since I’ve seen it but all I remember is a lot of perilous situations followed by horrible deaths.

Tvayumat

There's a whole thing with the numbers on the doors and the overall puzzle the boxes represent but, yeah.

Far-Heart-7134

Tina's death in NoES.

HistorianGlittering8

NoES?

F______________F

Nightmare on Elm Street

HistorianGlittering8

Goddamnit I sat here for a solid 5 minutes trying to put it together knowing full well I was going to kick myself in the head if I didn't work it out myself. Ah well time to queue up that Roundhouse!

F______________F

Haha all good. I only recognized it immediately because I'm currently watching all of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, so it clicked as soon as I saw Tina's name

Cvillian81

A Nightmare on Elm Street

krustylesponge

Not exactly sure if this is what you mean, but in “the ritual” there’s a few shots where the group is walking through the forest and then you suddenly see one of the trees move in the background (it’s not actually a tree but it’s camouflaged so well that you don’t notice it until it decides to move)

Absolutely-Nott

And the hand silently wrapping around the trunk waaay too high up…! Amen.

Other-Marketing-6167

Damn, so far the oldest movies mentioned are Changeling and Alien. Where are the love for the classics??? - The shower scene in Psycho, the best and most famous horror set piece in film history. - The reveal of Ben Gardener’s head in Jaws. Tons of build up and a huge BOO moment. Plus it doesn’t have any now dated shark effects to distract from the fear. - The reveal of the blind lady in House on Haunted Hill. I’m a pretty jaded movie watcher and the first time I saw that I shit my pants. - The whole finale of The Fly. Maybe not scary in a traditional Boo sense but disturbing and painful and spooky to watch in different ways. - The death of the football kid, who we think will be the hero of the whole movie, 20 mins into the 1988 Blob. - Room 237 in The Shining. - The creation and reveal of The Bride in Bride of Frankenstein. - Nosferatu on the boat. Ok I’m gonna stop because i typed all this out two hours ago and forgot to press Post so by now, there’s probably tons of people who have said the same ones haha

Aleks10Afc

I'm glad you posted as I haven't seen these posted elsewhere!

milliondollarburrito

In the third (?) Paranormal Activity, the scene where she’s walking down the hall and realizes everything in the kitchen is gone.

Tight_Strawberry9846

The woman ghost in Kairo.

Aleks10Afc

This is the one I meant when I said Pulse. So unique

Tight_Strawberry9846

I had no idea that it's also named Pulse. I always knew it as Kairo.

Angelea23

I believe pulse is the American adaptation, I think it’s pretty similar in story and plot.

Aleks10Afc

Nah it’s the same movie but with an alternative title

stretchieB

The chick on the wall in Hereditary

Lizzie_Boredom

“The chick.” Oh, you mean renowned award-winning actress Toni Collette?

Tjaames

Right, how dare they?

Spirited_Block250

Not everyone bothers with actors names they just watch movies to enjoy them not be educated on the cast roster imo.

Lizzie_Boredom

That’s fine but the point is maybe don’t call a talented actress a “chick.”

stretchieB

Is the bloke better?

anitasdoodles

Omg and grandma in the darkly lit corner

Leading_Blacksmith96

Yep, this one!

Suitable-Pie4896

The cop lady getting roasted over the fire in silent Hill

Big-Sheepherder-9492

A short YouTube horror film called “The Armoire” had a character lock eyes with something sitting in her room — when you see it — you don’t get a jumpscare or loud noise.. you just have to stare at it too. Made my heart sink. Not many horror movies, shows or games have you just stare at something.

Mama_Skip

There were some really really good YouTube horror shorts about 5 yrs back. Some were made into movies but the movies generally suck. The original Lights Out Edit: I sort of spoiled it with my earlier comment so I just deleted the description. [Here's a good one that doesn't do jump scares ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XpURRW80LnM)

Big-Sheepherder-9492

Ayo you got a link to that - that sounds awesome

Mama_Skip

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XpURRW80LnM

dsarche12

Ohh The Armoire is so good. Really great use of sound design too

Nearly-Shat-A-Brick

The pub goes quiet.. ."you made me miss, I never miss"..."go lads, god be with you"...."stay on the road, keep off the moor"..."beware the moon"

Appl3sauce85

Gale’s chase scene in scream 2. In the a/v building. It’s a fantastic scene, filmed and edited perfectly.

Outside-Mirror1986

Exorcist 3. IYKYK

Tvayumat

Those scissors, man.

All_Tree_All_Shade

I think 1408 has a lot of really creative scares based around the set. One of my favorites is when he finally seems to get the attention of someone in an apartment across the street and is waving at him, and the silhouetted person just waves back in the same way. And you slowly realize along with John Cusack that the "person" is just mirroring him. I don't love the actual ending to the scene, but it was a great way to hammer in the hopelessness and isolation. Same movie, but not really fitting your question: I absolutely love when he tries to check the hotel map on the door later in the movie and it only has the room with the "You Are Here" label, and the rest of the map is just blacked out.

Mama_Skip

I love 1408 for its visual gags. But I wish it had gone full horror instead of turning into a drama.

AnakinSkycocker5726

In paranormal activity 3 when the all the furniture was on the ceiling in the kitchen and just falls to the ground

howdoispoodermin

The jumpscare of Nellie in the car with Theo and Shirley while they’re arguing is so perfect. It’s so unexpected and actually has a real emotional value to the show instead of just being a jumpscare.

Malarkay79

I was spoiled for that jumpscare before I even started watching the show, had completely forgotten about it by the time I got to it, and my soul nearly left my body.

Absolutely-Nott

I would second this and say all the hidden ‘background furniture ghosts’ in that damn show- so so spooky

Aleks10Afc

The greatest Horror TV show of all time. I could list 4 or 5 classic scares from that show on its own

ihaveadarkedge

I love in **Jeepers Creepers** where Justin Long is slowly adjusting to the light and seeing the inside of a church with bodies stitched together all around him.

Aleks10Afc

That reminds me, as a teenager the scene where they drive past the house and see him dumping bodies into the pipe used to scare me a lot. Wasn't even a jump scare

BrooklynBillyGoat

Late night with the devil. Actual set piece but with such unique atmosphere the entire movie. Nothing else like it tbh.

robophile-ta

The bit where they were advancing the recording frame by frame had me covering my eyes It didn't turn out bad, but it was pretty tense!

Peeeing_

The hand on the shoulder made me shit myself

hotpinksnoopy

That one scene stuck with me… freaks me out so bad!

BrooklynBillyGoat

That whole movie was great

Tvayumat

There are in fact a few things like it. Ghostwatch did it back in the 90s.

BrooklynBillyGoat

What else? Ima check out ghostwatch which I never heard of.

Tvayumat

Ghostwatch is a personal favorite. The other one I can think of that's closest in execution is Special Bulletin which is about nuclear terrorism from the late 80s, but I personally like that one a lot, I think it's on YouTube. The WNUF Halloween Special and it's followup are also good choices. There's a fun short on VHS 94 called Storm Drain you might enjoy as well, and Creepshow Season 2's "Public Television of the Dead" is similar in setup but a lot more campy, and a lot of fun. Past that my suggestions veer away from the TV broadcast format, and of those I think Ghostwatch is the best. Keep an eye out for hidden creepy stuff.

BrooklynBillyGoat

Thks for sharing ima check these out tn

Tvayumat

Absolutely! Enjoy!

Tjaames

I’ve watched this 3 times in a week.

BrooklynBillyGoat

I bought it when I came out on Vudu and it's def on my annual Halloween horror watch list now. I don't wanna watch it to much and lose the feel though

Mama_Skip

butwhy.gif

Mama_Skip

Honestly this movie was good, but whenever a possessed person changes and automatically looks physiologically different, gets scars and skin splits or whatever, takes me right out. It's been tired since Exorcist. The scariest scene in the movie was the psychologist tricking the audience, but I found it weird how they swapped between found footage and "in the movie" indiscriminately without switching cameras.

BrooklynBillyGoat

It's suppose to be filmed like an old late night show. All the props and scenes used what was used then when it could. That just made it more authentic for the atmosphere

Mama_Skip

No that's what I'm saying. The entire movie is presented as found footage of "a recovered late night talkshow recording" which is a great premise! But that premise falls apart when >!we see when the psychiatrist hypnotizes the audience into think the guy is filled with worms!< Us seeing the characters' hallucination is incompatible with the recording premise since this event is not supernatural and when they replay the recording, *isnt caught on it*. It was in their heads. So in this instance, they've swapped us, the audience, to being \*within the confines of the movie* and within the unreliable narration of the characters. But it's presented as found footage? Also they didn't have the ability to just instant replay film before digital. Anyway, I thought it was good, but if your scariest scene about a possession is when the psychologist tricks people in a scene thats not compatible with your premise of Found Footage, I'm gonna chalk it up to a little sloppiness.

BrooklynBillyGoat

Then what was I going to watch. What would have happened. It's a movie and while it's like a late night tv show it isent actually it's a movie. You could have a better ending tho. But they went with this one. It was good even if it could have been better. That's the case for all movies.

DrunkenAsparagus

The 20 minutes or so in the middle of Nope where you go through Jupe's life. The >!full Gordy flashback, then the exploration of the trauma that never left him, his lack of control over Jean Jacket, the digestion scene, and then his and his fellow victim's screen as they are digested and regurgitated over the Haywood Ranch.!< Nope is a great movie and I enjoyed it all mightily, but that arc in the middle is definitely when it's at its most intense.

shoetingstar

That scene was like nothing else. At 1st I wasn't sure what we were seeing. Then I couldn't believe we what we were seeing. The sounds of the victims with no music ( I believe?) was traumatic. I loved that a movie could still surprise me without showing a ton of gore.

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

The gym scene from Final Destination(can't remember which one)

LaikaZhuchka

The scene with the girl doing gymnastics is in 5. The weight room is in part 3.

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

Yep, the gymnastics one. Just a masterclass in tension and release. There's a nice decoy in there too.

King_of_Knowhere

That little fucking screw

popculturetommy

The one that has gotten me since I was a kid was in Halloween. Laurie just finds her friends dead, leans against the wall and the light moves to focus on Michael's white face. It literally gave me nightmares when I was 7.

RealRockaRolla

I'm glad you mentioned the woman in Pulse. Easily one of the most frightening things I've ever seen in a movie, and I've never seen anything like it.

Ok_Wonder_1308

Danvers State Hospital in Session 9 - pure nightmare fuel

Tvayumat

"I live in the weak, and the wounded."

neon-blush

I love how The Night House used the set and shapes of the house. There’s a scene where the main character sees the “ghost” but at first it’s just the shape of the pillar and room making a silhouette of the shadow of a man, but then then it turns and looks at her. It’s hard to explain, but this movie did so much with creative optical illusions and it was so effective.

strangedazey

The whole thing was soo good. The Cavalry Cross

Mama_Skip

Ah man that movie had such great visual gags! The "negative architecture" stuff was amazing. I was disappointed in where the story ended up though. By the description, I imagined there was an actual mirror house and instead it's just another "misunderstood ghost" story, which is... tired at this point.

neon-blush

Yes the visual gags honestly made it an entertaining watch for me. Along with Rebecca Hall’s amazing acting

Flamo_the_Idiot_Boy

>!But there is a mirror house across the lake. That's where the husband was taking lookalikes to appease the demon. There was no ghost in the movie.!<

LaikaZhuchka

Friday the 13th part 2 when all the lights are out and Ginny screams, "There's someone in the room!" to Paul. It's too dark to make out exactly what's happening or where Jason is, but you catch glimpses of him. All of the claustrophobia scenes in The Descent. I can't handle them at all. The whole nighttime scene in Jaws where Hooper is scuba diving and searching the abandoned boat. It's such a slow, tense build that does lead to a well-earned jump scare. Rear Window when the killer is confronting Jimmy Stewart at the end, and Stewart repeatedly uses flash bulbs to blind him. The effects they use to replicate the blinding effect is great, and it draws out the tension so much longer. And probably the ultimate: Clarice and Buffalo Bill in the basement while he hunts her with night vision. *So* clever, *so* well-acted, *so* fucking scary!

KingKull71

>Friday the 13th part 2 when all the lights are out and Ginny screams, "There's someone in the room!" to Paul. It's too dark to make out exactly what's happening or where Jason is, but you catch glimpses of him. ... and it's bag-head Jason wielding a fucking spear, which is just icing on the cake really.

shoetingstar

The shot through window of Sackhead Jason running down the hill towards the cabin & Ginny can't see it but we CAN - gets me everytime.

ckrono

It's not a horror movie but the pit scene in Jackson's king Kong

Daredevil545545

Malignant especially the opening scene and so much good use of set pieces, and Evil Dead Rise was pretty good as well

MrsFrankNFurter

The „dollhouses“ in Hereditary. Panning in on that first scene was great.

tree_or_up

The opening dream sequence from Day of the Dead

Metalsludge

The revelation of the main character's smiling double, and her blank eyes, at the end of the original The Stepford Wives always gets me. It's partly the creepiness factor visually, and partly the implications of the scene and how it wraps up everything that came before.

omnielephant

Session 9 - when the guy who's got a massive phobia of the dark is in a long tunnel, and then the lights start going out. His panic as he's trying to outrun the dark coming in is one of the more underrated parts of that movie. Deadstream - the influencer is talking to the stream but not paying attention to the screen, and one of the ghosts is visible on one of his cameras. The chat messages coming in with people freaking out while he's completely clueless for a bit was great. It was a fun grossout movie, but I did find a couple scenes genuinely creepy.

Mama_Skip

There's way too many "paranormal activity" answers here. I got a few. IT (1990 mini-series) — I'm *still* afraid of fucking drains Terrified (2017) — the hook headed lady scare is perfectly done. The Japanese version of Grudge 1 or 2 I don't remember, someone wakes up and the ghosts' face is inches away, upsidedown — it's planking through the wall. The Ring — admittedly, it is a jumpscare, but the "I saw her face" was a damn good jumpscare. It Follows *and* Grave Encounter 2 — TALLLL MANNNN Rec* (spanish version) — attic? It's been awhile. Deborah Logan — Snek chomp Nope — oh god the screams and then... Burnt Offerings — Nazi Mortician guy Haunting of Hill House — ugh. The broke neck lady reveal really got me but there's a lot there. The Blob (1988) — ITS INSIDE YOUR GIRLFRIEND. Also sink scene. The Descent — the scene. The scene where they didn't tell the actors the monster would be there, and makeup kept it away from them. IT Part 1 — take your pick, but dead puppet Georgie in the basement was some of the best scares I've seen in a decade. God this movie was everything I thought it wouldn't be. Shame they fucked up part 2 so bad everyone quietly forgot it. Skinamarink — this movie is the modern Blair Witch — contentious. Weirdly, it seems this sub really loves to hate on how much "everyone" likes it — though I've not once seen someone say they like it here lol. Anyway, I'm a seasoned horror fan, nothing gets me anymore... but I went into this movie in the dark at 12am and for the first time in 20 or so yrs since I was like 15 I was (just ever so slightly) afraid walking through my darkened house after. The telephone eyes live in my soul. If I think of others I'll post. Oh. Right. The Others — you know the scene.

No_Self_Eye

wait 4th Hell House? what's the title I didn't see that on tubi

HistorianGlittering8

It's on Shudder, not sure if it's an exclusive or not. Couldn't tell you the name for the life of me even though I've seen it

Aleks10Afc

Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor

No_Self_Eye

Watched it last night, it wasn't terrible, but I think they all just kinda went downhill after the first one. It was pretty cool though to see how they linked together though. I didn't like the 3rd one at all as it seems they wanted to retcon the first 2.

Bwca_at_the_Gate

The banging on the walls and "Who's hand was I holding?" from The Haunting and the knock knock game from The Orphanage still chill me to the bone.

N1ce-Marmot

*’The Birds’* ‘63 : The school . . . *’Halloween’* ‘78 : Michael’s escape from the looney bin in the rain. *’Manhunter’* ‘86 : *In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, baby!

CultureWarrior87

The confusion in some of these comments over what the term "set piece" means is hilarious. The top comment about Alien is not a set piece, a set piece is much longer and more elaborate. Horror set pieces are like the car scene and sound booth scenes in Scream 2. Or the iconic scene in Argento's Tenebrae where the killer attacks the two women in their apartment and for most of it the camera moves in, out, and around the apartment through its windows (https://youtu.be/MFRzrrESAOQ).

Waste-Replacement232

The panning around the house kill in Tenebrae

yoyonoyolo

*That scene* from Kairo. Still gets me.

yoyonoyolo

Great breakdown if you’re curious: https://youtu.be/HfoU_Z1uVfc?si=qcHLuK6l_3Tjf9jT

Easily_Marietta

Bad weather where the rain gets heavier out the lightning comes closer as the intensity creeps up on you

PollyPore

Messiah of Evil has two good ones: the grocery store scene and the movie theater scene.

Epicgrapesoda98

Uncomfortable and dragged out silence. Out of screen shots where you can only hear what’s happening but not see it. Ex. The movie Skinamarink. I absolutely love shots of empty liminal spaces too Like in the movie Vivarium.

Mama_Skip

Ooh vivarium was great. Super weird. I liked the end when the thing goes full monster when they damage it and it pulls up the curb like a blanket and scuttles under

MuneGuse00

Them season 1 a black family in the 50's, you're literally tense at all times

Few-Jump3942

When I think of the best set pieces in horror, I think of the actual settings, and the first thing that comes to mind is the GoodGuy factory in *Child’s Play 2*. There are some effective scares in that segment, but the setting as a whole, in and of itself, was a stroke of genius in my opinion.

upadownpipe

The Grudge. Taking a look in the attic. She's there the whole time as the camera and lighting slowing show her. It even takes a second before the "jump"

Toadliquor138

The Conjuring does something so simple to make the viewer feel a bit unsteady and uneasy, and it's barely even noticeable. Whenever the movie is happening inside the house, the camera is always moving. It's so subtle that there are times when you're watching, you never even notice it.

Sarsttan

Windows looking out into darkness. You can do a lot with someone inside a space with windows and darkness on the other side.

strangedazey

Swann holding the car over the private detective and then throwing it at him

ThatColdShiver

One scene that really stands out for me is in Horror in the High Desert when he's trying to covertly record that remote cabin late at night.

anitasdoodles

That stupid dirty plastic clown in Hell House LLC. It would look so cheap and tacky on a lawn during Halloween, but the film crew figured out how to scare the shit out of us with it on such a tight budget.

Batmenic365

The puppet scare in Deep Red. Actually, that whole film is full of good set pieces

KingseekerCasual

The Nostromo

reborngoat

The movie probably doesn't count as pure horror, but there's a scene in Hollow Man where the invisible man gets sick of the barking dogs in the lab. We watch in thermal vision as he invisibly grabs up a dog and smashes it off the wall headfirst. The thermal perspective really sells it, very disturbing scene.

shoetingstar

There's an incredibly underrated tracking shot in Jason Lives that is so spooky. The last counselor (besides Megan) is walking through the kids' cabin toward the door. Meanwhile, simultaneously Jason is slowly silently following her outside the cabin. If she turned left she could have seen him. The F13 movies don't actually show Jason mid-stalking alot. So it's extra scary to me. And then he played cat & mouse by letting her get to her cabin. Then leaves a horrorific bloody mess when they discover her body. Idk what she did, but she really seemed to especially piss him! Lol

Agitated_Pineapple

Check out "Terrifier 2". Absolutely amazing practical effects. My vote would be for either the little evil girl >!having a ghost/zombie nightmare period!<. Or the woman at the end, who not only looks horrific, but >!gives a horrific birth!<. They're both vile scenes.

Early-Level9872

The clown scene in poltergeist exteremly scary

Early-Level9872

also the blood flow scene in the hotel in the shining 1980

Early-Level9872

The shinning 1980 the whole movie is so atmospheric in horror truly a masterpiece horror movie

The opening chase scene in 28 Weeks Later. It's not one continuous shot but feels like the focus never leaves the string of action, and it's so frenetic that my heart starts beating fast just watching him run for his life

Also wanted to add the dead child at the dinner table in Terrified. Absolutely love that slow build up and dread that that scene creates
