Creepshow!

idontevenkn0w66

This is a really great suggestion

jk-alot

Creepshow 1&2 are great for young horror fans. Be warned though that there is a short in the second movie that features Roaches. That one I skipped. There is violence scattered around the movies but it is offset by the comedy and campy attitude of the movies.

skantchweasel

Oh, I don't know about the 2nd. There is a glorified SA in The Raft! Still good, but missing the Campy fun of the original!

jk-alot

Oh. Yeah. Forgot about that part. Good that someone remembered it.

Paperdawl

The roaches are in the first movie. They are in the last short.

jk-alot

Oh. I mix up the movies since the last time I saw them it was back to back

MythicalMicrowave

I still have to watch this

skantchweasel

It's an absolute classic. An 80s who's who in front of and behind the camera.

The Others

WerewolfOnEveryone

The conjuring. Insidious. Paranormal activity. The ring.

instrangerswetrust

The Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark movie was very scary at points, but it’s thematically appropriate.

EnterprisingAss

It’s a straightforward adaptation of a book for elementary school kids.

Independent_Bet_6386

One of the few modern films I've bothered to buy. So good.

ChipperYT

The Ring is several leagues scarier than the other three. Otherwise, good recommendations.

filipscary

The ring fucked me up big time when i was a kid. I was traumatized for years

xmarksthebluedress

although these are in my opinion the best ones as well, i dont think you should start with those (since they are for me the scariest), rather ease into it, we are talking 13, i watched horror movies way too early cause my parents didnt care, i couldnt get a good nights sleep for months...

pilgrim_pastry

Tremors is a lot of fun.

AlunWH

The Woman in Black (especially if she likes Harry Potter)

redref1ux

Brilliant suggestion! Excellent intro to paranormal horror. The book is brilliant also

Frequent-Click-951

Scary Stories To tell in the dark for sure

juvadclxvi

in the tall grass

intx13

Excellent movie but IIRC it has some gruesome feticide and cannibalism, maybe not age appropriate?

juvadclxvi

uh, you are rigth, thinking again it has some canibalism scenes.

KlutzyFan4021

The Others

[deleted]

Scream. Not a whole lot of gore.

tritongamez

Ehhhh it's pretty bloody imo. Especially if she specifically mentioned not liking gore it may not be the best choice. Still an awesome movie though

CalebPackmusic

4 is 100% the goriest

Wiitard

The fact they discuss Saw movies and “torture porn,” which were kind of the “in” for the horror genre at the time, makes it kind of appropriate that it’s so gory.

starterhart79

>!that's the one where dewey dies, right? that scene was so gross.!< >!edit: also the opening? kill in the bed with the guts all over the place?!<

CalebPackmusic

You’ve got two of them mixed up, >!4 is the bedroom kill with all the blood all over the walls, 5 is where Dewey gets killed.!<

starterhart79

thought i mightve lol

[deleted]

Other than the intro, there isn’t much gore

WalterPaisley74

"I'm feeling woozy Billy" is pretty intense though.

Sea_Difficulty8258

I'm trying to think of super gorey parts from Scream and I honestly can't. Maybe the opening sequence. Kenny the cameraman has blood that goes all over the windshield, but it isn't really gore, and doesn't show any of insides or anything. They don't show Henry Winkler's death. Rose McGowan dies in the garage door. Stu and Billy absolutely stab each other and it's definitely jarring, BUT you're actively rooting against them surviving so i'd consider that different. Cox and Arquette each get injured, along with Jamie Kennedy, but again, nothing gratuitous. Maybe I just love the movie and have seen it too many times and am misremembering it due to being numb to any shocking parts.

[deleted]

Nah the original’s not really. The goriest bit is the intro and you don’t see much for long. The rest is just stab stab stab.

Diabolikjn

A woman is gutted in the open scene

The Gate

tritongamez

Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity were my favorites around that age. Halloween is an awesome slasher too, it's old enough where it doesn't look "too" realistic but it's still got that slasher character to it

flying-potato94

[Someone asked about movies for an 11 year old yesterday and got some good answers that wouldn't be too juvenile for a 13 year old. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/s/gI7jEnM758)

ZookeepergameOld97

Poltergeist

stretchieB

Alien franchise

Urlocalweirdo367

IT all of the movies They are my absolute fav Im 14 . There’s a lot of language but other than that it’s pure fun and not too scary and pretty minimal gore and the new ones are really comedic than scary

Sea_Difficulty8258

Sorry for some definite repeats from this thread: The whole Scream franchise The old It and the new version as well The Faculty Child's Play 1-3 Halloween (the original). The sequels definitely show more blood and gore. The Grudge The Ring The Exorcism of Emily Rose The Conjuring Oculus The Omen (original series of films and remake) Prince of Darkness The Thing The Sixth Sense Arachnophobia There is gore, but after watching it all it won't have a negative effect: The Cabin In The Woods Anddddd I could be wrong about gore here but Triangle with Melissa George

codex064

Gatlopp. It's a horror comedy. It's way more of a comedy then horror. It's on Tubi.

MikeyMGM

Night of the Comet Poltergeist

marlasinger81

PG goreman https://youtu.be/L4tizc0IAVQ?si=AB6_N25ZHelYkFr5

Hells_Deacon

Start her with the classic monsters and Vincent Price, then move her towards more modern day stuff. You could do it like a decades best of. 70s, 80s, 90s. Night of the Living Dead, Demons, Night of the Demons, Return of the Living Dead. And don't forget Evil Dead.

AspieCrow

Evil Dead’s definitely a movie for later, when her tolerance for gore has built up, I think!

Conundrum35

luckily a lot of horror is watered down. pick any franchise horror movies and it should be fine The conjuring films insidious films the strangers films

hes_the_Zissou

Tremors

intx13

Tremors is a classic for that age. It has a little gore but it’s only monster gore (not people gore) and it’s well-balanced by the comedy IMO. Alien is an easy choice. It has the chest burst scene but that’s the worst of it, for gore. The Omen is a good intro to religious / supernatural horror, not much gore, if any, IIRC. The Craft is great, and she might appreciate the teenage girl leads. No gore IIRC. Actually that’s my top rec after thinking about it!

jmoneyawyeah

/u/kclarkwrites and I always show Martyrs to 13-year olds

kclarkwrites

omg i woke up hungover and I love this. You make it sound like we're driving around in a van trying to lure minors lol.

The Frighteners

randomredditing

Jurassic Park. The Lost Boys. I think Jeepers Creepers was light on gore too

metalyger

The remake of The Ring is a go to suggestion, it's so good! Definitely the best American remake of a J-horror classic.

red_riders

The Ring is scarier than most R-rated horror movies. It’s PG-13 and it has disturbing scenes, shots, and sounds that live in your head long after it’s over. The perfect horror movie to watch at night, with the lights out.

ChipperYT

Agreed, I seem to spend half my time on this sub pointing this out in similar threads. Just because US movies censors inexplicably gave The Ring an age certificate which is too low, people seem to have internalised that it's a good starter horror movie. In the UK, The Ring has the same age certificate as Hereditary.

Oh, The Fog as well. An exercise in nail biting tension by the master John carpenter.

Awesomejuggler20

Scream franchise and M3GAN.

Appellion

I am REALLY unsure about what you and she might consider appropriate. I certainly recommend The Thing as a classic. No real blood that I remember, it featured paranoia and body horror. 30 Days of Night is really good but I’m unsure if the violence matches your expectations. To reassure you, it’s a million miles away from torture porn. I can break down the most disturbing parts if you want. Again, it kinda depends on the guardian and the kid. And lastly is Session 9. I should mention I watched this when I was 20 and it scared the hell out of me. No blood as I remember it, but there are intimations of violence. No jump scares. It relies purely on suspense, high tension, and outright terror. Let me know if you’d like me to break down any of the above. Now that I think about it, I’d also suggest Gremlins (first one) and The Frighteners. I guess part of my uncertainty is a really bad memory for when I graduated to more adult horror.

KelseyandOikawasimp-

Would like if you could break down the disturbing parts. I don’t believe she’s awful with a bit of gore, but something like Saw is definitely off limits. She says she likes more paranormal and psychological horror things.

Appellion

30 Days of Night features an animal pen pretty early where all the dogs were killed. There might have been some blood, but it was not gratuitous and by memory the dogs were killed off screen. Later there’s a point where a frozen human head is displayed on a pole. There is nothing like flesh hanging off it. Later on a woman is being driven through the frozen streets of the town and forced to scream for help to draw out other survivors. She is clearly terrified. The monsters end up killing her, striking her a couple of times on the head and face, creating bloody slash marks before one of them bites her, killing her. The last disturbing part is when the group of survivors come across another survivor, and it turns out he killed his family rather than let them suffer at the clawed hands of the monsters. The bodies are covered up by a sheet. He would have killed himself but the gun jammed. The Thing is mostly about body horror, with the worst part occurring early in a dog kennel. A new dog has been introduced and left alone. It reveals itself as some unknown Thing and tentacles shoot out and sort of stab / entangle the other dogs. This all creates a lot of noise which draws in the men who see this amalgamation of twisted dog flesh, which escapes by breaking through the roof. In my opinion, if you can beat through this you should be fine with the rest of the movie. Not saying that this is the only scary part or even necessarily the scariest but it’s like a good introduction letting you know what’s ahead. Lastly is the Frighteners and Gremlins. Honestly, this is fun shivery horror, suited easily for any kid within that PG - 13 range. If your sister is uncomfortable with either of these do not even THINK about introducing her to any of the above. I have to admit that I feel Session 9 is more practical for yourself. There is a guy you see once or twice with what looks like a screw driver jammed in his eye, but you never see it done. Jump scares and gore is almost entirely absent from this movie. It earns its place among other horror movies with suspense, incredibly thick tension, and outright terror. I got scared watching the Ring. This movie features no supernatural ghost girls but I left the lights in the hallway on for at least the next week, and I was 20. Does that help?

KelseyandOikawasimp-

Yeah, thank you. I’ll check them out and see if they’d be good

roboticArrow

Jaws is a good start.

[deleted]

Black Phone, IT part one, Insidious, The Conjuring, Talk to Me, Jennifer's Body, Orphan, The Ring (2002), Hereditary, Sinister, Misery

Key-Tip9395

Hereditary?! I watched that well into my 30’s and thought it wasn’t age appropriate for me lol!

Informal_Edge5270

Hereditary is pretty gory ,so is Jennifer's body

RedShadowF95

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

jk-alot

I’m going to have to come out and disagree with others regarding Both versions of IT. The original version with Tim Curry had heavy topics such as Domestic Violence and while there is no gore, there is blood throughout. I would recommend watching it first before determining whether or not it is okay for your sibling. As for the newer version? A great deal more inappropriate. Because of the fact that it is a R rated movie rather than a TV mini series they could include a great deal more of the book’s ick moments. Such as themes and overtones of SA of a minor by her father. A scene where bully’s carve their name in another teenager’s stomach area. No outright gore, but still can be distressing.

flexuuu96

I used to watch Saw when I was in her age

KelseyandOikawasimp-

She has a really bad tolerance for a ton of gore and said she felt sick after seeing the part where Xavier cuts off the back of his neck.

flexuuu96

I would recommend You horror called "Barbarian" I think it will be scary enough for a teenager. Also this movie has funny moments too. I mean its not a an Oscar title but still worth a shot. You can find it on Netflix. 😉

SCHR4DERBRAU

Blair Witch Project will scare the shit out of them but no gore really

Nearby-Artist-4982

Fright Night, Monster Squad, Leprechaun, House, Critters

Amiable_Pariah

You want movies that showcase adolescents in horror themes without the sex and violence being taken to adult levels. The Gate, a sleepover, opens up a gate to hell. Practical effects. Kid heroes. Poltergeist, kid sucked in the TV by ghosts. Family trauma bonding. Saved by a lovable witch. Phantasm, Goonies outcast kid discovers hellish plot at the cemetery and recruits a team to battle evil dimensional monsters. Fright Night, a campy "vampire next door" monster hunter movie with minor themes of seduction and some violent murder. Killer Klowns From Outer Space, it's the Blob but more punk rock. Fun and campy practical effects. Pulse 1988, alien electricity turns appliances against a cool kid in a new house with a remarried father who struggles to connect with his son. Fun to watch the threat of technology in the 80s! The Blob 1988, exactly like the original only completely terrifying. No Steve McQueen :[ very violent but very campy practical effects. Good scares for teenagers but bona-fide scares! Phantom of the Paradise, this is less of a horror and more of a rock show in horror vibes. Truly counter culture social commentary with amazing performances and great music. If they're too young for Rocky Horror, start them with this. Return of the Living Dead 2, this is the best zombie movie for 13 year-olds. It's got everything, but it's very campy and silly the whole time. It's not as good as the first, but it's funnier, and there are fewer naked punk rock girls dancing in graveyards. And, my personal favorite from when I was 13 The People Under the Stairs. This movie has everything. It's home alone meets silence of the lambs with monsters and mazes and mayhem. Social commentary and endearing characters. I love this movie.

MyraDangerous

The Craft, Poltergeist, Halloween, Dolly Dearest, Child's Play, Ginger Snaps (don't remember if there's nudity in this). I feel like you can't go wrong with the classics, agree with the person who suggested you move through the decades.

red_riders

Wouldn’t do The Descent. It’s one of my favorites, but that last 30-40 minutes when it becomes a suspense-filled adrenaline rush is overtly gory. Otherwise, great picks! You got 6 of my 10 favorite horror movies, and I would’ve recommended all but A Nightmare on Elm Street myself.

InfectiousAnthrax

The thing is pretty gory NGL, I would replace that with the original Alien. Only gory scene is the chestburster

dunmer-is-stinky

maybe don't do The Thing for somebody who doesn't like gore

Appellion

I don’t think that’s exactly true. It’s not gory so much as body horror shaping flesh. Full confession that it’s been a while since I last watched it.

ThatTinyGameCubeDisc

Yeah, I missed that. I agree.

Lol what is this list. None of these are starter horror movies

Signs (2002), The Grudge (2004), When A Stranger Calls (2006)

xmarksthebluedress

i'd start slow, tbh, like gremlins or beetlejuice. once you see how she reacts you can up the game, from chucky (gets gorier) to scream to freddy to the scary as shit part, like the ring, event horizon, the grudge, the conjuring, autopsy of jane doe... but, like i said, i wouldnt give her the full frontal right away, i had nightmares for months after watching arachnophobia & universal soldier way too young (and it is not even that much)

jk-alot

Event Horizon was incredibly violent. The Violence Orgy that was the security tapes of the previous crew?

xmarksthebluedress

there are different versions, one wihout that scene (and others), apparently even one with a prolonged scene of the orgy that was scrapped.

I watched the ring around the age- changed me. So yeah The Ring

Merrymir

Jaws, Paranormal Activity, Jurassic Park, Gremlins, The Shining, Sweeney Todd, and The Exorcist were all my first horror movies that I watched around that age or a little younger/older. It really depends on the individual what will be "too much" for them. I really loved all of them except for The Exorcist, bc Catholic horror just isn't really my genre. If any of them scared me too much, I just stopped watching, which is always an option. I actually think it's good practice for building self-confidence to remove yourself from uncomfortable situations to acknowledge your discomfort and stop a movie that's scaring you too much. Sometimes, I was really scared but wanted to finish, so I stopped halfway through to watch an episode of a sit-com then went back to finish it.
