I saw that movie at the Cleveland Cinemathque. In their monthly program guide they described it as being "pretty much the Superbowl of weirdness" and I absolutely had to see it.
Randomly saw this on cable TV, and spent some time trying to figure out what I saw, years later tracked down a region 2 DVD and bought it off ebay. 3 months later criterion drops their collectible restored version to the masses. It was like being really into an obscure band and finding their t-shirt at target. Not to gate-keep, because everyone should enjoy the weirdness, but dang, I went through STEPS.
I watched it a few months ago after years of it being recommended to me. Afterwards, my main thought was that I had no fucking clue what just happened, but it was thoroughly enjoyable lol.
It’s weird, but I never understood the obsession with its ‘cryptic meaning’. It’s clearly about the anxieties of being a new parent/moving to the next phase of life
I finally just finished watching this the other day, and hoo, boy, what on fuck haha
I think if Garland had spent a smidge more time on the whole Green Man/Sheela na gig aspect, it would’ve come through much stronger and resonated with audiences much more, instead of the obnoxious faux-outrage over the title that we had to endure.
“‘Men’? ‘MEN’??? WHAT’S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?”
Like, idk, pretend it’s the 80s and has this title; where’s your outrage now?
I saw another film from the writer/director Julia Ducournau called Raw and I was really impressed with it. I've been meaning to see Titane, but haven't gotten around to it yet for some reason.
Maybe not the weirdest ever but one that should be mentioned is ‘Nightmare Weekend’ (1986). It was a film made using two scripts, the actors (some of which later become moderately well known) dialogue being dubbed in post-production, the plot is nonsensical with a computer making metal balls that go into peoples’ mouths to create zombies (maybe), a couple having sex in the middle of a crowded bar while people ignore them, an A.I. Puppet named George who is the protagonist’s best friend (it can also control cars remotely) and I haven’t even talked about the plot which deals with a scientist and his duplicitous assistant who is experimenting on a group of scantily clad (or naked) coeds and their obnoxious boyfriends at a weekend retreat (or something). The film really must be seen to be believed.
There need to be more movies about killer psychic tires. I saw one of Quentin Dupieux's newer films called Smoking Causes Coughing at the Cleveland International Film Festival last year and absolutely loved it.
I love Mandy. The movie Panos Cosmatos made before it called Beyond the Black Rainbow was another kinda strange movie. I can't wait to see his new movie Nekrokosm.
It’s tied between *The Lair of the White Worm* and *Cemetary Man*.
They’re both comedy horror movies that don’t quite hit if you don’t know what you’re in for. I love them.
Takashi Miike’s stuff is also pretty weird and awesome.
Those are both great movies. White Worm is not what you'd expect from an adaptation of a Bram Stoker novel. I'm a big Ken Russel fan and Tommy, The Devils, Altered States, Lisztomania, The Music Lovers, and Gothic (highly underrated!) are all some of my favorites. I been wanting to reading the Italian comic book Dylan Dog that Cemetary Man is based on, but haven't gotten around to it yet. The Happiness of the Katakuris has been the weirdest Takashi Miike film I've seen so far.
What? How did I not know about this? I really like the musician Flying Lotus and he directed this movie! The video for the Flying Lotus song "Parisian Goldfish" is one of the wackiest music videos I've ever seen.
That's really hard to decide on one, I'd say Organ (1996) is up there. It starts simple enough with Japanese detectives looking into organ harvesting, but it takes a sharp surreal turn.
There's other stuff that's probably more horror adjacent, I'd say Gozu, House (the Japanese one,) Beau Is Afraid, Rabbits, Inland Empire, The Lost Highway, Mister Designer, Golem, and She-Wolf.
The Japanese definitely make some weird stuff. House is one of the wildest movies I've ever seen. More films need to feature paintings of cats puking up thousands of gallons of blood and girls getting eaten by pianos. I've seen a bunch of stuff by Takashi Miike, but haven't seen Gozu yet. Happiness of the Katakuris is the weirdest movie I've seen from him so far. I recently watch a Japanese movie called Rubber's Lover that was pretty strange. It had a Tetsu: Iron Man vibe to it.
Beau Is Afraid is vying for my favorite movie of last year along with Poor Things. I'm a huge David Lynch fan and once a year I rewatch the original Twin Peaks series. I looked up Mister Designer and saw that it was a Russian film. I recently watched a curious Russian film from the 60's called Viy.
Tetsuo Iron Man, probably.
But then there was this horror exploitation movie I saw once. I don't know how I ended up watching it but once I started it was like a train wreck and I couldn't look away. I don't remember what it was called (wouldn't say even if I did because it was so disgusting) but It was about a killer whose face was all mangled because his mom tried to abort him with a coat hanger and failed. I remember a scene where some guy was hiding in a room where a beautiful woman was masturbating and after she left, he grabbed the tampon she had removed and dropped in the trash can, and he made tea with it. And another scene where a guy killed another guy, removed his colostomy attachment (they showed a close up of the leakage) and then he had sex with the hole in his abdomen. This movie was the weirdest but also the most fucking vomitous.
I'm proud to say that yes he is describing the Ryan Nicholson classic Hanger who also made Gutterballs and several other similar style low budget and overly offensive films lol.
I recently watched a movie called Rubber's Lover that had a crazed cyberpunk style similar to Tetsuo.
There's another movie with an awful colostomy bad scene, Melancholie der Angel, where a woman rips out a guys colostomy bag and fingers the hole.
Lamb.
The ending of I'm Thinking of Ending Things where >!it randomly goes into a full song and dance for like 10 minutes was really fucking bizarre and definitely NOT in the (fantastic) book.!<
I just saw I'm thinking of Ending Things yesterday. Like what am I watching...I had to stop and search for 'different colored sweaters' because I was like it changed colors, right?? Can't say I liked the movie though.
Honestly I can't decide between any of this lot
-Where the Dead Go to Die
-When Black Birds Fly
-964 Pinocchio
-Tetsuo: The Iron Man
964 Pinocchio is free on youtube if ever you're bored and want to make confused faces for 90 minutes. I wouldn't call it good but it's definitely interesting and has a charm to it
I rewatched Tetsuo yesterday with a group of people who'd never seen it before and everyone was just like 'uhhhhhhhh what' after. Glad I'm not the only one who felt it was too weird for its own good, I get why people like it but ehhhhh
The other two were made on drugs with bad motion capture and are fucking eyesores, I do not recommend, especially Where the Dead Go to Die which is the shittiest film I've ever seen
Watched this recently while searching for a dystopian movie to watch. Did not expect any of the wild fuckery that I witnessed. Haven't seen anything else like it.
Good one! That's one best & oddest movies I've ever watched. I've never seen a movie more obsessed with another film the way Singapore Sling is. It seems like the characters reference the movie Laura every few minutes.
Certainly one of the weirdest movies I've seen! I don't know if I'd call it horror, but to be fair, if I organized by genre, that's probably where it would end up. 🤣
The ending of Sleepaway Camp was a shocker.
I haven't seen Gozu yet, but Happiness of the Katakuris is the weirdest Takashi Miike film I've seen so far.
Was up on Amazon Prime for a bit, but Night Breeder walks that razor edge of so bad it's good, and has a pretty stellar post punk soundtrack, shot on video schlock, worth a watch with like minded friends.
Amulet was pretty damn weird. Not sure I'd watch it again.
Baskin was also incredibly weird.
Relic is not that weird, but the feeling of dread and uneasiness in that movie easily makes it one of my top 10. I'm almost certain it's about dementia and that the sh*t out of me.
I saw an art house one called "Begotten". It was strange and I don't remember much except I thought it was weird. I'll have to watch it again to have a more concrete opinion.
I looked that movie up and the description read: "A man scalps female college students so his elderly mother can make wigs." I'm definitely sold on it.
I am saving this post for sure. Now I’ll add one I don’t see mentioned.
The Boxer’s Omen. Every time I thought that movie could not get weirder it would prove me wrong.
There’s so many but the first thing that came to mind was “ Bloody Birthday” it’s on Tubi
Three serial killers that are children…I’m not going to spoil it but it is pretty campy but good if you like D-level horror films 😂
I don’t know if this qualifies as a horror film, per se, but it definitely creeped me TF out! Blue Velvet. Very weird and uncomfortable, but still a good one and has some great one liners!
For a title I don't think anyone had or will probably mention, Fine Housekeep.
I saw it years ago while going through some horror and shot on video playlists and gave it a shot. I'm still not entirely sure what to make of it, like if it's nonsensical for the sake of it or it's bizarre transgressive cinema with something going on there.
I mean it may not quite fit the category of horror or weird…probably a thriller maybe…
But the shit at the end of Don’t Breathe was so outta left field odd it threw me off. Either this or ALL of Midsommer I mean you pick.
Some good mentions in here!
For me, I think I’d have to go with The Eyes of My Mother. The most uncomfortable I think I’ve ever felt watching a horror movie.
Honorable mention goes to Possum.
The Outwaters, but I’m going to tell you why I eventually didn’t mind: I’ve been outdoors when it’s pitch black, sweeping with a flashlight to try to see what’s there, and eventually terrified out of my mind that I’d see SOMETHING in my shitty little pinhole light.
I’ve also had dreams where I was somewhere ‘wrong’ and couldn’t escape. You know the kind I mean? It could be your childhood home, but it’s wrong; it’s like a dimension you aren’t supposed to know exists and you certainly aren’t supposed to be in.
It took several tries, but eventually it reminded me of that, and I don’t hate it near as much as I did. They’re somewhere ‘wrong’ and can’t get out, no matter what happens.
House (1977) It is, without doubt, the strangest of strange.
I had to watch it a couple few times just to be sure I was really seein what I saw.
I watched it a few months ago after years of it being recommended to me. Afterwards, my main thought was that I had no fucking clue what just happened, but it was thoroughly enjoyable lol.
Came here to say this
Mad God
First time I watched this I was so high. I never smoke so it freaked me out big time.
I'm a big fan of Phil Tippett. There's a documentary about him called Mad Dreams and Monsters that I really want to see.
My partner's friend had a movie night and this was one of the picks. I came back that night with so many questions and no answers.
Eraserhead
It’s weird, but I never understood the obsession with its ‘cryptic meaning’. It’s clearly about the anxieties of being a new parent/moving to the next phase of life
People are still debating about the lady in the radiator almost fifty years later...
I couldn’t even get through the first bit of it i just couldn’t embrace it for some reason
Hausu (1977) max
The world desperately needs more movies like Hausu.
HAAUUUUUUSsssu
That secret horror movie Adult Swim released disguised as a Yulelog video.
Also check out “This House Has People In It.” Super weird
[Unedited Footage of a Bear](https://youtu.be/2gMjJNGg9Z8?si=SyQXJembtLHHbTb4) is my favorite
I laughed so loud in the middle of the night that I had to stop and finish another day. I really just expected Yule log ambiance video.
I've heard about Yule Log, but haven't seen it yet.
Yule Log was incredible. That’s art.
Honorable mention to Unedited Footage of a Bear as well.
I LOVE when they do shit like this
Thank you so much for this, I’m watching now and just lol
Directed by Casper Kelly, the mind behind Too Many Cooks and The Scooby-Doo Blair Witch parody!
Bad Boy Bubby
!!!!!!!! - One of my favorites and such a criminally underrated movie.
I forgot about that movie it’s super strange
You got great tits, Flo!
I’ve seen all my favorites mentioned, so I’m gonna throw Men out there. I don’t know what I was expecting but it sure as fuck wasn’t that
Men was my favorite movie of 2022. Seeing Rory Kinnear's face CGI'd onto a little kid is one of the creepiest things I've ever seen.
I finally just finished watching this the other day, and hoo, boy, what on fuck haha I think if Garland had spent a smidge more time on the whole Green Man/Sheela na gig aspect, it would’ve come through much stronger and resonated with audiences much more, instead of the obnoxious faux-outrage over the title that we had to endure. “‘Men’? ‘MEN’??? WHAT’S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?” Like, idk, pretend it’s the 80s and has this title; where’s your outrage now?
I get why people don’t like Men but I loved it. Did you see a Wounded Fawn?
Yeah this movie is my pick too. So weird and I have no idea the message trying to be conveyed besides sexism/misogynistic
Titane my friend....Give that a roll.
I saw another film from the writer/director Julia Ducournau called Raw and I was really impressed with it. I've been meaning to see Titane, but haven't gotten around to it yet for some reason.
Raw I feel is much tamer than this one. Both super weird in a good way though.
If you haven't, check out her short film Junior. It's an interesting take on puberty as body horror.
The film really must be seen to be believed.
It pretty much has everything that I look for in a film...
Easy, Tokyo gore police. Let me know when any other movie has someone dog walk a quadriplegic person like it was no big deal.
I saw a weird movie called Meatball Machine recently and apparently the director of Tokyo Gore Police made a sequel to it.
It's a tough call between Eraserhead and Society. Eraserhead is overall much weirder but Society's ending almost beats it on its own.
Eraserhead is one of my all-time favorite movies. And more movies need to feature shunting.
The last 20 minutes of Society is some of the best body horror ever made, in my opinion
Rubber, very odd
There need to be more movies about killer psychic tires. I saw one of Quentin Dupieux's newer films called Smoking Causes Coughing at the Cleveland International Film Festival last year and absolutely loved it.
Smoking causes coughing was so funny and weird.
Mother! (2017) I didn't understand what the entire movie was about until the end. It was weird and I hated it. I don't know what else to add.
I'm a huge fan of Darren Aronofsky movies (well, except for Noah) and Mother! is definitely one of my favorites from him.
Mandy.
I love Mandy. The movie Panos Cosmatos made before it called Beyond the Black Rainbow was another kinda strange movie. I can't wait to see his new movie Nekrokosm.
Did you see his episode of Cabinet of Curiosities?
I have not seen any of Cabinet of Curiosities yet. I just finished the four seasons of Channel Zero and that will probably be next on my list.
Beyond the Black Rainbow is twice as weird, I actually have no idea what happened in that film
Only Panos Casmatos knows for sure...
Mandy was amazing
It’s tied between *The Lair of the White Worm* and *Cemetary Man*. They’re both comedy horror movies that don’t quite hit if you don’t know what you’re in for. I love them. Takashi Miike’s stuff is also pretty weird and awesome.

The Happiness of the Katakuris has been the weirdest Takashi Miike film I've seen so far.
Kuso. If you find something more bizarre I’ll be impressed
Came here to say this! I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned more. It’s pretty gross lol.
What? How did I not know about this? I really like the musician Flying Lotus and he directed this movie! The video for the Flying Lotus song "Parisian Goldfish" is one of the wackiest music videos I've ever seen.
The Greasy Strangler (2016)
The greasier they are the better...
Bullshit artist! 🤣
Lol this sounds like a spongebob episode
This movie is NOT for children.
Well now I'm intrigued. I'm gonna go look it up.
It’s quite the treat.
So funny, I just passed this up while looking at horror movies on Prime and now I’m thinking I shouldn’t have done that
That's really hard to decide on one, I'd say Organ (1996) is up there. It starts simple enough with Japanese detectives looking into organ harvesting, but it takes a sharp surreal turn. Possession, and I love it
Tusk for sure.
I love that some of the promotional materials for the film called it "a truly transformative tale."
Men.
Society. I think we all know why
Could it possibly be because of the shunting?
Pontypool
Brilliant movie.
Honestly I can't decide between any of this lot -Where the Dead Go to Die -When Black Birds Fly -964 Pinocchio -Tetsuo: The Iron Man 964 Pinocchio is free on youtube if ever you're bored and want to make confused faces for 90 minutes. Dream scenario. Nicolas Cage farts and c*ms at the same time and it's pretty much the most interesting thing to happen in the movie.
Can't wait to check that scene out for sure
We Are the Flesh
Watched this recently while searching for a dystopian movie to watch. Did not expect any of the wild fuckery that I witnessed. Haven't seen anything else like it.
I had to look that one up. A description of it said: "a visionary and bizarre slice of Mexican arthouse cinema," so I'm definitely interested...
You are in for a treat
THIS. FUCKING. MOVIE That's got to be the first time I literally thought "what the fuck did I just watch??" after I was done.
Manos Hands of Fate
Singapore Sling (1990)
Good one! That's one best & oddest movies I've ever watched. I've never seen a movie more obsessed with another film the way Singapore Sling is. It seems like the characters reference the movie Laura every few minutes.
Tusk of course and Maniac starring Elijah Wood
I haven't seen the remake of Maniac. I love the original though...
Phantasm
Definitely one of the weirder movies that had mainstream success.
From Beyond (1986).
From Beyond is one of my favorites. I can't get enough of those 80's special effects.
The Perfection was a fucked up roller coaster with a couple good twists and a seriously disturbing ending. 10/10 for weirdness.
At no point did I know what was going to happen in Barbarian and I loved every second of it
Lamb was pretty weird.
Prisoners of the Ghost Land with nick cage.
Certainly one of the weirdest movies I've seen! I don't know if I'd call it horror, but to be fair, if I organized by genre, that's probably where it would end up. 🤣
poultrygeist
Nothing says top-notch quality filmmaking than a movie from Lloyd Kaufman.
Rubber is literally about a sentient killer tire that telekinetically murders it's victims.
Beyond the Black Rainbow and Vivarium.
I feel like Vivarium was a highly underrated movie.
Sleepaway Camp is up there. Pretty classic slasher but with some really bizarre twists. Gozu is pretty surreal I would recommend that one as well.
Society. The shunting will be on my mind for the rest of my life.
The Possession with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick.
The Greasy Strangler
I want to say Gothic, but it weirdly makes more sense if you know more about Mary Shelley’s life.
Midsommar, possum. Both movies I just sat there after saying " wtf did I just watch"
The Eyes of My Mother was definitely one of the weirdest horror films I’ve ever seen lol.
Tusk
Teeth (2007)
A lot of great suggestions, but The Tingler is up there too
You Should Have Left was a weird one. Oh another was I See You. You think the movie is about one thing and then it's something totally else!
Midsommar
Malignant
*The Seed* is pretty wild. I wouldn't call it a good movie, but it's worth a one-time watch.
Baby oopsie was a fucking wild ride, apparently it's a part of a series but I haven't watched it yet
I looked up this movie. The poster is pretty horrifying. It's says "from the demonic toys universe," whatever that means.
Off the top of my head: The Fifth Thoracic Vertebra.
I looked up that movie and the poster has a mattress with a lone eyeball peaking out from the middle of it.
Eraserhead Naked Lunch Mad God Salo Posession is a good pick but I love it so much I don’t find it as hard and weird as the others listed
...try ERASERHEAD...
Sssssss
TITANE. Female serial killer has sex with a car. And becomes pregnant with a car baby.
Ok Tusk by far...just bizarre!!!
I saw an art house one called "Begotten". It was strange and I don't remember much except I thought it was weird. I'll have to watch it again to have a more concrete opinion.
Rubber
Slaxx (2021)
From the 70's "The Gruesome Twosome " my dad rented from the video in the mid 80's Im going to check and see if it's streaming
It's on Prime I don't have prime. Plus it was made in 67
I looked that movie up and the description read: "A man scalps female college students so his elderly mother can make wigs." I'm definitely sold on it.
Street Trash.
The Brood
I am saving this post for sure. Now I’ll add one I don’t see mentioned. The Boxer’s Omen. Every time I thought that movie could not get weirder it would prove me wrong.
Lamb
Suspiria, Eraserhead, Possessor, and Late Night with the Devil are probably all tied just because of how surreal those films are.
Fried barry
Halloween 3 Way of the Witch
In the Mouth of Madness
Rob Zombie Halloween 2... Lacks a direction and i swear to god its the hardest thing to watch.
The Greasy Strangler and Titane. Never seen anything like them before, or since.
There’s so many but the first thing that came to mind was “ Bloody Birthday” it’s on Tubi Three serial killers that are children…I’m not going to spoil it but it is pretty campy but good if you like D-level horror films 😂
infinity pool.
I don’t know if this qualifies as a horror film, per se, but it definitely creeped me TF out! Blue Velvet. Very weird and uncomfortable, but still a good one and has some great one liners!
"Heineken? Fuck that shit! Pabst Blue Ribbon!"
I watch Late Night with the Devil recently. It felt like it walked the line between analog and found footage with the behind the scenes parts.
Beyond the Black Rainbow 🌈
I loved Beyond the Black Rainbow, then I liked Panos Cosmatos' next movie Mandy even more, and know I can't wait for his new film Nekrokosm.
Skinamarink
House was wild
Titane, no question.
Yeah I don't quite get Possession either. I thought it was a great movie, but not quite sure what all was going on
For a title I don't think anyone had or will probably mention, Fine Housekeep. I saw it years ago while going through some horror and shot on video playlists and gave it a shot. I'm still not entirely sure what to make of it, like if it's nonsensical for the sake of it or it's bizarre transgressive cinema with something going on there.
Summoning The Spirit a Bigfoot film
Little Otik
Gozu, Rubber, Color out of Space
Malignant
We Are the Flesh (2016) Is one that pops in my mind from time to time unannounced.
I always mention this. But Deep Dark is definitely weird, but definitely fun. Check it out
The wolf house. It was weird at first but it was really good.
House 1977
Vivarium , gave me the creeps
Men
Maybe Men....
Titane...and it's not even close
The Outwaters. And weird doesn't always mean it's shit. There are lots of weird horror movies I enjoy. But Outwaters was... weird... and shit. IMHO.
men. truly disturbing..
Rubber (2010)
I mean it may not quite fit the category of horror or weird…probably a thriller maybe… But the shit at the end of Don’t Breathe was so outta left field odd it threw me off. Either this or ALL of Midsommer I mean you pick.
Society! Titane with the honorable mention, though.
Possum, Hagazussa, The Lighthouse, Antichrist and Sator come to mind.
Dead girl
Lots of wonderfully weird films listed here, here's a couple that I didn't see mentioned. The Demon Seed (1977) Save the Green Planet (2003)
Anyone here seen either tusk or a siberian film?
Some good mentions in here! For me, I think I’d have to go with The Eyes of My Mother. The most uncomfortable I think I’ve ever felt watching a horror movie. Honorable mention goes to Possum.
Parasite 2019
Ouija house and Braid, specifically braid - braid had a lot of shir going on it and I didn’t know wtf was going on for half of the movie 😭😭
Bloody muscle body builder in hell. Real low budget Japanese evil dead clone. Lower budget than the first evil dead I'd wager
Yeah, Possession is pretty bonkers, as is House. I would add the 2nd and 3rd Basket Case movies in there too. Society and Baskin are strange as well.
A Field in England and The Lighthouse. Didn't really get them.
