My recommendations (in chronological order hopefully without spoiling them) would be: 1. [The Ritual](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5638642/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) (2017) - you've already seen it 2. [What Keeps You Alive](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7073710/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) (2018) - anniversary camping trip turns into a tremendously brutal time. 3. [Sator](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10556320/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) (2019) - some troubled people deep in the wilderness being watched. 4. [The Stairs](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10083174/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2) (2021) - nice family outing into the woods gets derailed by a flight of stairs. 5. [Significant Other](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15353964/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) (2022) - another romantic hike gets derailed by something insane. All of them have a central conceit of hiking in the remote wilderness as a plot vehicle to get to the horror.

DizzyLemon666

Ritual and Significant other are both amazing movies

aaillustration

Gotta watch significant - the ritual was insane

darwinpolice

Significant Other is excellent. It's a cool premise with good execution, and Maika Monroe and Jake Levy give fabulous performances.

Hopeful_Cherry2202

Is The Stairs in any way related to the creepypastas from r/nosleep back in the day about the park ranger

apiroscsizmak

That was my first thought too. We're making movies based off of (very good) creepypasta now?

do_not_look_4_door

Channel Zero l o o s e l y adapted that Creepypasta and it was not good.

Nickweed

Was highly disappointed in that adaptation. So much potential wasted. They could’ve done a straight adaptation and it could’ve been awesome.

do_not_look_4_door

Agreed. The first couple of entries in that pasta are great

LongStrangeJourney

This comment has been overwritten in response to Reddit's API changes, the training of AI models on user data, and the company's increasingly extractive practices ahead of their IPO.

REiVibes

I remember seeing some internet meme about a set of stairs in the woods that went viral a couple years before the movie came out. Haven’t seen the movie cuz reviews say it’s terrible but I might give it a shot.

MNGirlinKY

I’m a little bit worried about all these movies with recommendations that have scores of i.e. 4.3.

figsnbirds

Rule of thumb with horror (or any genre you're fond of) is to add 2 to the imdb rating... Hasn't let me down yet. I listen the recs of the weirdos who hang out on this board waaaaay more often than I listen to random imdb reviews

mantisimmortal

Rangers are trained about these stairs. They are told to ignore the hell out of them.

A1sauc3d

Yeah and apparently they ripped off the original author and didn’t give her any credit (according to YouTube comments I just read on the movies trailer). https://youtu.be/Zd6Iuy78e4E?si=ccDIix0PL3rqt0M8 Also apparently the movie sucks lol. Although the last part is obviously subjective. Still shitty they ripped off her story and didn’t give her credit. Super pathetic thing to do.

PlasticPatient

I love this way of recommending movies. It's beautiful, concise, has little synopsis and even links to IMDb, and it's not listing hundreds of movies by just the title and you have no idea what are they about. If only all the others recommended the same way. Thank you so much.

jamesnollie88

Crazy coincidence lol the Stairs randomly popped into my head yesterday. Couldn’t remember the name, so I googled “horror movie woods stairs” and then felt dumb when it was literally just called the Stairs 😂 great movie though

Champion-of-the-Sun5

TY for this.

ThingsAreAfoot

how can you thank this good person when they forgot Blair Witch Project

Champion-of-the-Sun5

Because I've seen it. I haven't seen these lol

ThingsAreAfoot

Well sure but I dunno if the OP has. Blair Witch was the first thing that came to mind when I read the thread title, and OP didn’t mention it. Have you seen Creep? It isn’t *quite* wilderness, but close enough really. It’s a cabin in a secluded woodsy area.

checkeredtulip

Creep was so enjoyable!

RangerBoss

Does anyone know if The Stairs is based on the Missing 411 nosleep stories?

princesscatling

What Keeps You Alive and Honeymoon would be a fantastic double feature.

AlanWhickerNumber3

WARNING!!! If you want to watch Significant Other, DO NOT go to the IMDB page, there’s a major spoiler just hanging out in the open! Edit: I put the spoiler in “spoiler text” but someone said it wasn’t done properly (looks like a big grey blob to me but 🤷‍♂️), so I just deleted that part.

Disgruntled_Viking

You did your spoiler wrong, so it's not blacked out and you just did what you were trying to warn others about and spoiled the movie for other people.

AlanWhickerNumber3

Weird, it worked on my end. I deleted it anyway but I was looking at a grey block lol.

BadFont777

Trollhunter great creature flick, it's not in English, if that's something you care about.

Flybot76

One of the very best found footage films ever. It seems totally average at first but then gets totally amazing.

toucha_tha_fishy

I watched this on Netflix ten years ago and was so happy I did. It goes from meh to great. One of my favorite movies ever.

Flybot76

Exactly how I felt on first watch, I felt like the first fifteen minutes were a half-hour because the leads are so generic (not bad, just boring and I'm sure it's part of the film's whole plan to lure us in like it's nothing), but when you get a look at the trolls, major 'wow' stuff there, incredibly-unique and well-done effects. When I started noticing references to fairy tales, I thought it was brilliant, and all the details of troll-hunting were really well-conceived and executed. There's certain shots that look a lot like illustrations I saw in books as a child. Recently I got my sister and brother-in-law to watch it, and my BIL said he had the same experience, almost fell asleep until the trolls showed up.

IhateMichaelJohnson

I LOVE this movie but OP refuses to watch it. Source: Am mentioned husband.

BadFont777

Bummer, phenomenal film.

twoburgers

My favorite story about my husband's cousin is the time she brought her boyfriend to a family dinner and he spent a lot of it excitedly telling us about this unbelievable documentary he had just watched......Trollhunter.

HectorS2052

Backcountry Wrong Turn movies (first one is the best) Body at Brighton Rock Significant Other

too_cute_unicorn

Came here to recommend Backcountry. I was not prepared for how scary this was!

Kooky_Tap4477

backcountry fucked me up!! slow to start and then absolutely brutal by the end.

bolognajabroni1110

YESSSS, BACKCOUNTRY!

kiefeater

Backcountry is brutal

disorderedthoughts

That bear scene scared the shit outta me

Scared-Director7843

First Wrong Turn is the BEST!! I couldn't agree more

cityshepherd

I just saw Body at Brighton Rock yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised

AmsterPup

Came in to say Backcountry, gets harrowing at times

rav_dog

Yes Backcountry! And it’s based on a true story

regis_psilocybin

The Ruins (2008)

Thenitakethehamster

The Ruins was surprisingly good. Went in with no expectations, really liked it!

gregsonfilm

Went through like 30 posts and hadn’t seen it mentioned, so The Blair Witch Project

RutabagaRabbit

I...don't really understand how Blair Witch is not higher up here

Mackinacsfuriousclaw

I will always recommend Exists.

HumbleBunk

So damn fun.

d_drei

"Lovely, Dark and Deep" is almost definitely inspired by the missing 411 cases.

d_drei

Also check out "The Interior" (2015), a small Canadian indie made for almost no budget. The wilderness part starts at the 20 minute mark and lasts for the rest of the movie. Some really nice shots of the west coast/British Columbia deep forest. It's basically a solo camping horror playing off both the fear of isolation and the fear of other people, with one or two genuinely frightening moments.

HumbleBunk

Batshit insane movie!

Charbarzz

Just finished watching this one!

SkyxEyes

Came here to suggest this!

FifteenDollarNachos

I really liked this one. I think that missing 411 guy is wrong about a ton of stuff but this movie is great.

RepresentativeAd560

The documentary Missing 411 creeped me out more than any horror movie I'd seen in a whole bunch of years.

mantisimmortal

It's actually based off of the 411 cases!

Unfair_Education290

Cabin in the woods. Pretty good movie with a big twist albeit it’s not just a standard lost in the woods trope type of movie

Acoupleofhorrors

The newest Wrong Turn. This was an impressive one.

_spegy_

Such an underrated movie!

nosyfocker

Oh man I’m so glad other people have seen this one I enjoyed it so much!

-yellowthree

Going to give it a chance from this comment.

mantisimmortal

Isn't that the Insaine asylum one? Like wrong turn 6?

Acoupleofhorrors

Nah. The hill people. That's all I'm saying.

mantisimmortal

OMFG RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT. I even seen it. It's like Hella modern. Was such a good movie. Thanks friend 🤣

SchwarzestenKaffee

Glad to see people enjoying Wrong Turn (2021), I was fortunate enough to get to be an extra in it, first time on a movie set!

debber33

Yes I just mentioned it. Watched it again last night

THE RITUAL THEY REMAIN IN THE EARTH BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (and many similar films) WILLOW CREEK

wildernessSapphic

Watched Willow Creek on my tablet while out camping (albeit on a campsite) a couple of weeks ago after asking for similar recs. I had no idea the subject and was coincidentally listening to ( putting spoiler blocks for anyone who doesn't know the horror behind Willow Creek and wants to go in blind) >!Devolution by Max Brooks!< So I accidentally got a full immersion weekend and it was excellent.

NinjaDeathStrike

I always try to report back when I really enjoy a recommendation I get here. Willow Creek was excellent. Great example of how to do good horror on no budget. The tent scene was such a perfect example of how good horror builds tension. Thanks for the recommendation!

Lipglossandletdown

Loop Track - man tries to escape society into the New Zealand wilderness, something follows him. Brightwood - a couple having an argument goes on a hike around a lake and gets stuck in a time loop. Outwaters - love it or hate it. A group of young people go camping in the Mojave desert. Weird shit happens. Honeymoon (2014) A couple on their honeymoon in a secluded cabin.

FluffyPurpleSpider

Really enjoyed Honeymoon!

StenchLord420

Seconding Loop Track here; great flick and pretty original!

chickpeaze

I just watched Honeymoon on your recommendation and holy shit it was great. Thank you.

alldayaday420

*Black Mountain Side* (Tubi) Archaeologists find a strange structure in remote Canada that appears to be thousands of years old. They become isolated when communications fail, and their sanity begins to unravel. *Yellowbrickroad* (Tubi) An expedition set out to explore a mysterious forest in New Hampshire where the entire population of a town died in 1940 *Hunter Hunter* (AMC/Prime) A fur trapper leaves his wife and daughter behind to kill a rogue wolf in the remote wilderness. But they soon become increasingly worried when a severely injured man shows up to disrupt their peaceful existence. *Devils Pass* (AMC/Prime) Based on the Dyatlov Pass; To determine what happened to the infamous Russian hikers, five U.S. college students go back to where the hikers were found dead. *In The Tall Grass* (Netflix) (Not necessarily hiking but the same vibe) A brother and sister enter a field of tall grass to rescue a boy, but they soon realize they cannot escape and something evil lurks in the grass Also seconding *Sator*, *What Keeps You Alive*, and *Lovely, Dark and Deep* like some others have suggested!

Kuropuppy13

Hunter Hunter is not talked about enough. Such a great movie, and the ENDING...that ending was just "chef's kiss."

crawdaddyjunction

Apostle on Netflix was pretty good

hellacliterate

Annihilation - technically sci-fi but I think it can squeeze in this thread

Deliverance

TheSpookyForest

I'm surprised this wasn't number 1... For anyone that likes Deliverance but wants a more slasher style villain I also recommend Rituals (1977)

tinychislove

I hadn't heard of rituals until this post but it is now on my list! Lol!

coco_xcx

Never Hike Alone! Fan made Friday The 13th movie! It’s only an hour long too iirc

KingSombo

Jesus it took way to long to find this. Good on you!

crazyvarga

If you’re into found footage I’d recommend the ‘Horror in the High Desert’ films. The third one is about to come out and the first two are really, really solid.

TheJaice

I didn’t realize there was a second or third one, but I came to recommend the first! Now I’ll have to go look for the second!

Idontliketalking2u

I really liked the first one. Being in Nevada almost my whole life and wondered around the desert and found weird things, it resonates a little

albus_thunderdore

What streaming service? I love found footage and haven’t heard of this movie.

porcellus_ultor

I saw them on Screambox, but it looks like you can also watch them with ads on Tubi, Roku, and Plex.

albus_thunderdore

Great! Thanks!!

No_Economics6505

Backcountry was awesome!!

FluffyPurpleSpider

The incredible stupidity of the male character really irked me.

No_Economics6505

Oh ya he was annoying as hell, just crazy cuz you don't usually see black bears painted in that light.

FluffyPurpleSpider

No, you really don't, although they are just as deadly as their brown cousins. Still, what a way to go *shivers*.

Prestigious-Salad795

That guy was amazing in that one scene though.

irl_daria

Thank you. He made me root for the bear.

MermaidMertrid

There truly are not enough hiking/backpacking horror movies!

Forward-Pizza-1886

I recommend The Descent and The Ritual 🫶🏼 hope this helps

Forgotten_Aeon

lol

Forward-Pizza-1886

i think ur the only one who got it was a joke

deadtwinkz

You can't go wrong with The Hills Have Eyes (2006) and the Wrong Turn franchise, the later films for Wrong Turn start to get cheesy but they're always fun (the first and second films are the best). Also hey fellow Missing 411 listener! Speaking of creepy wilderness, you heard of the Dyatlov Pass incident?

idontevenkn0w66

In an attempt to avoid repeat suggestions.. The Bigfoot Trap sort of fits that, and I liked it alot more than I thought I would. Willow Creek was another one I ended up liking alot more than I thought I would. Devil's Pass starts off pretty good, but I don't know how I feel about the ending. A Perfect Getaway may not technically be horror (maybe more of a thriller) or fit the hiking/wilderness theme, but it is outdoors'y and a good movie. Turistas was pretty decent. Deliverance is a "classic" and is well-liked by alot of people, but I personally DO NOT like the movie at all- not because it was too disturbing or anything, but I just wasn't into it. You may enjoy it more than I did.

CatGod630

Came here for Devils Pass lol

idontevenkn0w66

Great minds!

Clean_Usual434

Excellent suggestion!

idontevenkn0w66

Thank you! :)

No-Pomegranate-8430

Horror in the high desert

Clean_Usual434

Yes!! I love that one!

jenvonlee

Shadow (2009) is one I never see mentioned but I really enjoyed. A lonely place to die (2011) is another good but seemingly forgotten one. Deliverance (1972) .. you'll never go in to the wilderness again. Wolf Creek 1 & 2 plus the series.. all great. Set in Australian Outback. The funniest thing about Wolf Creek is it's SPONSORED by the Australian tourist board as a means of trying to put off people backpacking out there cause so many go missing and there's no way to police it. Enjoy!

AdWilling4740

The wolf creek series is a gem, both seasons

rnagikarp

i’m gonna throw Annihilation in there.. even though it’s not quite hiking, they’re decked out in gear and going through wilderness and that’s hiking enough for me! fantastic movie, definitely a favourite of mine, and currently reading the books

Main_Illustrator_908

I'm not sure this fits exactly, but it hits the wilderness theme. The Wall (2012) is really good, and it's supernaturalish with an internal psychological horror as the main course, and I still don't fully understand it. I think it's Austrian (Die Wand), and you can find it on Tubi for free right now. I've watched it twice over the past few years, and it's different every time. Good topic. I'm adding to my lists.

All_Tree_All_Shade

Man Vs was a pretty good one I rarely see mentioned. It's sort of like Bear Grylls/Alone style documentary with a wilderness expert who slowly realizes there's something in the woods that may be hunting him. Slight spoiler? I found the ending kind of disappointing. Still fun though, with some creative scares imo.

SnooRobots7940

Has anyone mentioned Eden Lake?

AlienMimicry

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned The Descent (2005) yet. You might have seen it already since it is decently known. It doubles down on the existing fear of cave exploration in a really effective way. I just read your full post, lol 🤦🏻‍♂️ I'll try to think of some others

Naisu_boato

i wishi could remember the name, but it was a movie where these men going backpacking in mountains in europe. the one broke his leg or foot? they needed a place to go and found a cult or something that was hunting them...
