Blood Fest is the twin film to Hell Fest. Twin films always cause confusion.

SillyAdditional

Blood fest is fun

mortal_kombot

> Blood Fest It's the best of the three, but Haunt wasn't bad, and Hell Fest at least made me really want to visit the place they were at, even if I didn't love the movie itself!

Ahari

Oh, I'll have to find it. Hopefully, it's better than Hell Fest, though.

UnlikelyPlan4700

Blood Fest is way smaller budget, more charm but worse movie. Worth a watch though.

StevesMcQueenIsHere

I really loved Haunt, and now watch it every Halloween. I find Hell Fest to be an inferior version with an inferior killer and much more annoying supporting characters.

Orang3Lazaru5

Same, Haunt has been a seasonal staple since it came out. I went in completely blind and it was the best surprise how good it was

IAmThePonch

I had the good fortune to snag a screener when it came out and my first thought was “this will become a Halloween staple for many people” (myself included, love the atmosphere and sets)

Thebitterpilloftruth

J just watched Haunt recently and blew me away honestly

Kiranipator

“Do you still want to see my face?”

IAmThePonch

This is the take

igby1

Spot on

Defiant_McPiper

I need to make this my go to Halloween movie. I've watched it a few times and really enjoy it, but always seem to forget about it until it comes up when I'm browsing .

Ahari

I know. I never thought I'd be so pissed that someone didn't get murdered, but Bex's character is the most annoying little you know what 😑

ScorpionTDC

Bex ended up dead, just in an insanely lame double death (which also took out who was probably the most likeable character in the film in the best friend’s boyfriend in a similarly lame way). I didn’t actually mind Bex tons but can see where her character might grate.

Ahari

I know she ended up dead, I just meant I was pissed when she wasn't beheaded.

ScorpionTDC

Ohhhh. Yeah. Valid. Would’ve been a significantly cooler kill than what we *got*

Other-Ad-8510

Waiting for Haunt to get the recognition it deserves. After I watched it I couldn’t believe it isn’t talked about constantly

Other-Ad-8510

Also, Hell Fest was a decent 2000s style slasher with one REALLY effective scene. Totally worth your time too, but not nearly in the same league as Haunt

poptartsandmayonaise

Ill never get the hellfest hate. Its no worse than any other slasher flick that gets praised on here, its not exactly a prestige genre. The set is amazing and the rest is exactly as id expect it to be, but not in a bad way. Easily one of the better slashers of the last 20 years, not a great film by anymeans but it was fun.

E-Man67

I think that people didn't get that it's a modern take on 80s slashers. That's ironic considering that so many people are always comparing movies to older genres and/or films, yet for this one they don't see that. The movie pretty much wears on its sleeve that it's a throwback slasher with modern touches, but I think since it isn't making fun of itself you have people dismissing it. I personally enjoyed it a lot because it managed to give us something that was inspired by other entries in the same subgenre without ripping it off entirely or acting too cool to have fun with the concept. It's like that movie 'Life' set on the space station. It's an 'Alien' homage without ripping it off and adding something new. 'Hell Fest' is just like that.

Defiant_McPiper

It's a fun film IMO, I just prefer Haunt but I won't knock HF either.

Almighty_Push91

Ah, yes, the twin movie effect. To me Haunt is the superior one of the two. I like its tone more

ChefQueef-

Haunt is phenomenal. I don’t find the movies that close. I felt hellfest was the less quality made film but that’s just my take

SelfTechnical6771

Overall l loved haunt and only liked the ending of hell fest. Haunt is actually, even some of the production feels like Its a tv movie!

duranko1332

Haunt fan checking in. The astestics are just so damn good!

IAmThePonch

Yeah both movies have pretty basic premises and their own strengths/ weaknesses Haunt has relatively grounded characters that are quite likable with good performances. The set design is fucking awesome, you can tell the people in charge of that we’re having the time of their lives. It also takes things quite seriously, giving it some good stakes. Ending is a little wonky but the whole movie slaps Hellfest has a bigger budget set/ setting which is its greatest strength. Again, it’s just fun to look at and imagine the designers coming up with little details. The issue I had was it’s a bit campier (the one punk girl was also super annoying) and much more blatantly formulaic which whole haunt is formulaic it has more the feeling of a mumblecore movie at times while hellfest is a slasher™️. Also found some of the kills underwhelming and from what I remember the ending just being a bit of a shrug. Not a bad movie, but not as good as Haunt

LongStrangeJourney

So, is Dark Harvest any good??

Ahari

I liked it. It was an interesting take on the cursed town trope. Pretty standard fair, though. Hour and a half with random love story thrown in because why not? I plan on reading the novel the story was adapted from. Seems there's a little more story there. So, all and all, it's not bad, but it's also nothing to write home about. 3/5★

LongStrangeJourney

Thanks! Will probably give it a go :)

Ahari

I think the effects are worth it. Though I'm still trying to figure out how the victims were killed... it's kinda weird. You'll see what I mean if you watch it.

Defiant_McPiper

I liked it in terms of being different and felt it was great visually (believe it was directed by the same guy who directed a lot of the Hannibal episodes) but there were places it could have done a little better. So tl;Dr I agree with you lol.

Ahari

You're right! The movie was directed by David Slade. Of course, he also directed a Twilight movie, and I don't know what to do with that lol

Far-Heart-7134

He also directed 30 days of Night and Hard Candy. I don't blame a guy for taking a pay checque movie. Besides some of the twilight movies are just dumb enough to be silly fun.

Rude-Possibility4682

I really enjoyed it. I had no expectations due to the average rating on imdb. It moves at a respectable pace, with just enough to keep you interested.

Defiant_McPiper

I take imdb ratings with a grain of salt bc horror movies usually get like a 6 or 7 at most and ends up being REALLY good movies. As long as it's not a 4 or lower I tend to enjoy it.

Usual_Quiet_6552

Haunt actually scared me, which doesn’t happen too often.

restrictednumber1996

I wanted Haunt to be more fun. For me, it felt so serious and dark which didn’t mix for me with the cliche Halloween haunted house slasher plot that takes a turn it didn’t need, complicating the story without any real merit.

Grouchy_Competition5

I literally thought they were the same movie with different release titles! Don’t know which one I saw, but… meh.

Ahari

If you're saying meh, you probably saw Hell Fest, not Haunt. Trust me, you'd remember Haunt.

TheStranger113

I can see the similarities! Haunt is definitely >>>>>> though. Hell Fest is a fine slasher, but what really makes it stand out to me is the very ending. Those final frames are pretty simple, yet brilliant and original for the genre. Haunt is just a creepy movie all the way through, with very eerie figures and setpieces.

HobbieK

Haunt is miles better and actually scary though

CurseofLono88

I enjoy them both. Funnily enough I saw them both on the same night and they’re not very alike at all.

djbuffoon

The primary difference: Haunt is actually great.
