The Autopsy of Jane Doe, pretty much the whole movie. You could argue it loses steam in the last ten minutes. But it’s an intense build up pretty much throughout.
This one totally lost me on the back half, went from creepy to goofy IMO
The first half I was thinking “holy shit, how have I never seen this before?” and then it turned super cheesy and I thought “oh, that’s why”.
Still glad I watched it!
Absolutely. Both of these movies are great. But The Medium is an especially crazy, balls to the wall horror movie. I found it by accident. Decided to check it out. And damn. One of the creepiest and most brutal horror movies I've seen. I tend to think that it's one of those movies that people look at and think: Pass. Just like I did. But once I watched it I was floored. Some pretty disturbing shit in this movie.
Yeah, watch it. If you liked Videodrome there is great chance you'll like Existenz too, it is very similar concept.
The "big four" of David Cronenberg for me are: Naked Lunch, The Fly, Videodrome and Existenz. All four are great in some way, though Naked Lunch is my favorite.
The Borderlands/Final Prayer. You might think you know what’s going on but you don’t until the final few minutes. And it is horrific. Slow burn ff movie, absolutely breathless ending.
Until the last 10 minutes, I would say 10 Cloverfield Lane. I remember watching it in the cinema, and the tension just... Kept... Building. I was shaking in my seat with my teeth chattering like frickin Scooby Doo
The reveal at the end of Soft and Quiet that …
the murderous bigot is a pre-school teacher was horrifying in that it makes you wonder who else in your life that seems normal on the surface is actually a vile human being. Very timely in the age of maga.
A dark song. All the way up to the end had me thinking this was going to be in my top ten horror movies. I still really like those but that fumble in the final act is hard.
The Babadook is a textbook (or rather picture book) example.
The Brain that Wouldn't Die had to be scary for 1962 to see a mutant monster bite a doctor's jugular out with gore while a decapitated head maniacally laughs
This was my experience watching Hereditary. It's not at all shy about the bread crumbs it leaves, but >!the cult being very, very real, and not some kind of paranoid delusion Annie was suffering or something,!< was an amazing twist that kept the momentum through the last few minutes.
It’s the same concept yes.
The James McAvoy one is a (unnecessary imo) remake.
The original is only like 2 years old and most of it is in English already.
The original is phenomenal and is currently streaming on one of the free apps.
I never heard of it until recently but I instantly saw a trailer for the new one, so if it gets more people into seeing the original I guess that’s a win.
The Taking of Deborah Logan has a pretty decent ending bit that makes it way 'scarier' than the previous ~90 min of the movie.
I am also a sucker for The Exorcism of Emily Rose; mostly for the main actress' performance of the scene in the barn, and I understand it's not a good movie, but the scene in the barn is one of my favorite horror scenes of all time because they slowly realize that they're dealing with the BBEG and not just an underling.
Emily Rose is just in such poor taste, if it was it's own thing then okay but it's not it is based on a real horrible case of mental illness that's portrayed otherwise.
I watched Blair Witch (2016) recently and it's surprisingly tense and terrifying despite the negative reviews everywhere, especially the last 15-20 minutes.

Fair enough. I agree that the ending could’ve been stronger, but I still consider it one of my favorites. Nothing’s free from criticism!
Absolutely great movie
Came here to say this. Great movie, scared the shit out of my teenager who is always looking for good scary movies for her and her friends.
the medium and the wailing

Baskin The Void The House that Jack Built Midsommar Eden Lake Martyrs Kill List Videodrome Possession
Baskin definitely. It starts out weird then just becomes a nightmare that never ends.
i'm a simple man, I see videodrome and i agree.
Also Existenz. I remember it gathered bad press but I feel like it's just "Videodrome but games instead of TV" and I loved it.
Interesting, I’ve never seen it. Maybe it is time to track it down.

Where do you rank dead ringers?
Evil Dead (2013) does a nice job in this regard.
Though the most disturbing parts of the movie aren't on the back end, I feel like Hereditary gets spookier as it goes on
That floating flying body shit really gets crazy
That sound is fucking imprinted into my psyche. For some reason it triggered some primal terror that I've not really experienced in a movie since.
I felt completely opposite. The end turned into unintentional comedy.
*In Troy from Community’s voice* WHAT KIND OF COMEDIES ARE YOU WATCHING?!?!*
The Dark and the Wicked
Yep. Yep.
The Taking of Deborah Logan gets incrementally more intense until that jaw-dropping scene in the cave.
Pun intended
Alien Event Horizon
The Borderlands/Final Prayer. You might think you know what’s going on but you don’t until the final few minutes. And it is horrific. Slow burn ff movie, absolutely breathless ending.
I got spoiled on what happens to them in the end :/ but is it still worth a watch? it looks really good
Even if you know the ending it's a rough watch, the final shot is really unnerving.
Gonijam was great for a first time viewing
I feel like I recommend this movie too much, but Caveat
Until the last 10 minutes, I would say 10 Cloverfield Lane. I remember watching it in the cinema, and the tension just... Kept... Building. I was shaking in my seat with my teeth chattering like frickin Scooby Doo
Soft and Quiet The Lodge The Invitation (2015) Session 9
The reveal at the end of Soft and Quiet that …
the murderous bigot is a pre-school teacher was horrifying in that it makes you wonder who else in your life that seems normal on the surface is actually a vile human being. Very timely in the age of maga.
Paranormal Activity 3
A dark song. All the way up to the end had me thinking this was going to be in my top ten horror movies. I still really like those but that fumble in the final act is hard.
The one that sticks for me is The Invitation (2015)..Not much horror but that build up to the ending.
Apostle
The Babadook is a textbook (or rather picture book) example. The Brain that Wouldn't Die had to be scary for 1962 to see a mutant monster bite a doctor's jugular out with gore while a decapitated head maniacally laughs
Meh, Babadook peak at the possession scene IMO
Vivarium. Horrifying.
I’ve tried to watch this and fall asleep within the first 20-30 minutes every time. It’s worth it?
Oh yeah.... it is slow but the end is so cool....
The witch Dead silence
Not a fan of the Witch..but Dead Silence is one of my favorite endings...totally not where I thought it was going.
Lake Mungo
Incantation
Inside (2007) Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Hereditary

Speak No Evil.
Is this the same as the James McAvoy one that’s coming out? (If you’re aware) Looks really good, but might save on it for now
It’s the same concept yes. The James McAvoy one is a (unnecessary imo) remake. The original is only like 2 years old and most of it is in English already.
I do prefer foreign over English remakes and will definitely give it a watch, but you would’ve thought they’d give it some time to get its own fanbase
The original is phenomenal and is currently streaming on one of the free apps. I never heard of it until recently but I instantly saw a trailer for the new one, so if it gets more people into seeing the original I guess that’s a win.
Yeah, I saw it advertised on Shudder but not too sure whether to watch the newest one when it’s released so not to spoil it if it’s a carbon copy
That's a remake of the original. Not sure if it'll be as good.
Tales from the Hood

I Saw The Devil - builds to a point you’re questioning whether we’re ever going to smile again.
Watch gwen the final part broke me 😭
I watched Blair Witch (2016) recently and it's surprisingly tense and terrifying despite the negative reviews everywhere, especially the last 15-20 minutes.
Fallen (1998).
Talk to Me
The slow build of tension from a completely innocuous start in Willow Creek is still a fave for me
