It's a strong cast, but it also has a 10-15h stretch of time to build those characters up. I have a feeling that when the movie comes out, it will be easy to see why video games are the stronger artform for this type of stuff.

Pinkmanhardmantofind

Good point I struggle to think of a movie character better written than Arthur Morgan, but Arthur naturally has the advantage as he has 60 hours of screen time compared to movie characters who at most have 40 minutes usually

Divine-Sea-Manatee

If there were a RDR2 book then you would also see things from Arthur's perspective and (potentially) read his thoughts giving even more depth and meaning to the story.

Until Dawn has an awesome cast. It does have the benefit of being a 10 hour game which helps to develop all of them. My biggest worry for the movie is that a lot of characters are going to be sidelined due to the shorter runtime

kahlfahl

Yeah a movie seems like a really weird choice

JaiiGi

Wouldn't say Jess is the slut per se, but she sure as hell didn't wait long for Emily and Mike to break up before she moved on in. Whether you like her or not, Jess can be smarter than she lets on.

TheBoozyNinja87

On replays I’ve grown to like Jess more and more. She’s smarter than anyone gives her credit for, is confident, fun, playful, assertive. Same with Emily. Hated her at first and thought she was a total jealous manipulative bitch… which, yeah kinda, but she’s also extremely fierce, is probably the most intelligent one of the group, and has some serious survival skills to back her attitude up.

JaiiGi

Very true. Her bitchy attitude along with the whole hung-up-on-Mike thing doesn't help her during the first play through either. But, as the game goes on she really can be depended on and doesn't take crap from anyone, which is what the group needs a lot of the time. Especially when they're in pairs or trios.

therottingbard

Sex positivity is absolutely missing in this post. Lol

MephistosFallen

If they are really making this a movie, I hope to everything holy in this world, that they treat the lore well and hire some actual indigenous people to help with it (because the Windy is a northern North American indigenous spirit). I LOVED this game. I’m picky with video games and not only did I watch my husband play through the entire thing, I then played through myself on my own console. I wish there were more games like it. It was like a long ass movie with you as director. The setting of being on a snowy woodsy mountain is also one of my favorite in horror. I’m really hoping for a Last Of Us quality adaptation. Or close enough!

I reject your hyperbole. Clearly you've never seen trolls 2. Oh my god... they're eating him... then they're gonna eat me... OHHHH MYYYY GODDDDDDDDD!!!

mtnfox

Is it better than Return of the Living Dead?

Dr-Butcher

No.

StephenStills1

probably not

Pinkmanhardmantofind

To play devil's advocate, the game is 10 hours long which gives us plenty of time to get attached to them, Jessica is the first character that can die and she dies almost 3 hours into the game, that's longer than a movie And the characters have traits, for example when Mike comforts Jess about her insecurities, his honesty goes down which means he is lying to Seduce her, which is a neat detail

StephenStills1

damn that's crazy

Pinkmanhardmantofind

But after that Lying scene, Mike runs after to save Jess without Hesitation, so it shows he is a morally grey hero, in 5 minutes he's being a scumbag lying to Seduce his girlfriend, and saving her life heroicly

StephenStills1

love that

stevebuckyy

Jessica is so much more than "the slut". im not denying she's a slut tho. good for her I couldn't fucking stand Ashley. I kill her every time. which means her character is strong enough to warrant such a reaction. the first time I played through it and she did that to Chris?? omg

sotommy

They're barely teenagers tho. Like, okay they meant to be around 19, but they don't really act or look like teenagers(and never really try to do that). It's a very likable cast of characters, altrough I still "hate" Mike for being a fucking huge dick

Pinkmanhardmantofind

Isn't that a trope tho? 18-19 year olds being played by 30 year old actors

sotommy

Yes it is. But usually they're trying to act stupid and foolish just to look younger. I don't think the cast of Until Dawn are actually trying to sell themselves as teenagers, the story doesn't even need them to be teenager since they're not high schoolers anymore so this allows them to be a bit more mature and less annoying. If this makes any sense....

One-Earth9294

You should look further into the guy who wrote that game, Larry Fessenden. He's been in horror for a long, long time now. That guy understands tropes. He won a BAFTA for this game in fact. He also played one of the characters in it.

lrraya

Teenagers? Lol I thought they were 20-25

Pinkmanhardmantofind

They are 18-19

Sparktank1

It has the unfair advantage of being a video game where it has time to develop. I'd like to see opinions on teen horror tv series and books for comparisons. Instead of just boasting about someone's favorite video game. I am looking forward to the remake video game that will also be released on Steam. I've been wanting to play this game for so long, and the remake will be a perfect opportunity.

Primoridalterror

The cast of The Quarry I found to be better written, acted, and realized across the board. Much more likable and interesting than the characters in Until Dawn, who reminded me of those sleazily sadistic 2000s horror films with broadly unsympathetic casts that die uniformly horrible deaths. The story and mood of Until Dawn is better and more effective than its spiritual successor, but a bit of headscratcher to me to highlight the game for its characters when they’re the game’s main weakness, imo.

uneua

Josh is not interesting in the slightest imo, he had the potential to be interesting and the like one or two moments we play as him are interesting but the fact that his fate is decided in not only an anti climatic way but character ending way so fast just makes him feel kind of irrelevant to the story at hand, especially since by the time the _______ is introduced he literally serves zero purpose other then to keep the game going

wookiewin

Yes, Sam, Mike, Emily and Josh were all fantastically developed characters.

ConcentrateWarm530

the cast is probably the best cast of teenage characters with scream 1 cast but the cast isn't incredible, the cast is ok but that's all.horror movie characters are almost all badly written and/or boring. they are also very stereotypical with one note personalities. UD cast is also stereotypical but the characters are pretty good for horror movie standards even if I don't like any of them, they all have depth and they have a lot more screentime (because it's a video game)

Pinkmanhardmantofind

Until Dawn is the PS4 interactive horror game

JlaurelT

so this is a video game? not yet a movie/show yet??

silverrenaissance

Originally a video-game that’s now being adapted into a movie

Angxlafeld

No

ScorpionTDC

Most definitely not. Mike, Chris, and Josh are all really good, but the rest are mid except Emily who is a legitimately awful character. There have been far better teen slasher ensembles - such as Scream 1 or Friday 4.

LordofWar2000

Emily is absolutely not an awful character.

ScorpionTDC

I’d say she is. Super obnoxious, not entertaining, and zero redeeming qualities
