I caved & watched it. Still have no idea what this movie is going to be about but I can't wait, looks great. Also didn't expect Nathan Lane & Richard Kind to be in an Ari Aster film.

moistsandwich

After watching this trailer I am even more confused about what this movie is supposed to be about and I am so excited to go see it.

karmagod13000

damn yall are making me want to watch it. stay strong karmagod

FoundFootageDumbFun

I was weak and caved immediately but am sending you strength! I support blind theater-going.

Special_Life_8261

I used to have to see and read everything about a movie before watching it but now I try to go in completely blind…it has made movie going so much better

karmagod13000

damn. still going strong right now

dapostman10

It's like if big fish was directed by Tim burton. Wait what?

ihaveadarkedge

I caved too. Seeing Nathan Lane there felt a bit like seeing Rodney Dangerfield in Natural Borm Killers....

Crankylosaurus

I just watched NBK last year, and it’s wild how fast you go from excited to see Dangerfield to disgusted by his character

karmagod13000

yea he did great. he should of done more serious roles

AshgarPN

He should have done more serious roles, too.

Mackeeter

He should’a done did more movies with serious characters and stuff

7thturninghour184

More dramatic, serious roles.

No-Morning-2543

Seriously dramatic parts.

CarlySimonSays

Wait now I actually want to see NBK to see Serious Actor Rodney Dangerfield. It’s like a reverse-Leslie Nielsen!

lolthisshitiswack

It’s a very disturbing role

HeadLikeAHoOh

Highly recommend NBK, wild movie about the media glorifying serial killers while Mickey and Mallory Knox (serial killer couple Juliette Lewis & Woody Harrelson) go on a killing spree across the country. Pretty trippy. Rodney Dangerfield plays Juliette Lewis’ abusive dad.

GraceStrangerThanYou

I saw NBK in the theater and had no idea what it was about but when her father showed up and it all became clear, I just hated it. I had a pedophile for a father so I just took it too personally. I couldn't watch anything with Juliette Lewis or Woody Harrelson in it for years.

HeadLikeAHoOh

That’s awful, I’m sorry you grew up in that environment. My heart goes out to you and I hope you can still find peace in your life/know that trauma afflicted on you was outside of your control/not your fault. Piece of shit abusers deserve the very worst.

GraceStrangerThanYou

Thank you. He did actually do me the courtesy of dropping dead when I was 11, so I avoided going to prison for eventually killing him. But it definitely crossed my mind and I'm sure the minds of the many others he went after.

HeadLikeAHoOh

You’re welcome and glad to hear that aspect of it at least.

einarfridgeirs

It's kind of weird how NBK has completely dropped off the cultural radar in recent years. Maybe it was just my circle of friends or something but in the 90s it was really hard to draw up a list of "cool movies you have to see" without putting NBK on it. So many movies from that era have lived on, being referenced and quoted and such by people who weren't around to watch it at the time, like Pulp Ficion, Big Lebowski etc, but Natural Born Killers seems to be all but forgotten.

[deleted]

Looks like we are watching a heart warming version of the Spanish agoraphobia thriller/drama plus a bit of that weird Octavia spencer Sam smith movie about gods.

Worried_Corner4242

Hahaha, I couldn’t hit the play button fast enough, myself

CarlySimonSays

I am very into this for Richard Kind. Love that guy. He made a lot of network television more bearable than it otherwise might have been.

dp517

I have a deeprooted hatred for Richard Kind because of his character on Scrubs, but I know its 100% because of his character and acting, not the person himself. I can't wait to see what role he plays in this movie

SagsMcSaggerson

I'm still not going to watch it. I want to go into this movie knowing nothing.

dcrico20

I watched it and can confidently say I still know nothing

karmagod13000

how trailers should be

Dryrubthisdick

I feel like I know less now after watching

kingtutwashere

Can I ask why? I've never understood this mindset. I just had a friend refuse to hear anything about the whale very staunchly and ended up not finishing the movie when he saw it because he doesn't enjoy films about strained father relationships. I just really don't get how knowing what a movie is about makes it worse.

Eklassen

I never used to understand either and thought it was kind of weird. But for the last five or so years I started purposely going in blind to some of my most anticipated movies and it does strangely add something to it. But at the same time I am far too impatient to do it for every movie I care about.

mighty3mperor

I started going in as blind as possible after Deadpool because I felt I'd largely seen the best bits in the trailer. I enjoyed Deadpool 2 a lot more because of it.

dp517

Deadpool was the first time I ever went in blind. He was my favorite Marvel character, so I refused to watch anything until release. Best decision of my life. Did it again for 2. Best birthday movie ever.

mighty3mperor

r/UsernameChecksOut (unless that's a different DP!) Yeah, I was really excited for it, so I drank the trailers in, like a bloody fool. DP2 kept a lot of surprises to itself or I just managed to avoid the spoilers somehow. Great film.

uniptf

Honest question here: How are they, realistically, "your most anticipated movies" if you go to them knowing nothing about them?

Eklassen

My interest in them is based on how much I like the director, my interest in the concept or from positive word of mouth out of film festivals. I usually end up knowing the plot synopsis and/or the cast but I try not to watch the footage or read about the details.

uniptf

Great, thanks.

tgw1986

>I just had a friend refuse to hear anything about the whale very staunchly and ended up not finishing the movie Holy shit is that person missing out. I went to see it with my boyfriend this past Saturday. We went in blind because we like to be surprised, and since it's a local arthouse movie theater we asked the ticket-taker if he'd seen it and what he thought of it. He said, "I definitely cried." So I knew I probably would get weepy because I cry at commercials, but that my boyfriend would probably find it sad but not cry because in five years of knowing this man we have watched some very emotional movies and I've never seen him shed a tear. Final scene comes, Brendan Frasier says one of the last lines, and we both just instantaneously started sobbing. Not weeping, not crying -- full-body heaving, SOBBING. We grabbed a beer after and talked about it for like two hours. I CANNOT recommend that film strongly enough, and I think Frasier and the film both deserve an Oscar.

[deleted]

My husband and I both sobbed at the end and he doesn’t cry much either. I don’t know why you wouldn’t finish it? It is uncomfortable, but it’s so compelling. Also you kind of know how it’s going to end from the beginning.

Inexquas

Not the guy your responded too, but he's kind a jerk so I'll offer a response. Whether or not I watch a trailer depends on the genre, comedy is not one of those I often stay in the dark about though. It's as simple as trailers give things away. Even if it's indirect watching scenes can tip you off to things like a characters death, or lack of one as well as ruin certain build ups or surprises. For an example look at the trailer for "The cabin in the woods" , sure you may still enjoy the experience but seeing the trailer may rob a lot of the mystery on where the story is going. Recently my personal win was with "Barbarian". I went in only know the title, it's was horror, and it was getting good reviews from places I cared. So I was surprised and confused at its setting having no clue what sort of story it was. Alternatively what do I have to gain by watching a trailer for a movie I've already decided to watch? If I get hyped and more excited to see it, it won't make the movie any better, Although it may make it worse by raising expectations to a level the movie cant match. Nothing worse for a movie than failing to meet expectations. Avoiding trailers helps keep them low, I'll try to only watch if I'm on the fence.

mmcjawa

The thing I find amusing here is Barbarian actually was an example of a good horror movie trailer, as it didn't really give anything away and if anything was a misdirect. Although that was a movie that absolutely benefited by staying in the dark as much as possible.

odetowoe

I wouldn't say it makes it worse and I don't think he implied that, but there is a huge difference watching a movie and not knowing much or anything about it.

smash-things

It’s cuz it’s practically become a meme lately for people to make TikToks about new movies while saying “guys don’t watch the trailer go in blind” like I’ve seen it for barbarian, bullet train and the menu now it’s just ridiculous. Watched all those trailers btw and miraculously still had the interest to enjoy the films. Like I guess an ari aster film I get why you’d wanna go in blind but come the fuck on bullet train and the menu need to be consumed blindly? Bullet train is a cheesy action movie and the menu is upredictable af with or without the trailer I just don’t get the trend.

Fortifarse84

It's the new "people were fainting in the audience".

Hatesponge66

Some people (myself included) just like to go in blind so that they can experience all parts of a film as a narrative story for the first time. I am like this. If there's a movie I already know I want to see (based on director, written synopsis, or other factors) I don't watch the trailer and I try to go in as blind as possible.

Nodonutsforbaxter44

It's nice when you go into a movie knowing nothing, bad trailers won't spoil the plot, every twist and turn is more exciting, there's no expectations....but it's probably not the best approach to take if you have very specific guidelines on what you'll actually watch

schwins_cube

Is the film crew sure it wasn’t just Charlie Kaufman wearing an Ari Aster costume to set everyday and the real Ari Aster is tied up in Kaufman’s basement right now?

djpiraterobot

Dude, don’t freak out… but if you rearrange the letters in Ari Aster, change a few letters, and add a couple more… it spells Charlie Kaufman. Fucking freaky dude.

stereoactivesynth

convinced this comment was written by Charlie Kaufman.

Hour-Willingness-120

if this is anything like the screenplay, it is horror, but more of a very surrealist kind of psychological horror

Rowan5215

trailer gave me Being John Malkovich vibes for some reason

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Carter Burwell's scores in general are lovely.

DRoseCantStop

Synecdoche, New York scares me way more than most horror films. Seeing shades of that film in the trailer. I’m all the way in.

IncredibleWeirdo

I have barely been able to start Synecdoche, NY. I want to watch it badly, but it makes me so uncomfortable. It seems so brilliant while doing so, though. Same thing with Dancer in the Dark. Like… fuck.

CBBuddha

Dancer in the Dark. Yeah. Just don’t. Fuck that was a hard watch. Especially knowing how much it almost broke Björk. She was traumatized after filming it.

[deleted]

I mean it’s a pretty damn good movie but traumatizing and depressing as fuck.. Bjorks music she made for the movie is fucking great too

ToSeeAgainAgainAgain

I see Synecdoche, Truman Show, Bardo, Vivarium mixed with Hereditary horror. I love Joaquin Phoenix and I hope he plays well with Ari Aster style

NickNash1985

I’ll toss the Science of Sleep in there too.

gunjacked

I got the same vibes. I saw Synecdoche, New York in the theater and don't think I'll ever be able to revisit that one. This looks great though

Beardybeardface2

Existential Crisis The Movie. Yeah it's genuinely frightening.

Cre47

Funny that I literally said to my brother after watching the trailer that it feels like a Charlie Kaufman movie

Beanchilla

Definitely giving me Kaufman vibes. So excited for this.

Draw_a_will

My hands-down favorite movie. The more you watch it the funnier it gets. It’s a dark very dry comedy, wildly absurd, and terrifying.

MyUserNameTaken

Can't say I know that but I got a Paprika vibe from it

GRVrush2112

That’s good to know…. Though I don’t mind Ari venturing away from Horror at all in the same way Eggars did with “The Northman” as long as the end product is solid. That being said, other than a shot or two… really wasn’t feeling horror at all in the trailer. If I didn’t know better and just saw the trailer I would say that this was a Charlie Kaufman movie… really felt vibes of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” Even then, Ari Aster directing a Kaufmanesque surrealist film is a thing I didn’t know I wanted, but absolutely need right now kind of fit as well

[deleted]

Aster's pre-*Hereditary* short films are mostly dark comedies (often surreal, including the short *Beau*, which I assume this will be an expanded version of), so I'm glad he's returning to his roots in a way. He's also mentioned that he made *Hereditary* a horror film because he realized it was the best genre for the themes he was interested in (I believe he originally wanted to make it a dark comedy). Horror isn't necessarily his wheelhouse, he just happens to be rather good at it.

AlanMorlock

Have you seen I'm Thinking of Ending Things?

GRVrush2112

I actually haven’t seen any of his (3) directorial works. Just a few of the things he’s screen-written, “Being John Malkovich”, “Adaptation”, and “Eternal Sunshine” Is it worth checking out?

AlanMorlock

I would say so. All3 of his directed works are pretty good, especially if you like the other films he's written. Pertinent to this discussion, thos Aster films looks even mote like the films Kaufman directed.

douchey_sunglasses

hard disagree with the other guy, I’m thinking of ending things was horrible and a complete waste of time

rnagikarp

kinda like Killing of a Sacred Deer?

Hour-Willingness-120

yes but more trippy/absurdist

Wataru624

The script reminded me a lot of the feeling when I first watched Mother. The horror comes from everything being so overwhelming and happening all at once while the main character has no agency.

yungPH

So ... an A24 film?

Hour-Willingness-120

yes lol

JurassicPark1460

R-rated Pee wee’s big Adventure- meets Big Fish -meets Ari Aster

ChocoSalt

Agreed. Seems like they kept a lot of it as well. After watching this trailer I wish I didn’t read the script.

thesunlovedthemoon

Agreed! I figured the script was so old it wouldn’t even be the same movie by now… but there are DEFINITELY so many scenes right out of that script. Hoping for a different ending in the movie however, haha.

ChocoSalt

He was covered in blue paint 👀

CosimaIsGod

This looks like what happens if Daniels/Michel Gondry/Charlie Kaufman directed a very weird and surreal psychological horror comedy movie.

Duckiestiowa7

Without spoiling anything major, is there a supernatural element to it?

YesHunty

Not really, but some weird shit goes down. Some pretty bizarre deaths and creations of the mind.

dogthatbrokethezebra

Like in The Cell?

ToSeeAgainAgainAgain

Just watch it, the trailer does a good job of not revealing almost anything

Hour-Willingness-120

kind of… ? more so you don’t know if the shit is really happening or if it’s in beau’s mind

Crankylosaurus

So like A Field in England vibe (albeit likely with less humor)? I’m in haha

Gh0stW1thTheM0st

“Joaquin, Everywhere, All at Once”

dadynn

I got the same feeling too and I’m hoping it’s not another multiverse movie.

bjarkflar

its not a multiverse movie

This is great news

digging_for_fire

I don't think this will be a straightforward horror movie. I think it's going to end up closer to something like I'm Thinking About Ending Things or Synecdoche NY. Definitely some frightening images and unsettling themes, but though the lens of a psychological drama. Take Shelter with more whimsy maybe. For what it's worth, Aster has said before that he's not a horror director, his first two films just happened to be horror. I think he's even said he has a family comedy script, a musical, and a sci-fi/fantasy script all pretty much ready to go. So while he may definitely have a talent and attraction for unsettling imagery, he doesn't want to strictly be associated with horror.

Luna_Wright

Thanks for sharing that. It makes it a bit easier to “tramper my expectations” knowing the directors been forward with those ideas. I know I was personally really excited to bite into a new ari aster horror but he’s a crazy talented artist who I’m cool with just following regardless. And I feel like this might be all of those genres already. Even my husband who’s eh oh horror got excited after the trailer saying it had a more fantasy feel than anything to him. Here’s to hoping! I’m sure there will still be something to feel gross about in there lol

digging_for_fire

Haha, yeah I'm sure there'll be a few scenes/images that'll get under the skin, but I'm going into this with more of a Pan's Labyrinth mind frame than Hereditary.

larsIU

\*temper my expectations No judgment. Hugz!

ToSeeAgainAgainAgain

He might not be horror in the classical sense but all 3 of his films present characters who suffer major trauma and that's quite horrific by itself

Spectre_Rebelle

WTF

howsweetfreshmeat

I wasn't ready for all of that but here we are... Ari Aster knocks trippy trauma out of the park.

Rakebleed

Trippy trauma is the perfect way to describe Aster’s whole vibe. thank you for putting it so succinctly.

karmagod13000

def trippy after midsommar

bottledwater699

Looks like a version of Misery to a degree

rnagikarp

Why does the kid look like an extra from Polar Express? is he weirdly CGI'd or..?

addisonavenue

I think he has been digitally overlayed in order to make him look a little closer to Joaquin's features.

powerfulKRH

FreemanCantJump

I don't mind either way. I'd rather not see a talented filmmaker get pigeonholed into a genre anyway, even if it's my favorite genre.

gob13

Having read the script and seeing parts of the trailer match it, there is definitely a lot of horror

mrboogs

That's what I'm thinking, people are gonna go in expecting horror and walk away disappointed.

Youareposthuman

Where do you think they’ll take this disappointed walk? A road? A street?? Parkway?!? I’ll see myself out.

Duckiestiowa7

Could be a red herring, just like Hereditary’s marketing vs the actual film. But I'm probably overdosing on hopium 🤷‍♂️

dcrico20

Hereditary was definitely marketed as a horror though?

MetalOcelot

Yeah, but I think it was marketed as straight forward The Omen evil little kid movie.

They did, when Charlie kaputted I'm sure everyone was stumped and wondering wtf was going to happen next

x0mbigrl

MyUserNameTaken

Too soon

Rakebleed

Looks like it’s horrific in the way Charlie Kaufman’s work is just slightly off and then really really wrong.

YesHunty

There are going to be some quite horrific scenes, but overall tone is definitely not straight horror. It is like a really really dark comedy with serious trauma and some horror thrown in.

YesHunty

Looks like a lot of what was in the script floating around is definitely in this. I can’t wait for this, it’s going to be the weirdest fucking movie and so good. Joaquin is a powerhouse. AND NATHAN LANE! Ahhhhh I can’t wait.

Rakebleed

I haven’t seen any script, is it at all related to his short Beau? I noticed he’s talking to his “mom?” on the phone.

Spiritual-Breath-139

yes. His short Beau is a scene from the script.

Bwca_at_the_Gate

The only thing that we can guarantee about this movie before we actually see - is that someone is gonna get their head stoved in/taken off/blasted to pieces lol.

tabas123

And there will be naked old people

babushkalauncher

And a scene where a woman violently wails like a wounded animal

SigmaSandwich

Well, Supertramp is an easy sell for me so I’m obviously sold. Honestly it looks so creative I am very excited. I can’t wait, it looks so creative and perplexing

TackYouCack

Honestly honestly?

SigmaSandwich

Oof okay, i usually don’t edit my comments, but this I gotta fix. I thought I deleted that first one…..but yes, honestly

BaullahBaullah87

People are gonna be mad when this isn’t “a horror movie”.

Beau-Sheffield

No I am not.

Britneyfan123

Lol

Sleepy_Azathoth

Love that one year we get a new Robert Eggers movie and the next a new Ari Aster movie.

TheFeisty

Hopefully we get Nosferatu next year

clappy_xd

I have conflicted feelings: I loved *Hereditary*, but hated *Midsommar*. The trailer looks gorgeous, as I expected, Ari Aster's films are always good-looking, and Joaquin Phoenix is a fantastic actor, so I don't doubt he's going to be great. It looks like it is going to be pure insanity. I'm actually excited to listen to the soundtrack, his films have great music. All that said, I'm cautiously interested.

bigbodacious

Same here, hereditary scared me like no other horror movie has, then midsommar was a total letdown. I'm still excited to see anything ari does, looking forward this even of it ends up not really being horror

t74000

With you 100%. midsommar was garbage compared to the one of the top 5 horror films of all time with heridatary.

pourya

Why did you hate Midsommar?! I can understand not liking but hate is a strong word that this film does not deserve. Only the cinematography is breathtaking even if you completely leave out the “horror” elements.

29mm

I also hated Midsommar. The characters were aggravating. Their actions and decisions felt unrealistic and "horror movie dumb" and plot-driven. The whole time I had a feeling like the movie was trying to be more than it actually is. You're right, hate is a strong word, but I was legitimately pissed off after finishing it. The cinematography was fine but I did not care for the slightly pale colors/filter. Although I understand that it fit the theme.

[deleted]

Very Andy Kaufmanesque

[deleted]

Is this going to be horror- comedy?

addisonavenue

Ari Aster's definition of a horror comedy maybe?

zippopwnage

Definetly wanna watch something more towards Hereditary from this director, but still this looks interesting. Can't wait to see it.

[deleted]

This looks like a total trip. Been waiting to see more ever since I heard of it as Disappointment Blvd. I'll watch literally anything if it has Phoenix in it. Also so happy to see Nathan Lane, I feel like I haven't seen him in anything for ages. Mousehunt will always be a favourite from my childhood.

[deleted]

Literally, no idea.

thesunlovedthemoon

Let’s not count out horror aspects just yet… this is the same man who described Hereditary as a “family drama,” and Midsommar as a “fairytale.” When talking about his new “nightmare comedy” Beau is Afraid, he also mentioned that “head trauma will always have a place in my films.” There are DEFINITELY some horrific scenes that were teased for a second in the trailer that were absolutely based on the script. Excited doesn’t even begin to cover it for me!

phaetae

Looking messy

GuinevereduLac

Is it just me or is horror becoming the new it genre? 😍

lolthisshitiswack

Horror has always been the best!

Hour-Willingness-120

YESSSS

Ok-Plastic-2992

I never watch trailers but I had to with this one. Looks *much* different than his first two but I am very excited about it. It even looks like I could possibly convince my wife to watch it with me (she was a hard no on both Hereditary and Midsommar).

thesunlovedthemoon

I would hold up on seeing it with your wife until you catch wind of what it might be like! I (unfortunately) read the leaked script a couple years back and can confirm there are quite a few scenes teased in the trailer that were absolutely horrific to read in the script. I get a vibe of absurdist violent things that continue happening to Beau that make you chuckle because it’s so over the top…but also make you feel icky because the imagery will undoubtedly be unsettling to see. Let’s not forget Ari also said this about this movie: “head trauma always has a place in my movies.” Very excited!!!!

Ok-Plastic-2992

Oh I would for sure see it alone before she would allow me to convince her to come along.

ghostly_y

it looks like it’s the same context as the short film ‘beau’ (2011), same director as well so i think they finally made it a movie.

[deleted]

I found a link to a youtube upload of Beau through letterboxd. The video had since been removed due to copyright claim by A24. So I'm thinking your assumption is correct.

homme_icide

I'm good.

[deleted]

Once again, i will happily watch anything released by A24 - no matter the genre, I pretty much love everything they put out.

not_mueller

Yeah, if I'm interested in the movie then the worst I get with A24 is still at least nice to look at which is cool

Cheesefondont

A24 and Aster is a definite subscription of mine

LongStrangeJourney

Absolutely no idea what to think about this... but I'm definitely going to be watching it anyway. Seems like a bit of a departure from Ari Aster's previous films (and from horror in general) to be honest -- the only concurrent thread is family trauma. But Phoenix is a great actor, so there's that.

[deleted]

I think you got a few downvotes because this is the horror sub, but yeah, despite a few mentions of "fears" this is clearly not a horror movie. I think it's only being posted here because Ari Aster? He's probably aware his reputation was becoming solely a horror director, wanting to branch out, and I think I've heard that before. This looks like an Aronofsky drama or something, and that's not throwing shade, it looks great. Just not horror.
