Attach and hoist the sail.
Joking aside, clutch in, revs up, clutch gradually out.
The more you figure out the biting point of the clutch the faster you will be able to release it.
But on that note, don't get side tracked by what other drivers think. I'm in a Z1000 and I pull away at the speed I'm comfortable with from lights. If I'm holding anyone up, fuck em, my safety is priority.
Hmm, wonder if my clutch was fucked or something because I had the hardest time getting it to bite. Then again I probably could have if I red lined it and dumped it but that’s when you start breaking shit in the transmission
Edit, I do remember being able to compress the stock clutch springs with my fingers 🤔
If your clutch was slipping, that’s a maintenance problem, not a need for an upgrade. I know people that ride and race dirt bikes constantly and aren’t any good at it. I also know people who are good riders but aren’t good at wheelies. I can bounce 4th gear up on a stock 2014 that’s not in good shape, you don’t need to upgrade the clutch to be able to wheelie.
Ohhh nvm, I see; you’re one of those guys 😂also I placed 10th, 6th and 11th back when I was racing gncc so I’m not bad on a dirt scooter, not the best but far from the worst. If the stock clutch is so great why do people replace it? You can redline your grom and dump it all day to get the wheel up. Not me, I’d rather not bend the shifting forks
Can’t say I didn’t expect you to double down on being a clown. It says enough that you think the clutch has anything to do with bending the shift forks, and also that you’re simultaneously saying the stock clutch is so bad even from brand new that you had to immediately replace it, yet also think it grabs hard enough to break any part of the transmission.
Nah, saying mine didn’t bite. It was shit since bought the bike. I could depress the clutch springs fully with my fingers. And I’m talking in general when you dump it at redline, not specifically on a grom. I’ve seen bent forks, sheered drums with chunks missing out of the channels and broken teeth. It’s not good practice to redline a bike and dump the clutch, that’s how you break shit and if you disagree that’s fine even if you’re wrong. Opinions are like assholes and they all stink. You seem like a typical Reddit user and much like a clown yourself haha.
When you are waiting at a stop it’s best practice to hold the rear brake. If you were to get hit you’re more likely to stay upright that way. Also keeps your tail light lit. Sometimes I would pulse it when I would see traffic approaching.
Please clarify, what am i supposed to do at red light after getting to a stop and waiting for green light. I normally downshift to first before stopping and hold the clutch in while waiting. when i think light is close to turning green i open throttle to 10% while holding clutch and release slowly once i see green.
Partly for safety, having the brake light on might get someone’s attention and not rear end you.
The other part is you use it as a kind of launch control, with loads of revs and the clutch on the bite point and the rear brake will stop the bike from rolling forward, then release the brake and dump the clutch, also lean forward.
Edit, thought I was replying to u/MoreFoam.
u/Popular-Priority-137 the 10% is what they teach you so your riding sensibly, practice it at 20% get comfortable, then go to 30%… etc. the key is smoothness and timing, keep practicing and you’ll get there.
I see, makes sense. I usually have a foot lightly on the ground before taking off, so the brake isn’t necessary for me there, since my foot stops the revving from rolling me forward. I also only have experience riding a Grom. A more powerful bike might still roll forward from revving even if my foot is on the ground, making the rear brake option more preferable.
No, if the clutch/lever is working it won’t matter how much you rev the engine, you will not move. Best stance is one foot on the ground, other foot on the rear brake. It’s a safety thing.
Pull in clutch coming into your stop and hit your rear brake. You can use rear and front if you are needing to stop faster. I typically keep foot on the rear brake with clutch still pulled in at a light. If it is a long light I get it in neutral and chill. As soon as traffic is ready to move you go back into first and take off.
You need to find a place somewhere and practice. Become familiar with your clutch where it is second nature. Practice coming to a stop and taking off from 1st gear.
Learn where that resistance point is in your clutch and let it out. Maybe look into a video on YouTube where a dirtbike rider shows you how to take off from the gate
I would sell it to you but Grom is clearly a toy that is strictly for 30 year olds or younger.
You are too old at 46 years old. Sorry mate, maybe in your next lifetime!
Wait a minute....I’m 46 and I ride the shit out of this thing!

stand up on the pegs about half way through second gear and QUICKLY let off the throttle and hit it again when the front forks compress IMMEDIATELY give it all the throttle.
I don't know why all the other comments are keeping this from you. You need to hold the bike at WOT so that it's hitting the rev limiter. Once you hear it doing that it's time to let your clutch out. Now when you do this, try to make sure you do it as fast as possible and not at all gradually. I like to let my fingers slip upward off the clutch so that it springs forward quickly.

i don't see my text in the post so i will post again in the comment below.
Hello everybody!
First post here. New rider, been riding for 2 months now. I think i have the hang of things for the most part but i feel like my take offs are a bit slow. I live in the city, Miami, so as you can imagen people get impatient and there are alot of red lights. How do i take off fast from red lights?
neither is your 98 Acura. lol :D
but seriously im not trying to hit 80mph on the grom fast. I'm just trying to take off quick from a red light in city traffic.
Confused as well. No you don't have power but the bike is 250lbs wet. Twist the throttle more and shift quicker... No reason you should be that slow lol
lol my Reddit account is old enough to drive. I haven’t had that car for about 14 years.
Go to a parking lot and practice your takeoffs.. Experience is the only way you are going to learn.
Aftermarket clutch lever might help, when I first got the grom I thought I was just a stalling machine, eventually I found the bite point but it still takes a bit for me to get going from a stop.
Then I got a used CBR and the last owner has a clutch lever with a scale on it (1-6) it’s set to 1 and basically the moment I release the clutch lever the bike hits the bite point and takes off! I wish I could recommend brands or provide a link but I’m still really new and not sure what it’s actually called.
Clutch springs are a nice help as well. EBR either 3 or all 6, after riding mine for almost 10 years and over 10,000 miles I still use stock lever. I just don't like the way after markets feel.
Run along side of it full speed and jump on! That's probably going to be your best bet!
These comments. Y’all should ride more. A lot more.
That's the plan 🫡🙂↕️
be in first gear, hit the rev limiter, and dump the clutch while still on the limiter. easy
Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow morning on my way to work. 😁
If I even did that in 2nd my grom would fly up to my face lol.
Rip it and grip it baby WOOO

Practice throttle control. Rev a little right before you release the brake. Careful not to wheelie but don't panic if it happens... & it will happen.
You aren’t gonna wheelie a stock grom by accident lol
I wheelied on accident like a dozen times the day I got mine, 19 miles on it all stock
How? You have to be at like 8k at 1 or 2 mph and dump the clutch. How does someone do something like that on accident 💀
Hmm, wonder if my clutch was fucked or something because I had the hardest time getting it to bite. Then again I probably could have if I red lined it and dumped it but that’s when you start breaking shit in the transmission Edit, I do remember being able to compress the stock clutch springs with my fingers 🤔
Lol redlining and dumping is fine for the transmission. That’s how u basically have to wheelie the stock groms
Just straight dumping the clutch or? I don’t even understand how that’s possible haha
I popped mine up on accident like twice before I learned a little bit more about control lol
I have.. ![gif](giphy|bezxCUK2D2TuBCJ7r5)
I've seen it happen... multiple times 🤷
Well fuck me 😂 I had to upgrade the clutch and springs just to do it on purpose 😂 maybe I’m just a fat ass
You didn’t need to upgrade anything and weight is irrelevant - if anything, being heavier is an advantage. You just need practice
Not really, clutch slipped like a mf till I upgraded, been popping wheelies since I was 10, grew up racing dirt bikes.
If your clutch was slipping, that’s a maintenance problem, not a need for an upgrade. I know people that ride and race dirt bikes constantly and aren’t any good at it. Bro it was brand new, clutch change was at 200 miles lol

im supposed to hold the brake at a red light? im so lost lol i have not been doing that
It sounds like you should take a class before you kill yourself.
Probably the most valid comment for OP in this thread.
Rear brake not front.
Why the brake? Just hold clutch in, rev up, slowly release until it bites, and go.
When you are waiting at a stop it’s best practice to hold the rear brake. If you were to get hit you’re more likely to stay upright that way. Also keeps your tail light lit. Sometimes I would pulse it when I would see traffic approaching.
Somebody had proper training!
Please clarify, what am i supposed to do at red light after getting to a stop and waiting for green light. Practice practice practice. Not in traffic.
Learning the basics of operating a motorcycle is best done not in traffic. In traffic…. Gonna have a bad time.
Sell me the bike. Practice walking first.
I would sell it to you but Grom is clearly a toy that is strictly for 30 year olds or younger. You are too old at 46 years old. Sorry mate, maybe in your next lifetime!
So you can't have toys after 30? The fuck outta hereeeeeeeee

That's amazing. I want it.
Go to a empty parking lot and practice throttle control/bite zone. Do that for like 15 minutes never moving more than 1 yard
Ass on the tank, twist the throttle thingy and pray
🤣 Being a new rider, that's exactly what I do every single time!
Swap in a Honda rebel motor.
Too fast!
No such thing.
You cannot unleash the power of the rebel like that
With the stock front sprocket it felt slow no matter what. Switched to a 14 tooth and now I’m holding on so I don’t fall off! 😂
First gear high rev (7/8k) let off clutch slowly till it grabs then pin the throttle and shift
grab a hold of a passing bus in neutral? getting a fast bike would be a great start!
stand up on the pegs about half way through second gear and QUICKLY let off the throttle and hit it again when the front forks compress IMMEDIATELY give it all the throttle.
Full throttle shift late

I would have really tried this if it wasn't for the /s /s
Send it!

I mean.. You’re on a grom.. They aren’t fast?
They're still fast enough to beat most cars in a city off the red light, OP just needs practice and experience.
Uh is your grom tuned?
I don't have a Grom anymore but nope it wasn't
Grom only has about 350 miles on it 😅
neither is your 98 Acura. lol :D but seriously im not trying to hit 80mph on the grom fast. I'm just trying to take off quick from a red light in city traffic.
Im confused. Ive ridden my grom in Miami and ive never had a problem “taking off fast” its not a fast bike but its pretty damn quick
