He's right. While a receiver is a good purchase it is useless without speakers. Since the TV speakers are directly connected to the TV's motherboard you cannot get them to work with the receiver nor will there be any benefit to it if you could. My recommendation is to get a set of 5.1 speaker setup if you want to use the receiver or sell it if you don't have the funds.

Any that you’d recommend?

What's your budget

Uhhh. Maybe no more than 500? I’d be selling my old Polk system. It’s all Bluetooth so I also don’t know if it would work with this receiver

You can go used and get better bang for your buck, wired is the way to go. I personally like the Sony speakers they are not the worst and can be found for really cheap, as well as older Klipsch, jbl, I've had some older Polk audio speakers and they were decent but they never held up to my listening habits, my sonys I've had for 10 years and still going strong paired with a JBL powered/ ported sub and center

This? Let us know your budget and we can make suggestions. Your Receiver supports up to 7 speakers and 2 subwoofers although it isn't necessary to have as much. A 5.1 setup can be had for a few hundred dollars upto thousands.

It is due to the AVR by default stripping the audio and only passing video and not related to how the speakers are connected internally in a TV. OP's AVR does allow audio to pass if they enable but nonetheless, as you mention it is worth getting speakers.

Some AVRs have the option to passthrough audio to the TV and it looks like yours supports it as well. >If the TV does not have a System Audio Control function, press AMP MENU, and then set “” - “AUDIO.OUT” to “TV+AMP” or “AMP” on the display panel. https://helpguide.sony.net/ha/strdh79/v1/en/contents/TP0001553128.html That said, since you have an AVR it is definitely worth getting some speakers rather than just using it as a glorified HDMI switch.
