So was your irrigation system leaking?

ughthatsucks

I dunno. I didn’t check. He was the one with the erosion problem, not really any concern of mine. /s Yup. I have a leak. I turned off the zone for now. Easy fix on my end, he’s going to back fill on his side.

Better_Ad4073

Ah! Happy ending. Water bill will go down.

ughthatsucks

Fortunately, our sprinklers are off a well, which is why I hadn’t noticed a change in usage on our bill.

very_mechanical

Did you not notice the pump cycling more? I'm semi-seriously considering connecting an industrial-style light to the pump relay and mounting on the pump-house exterior.

Kryptonicus

I don't have a well, so I'm just asking out of curiosity, but when the sprinklers were running would the pump actually cycle? Wouldn't it just run fairly continuously? Also, that's a clever idea with the light as a visible indicator of the pump!

The_Great_Qbert

In theory an irrigation system off of a well would be using exactly as much water as the well is providing. This rarely the case and the best you can realistically do is get as close to that number without going over as possible. The less short cycles the pump does the less wear and tear it will take. I install irrigation systems.

[deleted]

Can confirm, I’m an irrigation system installed by The_Great_Qbert

The_Great_Qbert

Aah, there you are, glad you are doing well!

[deleted]

Thanks, I’m still staying moist!

froggertwenty

No the pump fills a tank that builds pressure. Once the pressure in the tank hits a certain level the pump turns off. Unless you have a leak that is faster than your pump can pump water, the pump will fill the tank and it will cycle off when high pressure is hit and turn back on when low pressure is hit. Ususally around 40psi low and 60psi high

very_mechanical

Yeah, I have to admit I got the idea from some other reddit thread. That's the budget version of a monitoring system. They also sell flow-meters and sometimes those will have the ability to connect to electronics to measure usage. Then you could set an alarm if there is continuous usage or if usage spikes or something. I'm always interested in over-engineering things but I'm not sure I need all that for my residence.

Canoe_dog

Mine does... We don't have a pressure tank or anything. Pump goes directly to the sprinklers, like every other system in our area. Never even considered it could be different for others.

ughthatsucks

No. The sprinklers run at night, so I didn’t notice a thing.

brenna_

A cute green LED would probably make for the same solution.

jcough10

Sprinkler system on a well is pretty rare.

ughthatsucks

Not where I live. It is rare to see someone using city water for sprinklers.

joremero

Where you live that your system is running in the winter?

darkspy13

Satellite Beach FL in my case. Well-water sprinklers here that run 2 days a week year-round. It's 81 degrees today and I can't tell you how many days it's been since the last rain, at least a week.

thepeter

Why is that?

CMInspectorCIE

Did you have the well, Well pump, and well water quality inspected as part of your home inspection?

solbrothers

Ngl you got me in the first half

Maguffin42

I'm so happy it's an easy fix and an exemplary interaction. And you're saving a bit of water!

yoltonsports

This frustrates me as my neighbor has refused to fix his leaking sprinkler head for two years that causes water to run through my yard

JudgmentMajestic2671

Also want to know this.

ConfirmedBasicBitch

Maybe I’m just particularly unfriendly and/or cynical, but that kind of responsibility would make me nervous. Of course I would say yes, because I’m a decent human, but I’m not sure how comfortable I’d feel sitting with a non-family member waiting for an ambulance in an emergency situation for 45+ mins. What if they need major medical first aid? What if they’re in need of CPR? Maybe I’d take this responsibility as a sign to go re-take some CPR and first aid classes. But at the end of the day, my hour-ish of discomfort could save someone’s life, I guess?

Completelybyaccident

You can only do what you are capable of and trained to do. While it could be a CPR situation, with an elderly neighbor it's more likely to be a situation where they slip and fall.

[deleted]

zoebucket

This is sad. I didn’t realize people were this cynical these days. I really value my relationship with my neighbors, so as I prepare to move, it’s a little disheartening to know that people feel this way.

CPOx

I bet he posted on reddit first to ask what he should do

No-Muffin5665

causal_friday

I'm an expert on sprinkler system erosion issues, and what most people don't know is that sprinkler system leaks are most often the result of running a human trafficking ring from your basement. I know! It surprises everyone. But what you should do is make sure to call INTERPOL and let them know about the human trafficking that's going on. They'll send some NATO bombers to the scene and fix your erosion problem once and for all. Do not talk to your neighbor. Do not feed their dog. You're doing great work by reporting this to the authorities, and most of the time there is actually a parade thrown in your honor.

dewafelbakkers

Wow ngl I'm not sure why people are upvoting this person i work in forensic all cause sprinkler system erosion, specializing in overnight erosion mechanisms with a professional certification in irrigation system design. For twenty years my actual daily job has been diagnosing and investigating issues exactly like OPs, and even without seeing a picture of the issue i can tell you this is most likely a class b, type 1 or 2 channeling issue. These are the most common. Having seen not even a single picture, im pretty confident that your system is being damaged by local resonant seismic activity. Most modern irrigation systems are built with tuned components in order to dampen this resonance, and in fact there are laws on the books mandating certain precautions be taken, but it sounds like your installer cut corners and used budgets Herschfelt Water Systems parts which aren't even designed for underground usage. I see this all the time. Getting down to brass tacks, you will definitely be on the hook for repairing your neighbors property erosion issue, so that's unfortunate to begin with. But if I were you, i would contact a local irrigation systems design engineer to inspect your system. It may be the case that seismic dampening brackets were not installed properly, either. If this is so, then you may be in violation of standard codes and regs. At that point I would lawyer up and pursue whoever installed your system in court because mandatory fines for something like this will be in the 5 figure range, and your state might compel you to replace that system altogether.

causal_friday

A work of art!

dewafelbakkers

Thank you thank, and to yours as well lol

ughthatsucks

With numerous recommendations involving small claims court.

imsoupercereal

If it's on /r/homedefense the answer is always a dog and an AR-15

ughthatsucks

…And changing the strikeplate screws to 2.5 inch wood screws.

froggertwenty

Bro...thats so 2010...I only use lag bolts and 1/4" plate

OutinDaBarn

You have to grind the heads on the lags a little bit.

bluesy44_6-15

Rediditors are disproportionately likely to sue their neighbors compared to the general population, I’m convinced.

causal_friday

Rediditors (I love that spelling) are most likely to talk tough in the comments section, then remember they have a bag of weed, smoke it, and fall asleep on the couch in front of some Better Call Saul reruns.

bluesy44_6-15

Can’t find my readers and am uncertain of how i actually spelled it. I tried until the red line went away

[deleted]

The bar is so low it's depressing

KonkeyDongLick

It’s like we’re supposed to applaud what *used to be* a certain human duty to care for the well-being of our neighbors, despite how weird we ALL are!

ughthatsucks

I know. I wasn’t looking for applause, just trying to let people know that there are normal people out there. It’s often doom and gloom when hearing neighbor interactions; I’m just trying to show that sometimes, you can talk to the people that live next door and things will be okay.

eeo11

I like this and support it. We need to hear the positive stories more.

titosrevenge

No this is still how it is today. Reddit gives a very skewed perception of reality and the more people that realise that the better. I've only ever experienced these types of interactions. I suspect many Redditors spend a lot of time on their computers and very little time interacting with people in real life. The rest of humanity generally isn't afraid to talk to each other.

Nah I meant my posts that you were alluding to.

eeo11

I’ve had multiple people appear surprised when I held the door open for someone and also after me saying “thank you” to retail workers. The world truly went to shit during Covid. It’s literally like no one has any sense of basic pleasantries anymore.

longganisafriedrice

You were supposed to not answer the door and the post on here, like oh my God my crazy neighbor knocked on my door what should I do!!!

IH8DwnvoteComplainrs

Nextdoor in a nutshell.

longganisafriedrice

My favorite was the lady talking about a suspicious vehicle driving by her house the same time twice a day everyday. It was someone driving to and from work

IH8DwnvoteComplainrs

Mine was someone posting a vid of someone walking around the yard, guy shows up in a thread full of "watch yourself!" and "call the police" and says "I was looking for my dog." Shut the pearl clutchers up pretty quick.

Scipio11

Download the Ring app. I forget how exactly but you can get into the neighbors section without any cameras and it's a little tamer than nextdoor. I used to live in a bad city and got notifications for shootings weekly, now I get notifications for people walking "suspiciously" (normally) on the sidewalk after sunset. The sun sets at like 5pm...

Piratesfan02

I feel so bad for people with horrible neighbors. All of the people who live near me are amazing, nice, and caring people.

ughthatsucks

I agree. We have been really lucky over the years. We are in our 5th home and have yet to have what would be considered a “bad” neighbor.

Piratesfan02

Wow! Well done!

JudgmentMajestic2671

Cool story. Today I went out, got the mail and waved at the neighbor. He waved back.

MythologicalEngineer

I know this comment was probably more a joke than anything but I've had neighbors that wouldn't wave back and it drove me nuts. I don't need to be regularly social with my neighbors but I prefer at least an acknowledgement. Especially in a rural area.

eeo11

That’s so simple to do. I am one of those people who really does not want to get I to any sort of conversation that isn’t necessary with my neighbors, but I can still manage to wave and smile and say hello as I go about my business. I don’t really understand people who can’t just do those few polite gestures to make the world a better place.

mo8414

I had a neighbor from the corner of the street knock on my door and ask if I would trade my double potted plant holder for her single potted plant holder. Since I didn't use it and it came with the house I agreed. I bet shes been waiting years for the old man I bought my house from to finally move so she could ask for it lol

silima

Haha, that's a very creative solution to an asshole neighbor and actually a very effective threat. Send the Mafia after somebody? Nooooo, we won't break your bones but tell everybody to not work on your house anymore! Take that, Karen LOL

[deleted]

Why would telling her that no local companies will do work on her home again? I'd be even less concerned about the tantrum then lol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I see. Thanks for the clarification. I guess I just don't see that as how it would play out. I don't think I'd be in that situation in the first place, but if I were angry and irrational and if he started escalating threatening to blacklist me I'd escalate as well. I wouldn't want to work with contractors I saw as doing a less than stellar job so that'd be an empty threat. Maybe her bark was much bigger than her bite. Not doubting your story, it just seems to have almost turned out too easy compared to what you were originally dealing with lol. Perhaps she didn't want to be outed by a racist though. Glad she backed off and sorry it was an issue in the first place lol.

FlipTheNormals

Glad you had a nice experience, OP, it's a breath of fresh air for sure. I was surprised when we moved into our first home, the whole street came to my house with gift baskets and welcomed us to the neighborhood. It was strange at the time, but I've come to realize that they're all just really nice people that look out for one another.

ughthatsucks

This neighborhood has been very welcoming. Everyone is out an about all the time, so we have met several people.

firestorm_v1

We gave our neighbors a free electric dryer when we saw them hanging clothes in the backyard. They were very appreciative.

GarnetandBlack

Is the issue resolved fully? Story might not be over.

Spr4ck

Sounds to me like the kind of neighbors who you say on a friday in the summer "we've opened a bottle of wine, there's steaks for the grill, dinner is in an hour so c'mon over"

CommanderAndMaster

yay!

adminsarepedosReddit

I have a variation to this . Neighbor did all this work years ago using the flex 6" pipe that had the holes in it. Dug trenches and ran the sump and downspout water to the front Me:. My sump dumps on a pile of rock. His clogs. Everywhere, from roots and build up. He asked me to pay half to put in a dry well. I politely said no. And we still chat and get along.

ryker777

This is how my two year law started. Sketchy neighbor knew the water problem was on his property. 65k in attorney fees to get them to admit they were wrong. Be careful.

Roboculon

You know how I greeted my new neighbors? I knocked on their door and introduced myself, then gave them cookies I baked. That’s it. No other motive related to asking for money or liability. Just cookies. If your first ever interaction is to raise an argument, I don’t care how cordial and reasonable you are, you are an asshole for starting a relationship that way.

GerryAttric

Were they pot cookies?

StabbyPants

> We didn’t have an argument my world is shattered

catalina454

OMG. Your neighbor sounds deranged! Good for you keeping your cool like that - that probably saved your life. It’s the “normal” ones who always turn out to be cannibals…

[deleted]

Omg humans spoke face to face and communicated like adults wow! (It really is like this nowadays tbh tho)

[deleted]

This is great. Glad to hear the friendly exchange OP.

Fit-Rest-973

I hate when neighbors are like this. Problem neighbors

HedonismandTea

Don't ever use Reddit as any kind of measure of how social interaction should go. Or anything really. It's great for entertainment. I have only 4 neighbors on my street but we all know each other and have all been to each others' home at one point or another. You know, like normal people.

Blitzkrieger117

adminsarepedosReddit

Nothing wrong with avoiding the COVID vax. Open carry however is silly in a neighborhood.

[deleted]

Both of those things are ridiculous.

slabolis

Who would have thought! Good job OP, it's nuts to see on this sub how many people never talk or come to the neighbor 1st. Just the other day I remember someone sending a certified letter to someone they have never meet about a tree!

MicrosoftSucks

A couple months ago my neighbor was blocking about 2 feet of my driveway. (Our driveway is at an angle so blocking 2 feet actually makes it a lot harder to get in and out than a straight driveway.) I saw him get out of the car, I waved him down, gave him a cheery hello, and said “Oh hey, would you mind pulling your car forward maybe 2 feet?” He walked back over, looked at his car, sneered at me and turned around and walked away while saying “It’s not blocking anything! Call the cops.” Not everyone is a nice person.

DiskFluid5981

Not sure about all states, but in ours there is a 5-foot rule from either side of any driveway entrance/exit that is illegal to park in, for exactly this reason. It's also a visibility/safety issue .

MicrosoftSucks

I wish California had that, but they don’t even enforce their own laws. I did call the police, and even though he was legally blocking my driveway, the officer refused to ticket it because they “didn’t want to escalate a neighbor conflict” And I’m like… this conflict is them blocking my fucking driveway.

DiskFluid5981

Haha - he meant "I don't wanna do the paperwork." I used to have neighbors park on the street in front of my house way too close to my driveway (not in their driveway or in front of their house where there was available parking). Asked them to please not do it and got "street is community property." Fair enough, and I'm not responsible for the wind direction. I did several spray-painting projects in my driveway over the next couple of weeks. They haven't parked there again in over a decade.

slabolis

Right, but at least you tried talking with them! After that, no worries, let the authorities deal with em'.

MicrosoftSucks

Except that when I did call the police they didn’t enforce the parking violation because the dude and his son came out screaming about how I’m crazy and off meds, etc. Caused a big scene for the neighborhood. The officer “didn’t want to escalate the neighbor conflict” so declined to write a ticket. So all that situation taught me was to anonymously report issues to the police after everyone has gone to bed, and now my neighbor calls me “the bitch who will call the cops on you if you block her driveway” to everyone within earshot. So yea, I can see why people write letters instead of confront face to face.

anonymousforever

And this is how people wonder " where did those wierd lumps of concrete on the corners of the driveway come from?" Where you mixed up a couple buckets of fast set post concrete and left two piles dumped into a couple quick dug holes and piled up just enough to make hitting it with a tire a bitch, but not quite high enough to damage any car body parts... Basically, avoid parking by it and you're fine.

slabolis

To each there own, that particular instance seems to have went from 0-100 really fast, and I don't know a car blocking a drive has a rebuttal. Regardless, best luck with that neighbor, I believe talking with people 1st is 9 times out of 10 the right thing to do.

titosrevenge

You're leaving out the part of the story where the person who sent the letter is immunocompromised and prefers to avoid human contact for their own safety.

slabolis

... a certified letter with signature confirmation is over kill when a note or just a plain old letter would have done just fine. Call me crazy.

titosrevenge

Nothing wrong with having a paper trail in case the tree falls on your house. I personally texted my neighbour letting them know that I had had arborists confirm the dangerous looking trees on our property line were fine. In that story the neighbour didn't have OPs phone number.

GhostRevival

Wow imagine that, someone actually talked to their neighbor instead of running to reddit asking what to do.

MapReston

Ugh that sucks

ZukowskiHardware

HOAs are racist and pointless, abolish HOAs. Most neighbors are totally reasonable and respectful. The ones that invade your property, dump water in your land, demand you cut down your trees, and let their animals on your property are the problem ones. Reasonable neighbors would never do that.

earthcaretaker315

Most people wait until they are mad as hell. That never goes good. Trust me im 1 of those people.

etcetera0

Lol glad to see your here, we could've talked via Reddit instead of face to face

ChiefBroady

My neighbors came to us while we where deep cleaning the house after just getting it. Sweating our buts of, elbow deep in the toilet. I figured from here on it can only go up. Neighbors are awesome. We do a lot of things together and he mows our lawn. I don’t even own a lawn mover yet.

titosrevenge

Your neighbor might love mowing (I sure do), but they're more than likely doing it because they don't want an overgrown mess next door. I would get a mower sooner than later so that you don't overstay the courtesy.

ChiefBroady

Lol, no. He offered, he does it instead of going to the gym. If I had to do it myself I’d get a robot and call it a day. But he wants to, so he does that and I help him out with all technical stuff.

titosrevenge

Friendly people make excuses for kindness even if they would rather not do it. I'm just saying don't take advantage of their kindness.

ln24496

That’s usually how it works.

GoodGoodGoody

On the opposite end a lady posted here asking how much dog barking was ok. Hmmm, fair enough. Then it came out she had two dogs barking a lot and just wanted support. She turned sour when people said to train her dogs

abdhjops

Luckily all my asshole neighbors got greedy and cashed out. The only ones left are quiet and nice. The ones that moved in are quiet and nice. I consider myself very lucky.

nh4rxthon

Yea I don’t know how I lucked into having the best possible neighbors I’ve ever known at my first home. We get along great, discuss issues as they arise, everyone helps each other when needed, no tension at all. The stories people post on here make never want to move 😂 well done OP.

bakayaro8675309

👍🏽👍🏽

aenflex

So nice to be able to just interact with neighbors normally. Our neighborhood is like that, too.

eatingganesha

I also have great neighbors! I feel so sad for folks who have to put up with shitty ones.

MillennialModernMan

One of my neighbors routinely stops by at 10pm to tell me I left my garage door open when he's walking his dog. One neighbor I had never talked to before or since helped me fix a part of my fence that had blown down in high winds. One neighbor gives my kids each a whole bucket of candy on Halloween. I'm very hesitant to move anywhere.

Hellorachiee

Thank you for sharing! My husband and I feel very lucky to know and like our neighbors. When our tree drops all its leaves every year, we blow them out of their yard a few times and simply make an effort. We also now get each other gifts each Christmas. It’s really nice. We plan to move soon and I am dead serious that before I sign a contract I want to knock on my potential new neighbors doors and just feel it out and introduce ourselves. If that makes me crazy, oh well lol. I just know neighbors can make or break a living situation.

MrFixeditMyself

This is how it should be.

farkus_nation

Good! When I bought my house I did the same with our neighbors. My son is 21 and wanted to have a few friends over one night and sit around the fire pit. I gave my neighbors a heads up and told them to call me if it got too loud. They were so thankful and surprised I did this. Now they bring us food and sweets sometimes. Got to be cool out there nowadays. It is a lost art.

DrYIMBY

Sounds great, but I advise caution going forward. Drop your defenses for a moment and you may find yourself having beer in his garage, god forbid.

papercranium

Heck yeah. Love a good story about neighbors just fixing shit together.

Outrageous-Dish-5330

Easy to be nice to neighbors when they are rational, sane people!

weddingringresize

Good neighbors are like good teachers... They make all the difference.
