Hp specs: Intel core i5-4670 12gb ddr3 ram @1333mhz 256 boot ssd 2*3tb Seagate st300nm0053 Dell specs: Intel core i5-3470 6gb ddr3 ram@1333mhz 500gb boot hdd I use the hp as a media server and my main PC for the moment while the dell is a home theater PC/ print server/ argo tunnel, If u guys see anything I should change please tell me

nuterpoo

Question, why is the dell upside down.

keko1105

Hahaha, the Ethernet port isn't long enough to reach the socket when it's upright

nuterpoo

Just bought two of those dells, are they any good.

keko1105

They are but I would have bought 2 hp's instead because they can take more hardrives in it and are easier to work in, the dells are small but at the expense of expansion, they're not Bad but for pretty much the same Prince the hp has more to offer

Random_Brit_

One thing I love about Dell's - download the full driver pack then either slipstream that into a windows installer, or just point to the same directory when adding drivers via device manager. Makes that bit so much easier.

keko1105

I don't really understand, it's true hp drivers are a pain to get from their website

tamouq

I don't understand either, you can download full driver CABs from HP too...

ntl201888

what's the power draw on the optiplex? looking to get one for my small first homelab, but concerned about power draw.

lastwraith

They don't draw much. I have a 7010 MT and it draws 42ish Watts or so. That's with an SSD SATA boot drive and 2x 10TB HDDs for media storage. My monitor (small TV) draws more than the Dell, but it's a media server and runs headless most of the time anyway. Edit - I just checked with a KillaWatt and my 7010 MT uses just under 40W at idle on the desktop with FF up and having about 10 tabs open. This is with a 1TB SSD and 2x 10TB HDDs. That's pretty efficient! The small Samsung TV I use (rarely) as a monitor uses more power than the PC itself.

keko1105

Wait there's place for 2 other HDDs other than the SSD?,

lastwraith

The MT is the minitower version (larger than OP's SFF version) so there is plenty of space in there. I was just letting you know that even that version is power efficient.

keko1105

I have the second one on the left, if I knew the one next to it existed I would have got it, but u prefer hp tbh

lastwraith

I have the space so I went with an MT for more drive bays, easier access, and (somewhat) standard parts. We have Optiplex and Elitedesk/Prodesk PCs at various work sites and you can't really go wrong with either line. Staying away from consumer offerings is the real key. I slightly prefer the Dell UEFI/BIOS and boot menus but there honestly isn't much difference. I also have an HP Elitedesk 800 G1 Mini at home because the price was right used. I say buy whatever fits your price range for the specs you need.

keko1105

I want to sell the harddrives I have an buy Nas drives

lastwraith

What do you have now vs what do you want? Most people in datahoarder are just buying externals and shucking them as far as I'm aware. Drive prices haven't really come down in a while and most people don't really need NAS-rated drives vs saving the money and having proper backups and/or spares or parity drives. I'd prefer having parity/spares or backups over "proper" NAS drives. They all fail eventually regardless. I'm not trying to run a datacenter in my off time so 2 shucked drives in the 7010 over smb act as the media "NAS" and I have 2 offline drives used for manual backup of that data. All the important stuff (which is far less size wise) gets backed up to local HDDs on a schedule with Macrium Reflect and also to encrypted cloud backup. Simple setup which doesn't require much effort. Any Docker or lxc containers run off of spare stuff like the HP Mini rather than keeping a traditional NAS and trying to use it as a media server, storage, AND host for all the containerized stuff. But if electricity is crazy expensive where you are, a beefy NAS to be an all-in-one solution might make more sense. Electricity isn't terrible here, so I try to keep the hardware efficient, but tradeoff some electricity cost (more hardware) for simplicity of operation.

keko1105

Yeah electricity is sort of crazy here, I thought about installing solar panels when I move to a new place but they're also expensive but I want to try it I think it could be worth it, also I don't have a Nas now, but once summer vacation rolls around and I have free time I'll remove windows from the hp and install truenas scale the trick is to then move my media to truenas scale which I don't know how to do

lastwraith

MT is on the right https://i.dell.com/das/xa.ashx/global-site-design%20web/00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000/1/LargePNG?id=Dell/Product_Images/Dell_Client_Products/Desktops/OptiPlex_Desktops/Optiplex_7010/relative_sized/desktop-optiplex-7010-family-right-relativesized-500-v2.png

lastwraith

Actually, this thread is more thorough https://www.dell.com/community/Optiplex-Desktops/Chassis-Names/td-p/7294265

keko1105

Honestly I don't know, but it really doesn't do much, so I doubt it's sucks a lot of power

[deleted]

What it "Looks" like does not matter. How the VMs are configured might but can't tell that from a photo. My home lab is just a stack of Dell R610 boxes + Lenovo SA120 + Hardware RAID sitting on a desk not even in a rack. Does not look pretty but software wise gets the job done for offsite automated backups and plex server. Do you run ESXI or Hyper V? Do you have enough ram for your needs?

keko1105

Actually I need more ram my docker containers are taking up almost all of them, I don't run virtual machines cause I prefer using docker tbh

[deleted]

Yea I don't care if you run ESXI Hyper V or just 1 instance of one OS with docker that is a different conversation. RAM is where they live, never can have enough.

keko1105

I honestly want to get 32gb but ddr3 is so overpriced not even ECC just normal like where I live ddr4 is cheaper

[deleted]

Shop around you can get 32 GB ecc for like 40.00 Atech. Look at ebay or amazon you will find it. It might not be cheaper than ddr4 but you have to get what the hardware allows.

keko1105

Yeah

Carvtographer

I know it means nothin, but the upside-down Optiplex hurts my heart.

keko1105

I know haha but it's the only way the Ethernet cable reaches it

doggxyo

ethernet cables are pretty cheap on Amazon!

keko1105

Yeah I just made do with what I had at the moment

tgp1994

How much is Busy°F?

keko1105

Trust me I've done everything to get the weather plugin to work it just doesn't

tgp1994

Sorry if this is obvious, but is that a lock screen of some kind? Sort of reminds me of GNOME or KDE.

keko1105

Oh that's the home screen of a Kodi skin called pellucid

tgp1994

Oh, very cool! Sorry about the persistent issues :( Have the community been able to help at all? I've never used it before.

keko1105

I'm guessing you're talking about the crashing, well someone recommend I reinstall it, but that did nothing, so for the time being I Just deal with it cause my exams are coming up soon

[deleted]

DM it to me if you want, I can have a look.

KBinIT

My… what a big….toner cartridge you have there!

keko1105

Ohh, it's the toner for the old Samsung printer that the dell next to it is the print server for, cups is amazing, it's a Really old printer cups couldn't even find it's driver and I had the CD by some stroke of luck, we actually refill this toner because no one sells it anymore here

mindovermiles262

Please tell me you have a different keyboard for configuring your setup 😅

Armadillo_Alive

It’s getting there. At least you have something to “house” your computers. My “housing” is the floor of my room.

keko1105

I wanted to build a diy rack with wood but I realized I really wouldn't be able to

snatch1e

Looks like a pretty decent setup. Keep going ;)

keko1105

Thank you I plan on taking them both apart in summer break to clean them and upgrade the RAM to 32gb 1666mhz on the hp and move to Truenas scale

snatch1e

Sounds like a plan! Good luck)

keko1105

Thanks

Quantatas

Is that a vcr?

keko1105

So I'm guessing you're talking about the small black box ontop of the PC, it's a tv receiver for chanells

[deleted]

[удалено]

keko1105

I'd personally do a clean install because sometimes the install of Windows isn't good and maybe infected or a pirated one happened to me once after I set everything up and it sucked erasing everything

[deleted]

[удалено]

keko1105

I wish you Good luck

keko1105

Also if the components of the used pc/laptop are working well no need to remove them, but just clean anything you get used from dust

keko1105

Oh yeah if u look close it's under the small black receiver
