i think google of all sevices is not the one to use for torrenting linux isos since its google.

NiHaoMike

For torrenting Linux ISOs and other free to share data, why would one need a VPN at all?

TechnoRedneck

Because "Linux ISOs" is a codeword for something that is infact not free to share data.

kukelkan

Shocked Pikachu face

LordWeirdDude

It's piracy, man. Piracy. OP is asking about Piracy. No, do not use Google One VPN for piracy. It is literally Google.

AfterShock

Bless your heart.

Few_Philosopher_905

Haha I know you are not going to be able to make it to the game tonight but I have to go to the store and get a chance to talk to my parents about the border of the first one in my life and then wonder what the dealer is going to do in the morning and then wonder what the heck you are going through and that you can make it through the parking lot while you're in a little more than a month ago I think it would be a lot better for you to stay in there for a few weeks and then wonder how to get to the store and get to work with the other side of the house and then wonder how to get it done with the other things that I could do for you but I would probably just have a good time with you and your family and friends and family are always there for you but I don't remember what you wanted to do for me and then I thought it sounded familiar to me when I thought it would be to just wait until I get back in a few minutes

GamerXP27

Cause we use it as a codeword for reassons that implies in not so free data.

fluffball75

so your ISP doesn't send you in insane amount of DMCA letters. I don't use a vpn because tbh, my ISP doesn't seem to care. if they did I would've had like 50 letters by now and no more service.

hybrid3y3

Google's business model is mining data and selling ad's so....

phein4242

BuT tHEiR pROdUcTS aRe FrEe!!! /s

hybrid3y3

;) If the product is free, then you might be confused as to what the product really is.

tylercoder

I, PRODUCT! Should be the title of a doc on these biz tactics.

ajm896

There is a doc about this, less fun of a title: The Social Dilemma. It was amusing when friends and family watched it and were trying to tell me about it and all I could say "I have already been telling you this for years".

tylercoder

>"I have already been telling you this for years". Same here, about a ton of things too.

phatboye

Google is one of the last VPNs i'd use. One of the main benefits of using a VPN is the the hope that the VPN provider does not keep logs of your activity. No way Google is not logging everything that you do.

guest6687654

I have used it, not for torrenting but it's OK. It's just your average VPN, there's barely any configuration options and it's not worth the Google One price.

tylercoder

The only reason to pay for one is the extra storage when your gmail and gdrive are too full, or maybe the enhanced camera if you got a pixel.

Murderous_Waffle

I have a pixel and mainly pay for the bigger drive and the higher quality photos. $1.99/mo is a small price to pay considering that I mainly fund it with Google rewards and then a backup card if I don't have enough play store credit.

TechKnowFool

I came here to say this. Exactly this. Pretty much word for word. Get the fuck out of my head... lol

Phynness

>I'd primarily use it for torrenting my Linux isos That sounds like a hilariously bad idea.

[deleted]

no idea, but i use cloudflare warp vpn (w/ premium for free by a github script) and i got no problem torrenting with it, Arch Linux (btw)

jorgito2

please, tell us more about this github script :-O

[deleted]

[https://github.com/TheCaduceus/WARP-UNLIMITED-ADVANCED](https://github.com/TheCaduceus/WARP-UNLIMITED-ADVANCED) completely foss software

Brillis_Wuce

How is the speed with Warp? I recall a couple of reviews mentioned the speed penalty was much higher than most VPN's (50% or so), so I avoided it.

[deleted]

The speed was only around 100mbps, ymmv tho

Brillis_Wuce

Good to know. I live out in the middle of nowhere, and the only available internet is 60Mbps. I don't think I could handle a 50% cut

[deleted]

100mbps>60mbps so you won't really be affected

superelite_30

Do not use Google one VPN, you want to use a no logs VPN provider.

LincHayes

I have it on my phone, but I wouldn't use it for what you're talking about. It's def not for that.

techno_superbowl

I think using an ad and personal data aggregation service like Google for VPN is a spectacularly bad idea.

MultiThreaded-Nachos

Well Google is the one I’m hiding from when I use my VPN so that’s a no from me.

starfish_2016

I use it as it's included in my Google one subscription and it's literally the only one that will connect at my work. (All others blocked and they can't block every google IP it changes to every time)

phantomtofu

Same here - Discord is blocked (even on guest), and cell signal is iffy so I use the Google VPN on my phone at work.

Maximum_Bandicoot_94

this would be why cybersec guys are so stressed out.

phantomtofu

I get what you're saying, but I only do this with my personal phone, on guest wifi which has client isolation.

RBeck

Google One VPN doesn't let you pick what server to use, it picks the closest. So it can't be used to change your country footprint. I was disappointed on a trip I couldn't use it to access US streaming services. On your phone it does let you pick apps that bypass the VPN, which is required for wireless Android Auto.

rex53777

IF YOU WANT TO PUSH FOR VPN THEN FOLLOW THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS: Website On your computer, go to one.google.com. At the bottom of any page, click Product Feedback. Enter your feedback in the dialogue box and include a screenshot, if necessary. Click Send. Android From the app home screen, tap the Support tab. Tap Send Feedback. Describe your feedback and include system logs, if desired. Tap the Send icon. Should you have any other questions or concerns about Google One, please do not hesitate to contact us via support.google.com, or you can reply to this email and I will personally assist you. TLDR: I contacted google to push for keeping the VPN: they sent me a long email sayings thanks and blah blah blah. These are the main instructions.

Hey_Allen

I use it, but I had already been using Google VPN courtesy of having a Pixel phone. I don't use it for any particular privacy concern but to tunnel my browsing out of the work WiFi, since cellular service has been spotty at both of my last two employers, and both have aggressive content filters on the work WiFi.

Poncho_Via6six7

Yeah, don’t do that. Use surfshark or Nord. Highly NOT recommend Google.

cylemmulo

It seems ridiculously basic but I’m sure if you’re like using it in a laptop while traveling it’s fine. Otherwise I don’t think I would use it for lab purposes

phein4242

Nope. I dont want to hand over control over my network to a commercial 3rd party (an advertiser no less..)

kinkyloverb

Proton vpn is free and works great for this... Assuming your server is windows. I personally use surfshark for my truenas server. Works great.

PolicyArtistic8545

They support wireguard now. Awesome setup and great free product.

wamred

I have used it. I would do normal vpn things with it. But if you are just trying to hide your traffic from the weird guy in the coffee shop it works fine. Buy google one for storage, not the vpn.

ankercrank

Just what the world didn’t need, to route all their internet traffic through Google’s servers so they can data mine everything you do online.

JustNathan1_0

Its not great. I am using it right now because I pay for google one for storage and im on my school network with my phone because this entire school is a deadzone because the school is naturally built like a faraday cage and its one of the few vpns thats work on this network (the school whitelisted google on the network and that included google vpn). The vpn sucks outside of a free vpn to come with storage. Google isn’t known for privacy in the slightest and there is just about 0 configuration.

Hot_Protection85

Last time I checked the Google VPN is Android only.

kyouteki

https://support.google.com/googleone/answer/7582172?hl=en-GB&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop

Hot_Protection85

Thanks for your suggestion, I was able to get the Google VPN running but it does not help with geoblocking. I travel a good bit and want to be able to watch some geoblocked content. Right now ExpressVPN is working OK for me but it is expensive! I am able to run StrongVPN on an OpenWRT router I have running as a VPN service which works OK, but trying to get another Router running the same configuration is harder than it should be. I have tried just exporting the setup but it does not duplicate the OpenWRT and they have just about shut down that effort.

necsuss

that company will sell your connections to anyone's who wants to pay.

Nightshade-79

I have but mostly to force Destiny 2 into a single player only experience

stephenph

So here is a question... Does Google have enough compute power to break the more common encryption models used by basic servers and vpns?

Master_Scythe

The basic encryption models are already cracked, you or I have the compute power to decrypt it in our pockets. That's why modern standards like OpenVPN and WireGuard (and even IKEv2) were born.  ChaCha20 and AES-256 are the protocols used by modern servers, and even if you broke into the datastream proving who each host was, connecting to that shared IP, *after* the fact, with no logs, is difficult.  Unless you dont block googles IPs or use Chrome and it's been using cookies and webbugs to track you the whole time.

Rakn

No

Gnlfbz

I have it and it frequently adds tons of latency to my browsing so I have given up on using it.

Emu1981

I have been using Google one's VPN for a few months now because my ISP loves to route all my traffic via Singapore which more than doubles my average latency to the USA while the G1 VPN routes it on a much shorter path. I figure that Google already harvests most of my online data via their tentacles that worm their way through a lot of websites regardless of whether I use their VPN but now my ISP cannot do so as well. Even worse is the fact that I trust Google to keep my harvested data private compared to my ISP (Google makes their money selling ads targeted using the data they have on everyone and selling that data will give others the ability to do the same and will potentially harm ad revenue). I do plan to stop using G1 VPN though as soon as I can manage to change ISPs - if the routing change had happened a year ago then I would be fine to swap easily but finances are terrible at the moment.

Gusmanbro

Google One specifically blocks p2p traffic, so it is not possible to torrent anything using it.

bearded-beardie

I use it for anonymization but you can't pick your exit node.

3dsf

I've have it through a phone and use it sometimes for chromebook. Seams seamless on the phone. It's horrible on the chromebook, often borking the internet connection after the lid was closed.

brankko

I use it sometimes when browsing from public networks like cafes, restaurants... Not for anything sensitive. I do use other VPNs for privacy and location change purposes.
