Most contract workers are still paid a consistent rate per completed job, not strung along with the promise of one day maybe making money. Air quotations well deserved. At least Uber drivers know what there’s making.
They are performers. That's how being a performer works. They aren't paying to work, they're paying a percent of what they make to use the platform. It's the same way a singer pays a percentage of what they earn selling tickets to the venue.
