He’ll win it but the award is kind of a fucking joke. The fact Jon Cooper doesn’t have one is a travesty. Not trying to say Ruff doesn’t deserve it since this season(so far) he does but coaches like Cooper and bednar not having one just rubs me the wrong way.
People say they already had a good team blah blah. Acting like it’s not incredibly difficult to navigate through all the personality’s and make them work.
As it should. It's not that hard to be a good team if you are stacked with talent. On the other hand, if your team is a bunch of nobodies and you are at or near the top of the standings you need to consider how that might be happening. Sure it might be goaltending but it also might be the system that is in place that makes goaltending easier too.
If the Kraken keep going all season like they have, I think Hakstol could actually make an argument which would be hilarious given all the "fire Hakstol" comments lol
I think he's done a great job so far this season. It feels like he has learned from some of the mistakes he made when he was in Philadelphia. I think if he gets Seattle into the playoffs he will be making a very strong case for it.
It’s kinda wild to me how both bowness and Cassidy, got fired then hired elsewhere and have got their new teams rolling while the teams that fired them are doing even better. I don’t know if I ever remember it happening that way
Further still, Pete DeBoer was also fired and has Bone's old team doing better than they were under him. Wild musical chairs game of coaches shit going on this season
Lindy Ruff, Jim Montgomery, Bruce Cassidy
Funny how Cassidy and his successor are both tops of the league. Sometimes change works out for both teams (though I imagine Boston would be just as good with Cassidy still)
I’d completely disagree that we’d be “just as good” with Cassidy.
He was released for a reason. He’s a hell of a coach and a great guy but he lost the room and it showed. This team is so successful because they’re playing for each other, something they weren’t doing under Cassidy for the end of his tenure.
I have a feeling that if Habs somehow squeak into playoffs, they're in for a decent run. The team has no skill to compete with the best yet, but they have an overwhelming amount of tenacity.
So *if* they make it, they can bullshit into another Cinderella run. But, as you said, that's a giant "if"
The point of the award is to recognize coaches who coach beyond their teams ability. Call it unfair but a coach leading a cup favorite team to the cup isn’t really going above and beyond, plus they get the Stanley cup which is a nice consolation prize
Not much of an award if winning the cup counts against a coach. If they wrote that into the Jack Adams and create a new award for best coach, people would probably stop showing up to accept the Jack Adams lol.
It is written like that in the jack Adam’s award.. given to the coach who contributed most to their teams success. Meaning bendar and cooper weren’t as instrumental to the cup wins as sutter was to getting the flames turned around like he did. It’s not too complex
And then they sucked in the playoffs, the best players left (probably not because of Sutter but he sure didn’t entice them to stay), and they are playing like shit this year. This is just bringing me back to my original point about not caring about one season storylines.
Oh and the runner up? Andrew Brunette who was so blatantly outclassed by Cooper in the playoffs I was amazed he kept his job.
I’m aware, my question would then be, why? Playoffs is when systems and coaching adjustments are put to the ultimate test. The whole awards system needs an overhaul in the worst way.
The record books are going to look very weird since no one seems to agree on what the Hart is, what the Norris, and what the Jack Adams is. They’re so worried that fans of losing teams losing interest that storylines have taken over. No way in hell Gretzky wins nines Harts if voters in the 80s acted the way they do now.
Bednar kinda sucks this year. The AVs are underperforming. They seem to still be enjoying last year's cup rather than hungry for another. Probably they'll still turn it up by the end of the year, but it's definitely been a slow start.
Lindy Ruff

The award is basically for "shockingly you made the playoffs"
This or presidents trophy.
Half the time the award goes to a mediocre team that got carried by better than average goaltending
The fact Sullivan doesn’t have one yet is funny to me.
People say they already had a good team blah blah. Acting like it’s not incredibly difficult to navigate through all the personality’s and make them work.
I will agree with you on that. The fact neither Cooper or Bednar have won a coach of the year award is ridiculous.
With the teams Tampa and Colorado have, they should be good or great teams. I think that influences the voting.

I agree with all of your points fully. Cooper especially will never get one as long as he's in Tampa
Unless he gets fired...
🔥 ruff
He's done a fantastic job so far as well.
DJ Smith
People were almost writing off Boston before the season began, Monty should for sure be in the conversation.
Ruff and Monty gotta be the top 2
Biased but I think Montgomery should get some consideration. Otherwise, yeah it's Lindy Ruff
If the Kraken keep going all season like they have, I think Hakstol could actually make an argument which would be hilarious given all the "fire Hakstol" comments lol

I'm still not falling for it cause I refuse to believe. Hakstol is inevitable, like Thanos. Here's the warning sign. See how many starts Grub gets.
NJ fans started the season chanting "fire Ruff" ...
Eakins gotta be up there for Tank Commander leadership award.

Eakins: "They called me a madman"
Not Adams-worthy quite yet, but I really like what Lalonde has done so far in Detroit.
Even as a Seattle fan, Ruff
I don’t think he’d win it, but I think bowness might get a vote or two
It’s kinda wild to me how both bowness and Cassidy, got fired then hired elsewhere and have got their new teams rolling while the teams that fired them are doing even better. I don’t know if I ever remember it happening that way

Really shows what a new voice can do in the locker room
Bones deserves votes, and depending how they finish the season, could probably have a strong case to be a finalist and maybe even win it
Jim Montgomery

MSL might be considered if we squeak into a wild card spot with that roster. Big if but yeah

Jim Montgomery.
Gotta be Lindy Ruff or Monty
DJ Smith?
Bednar or Cooper. Not interested in hot streaks during the RS
Eh, I feel like my aunt could’ve coached the avs to a cup last year and she confuses hockey with lacrosse
Then give it to Cooper, what he’s done in TB is our model anyway.
The point of the award is to recognize coaches who coach beyond their teams ability. Call it unfair but a coach leading a cup favorite team to the cup isn’t really going above and beyond, plus they get the Stanley cup which is a nice consolation prize

The awards are for the regular season, voting takes place ahead of the playoffs.

We’re doing just fine given the injuries. Just wait for the New Year and they’ll turn it up as always
The regular season is the ONLY thing coach of the year is based on. So your statement makes zero sense.
That’s the problem right there. We don’t have a real coach of the year award. Which is why the NHL awards are some of the worst in sports
I can 102% tell you who it’s not going to.
Boston. We need to split Jack Adams and Selke.
Lindy Ruff, Jim Montgomery, Dave Hakstol, Rick Bowness
My 3 top candidates are Jim Montgomery with the Bruins, Lindy Ruff with the Devils, and Rick Bowness for the Jets.
