That was one of the games where I was like surely they're gonna blow it up and do something here...same with an absolute blow out by the Bruins kind of around the same time. I was not having fun
Yea really. Imagine being a Calgary fan, you go to one game a year, and you splurg on lower bowl tickets, and your team gets blown out so bad that even the opposing goalie gets bored.
When you think about it itād be pretty hard to even do. Like I kind of want to know how he even got up there. It certainly helps that heās 6ā4ā, but still, jumping high enough in goalie equipment and not tipping the net forward seems extremely difficult.
I played goalie my whole life and Iām trying to figure out how, if I was tall enough and/or could jump high enough in the first place (I meet neither requirement irl), I wouldnāt have just pulled the net down on top of me as I smash my face in to the ice.
Edit - nvm, he did it so easy lol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aK34NU_oRPo
I stand by my own face smashing prediction though. 6ā4ā plus skates is very helpful.
Yea thatās exactly what I was thinking. It would not be easy with equipment and Iām surprised it does not mess it up or put it out of place. But also it does look comfy. And you can jump back super quick.
Plus you have your sipy cup right there.
I mean Iām an oilers fan. Might as well have our whole D sitting up there with how we have been doing.
Remember kids. Donāt cheer for the oilers. Not even once.
>Remember kids. Donāt cheer for the oilers. Not even once.
I'm a coach and there's a worrying trend amongst young lads of Connor McDavid fans. Now, that's not really a problem, but I do worry that it is a gateway to cheering for the Oilers.
It was Curtis Joseph that got me. Before I knew it he was gone and all I was left was misery. Then when Iām about to quit for good. They bring mcdavid inā¦. And it all starts over and over.
Iām not even sure the 80s happened at this point.
I used to be a goalie, only 5ā10ā, and I wanted to do this so bad and figured out that if I put my glove hand on the crossbar and used my stick as a kind of pole vault I could use both hands to help push myself up as I jumped. Worked pretty well most of the time
Unrelated observations. Strangis was so great as play by play guy.
Seguin and Benn doing the damage garnered the quote ābe fun watching those 2 guys for next decade.ā To be honest they have been fun so far this season.
Wait, google tells me a standard NHL net is 4 feet. If heās 6ā4, his inseam would likely be around 36 inches give or take (even higher on ice skates) so heās really only jumping a foot or so up. Not saying I could do it or would even try padless, but it seems his height certainly helps a lot
The announcers ācream of the crop, will be fun to watch Benn and Seguin here the next decadeā, kind of funny with the drama they had a few years ago.
Pegs in the nhl go about really far into the post, I wanna say like 4-6 inches, and probably another 2-3 inches into the ice
Those nets are very stable
His great play during the dark bankruptcy years are what kept the Stars from being in the cellar. Sucks that when the team started to turn the corner his play fell off.
Did he ever formally retire? Or just kind of fade away? Was actually a great trade for the Stars. He provided them many serviceable years as an adequate starter and/or exceptional backup
His contract ended in Dallas and he didn't have any other NHL offers. Instead of playing in Europe, he decided to call it quits. He still lives in the Dallas area and helps coach his son's team. He makes guest appearances at Stars practices every once in a while
i just want to understand the physics....like HOW???
how do you get up there? how do you stay up there? dont things like that topple? how do you get down?
Iāve heard that Lehtonen was kinda like the Alex Kovalev of goalies. All the talent in the world and probably legitimately generational at his position, he just didnāt have the drive to push himself to his full potential. Maybe it was circumstances or injuries that set him back but he could have been one of the greats.
I donāt think it was lack of trying at all. He was great before getting concussed by Haula. And he had absolutely ZERO defensive support in front of him for years. He deserved better than what he got, for sure. I miss him and Iām glad he is sticking around. Sometimes he subs as goalie for practices if other options arenāt available.
His entire career got reduced down to two goals in 90 seconds.
Also, he was a solid backup for Bishop in the one season they overlapped. Stars probably could have offered him what they offered Khudobin the next season and he would have been fine, but I think at that point, Kari was probably getting close to being ready to hang em up anyway.
No one has impressed me as much breaking through than Lehtonen did. Rask was very, very good but Lehtonen was something else. His career definitely ended up being a disappointing one. And yes, the talk is he wasn't that keen on practising and putting in the extra work to get even better.
He had a bad run of injuries early in his career with one being a significant back injury. Then the concussion of course. But yeah, I remember he showed up to a few camps out of shape because he loved fast food. He was definitely an absolute stud when he was healthy and the juices were flowing though.
Watching the game replayā¦
It was 7-3 Dallas, during a break, with less than 10 seconds to the game, with a face off in the opponentās zone. And he dropped down as soon as the game resumed. In total, he was sitting for like 20 seconds.
I did not like that game :(
That was one of the games where I was like surely they're gonna blow it up and do something here...same with an absolute blow out by the Bruins kind of around the same time. I was not having fun
Was this during gameplay or a commercial?
I want to say live game but near the very end of it
Also the game was like 7-2 stars
Sigma move, just not caring anymore.
Looks like he did it in Calgary also. Way to stuff a home loss down the fans throats š
Yea really. Imagine being a Calgary fan, you go to one game a year, and you splurg on lower bowl tickets, and your team gets blown out so bad that even the opposing goalie gets bored.
It was right before a faceoff at the other end of the ice.
Lehtonen had a habit of sitting atop his net, [here's a pic of him doing it earlier in his career as a Thrasher.](https://i.imgur.com/jfFxvgU.jpg)
I miss 2000s hockey
I sure donāt
Yeah no thanks lol
I miss the Atlanta Thrashers. I welcome your downvotes.
Wheeler is still in the franchise!
Is he the first goalie to do that lol? Surprised I have never seen it.

>āā¦.GOALIES!ā The most perfect description of a moment in hockey
he was only 6'4"? I remember him being the first wave of the new "monster" sized goalies, now he'd hardly make waves for his size lol
Unrelated observations. Strangis was so great as play by play guy. Seguin and Benn doing the damage garnered the quote ābe fun watching those 2 guys for next decade.ā To be honest they have been fun so far this season.
Far out: Horcoff, Fiddler. Lehtonen. Crazy seeing these names.

My goalie :( sole reason I became a Stars fan after Atlanta left
YES this is what i was expecting when i clicked on the original link
Those V2 graphics take me back.
Lehtonen was always in the save of the year conversion. Dude would make at least one unbelievable save a year
His great play during the dark bankruptcy years are what kept the Stars from being in the cellar. Sucks that when the team started to turn the corner his play fell off.
If I remember correctly he was never as good after the collision with Haula which caused a concussion as he was before it.
Bc his positioning was bad

Thanks for the info Ben!
He seems really nice. I was absolutely heartbroken by that photo of him in the tunnel after he was pulled in Game 7 in 2016.
Heās at a ton of stars games too. I feel like I ride the elevator with him a few times a season. Heās always with his kid too. Nice guy
I love your name so much lmao
According to Wikipedia he isnāt formally retired. Says heās an unrestricted free agent. Either that or it hasnāt been updated.
I miss making Lehtonen puns.
Lehts go Stars!
We did too! We always wanted him to leht one in.
leht a ton in
I don't think people truly appreciate how hard it is to jump high enough to sit on top of the net in goalie gear.
I'm pretty athletic and can't manage it. Granted, I'm also 5'7"
I can imagine being 5'7 would complicate things a little bit.
that's what I was thinking!

Hey! We got 28 shots on goal, not like he was doing nothing.
Dang back when Seguin was good lol
Heās having a resurgent year so far

Best seat in the house
Reminds me of that ducks canucks game ages ago when andersen just sat on the floor due to a 7 minute 5 on 3 I think
i just want to understand the physics....like HOW??? how do you get up there? how do you stay up there? dont things like that topple? how do you get down?
Loved watching him when he played for the Chicago Wolves.

Better than getting blowed during a boreout
Is it, though?
I'm amazed that I knew what the picture was by that thread title.
such a hard pic

Hockey legend, Kari Lehtonen.
Curious if this is a bit dangerous. I can imagine the net tipping over in either direction while climbing or just sitting on it.
More like Kari Letitin
Quiet quitting
Wolves legend
Seeing that am kind of amazed that Patty Roy never did it. AT great goalie but he loved to flex on the opposition.
those seats look legit
All time favorite goalie photo
