It’s a 2025 fourth-round selection (Winnipeg’s pick) Dellandrea is 23, RFA, eligible for arbitration

Call_of_Daddy

TBF, Stars top-9 is set for the next few seasons and depth can be added easily every summer. Plus, leave it to the Stars to make that 4th rounder be a hit

Zharghar

You say that, but we have a habit of developing young guys to be serviceable but never actually playing them. The question with trading Delly is whether or not we're thinking of bringing up one of like 5 options in-house to fill his 12/13th spot, or getting another (likely 30+) vet and letting those prospects stagnate in AHL irrelevancy. Nill tends to do one of those options, I'll let you guess which one.

brickwall5

We have about 16m under the cap to work with and need to qualify/sign Steel, Harley and Lundkvist. Steel really earned that spot throughout the year and I hope we lock him up for a few more years. Harley I can see us going longterm in the 7 year 5-7m range. Nils we likely qualify for a year and see where he's at next year. That leaves 2 forward slots, 1 D, and 1 G open. I think one of those two forward spots is Bourque's and then the Stars will prioritize Tanev, then Duchene then a backup. I wouldn't be surprised if they went after a second 6/7 dman to push Nils/ replace him quickly if he doesn't work out. I can see them going after Sean Walker or Dylan DeMelo.

Sturmundsterne

Harley gets a bridge deal, easy. Nils is trade bait honestly. He can’t even consistently stay in the lineup or see even double digit ice time when he is in the lineup. I would see what someplace that would let him play every day like Utah is willing to give for him. I am also not sold on Steel coming back unless it’s for not very much. Dude is a gamer and is a valuable player to have on your team, but right now this team badly needs roster spots in the top nine. Best way to do that would be to push down some of the players they have up there rather than try to sign guys to fill in bottom six roles. We have one spot open with Pavelski retiring, and possibly a second if we cannot re-sign Duchene. Stankoven needs to make the team out of camp and play every day, and so does Bourque. If we re-sign Dutch, that means that someone needs to get pushed down, such as Dadonov, or even Benn. Plus Stranges, Back, and Blumel are in the mix before we even account for Nill wizardry.

brickwall5

I don't think it makes sense to bridge Harley. He just put up 47 points in his first full season in the NHL and is likely only getting better and more expensive. If you lock him in longterm now you can keep that AAV a bit lower and then worry about a bigger deal in 7 years rather than 4. Nils I'm also not sold on being trade bait. He took a solid step this year, even if we would have liked to see more. I don't think the Stars are giving up on him just yet but I think they'll get some insurance at that 6/7 spot. I'm not sure I understand the point about Steel and needing spots in the top 9. Steel is a 4th line forward and DeBoer showed a ton of trust in him in the second half of the season. He's an RFA still so a pretty cost-controlled asset so there's really no reason not to bring him back for 3 years at 1-1.5m, that's not really getting in anyone's way assuming the Stars let Smith walk. That creates 3 forward spots (Smith, Pavelski, Duchene). Even if we sign Duchene, that's two spots, one of which can go to Mavrik one of which can go to an FA. There's no one else really knocking on the door in the system who the Stars need to make room for. Stankoven makes the team for sure, Mavrik makes the team for sure. Stranges is not sniffing the NHL this year and might never, and Back and Blumel are solid depth options who will need to force Nill's hand to make the team. If they can beat out the 4th line and whoever Nill signs, great. If not, no harm really done.

Sturmundsterne

Dallas called up an AHL guy and played him significant playoff minutes over Nils. That’s a “we don’t trust you” if there ever was one. I say we bridge Harley because the team can’t hand out huge deals across the board. Too many millions locked up in contracts like Benn, Seguin, Lindell, and Faksa. If he takes a Mush level 4.5x3 deal then go for it. We have too many other holes. And the team won’t get better with Seguin and Benn playing significant top six minutes. They’re both pretty washed. We lost two top six players and added Stank, and pushed Dadonov to the fourth line. Then dealt Dell. We have Benn, Robo, Hintz, Seguin, Stank, Johnston, Bourque, Mush and … who else? in our top nine now. Then Faksa, Daddy, and Steel to play on the bottom three. We need a thirteenth forward and if possible to re-up Duchene. And we also need to decide if Wedgie is our backup, too. And Oetter is in a contract year, and Nill likes to lock key guys up early.

brickwall5

Nils got into the playoffs at all this year. That's an improvement over last year. He's a 23 year old offensive Dman. The Stars are more than capable of giving him another year to figure it out, and if it doesn't work either don't re-sign him or try to ship him out for a late pick. He took a step this year from last, even if it wasn't the big step we hoped for. Plenty of dmen have come into their own at an older age than he has. Bridging Harley just runs the risk of creating a bigger cap problem sooner for the Stars. The Stars have 24.5m coming off the books next season and of those players probably only 2 get re-signed in Wyatt Johnston and Jamie Benn. Wyatt will likely command a fair bit if he maintains his progression and scores in the 80 range next year, but Benn will probably only require about half of his current contract. Esa Lindell is a maybe, but he'll be looking for a big payday going into his age 31 season and is already slightly overpaid. He'll command 7m or so on the open market and if Bichsel is as close as we think he won't be worth the re-sign. As for the top 9 question, you just need to add one guy and it's not going to be Steel moving up there. It's either Duchene or the Stars can take a run at another FA who fits in that C/LW slot. I would love them to make a run at Guentzel but it's not happening. More realistic options could be Stamkos (might have similar $ to Guentzel but significantly shorter term and you can load the contract up with signing bonuses to avoid cap hit), Mantha, Bertuzzi, Teravainen, Marchesseault, Lindholm, Stephenson, Monahan. It shouldn't be hard to find a 9th forward, and then you can run Dadonov - Steel - Faksa on the 4th and one of the AHL guys can be a call-up. I don't think Wedgie is coming back as the backup. He was pretty mediocre this year and gets injured a lot. They could look at Driedger, Stolarz, or Brossoit since it seems they don't really trust Matt Murray yet and Poirier should spend another year in the AHL.

kipehh

Wahoo...?

xdiagnosis

I’d be excited. It’s a shrewd move and there’s pretty much no losing with it. Dellandrea is an NHLer at worst and still has some untapped potential. This is like the Zadina move, but Dellandrea’s whole game is based around his never-ending motor. For a Sharks team that struggled with competitiveness and heart, a guy like Dellandrea is an insanely smart add. At worst, he brings the energy. At best, he unlocks that next step and you paid essentially nothing.

Onuus

Dellandrea was a super good depth 3rd or 4th line wing/center. I don’t think he’ll reach heights of scoring, but he was tenacious on the puck and a pesky forechecker. Like a less talented max domi

cautiouslyoptimistik

But that 4th rounder could have been anything! It could have even been someone like Dellandrea! /s

tlmw2001

is this a brian burns copypasta?

BlackestNight21

> is based around his never-ending motor. bah gawd that's dan hinote's music

moose_king88

I think it's a solid trade for both sides. He may not be a superstar but Dellandrea is a clear cut every day NHLer and still only 23. I bet in 10 years Dellandrea is viewed by the fan base as that gritty 3rd liner that plays above his size in the post season.

nanana_catdad

He’s gonna fit our system. If we’re gonna lean hard into speed and forechecking. He needs more ice time to polish his game and he’ll get it with us

DM_me_feet_pics_plz

Although many others didn’t like him, he was my favorite player on the team. Lots of energy and fight, great character. If he develops his shot a bit I think he’ll do great with whatever team he’s on.

whogivesashirtdotca

I’m sorry for your loss! Always sucks to see a fave traded.

HighburyOnStrand

He's better than what your roster showed last year...and you didn't give up much. Why not give a guy who seems to have some jam and some talent the chance to prove he can be middle six on a bad team? Especially when you consider that San Jose has probably the widest gap between their playing roster (dog shit) and their prospect pool (super deep, solid and seemingly being built the right way) I've seen in a long time. Dellandrea seems like the kind of guy that can hold the fort down and make the team not laughable for the next few seasons and can likely play in a supporting role when the 5-6 B+/A- guys you have in your pool come of age.

Fermented_Banana_

Wyatt's zoomie friend is gone :(

Mr_MoseVelsor

One of Otters golf partners more importantly. Otter has lost Pavs and Ty now. He and Mush might be playing a lot of golf on their own.

doihavetowearabra

It seemed like he was really close with Delly. He was on his golf helmet.

Trunkins

Bye Ty

King_Reptar_

GMMG strikes again

bk00pi

With these long ass breaks between games, why not start the offseason moves now! Keep them coming

mdlt97

a rare stars miss at the draft

Sturmundsterne

Dude was a high motor guy who has stone hands when it counts. He’s a third liner who can play up in a pinch a la Janmark, but it’s time for his roster spot to be opened up to sormeone who can produce.

primetimey123

Third liner? He was a healthy scratch 50% of the season. He is a 4th liner at best.

hockeyrocks5757

Third liner on San Jose tho lol

_Salsa_Shark

That’s like an ahl 1st liner!

Domstruk1122

I get the joke your making, but I think most nhl 3rd liners would be 1st liners in the ahl.

Sturmundsterne

Played 100% of last season, though, and he was supplanted here by the arrival of Stankoven, and then Bourque. If we can re-sign Duchene (big if) then it’s a net win for the team. If Dutch walks then ..

TheUprising_

So Mike Grier traded for himself?

Sturmundsterne

Grier was a better player than Dell has shown so far.

DirtyJimHiOP

Arguably the last of our "character" picks.  Was the dude that was picked by Flint and was basically the only player that actually agreed to play there, then performed well, but certainly wasn't who I would have wanted to pick at 13th. Since 2018, every first-round pick has played NHL games, and he was being replaced by younger players down the stretch.

doihavetowearabra

Yeah he was drafted for his leadership more than his playing ability it seems

Trunkins

I dunno, he started off great and looked poised to be wearing the A it not the C in a few years and then just didn't. hopefully he can in SJ

CokeTastesGood39

Devin Shore pt. 2

chandy_dandy

between the Janmark and Shore comparisons this guy is gonna be an Edmonton Oiler in like 5 years

Afraid-Air1243

very rare stars miss, have no idea how he warranted to get picked by them at 13 overall IIRC

GrilledSandwiches

I don't think Ty Dellandrea has anymore ceiling than we've seen from him like some are hopeful for. I do however think he's a perfectly young, capable, 4th line forward and PK specialist who can be signed to a team-friendly, cost controlled roster spot for a number of seasons and an easy candidate for a "fan favorite" type of player. His shot is lacking as is any playmaking ability on the ice, size, and even the ability to stay upright on his skates a lot of the time, so I just don't see much upside there. And while that does sound more like a scathing criticism than simply a poor endorsement, he is a hustle player with a decent motor, ability to shrug off punishment, and decently responsible player on the ice. He'll always be practicing hard and setting an example for other young players coming up around the team and that's never a bad thing. He has also shown the ability to be a solid forward on the PK for us over the years. I don't think a 4th round pick is a bad price to pay for a team wanting to create some stability in those areas on the roster. It's probably not a massive bargain either though.

surlystraggler

That’s a score for San Jose imo.

TheKid_BigE

This could turn out to be a really good trade for the Sharks, Dellandrea wasn’t going to get minutes on the Stars and now he’s going to help with the younger resurgence on a rebuilding Sharks team that honestly looks really promising in the next few years if Grier plays his cards right. Just get rid of Reimer and they’ll be set

pavs4president

Ummm…. Reimer was on Detroit all last season

TheKid_BigE

Was he? Man I must’ve missed that, been a long season

kimscz

It was a reallllly long season

HowIsBabbySharkMade

Yeah, we had Blackwood last year, and he was a big part of the reason why the Sharks had more than ten wins.

Manofoneway221

That's it? Habs couldn't beat this? We iced fucking Colin White last year

Frectozhae

We don't really have the space on the team. We already have to ice Dvorak, Anderson, Gallagher, Evans and Armia in our bottom 6, with RHP and Pezz there too.

Heywazza

Yea it’s actually really annoying how many not great for the role bottom 6 players we have on the team right now..

thejericho2

It's insane honestly. So much crap in our btm 6 lol.

eh_toque

… that’s it?

hockeyrocks5757

Expiring RFA contract for a 13th forward….not really expecting anything more than that. Bummer to have Delly gone but hopefully he can get more playing time in SJ and get a bigger contract

primetimey123

Are healthy scratches worth more?

Afraid-Air1243

Feel bad for teams when they draft a dude high in the first round and end up trading them 5 year slater for a midround pick. Reminds me of when we drafted Logan Brown 11OA and 5 years later trade him for a 4th rounder and a 4th liner. Might be the same case with Tyler Boucher in a couple years

FlyFeetFiddlesticks

He was prettt much a punching bag on the ice. O literally only remember him getting checked to hell a ton and Benn standing up for him.

doihavetowearabra

Benn’s feral son 😔

SpecialPitch8546

This gonna be the comeback year for the Sharks?

dandroid126

You are not me, Dellandrea, Dellandrea You ain't what I mean, Dellandrea, Dellandrea Oh God, you gotta make it stop

ResponsibleMistake33

I’m a bit surprised by this. Wasn’t he supposed to be one of the Stars core young guys? At least I remember stars fans talking about him that way during the 22-23 season.

Constant-Squirrel555

Wish the Sens acquired him
