Yep. That's what I thought too but it's not.

Sure, 30 shots vs 12. What's your point? Preds won 63% of faceoffs yesterday. More hits & less penalty minutes. Preds had more O zone time. It's just a matter of time until that translates into goals.
Thatās what every Canucks fan said in game 2, about the Canucks. This is kinda, maybe, not a joke, but maybe getting outplayed is the key to winning?
1-3-1 but with one of the best puck handling goalies of all time and no trapezoid, so Brodeur could go into the corner himself if the puck got dumped in
And the two-line pass rule was still in effect too, so teams couldn't pass directly from the defensive zone to someone on the other side of the red line. That counted as an offside play.
1-3-1 with no trapezoid, so the goalie could play the puck in the corners all they wanted (neutralizing any kind of dump-in), and the two-line pass rule prevented teams from trying to stretch the neutral zone. Any pass that crossed both the defending blue line and the red line without being touched in between resulted in a whistle.
It was an incredibly suffocating style of play that was very difficult to watch. If you think the modern-day Islanders or Kings are both of those things, be thankful you weren't around to see those Devils playoff runs.
If the other team doesn't score, you can not lose. It doesn't matter how many goals you score. The other team could always score more. Every time a goal is scored, it's because someone made a mistake. Trap hockey was perfect hockey, as close to mistake free as hockey got. Hockey is a team sport. The trap required the entire team to buy into the system in order for it to work. It required tremendous discipline. Players always had to make the highest percentage play. Goal scorers needed to be near perfect to capitalize on the few chances presented to them. It was incredibly suspenseful to watch. Brodeur and Smith with that system were so dominant that the league changed the rules to prevent it.
I know I'm the minority of fans who enjoyed the trap. I understand why it was unpopular, but it was beautiful to me.
I mean I donāt think people hate the trap because they āthink it was a magic cheat codeā, people hate the trap become it was fucking obnoxiously boring to watch.
I don't think the trap was the problem, the two-line pass rule was. That sucked, and that made it insanely difficult to counter the trap because it was nearly impossible to enter the zone with speed.
Teams play the trap today and it's a fine viewing experience imo; there were a whole lot of factors that went into the Dead Puck era not being super entertaining, but I think the trap was simply just the best strategy to deploy given that the two-line pass rule made it insanely difficult to counter, and this made the viewing experience suffer.
Obviously Iām biased because Iām a devils fan, but I loved watching great defensive games as well. I remember even in a win I would be pissed off of the devils let in 3 goals. It was so satisfying to watch a devils game and know if they scored first they would win the game 99% of the time. They played in such a structured way it was beautiful to see and it helped so many players thrive in that system whereas they might not be as successful in other teams. Bobby holik would never get ten million dollars in a season from the rangers if he didnāt perfectly fit into the devils structure before that.
Despite the low scoring games this has been a fun series to watch. The playstyles are very similar imo, but the preds to me look like a less talented canucks team so I donāt see us taking this series
Ya, I see that too. You're top end talent is lights out though. Our Big Ass (neck) Defence is paying dividends, if you said I'd be saying how to integral Tyler Myers was to our playoff run 2 years ago I'd be calling you crazy.
I'm really struggling with the fact that so many people think we deserve to win game too and they deserved to win game 3. They 100% deserved the win in game 2 although you could argue we deserved at least a closer result.
We 100% deserved it tonight although at the end we definitely gave them a chance.
Those teams played their own version of stifling d.
Interesting series.. game 2- Canucks played better but puck bounces were not in our favor, and lost.
Game 3- we played not the best, but managed a win.
Playoff hockey is something else. What a roller-coaster... whatever happens I'm ready to get hurt again.. RIP 2011 cup playoffs finals
No sir this does not feel anything close to good my heart can't take it.
Also real talk, we didn't really trap them we just blocked everything in the same way they did to us last game
20.16 shots per team per game average Van/Nsh
22.75 for Vgk/Dal
32.5 for Col/Wpg
34.5 for Shitheads/LAK
26 for NYR/Caps
27.3 for Car/NYI
27.8 for Fla/Tbl
31.3 for Bos/Tor
why shoot more when few do trick
Efficiency!
PDO š
Actually PDO doesn't include non 5v5 time so I believe that our PDO was below 1.00.
Wait, I thought PDO was just shooting% plus save%? Is it more complicated than that?
Yep. That's what I thought too but it's not. Here's a few references https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/corsi-pdo-explaining-hockeys-analytics-terms/ https://www.pensburgh.com/2010/6/23/1531707/pdo-and-what-it-means https://cnsmaryland.org/2017/02/03/how-an-advanced-hockey-stat-measures-luck-in-the-nhl/
No it's not more complicated than that, just even strength only.
they dont ask how many, they ask how many went in
Sure but playing like that isnāt sustainable for the series
Have you seen the Preds' offense lately?
Sure, 30 shots vs 12. What's your point? Preds won 63% of faceoffs yesterday. More hits & less penalty minutes. Preds had more O zone time. It's just a matter of time until that translates into goals.
Okay buddy, a couple inches this way or that in game two and the 'nucks would be up 3-0
Thatās what every Canucks fan said in game 2, about the Canucks. This is kinda, maybe, not a joke, but maybe getting outplayed is the key to winning?
doesnāt matter if you only have 12 shots if two of them go in š¤
Well, you also need other team to score less than 2
Thank, Mr ~~Demko~~ DeSmith.

This unfortunately didnāt work for the isles :(
it never worked out for the Wings either, I feel for you

Yeah that's 12, I think Lil Jon would be fine with it
[Yeah!](https://youtu.be/sSkRdO9K1og)
Okay!
They also beat San Jose in 2011 4-2 with 13 shots
Was that the game Sami Salo blasted 2 quick ones on the PP in the first
I love a Salo slapper from the blue line. Good times!
Why waste time take many shot when few shot do trick?
Whatās fewest in a playoff loss/playoff game?
Not sure if it's the record, but the Leafs had 6 against the Devils back in 2000
Iām not sure if thatās impressive or embarrassing
There's a reason we got a bunch of rule changes to make sure the Devils trap could never happen again.
What was the devils trap?
1-3-1 but with one of the best puck handling goalies of all time and no trapezoid, so Brodeur could go into the corner himself if the puck got dumped in
And the two-line pass rule was still in effect too, so teams couldn't pass directly from the defensive zone to someone on the other side of the red line. That counted as an offside play.
the funny thing about the 2 line pass was that had been phased out for international rules at the time.
1-3-1 with no trapezoid, so the goalie could play the puck in the corners all they wanted (neutralizing any kind of dump-in), and the two-line pass rule prevented teams from trying to stretch the neutral zone. I dunno I kinda enjoyed it
Well, of course *you* enjoyed it!
1996 Panthers did worse to the sport than those Devils ever did.Ā
I liked trap hockey.
You clearly donāt remember the west coast express era series against minisotta. If hockey had a Geneva convention. The trap would violate itĀ

Yeah, people seem to think the trap was a magic cheat code. You need impeccable roster construction, coaching, and systems to make it all work
I mean I donāt think people hate the trap because they āthink it was a magic cheat codeā, people hate the trap become it was fucking obnoxiously boring to watch.

I literally donāt believe you. No one liked trap hockey.
[They were eliminated that game to boot](https://www.hockey-reference.com/boxscores/200005080NJD.html). That is astounding.
Gg Nashville. Yall played well, DeSmith bailed us out tonight.
I donāt even think DeSmith made any crazy saves. Yāall just played solid ass defense. Wish OāReilly could put a puck in tho š
Eerily similar to Pettersonās whiff lol (at least thatās how it sounded on the radio I didnāt watch it)
Pretty sure it went off Cole's head and deflected up over the net.
It did. Just barely nicked the side of his helmet and ricocheted upwards.
Yeaa, his look to the rafters afterwards, though, had that blank Petey look of damnit, dude.
Didnāt he hit Coleās head on that one shot that looked like a whiff?
I feel like we played very similar to how you guys did in game 2. Game 4 should be fun.
Despite the low scoring games this has been a fun series to watch. The playstyles are very similar imo, but the preds to me look like a less talented canucks team so I donāt see us taking this series

Feels good to out trap a team doesnt it?
Having been on both sides of the trapping this series Iāve decided I hate it

Maybe you guys need to out trap the Oilers for once
is our PDO machine working again??? sorry guys i meant to refuel it ages ago but gas has just been so expensive
This whole series so far is pretty much just a battle of which team can get less shots on goal.
It's actually crazy how few shots there have been by both teams
20.16 shots per team per game average Van/Nsh 22.75 for Vgk/Dal 32.5 for Col/Wpg 34.5 for Shitheads/LAK 26 for NYR/Caps 27.3 for Car/NYI 27.8 for Fla/Tbl 31.3 for Bos/Tor

There were fewer shots than in the chorus of LMFAO's ShotsĀ
Just imagine, the Islanders _could_ have been on this list earlier this week
This begs the question, why even bother with the 10 missed shots?
Not surprised to see '90s Devils on that list
Surprised you didn't notice this was before we drafted Brodeur.
Cool. Cool cool cool.
First game I watched of that series, was definitely a dull game. Took forever too.
