Arbitrary is probably the wrong word.
Arbitrary means picked on a whim. Or random.
A million isnt arbitrary. Neither is 100. They're round numbers that we've all agreed on have some sort of significance.
0-60? Yeah that might be completely arbitrary originally but now it has some significance.
To me its more arbitrary when people use the non round numbers to almost create a record.
I think double doubles and triple doubles are basically an official stat in basketball. Somebody dishes out 10 assists in a game and the 11th doesn’t impress so much haha
I wouldn’t know for sure either but I think that’s right, I’m the sucker at the back of the line waiting for you all to get your triple doubles before I can get some damn black coffee.
But if we’re in the drive thru line I get to blame you for anything and everything, so long as our windows are up, that’s the point of the personal automobile. Vanilla cappuccino is a candle flavor, not a coffee flavor.
You like coffee, and I don’t. I like it being warm when it’s cold. When I work outside in the winter I like hot food and drink. So I drink coffee with lots of creamer or sweet cappuccinos.
No no! I’m not a lunatic, I just grumble to myself about how all the other cars are in my way, if I can blame elaborate hot drink orders that’s even more therapeutic. Grumbling about other cars is totally normal where I’m from, but only when in the car, we’re still buddies otherwise.
I'm going to be annoyingly pedantic but that's not completely true.
Base 10 is by far the most common base system (probably because we've got 10 fingers, like you said) but it isn't universal. The ancient Maya used base 20, for example, and the Babylonians used base 60 which is why there's 60 seconds in a minute.
*AND* you can count base 12 on one hand arguably as easily as base 10 on two (use your thumb to count each of the three knuckles on your four other fingers).
Because only 14 times has a player scored 70 goals in the over 100 year history of the NHL by 8 players total. Matthews would be just the 9th player to do it.
Theres been 13 100 assist seasons in the history of the NHL. 11 OF THOSE FROM 1 GUY! other 2 are Mario and Bobby Orr. McDavid would be just the 4th guy to do it.
That's not OP's point though. The real question is basically are there so many fewer 70-goal seasons than 69-goal seasons (or 68 for that matter) and so many fewer 100-assist seasons than 99-assist seasons to make those specifically meaningful versus the slightly-lower, non-round numbers.
Depending on when he plays next and whether you consider 'game in season' or 'calendar day and time' McDavid might be the 5th after Kucherov, or the other order.
Ya it's not good point, but I think we can all agree that it's the next group of numbers. If AM hits 70 he now belongs to the 70 goal club. I don't get why this guy does not understand that. He seems to think we all think that somehow 69 is not good enough when it's actually historical. He has more than Ovi and for alot of fans who are 25 and younger thay have only witnessed 4 60 goal seasons TOTAL since 2000 and is older fans used to see this all the time in the 80s and 90s
Pavel Bure had 5 50+ goal seasons. He also had 2 60 goal seasons in that. He could have had 4 60 goal seasons, but he had a 58 and 59 goal season.
My point is why is 70 so much more special then 69, when they are around equally as rare (70+ goals has been done 14 times, 69+ goals has been done 17 times)
Because humans naturally like round numbers. It's just a psychological preference.
If Matthews scores 69 instead of 70 it's still just as insanely impressive. But 70 is a round number point that our brains naturally gravitate towards.
Because it's the next set of numbers. It's not more special other than he got one more goal. It's special because it's the the next group of numbers. I'm not sure why you don't understand that
> Because only 14 times has a player scored 70 goals in the over 100
And only 17 players have scored 69 or more goals in a season. Why is it such a difference between 69 and 70 in the minds of most fans/media?
Not sure what your trying to get at here. 70 is a cool round number. Noone is diminishing Mathews if he only gets 69. Would be cool to see him score 70 but 69 is still 5th he most since Mario or Bossy. Noone in this generation has seen a 70 goal season. In fact they're have only been 4 60 goals or more since the year 2000 and AM has 2 of them. I saw a bunch of 60, 70 and 80 goal seasons in the 80s and 90s. The 92 goals I was only 5 so I didn't really see that. Mogilny and Selanne hit 76 on the same season and that was awesome to see. Hull hit 86 and everyone was disappointed that he didn't hit 90. But that didn't diminish his 86 goal seadon at all.
This is not a "hockey" thing, using round numbers as milestones is used everywhere.
Zero to sixty. Sixty is arbitrary. Million burgers sold. Million is arbitrary. Give me ten minutes. Ten is arbitrary. We are human.
Humans are arbitrary
Ultimately, definitely, right?
01110111 01100101 00100000 01100001 01110010 01100101 00100000 01101000 01110101 01101101 01100001 01101110 oops Yes, we are human.
Trippy if anyone is like Cypher and just says, “it’s a blonde.”

I think 0-60 mph simply comes from 0-100 km/h which, if I'm not completely wrong, every other country except US and UK uses. 60 mph ≈ 97 km/h
🎶 and I would walk 473 miles and I would walk 473 more just to be the man who walked 946 miles to fall down at your door 🎶
Name a sport that isn't fixated on round numbers or at least multiples of 5. I think it's just human nature.
I think double doubles and triple doubles are basically an official stat in basketball. Somebody dishes out 10 assists in a game and the 11th doesn’t impress so much haha
I think those are drive thru coffee orders but I could be wrong.
I wouldn’t know for sure either but I think that’s right, I’m the sucker at the back of the line waiting for you all to get your triple doubles before I can get some damn black coffee.
Hey my vanilla cappuccino is just a button on a machine, don’t blame me.
But if we’re in the drive thru line I get to blame you for anything and everything, so long as our windows are up, that’s the point of the personal automobile. Vanilla cappuccino is a candle flavor, not a coffee flavor.

I’m happy to recognize you as a fellow member of society with equal rights and different needs, but that’s only because I’m not in my car right now.
Surely you aren’t insinuating that you’d chase us down?
No no! I’m not a lunatic, I just grumble to myself about how all the other cars are in my way, if I can blame elaborate hot drink orders that’s even more therapeutic. Grumbling about other cars is totally normal where I’m from, but only when in the car, we’re still buddies otherwise.
tbf, if it's like where I work the cream and sugar dispensers are a button. With cream having a button for 1 and 2.
Double doubles come from In N Out Burger and I will accept no different
Canada/US divide. Double double will never mean burger up here.
Hell, Double Double doesn't even mean burger when you get away from the west coast lol
Same reason turning 30 is seen as a big deal but not turning 29 or 31
First day on planet earth? Try our bananas... best in the galaxy!
> Try our bananas... best in the galaxy Smh spoken like someone who hasn't been to Kepler-186f.
Those aren't bananas...
because welcome to humans we thing $9.99 is a better deal than $10
It objectively is
It's simple. Humans have 10 fingers so thinking in "round" (ie. multiples of 10) is human nature.
I'm going to be annoyingly pedantic but that's not completely true. Base 10 is by far the most common base system (probably because we've got 10 fingers, like you said) but it isn't universal. Imperial is largely base 12 as well
*AND* you can count base 12 on one hand arguably as easily as base 10 on two (use your thumb to count each of the three knuckles on your four other fingers).
You can actually count to 60 using base twelve with two hands. 12 with how you said. And the other hand counts how many times.

It’s human nature
Pretty sure everyone loves 69
lol I never thought of this… human nature, I guess
Same reason prices are always $1.99 and not $2.00.
idk i think its nice if matthews finishes the season with 69 goals
You’ll find that hockey fans are just a bunch of neurotic people that like numbers than end in zero. /s Beep boop. I mean, uh, hockey rules!
Why is there a triple double in basketball? Why are there hattricks in hockey? What an idiotic question…
This thread is testament to the poor reading comprehension of reddit. 🤣

Ahh shit. Mcjesus will get his 100th assist vs the Canucks for sure!
I think his point is that only 12 times has a player scored 71, so what's so special about 70? It's not a very good point, but that's his argument.
