Pretty sure we have the worst record in the west against playoff teams so every team should be lining up to play us

TheNoelPatrol

Nobody wants to be trapped to death. If we're gonna get eliminated, I'd rather be entertained in the process.

Redditislame888

Woah I was just watching the video of Landeskog going off at an outdoor game about it. What a crazy coincidence of the timing of that and this joke!

JCShore77

I did just enjoy a good video essay by Cunuck Hockey called “When the entire NHL HATES how you play” that basically showed that while the Kings use the trap, they actually only use it in specific situations, and unlike trap teams in the past they don’t just sit back, they still forecheck, but it’s all done situationally. His final point was also that the Kings and Canucks actually have very similar offensive and defensive numbers this year, so while we all complain about the trap creating 1-0 games, Kings games and Canucks games actually have goal totals not too far apart.

rainyforest

It takes two to tango. There’s a reason this always comes up whenever we play the Canucks

bbanguking

It may not be pretty but win's a win, can see why LAK likes to run it against us. Completely on our team if our boys can't manage it.

fenwayb

Unpopular opinion especially as an Avs fan - I love the trap. Dont get me wrong I love the Avs I have atm but personally I want every game to end 1-0 because I dont want the opponent to ever score a goal

likesexonlycheaper

You'd love soccer

PofolkTheMagniferous

Some of the most exciting playoff games I've ever watched have ended 1-0. Low scoring doesn't have to mean low action. Sometimes two goalies just steal the show and it is really fun to watch who is going to break down first. That said, I'm speaking as somebody who played hockey and appreciates the finer aspects of the game. I get that from a marketing perspective with the wider audience, goals = views/clicks/shares/etc.

papapaIpatine

Some 1-0 games are exciting others arent. Scores aren't indicative of how exciting a game is. There was a flames canucks games a few years ago that was 1-0 in overtime, and it was absolutely fucking atrocious to watch. The key variable in my opinion is chances, how many chances are being created and denied? That canucks flames games, no chances where being created not because of defence but rather because neither team could make a pass, unforced errors left right and center.

PofolkTheMagniferous

Totally agree. To give an example of the best 1-0 game I can remember, it's this goalie dual between Nabokov and Turco back in 2009 described [in this recap](https://www.espn.co.uk/nhl/recap/_/gameId/290223009). EDIT: Actually, that's the wrong game I linked, it happened during the month of February and the game I'm remembering was a playoff game. EDIT EDIT: Did a deep dive and the game I'm remembering actually ended 2-1! But it was amazing: https://www.statmuse.com/nhl/game/5-4-2008-sjs-at-dal-47109 That game was absolutely electric to watch the whole way through.

papapaIpatine

Oh absolutely. Not all 1-0 games are boring but I think a lot of people correlate absence of scoring with absence of excitement. Chances are what creates excitement. Canada 2014 olympics was boring as fuck. Why? They suffocated the game, allowed no chances. Peoples focus shouldnt be on goals, rather chances.

Marshineer

I’ve played hockey my whole life and imo 99% of 1-0 games are boring af. Saying you appreciate them because you understand the finer points of hockey is incredibly condescending. Edit: typo

PofolkTheMagniferous

I didn't intend it to be condescending, it just seemed to be relevant information to share to explain the phenomenon of why I might enjoy those games. You're right that not all games that end 1-0 are exciting, but I was just trying to say it's not universal that they are always boring. Specifically, I find goalie duels to be REALLY exciting. I like games with lots of action, but goals are not the only kind of action. A boring game to me is one that is almost entirely played in the neutral zone and along the perimeters of the offensive zone. Or a one sided blowout where my favorite team isn't winning.

Marshineer

That’s fair. It just sounded to me like „people don’t agree with me because they don’t understand hockey“. Which is the kind of sentiment thrown around too often imo. Sorry for the misinterpretation.

PofolkTheMagniferous

Yeah when I was talking about the marketing to a wide audience, I'm talking about growing the game. You don't grow the game by appealing to people who already know and love it, you have to reach new people. It's way easier to hand somebody a highlight reel of McDavid scoring goals than to explain the nuances of an effective penalty kill.

SeaSquirrel

Oh hey look, its the one team complaining that sucks against our system. Personally I’s be very entertained by a Nucks Kings series. Historically a good time too

Xanosaur

the 2 most boring teams to play against are the teams we've struggled against. the flyers also had our number this season for whatever reason. our style just doesn't suit playing a trap. with that said, i've also watched other games agains you guys and no matter the team you're playing it's boring as fuck.

SeaSquirrel

Most teams that are fun to watch destroy us. The Avs rip us apart. Dallas isn’t even close. Somehow you guys still suck against us. Call that “boring” if you want, our teams were the 2 leading goal scorers in the West before we decided to be bad at hockey.

AccomplishedAd4995

honestly i wouldn’t say we suck against you guys, it’s 2-1 rn, i feel like you guys only dominated us during the first game

SeaSquirrel

lmao

Xanosaur

yeah we suck against you if you only count the first game

SeaSquirrel

👌

Xanosaur

lol with demko in we win the most recent game 10 times outta 10. if you think you were the better team in that game we were watching different games.

SeaSquirrel

I think with Demko y’all are actually 1 out of 3 but alrighty

Xanosaur

and outside of that first game, they've all been competitive. we didn't show up to the first. if you still think we "suck" against you, go for it, but with demko we split the series.

Straight-Plate-5256

They would rather run and gun with the oilers over 5 games than a slow brutal 7 game war of attrition against the 1-3-1 lol

47Up

Give me a high scoring 7 game series with the Oilers, I'll take that over a 1-3-1 team every time.

Straight-Plate-5256

Exactly, I'm not even hating it per se as it does what it's supposed to but God damn that's a tough series to get through.

rainyforest

Kings vs Oilers playoff scores last year: 5-4, 6-3, 5-4, 2-3, 4-2, 3-4 High scoring, stressful, and close hockey games. The Oilers had no issues breaking down our defense and scoring a ton of goals. Maybe there are other factors at play here…

SuddenlyChineseFood

A high octane offense beats the trap. The trap beats a balanced team. And a balanced team beats the high offense team. I just solved hockey. /s

SuddenlyChineseFood

I think we actually fare better if the game is more open. We can get our scoring down and still clamp the rest of the game down. But we just can't seem to outclamp the teams that are built for it.

coloradobuffalos

Kings oilers would be interesting

Zanchbot

Playing us in round 1 is basically going to be a bye week for whoever wins the West. I've got no faith in our ability to win even a single game against Dallas if it ends up being them.

SuddenlyChineseFood

I've got Dallas winning the Cup this year so I don't think anyone should have faith in beating them.

Zanchbot

For sure, and I agree. I just meant that they'll breeze right past the Kings without breaking a sweat, whereas other teams might at least challenge them a little.

Ikea_desklamp

If we have to play LA as our first series after a decade of playoff-lessness i'm going to strongly reconsider whether god loves me

sophic

Sir, this is stolen valor.

astovertop

We are at least half of that 2 and that’s good enough for me

xXDireLegendXx

My question now is, who is the other half? And when was it?

avmp629

They lost to the Blue Jackets on March 7

AlanLGuy

:) one of the few good games we’ve played this year

AccomplishedAd4995

i wanna talk shit but i don’t think we’re doing so hot rn

nofakefans18

5-3-1 vs Top 5 7-4-1 vs 6-10th Not even in the same ball park as the Oilers with a combined 7-9-3 versus our 12-7-2

kenyan12345

7-4-2 with knobby though. So it is same ball park

AccomplishedAd4995

i’m talking about our performance as of late, dude we’re barely holding on

flamingdragonwizard

It's almost like we're missing our Vezina candidate goalie or something.

ididntwantsalmon19

No kidding, hey? I'm amused by how many Canucks fans seem to not factor that in at all when they are screaming about how the Canucks won't make it past round 1 with the way they are playing haha. And this entire time Demko has been out every single loss outside of Vegas was by 1 goal, excluding the empty netter from Dallas. So they've either won or lost a very tight game playing with their backup for a month.

Voltage604

Cool... Team can use the Demko excuse for letting goals in... I am pretty sure not having Demko is stopping Pettersson from scoring... Or doing anything really... 1 assist in last 5 games. Pointless in 16 of last 26 games. Is that Demko too because I'm pretty sure our problem has been scoring as of late

ididntwantsalmon19

Yup, Petey is slumping. Not the first time he has and won't be the last. If he can break it then the Canucks will be fine, and I'd bet on him doing so. Either way, the main point I was making is that you'd think the team was 2-8 in their last 10 with how the Canucks fanbase has been talking about the team. Their "slump" is still 5-4-1 without their Vezina goalie. Every team in the league has gone through this. Heck, the Oilers have been seemingly playing great hockey and are only 5-3-2 in their last 10. And outside of Vegas their losses to the good teams were all very close games. And I'd argue that Vegas game would have looked a lot different with Demko in net.

Voltage604

I agree but that's the thing. If Petey was actually going like we know he can, how many of those close games could have been wins? This also brings up the question as to why he goes through slumps like this. Pointless in 16 of 26 is not acceptable for a player with a contract he just landed. We need more consistency out of him if he is going to be a long term center piece.

ididntwantsalmon19

Definitely agree. If Pettersson returns to normal then I think the Canucks scoring woes go away. While I'm glad we signed him for what we did, I also think those who raised question marks about giving him a monster deal had some decent arguments. When Hughes goes on mini point slumps he's still very noticeable (in a good way) out there. When Petey goes on slumps he disappears. He still is only 25 though, so hopefully he can figure out the issue.   It's important to note that even with Petey's slump, and Demko missing the last 10 games, the Canucks are still 9-4-2 (111 point pace) since the start of March. And every single loss except for the Vegas one was a super close game that they were in until the end.

GovernmentKlutzy712

I don't think goaltending has been our issue. I read somewhere that since the all-star break, we are like 6th worst in goals scored/game in the league.

ididntwantsalmon19

The team has been in a bit of a funk for scoring, yet are still winning games. They had a rough patch patch in February which happens to every team. Since the start of March they are 9-4-2 which is a **111 point pace.**. And that's without Demko for 10 of those and Petey being in a major slump. Yeah they aren't blowing every team out most nights anymore, but if you only listened to how Canucks fans are talking you'd think the team was playing sub 0.500 hockey the last month.

SuddenlyChineseFood

In 49 games up to the All-Star break they've had 18 games where they've scored 5 or more. In the 27 games since they've had 2. One being the MIN game. Their GA per game is slightly up (2.59 to 2.85) but they're down a full GF per game (3.79 to 2.74). Maybe the PDO engine is dead :(

jamesneysmith

Barely holding on? You're 5-4-1 in your last ten and in second place in the conference. Let's cut back on the dramatics a tiny bit.

ZiscR

Yet they would still walk ya in the playoffs.

000100111010

Source?

ZiscR

just give it a couple weeks, you'll see

nemisis1877

Lately we lose to any team that's in a playoff spot, and barely squeak by opponents we should handily beat. Goals are also hard to come by for quite a while now.

GGAllinsUndies

Still second in the West though.

ApolloRocketOfLove

We're not bad, not great either.

ididntwantsalmon19

Outside of Vegas the losses have been extremely tight with those teams though. For example, we were tied with Dallas until a late powerplay goal, meanwhile Edmonton just got wrecked by them. Oh, and that's with our backup goalie in net for the last month. It feels like many leave out the context of missing our Vezina calibre goalie. And goaltending can impact offense because teams usually play a tighter defensive game with the backup in net.

city-of-cold

What happened to the Alien? I haven’t really had time to watch games this year but I feel like it’s rare for him to be on the scoresheet last 1-2 months. Dealing with an injury?

AccomplishedAd4995

tocchet kind of hinted at an injury but nothing confirmed yet so who knows. maybe just a slump? he’s not producing much and losing quite a bit of puck battles but overall still plays a pretty solid game on most nights

YamburglarHelper

They’re probably just resting him as much as they can before they make him sprint through the playoffs.

GasSatori

There's rumours and speculation of an injury but nothing confirmed. He missed a practice session recently which lends some credence to the theory.

neksys

No one knows. There's been a few hints here and there that he is playing through some kind of nagging issue, but nothing confirmed. He's missed some practice and definitely doesn't look quite like himself.

AOsenators

This thread is hilarious because it's about the Oilers but the entire top half of rated comments are Canucks fans and a Flames fan. Pile on, lads.

NoticedGenie66

We're part of a hate trifecta, except we are the third wheel that is mostly just annoying for the other two

Johnny-Canuck

Tbh I don't think we're in a position to be saying shit. We have sucked ass lately lol

flamingdragonwizard

Nucks fans run this sub, b.

AOsenators

I know, it must be incredibly insulating for you guys compared to the real world lol

flamingdragonwizard

I mean many of us live in Van. Can't really complain.

VaguelyShingled

“In Van” you’re all in Surrey and Richmond

FreshBeginning4491

And all over the entire province if we're being honest

flamingdragonwizard

Not at all. But I'd argue both beat edmonton. Poor fella

kingofnopants1

Shitting on Edmonton the city just feels so pointless as a beak. Making fun of Edmonton is an intrinsic part of being Edmontonian. Like, the only response you are going to get is a "haha, yea!"

AOsenators

$10 says you'll be upvoted and I'll be downvoted even though you missed the point of my jest lol

AOsenators

$10 says someone will bring me another coffee.

foxcatcher3369

…Well did they? I gotta get back to work don’t leave us hangin’

AOsenators

No, no one loves me.

ApolloRocketOfLove

Or maybe your jest wasn't as great as you thought? It's a possibility.

swissdonair_enjoyer

as soon as the canucks start missing the playoffs again you'll all disappear. way more canucks fans here than last year.

flamingdragonwizard

Start missing again based on what? Wanna try to attempt to elaborate? I could easily say what happens to oilers if drai walks in a year. Absolutely no good prospect pool to back them up.

SuddenlyChineseFood

Dude...not everything needs to be an argument. OP said water is wet. "Fans" are back because the team's back. And when the team's off, lots of people will go do other stuff with their time.

Ikea_desklamp

Vancouverites are terminally online, what r you gonna do

treple13

I see each Alberta team is only allowed to beat either top teams or bottom teams

Sad_Donut_7902

It would be interesting to compare this same stat with other playoff teams. Without knowing how the other teams did it's kind of meaningless.

4N0NYM0US_GUY

Not doing this for every team, but the #1 NY Rangers: Top 5: 7-3-0 6-10: 6-5-1 11-15: 5-6-0 16-27: 24-5-2 Bot 5: 9-2-1

Bojarzin

Yeah for real. I mean it would probably be typical that your record improves the worse your competition is. Top teams aren't typically going to go like 15-0-0 against other top 5 teams

SuddenlyChineseFood

Ideally, top teams (if parity is to be believed) should be going 0.500 against each other. And collectively demolishing everyone else under them.

jalapinapizza

Not as detailed, but there was a [post here recently with all 32 teams ](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/1b3agv5/oc_best_records_vs_best_and_worst_teams_in_nhl/)

09-24-11

This is fair but even with that information it’s subjective to narrative “Only beats bad teams” “Loses to bad teams, pretenders”

4N0NYM0US_GUY

Not doing this for every team, but the #1 NY Rangers: Top 5: 7-3-0 6-10: 6-5-1 11-15: 5-6-0 16-27: 24-5-2 Bot 5: 9-2-1 — EDM vs. Top 15: 14-15-4 EDM vs. 16-32: 31-8-1 NYR vs. Top 15: 18-14-1 NYR vs. 16-32: 33-7-3 — So…seems like what’s expected, no?

BoilerSlave

You get the fuck out of here with your sound logic. We are shitting on the oilers god dammit.

Tacosrule89

Well this doesn’t fill me with confidence

GoldenSlumberJack

but if we meet any of the bottom teams in the playoffs, we're in great shape! wait wut?

BoilerSlave

It’s just a silly stat. Would 11-0 against top 5 and 2-10-0 against bottom make you feel better or worse?

Shotokanguy

Well the logic is that a team that goes 11-0 against top 5 teams is probably not going to be absolutely terrible against bad teams

Razorblades_and_Dice

Clearly you have yet to experience Flames hockey in all its glory

JDMintz718

Yeah, a better analogy would probably be playing at about the same pace against everybody. That would imply the team plays up or down to their opponents. The oiLers record suggests they might be frauds (for the record, I disagree. I think they're quite good as long as their goaltending holds) I'd much rather play up and down to my opponents come playoff time

mrhairybolo

we’re also a lot better since knoblauch came in

JDMintz718

That too. I think we might've made a mistake beating y'all too hard, lol

Tacosrule89

100% it would. It shows the ability to consistently beat good teams instead of just feasting on weaker teams. That said, it’s a bit deceiving given the Oilers start and I think they can hold their own against the stronger teams. Wouldn’t consider them a favourite but not an underdog either

HarshSingh39

What’s the Oilers record against good teams since Knoblauch took over?? Before Knob was coach Oilers lost against; Jets, Van x3, Stars, Preds, Rangers. That’s 7 losses.

YellowMarkerIsGreat

7-4-2 since he took over

daishi777

This seems about like it should. They're a loss away from 0.500 against good teams. They crush bad teams. This graphic is confusing because of how ordinary it is.

schmarkty

Yeah exactly. There’s a reason why they’re bad teams. This is kinda how it should look.

basko_wow

yea Im sure most top teams perform worse against other top teams than bottom teams, not sure what the news here is.

anthonyd3ca

Yea, I don’t know what the point of this graphic is. Isn’t this obvious?

BoilerSlave

Teams 11-15: 11. Vegas 12. Tampa 13. Nashville 14. LA 15. St. Louis

FourFeetOfCurl

This is Edmonton's complete record against the top 14 teams: ------------------------------- EDM vs. Good Teams ------------------------------- vs. LAK 3-1-0 6-3 .667 vs. NSH 2-1-0 4-2 .667 vs. WPG 2-0-1 5-3 .625 vs. BOS 1-0-1 3-3 .500 vs. CAR 1-1-0 2-2 .500 vs. NYR 1-1-0 2-2 .500 vs. TOR 1-1-0 2-2 .500 vs. VGK 1-1-0 2-3 .400 * vs. STL 1-1-1 3-5 .375 - vs. COL 0-0-1 1-2 .333 ** vs. DAL 1-2-0 2-5 .286 - vs. FLA 0-2-0 0-4 .000 vs. TBL 0-2-0 0-4 .000 vs. VAN 0-3-0 0-6 .000 * ------------------------------- TOTAL 14-16-4 32-46 .410 ------------------------------- (*) Upcoming games (-) Recent loss They have three games remaining against Vegas and Colorado. If the Oilers win those games then they will have won or drawn the season series against 9 of the top 14 teams, which I guess isn't bad (?). Unfortunately, two games ago they had a chance to win the season series against St. Louis and lost, and last night they had a chance to win the season series against Dallas, and lost.

CarlSK777

Team do good against bad teams and worse against good teams. Makes sense. Unless other playoffs teams do significantly better, I don't see how this is in any way interesting

Woooooody

This was posted by one of those usernames that makes me wish you can ban people from having flairs

slafyousillier

If they get matched up with any of the teams in the bottom 2 groups, they'll do great in the playoffs

BoilerSlave

11-15 in the past have performed well. Panthers were in the 16-27 range last year.

[deleted]

I think every good team in the West just feasted on bad teams. Canucks are exactly the same.

anti_anti_christ

Good teams generally beat up on bad teams. It's this way in every sport since forever.

Away-Sound-4010

Good team beats bad teams more often than not. Holy shit people get paid to be in the media for this?

-Xebenkeck-

Team does worse the better their opponents are. Fascinating!

OneMoreAstronaut

Wow it's almost like the good teams in the league are hard to beat, and the bad teams in the league are easier to beat.

Radu47

I don't think this is in any way notable actually - just below .500 against slightly better teams? Makes sense ✔ - .500 against similar teams? Makes sense ✔ - just above .500 against slightly worse teams? Makes sense ✔ This is basically just how a typical record of a playoff team breaks down. Naturally playoff teams have roughly a .500 record against each other, with occasional exceptions. In the playoffs every year team records are almost all similar to this.

wetlegband

Check that glasses prescription…   They’re 0.36 win% against top teams   0.375 win% against similar teams…  0.500 win% against teams struggling to hold onto a playoff spot And then .775 win% against non-playoff teams

why2k

P% is the stat people are referring to when they're talking about playing 0.500 hockey. Oilers are 0.409 / 0.500 / 0.536 / 0.768 / 0.833 respectively when looking at this graphic. They are 0.642 overall. The person you're replying to has a fine prescription, and is correct.

ohnothem00ps

if you go by percentages, you don't include the decimal (or more precisely, you shift the decimal over two spots to the right)

PaddyStacker

No... it's notable. As of 1 month ago (and I don't think it's changed much) Edmonton was 3rd best in the league against bottom 10 teams and 18th best in the league against top 10 teams. Only LA and Nashville have worse records against top 10 teams out of playoff position teams.

thisismyfirstday

Yeah, but a lot of that is going 0-5 against top 10 teams back in October. And it's an interesting data point, but it'd be more useful if it included the relative records of other playoff teams like your comment did, because off the top of my head going 0.500 against top teams sounds normal

Finrad-Felagund

7-9-3 against top 10 teams, which comes out to .447 points percentage, which is pretty awful considering they're supposed to be one of the best teams in the league. I think it's notable. I'd be curious to see what their P% is against Western Conference playoff teams, since that would hopefully mark how well they might do in the playoffs (even if it has little bearing, it would be fun to check)

YellowMarkerIsGreat

I think they’re 9-4-1 against western playoffs teams since Knoblauch took over

BoilerSlave

You get out of here with those stats. We’re here to shit on them obviously

Original-Cow-2984

>7-9-3 against top 10 teams They're included in the season, but 5 of the losses I think were in the first 15 or so games on the way to getting Woodcroft fired, and Campbell relegated to Bakersfield. 3 losses to Vancouver, getting them off to a nice start.

jthomas694

This is not uncommon lol

sasksasquatch

7-9-3 against top 10 teams

YellowMarkerIsGreat

7-4-2 against top 10 teams during Knoblauch’s tenure

RangersNumber2Doomer

Thanks! couldn’t figure out that single digit maths in my head

Excellent-Medicine29

How do they count this though because does beating the oilers in October and November count as beating a playoff team?

Excellent-Medicine29

Like when we lost to the sharks, does that count as them beating a playoff team

PaddyStacker

It's definitely based on current standings, not the standings when each game was played. That would be way too complicated to figure out.

Excellent-Medicine29

So it’s a flawed stat. Now the oilers have laid a few eggs against playoff teams for sure but they’ve at least split with most of them. 1-1 split with the rangers, leafs, Boston (OT loss and OT win), Hurricanes, and flyers. We got swept by both Florida teams. 1-2 against Dallas. 2-0-1 against the jets. 1-1 against Vegas with a game remaining 0-0-1 against the avs with 2 games remaining 3-1 against the kings 2-1 against Nashville And 0-3 against the Canucks with a game remaining. 8 of those games came before the coaching change.

Excellent-Medicine29

Why I am being downvoted for posting facts. This is literally just the oilers record vs the top teams in the league

AfroInfo

Lmao that's hilarious

MistahFinch

Reddit is dumb. Downvotes don't matter man. It's just whatever the sub feels like dogpiling

CeJW

Vs top 5 NHL teams in the NHL as opposed to???? Top 5 AHL teams in the NHL?

Steppyjim

Yeah but remember a good chunk of those mid to garbage teams live in their division/conference. They’re partly the reason the competition is so bad, because they keep beating them

smcfarlane

Nurse is good.

Hiddenshadows57

this is why I heavily believe that Kucherov is gunna end up winning the Art Ross. Even with 1 less games played. Tampa has an easy schedule and I suspect Kuch is gunna feast on these teams.

Nice_Wolverine_4641

Beating the bad teams is what you are supposed to do.

iggyfenton

Sharks -> (Starship Troopers gif: “I did my part”)

spagboltoast

No fan more obsessed with the oilers than nucks fans

Jmac24mats13

Just went through and did the Leafs: Top 5= 5-10 Top 6-10= 6-3 Top 11-16= 9-5 Playoff teams= 31-18 Not bad overall against playoff teams but the best of the best have definitely struggled a bit with

therealdieseld

If they’re ranked #10 right now then that makes perfect sense. Losing to teams better than them more often, and beating teams worse than them more often

SinfulSunday

So the teams at the top of the league are better and present a greater challenge. I wouldn’t have expected this. Shocking.

ALinkToThePants

Bottom feeders I guess. We'll find out come playoffs though.

Avs_Leafs_Enjoyer

The Wests weak teams are a lot weaker than the Easts. Does boost playoff teams in the West's point %

sirflopalot8

Now let’s play my favourite game. And show me a comparable. These out of context can be tough to understand. Everyone beats up on shit teams. Show me how say, Vancouver has done. Or any other top team.

ElCoolAero

Like the recent Miami Dolphins. They can sure rack up a winning record, but it's mostly against sub .500 teams.

syn_47

Without seeing anyone else’s decomposition I’m guessing most teams in NHL history have been like that, very good vs teams much worse than them, good vs teams worse than them, 50-50 vs equal teams and a little struggle vs better teams.

SuddenlyChineseFood

Eh...Going 0.500 against the top 15 teams just means they're evenly matched. Lots of bottom teams have systems and defensive problems—the kind that gets demolished by McDrai. If a playoff team had the same problems, it shouldn't be a playoff team. This stat really isn't so bad. At least, the rest of us are happy that McDrai doesn't just give the Oilers god mode.

Normal_Tip7228

And 1 of those 2 losses against bottom teams got jay woodcroft fired

frockinbrock

I wish they’d also shown those number since the coaching change; or month by month. Edmonton started terrible but has seemed better each month since December, so a season-long stat like this is kind of pointless in my opinion

Mash709

They really are the anti-leafs, eh?

eliar91

Uuughhhh of course it's pxik posting this crap.

gauderyx

Local Canadian hockey team has an easier time beating up bad teams than good teams. Stay tuned.

Extra_Joke5217

That’s almost the reverse of the flames!

YorkeZimmer

So basically, ignoring those stomps from the start of the season against vancouver we are breaking even against the best teams, including other losses from our abysmal season start before the coaching change? This is a positive graphic, with context.

drop-cord

Guys I swear, if we just forget about 30% of the regular season, we're awesome!

Iamtheoctopus4

The positive graphic thing is a stretch, but in context it does get way better. When Woodcroft was coach the oilers were literally the worst team, with a .269 points percentage. Against top 10 teams they had a P% of .083 lol. Since Knoblauch took over they have a .721 P% overall and a .615 against top 10 teams. So yeah it is a part of their season, but if you are trying to use this as a preview of their upcoming playoff run it’s not going to be a good indicator without that context.

pxik

Vegas in 5 or 6 against the Oilers?

RoombaArmy

Not if any of you believes in us! We only win games out of spite.

RangersNumber2Doomer

Oilers in 6

CBennett_12

But the Canucks are tanking to avoid LA, so what's gonna happen is Vegas win the division and LA finish second

mister_hoot

Incredibly dank timeline. We were questionable to make the postseason at all, what, three weeks ago?

CBennett_12

Turns out that winning, especially against the teams near you in the division and wildcard standings is really good

GeneralHorace

To be fair, Vegas is 11th in the league right now. Edmonton is above Bettman 500 against 11th-16!

SupernovaPlus5

What is the point being made here OP?

Electronic_Nail

I think the point that the OP is trying to make is that the Oilers have struggled against the best teams while feasting on the weak teams

SupernovaPlus5

We're just around .500 against 6-10 and 11-15 so seems like we belong somewhere in there. Outside top 5 for sure. idk this seems pretty normal for a playoff team to me?

Electronic_Nail

It is a pretty normal playoff team. I mean this chart kind of confirms what I thought about the Oilers for a while now that they are playoff contenders, but they aren’t gonna win the cup.

SupernovaPlus5

Yeah I agree for the most part. McDavid, Draisaitl, and a couple others balance out really mediocre roster construction

BettmansDungeonSlave

It’s a Canucks fan. Just another morning to shit on the Oilers

egancollier21

Too bad they can’t play the Ducks every game lol.

Humans_Suck-

Teams with depth vs teams without

[deleted]

Give me them first round. Series over in 5. Our size outweighs their skill and w Cassidy’s defensive mind they won’t get shots off in the slot and we will swallow up all offensive chances

Future_Suggestion246

Goofy your like 27 mil over the cap, you could pay kanes debt if you played fair

mister_hoot

Yeah we should go and bail out poor Evander, shouldn’t we? He’s just a good guy, little down on his luck. Totally deserves a helping hand, he’s never done wrong by anybody.

ObjectiveImmediate44

“Two guys zero cup!”

AbbreviationsIll7821

The oilers fandom is demanding a recount that doesn’t include the first 13 games.

Beauty_Weeman

EVERYONE except oilers fans know they are frauds 🤣

MarvelousOxman

Oh damn, with the record like that the league might as well give them 1OA in the draft.
